ありがとうございまし (Arigato-gozaimas: Thank You)
Beauty is not separate from the everyday life It is a part of life itself. In every aspect of it-- Sometimes in the middle of the street Sometimes hidden in the lonely, dark corners You will find it You just need to keep your heart open
March 19, 2018 Cambridge, MA
It is 6:34am here in Cambridge. I am lying in bed in my apartment. It is still dark outside, but the sun will be awake soon as well. In a few hours the 'real' life will resume. Rushing to classes, assignments, exams. Questions will be asked: So how was Japan? How do I answer your genuine question my friend? How do I? What do I tell you, what do I not?
Do I tell you about the humility and politeness of the Japanese culture and people? A way that manifests even in trains where every time the officer on the train leaves your compartment he will take a bow before exiting, regardless of whether anyone is watching or not. Or when your hosts wave goodbye to you from their front porches until your bus is out of sight. Do I tell you about the immense civic responsibility that each and every person in this country shows? Not a single piece of trash is left behind anywhere. You will hardly find any trash cans, because human lives were not meant to be devoted to picking other people's trash. If you have trash, put it in your pocket or bag and take it with you until a trash can is found. This respect for others is seen in the systematic single file queues before trains are boarded. No pushing or shoving. Your time is as important as mine. Do I tell you about the need to maintain harmony with space and people around you? A harmony with life itself. One is always conscious of their surroundings and in no way want to cause any sort of hassle to another person. If we're standing in the aisle blocking the exits of the train or the gathering of the large group in a station is causing inconvenience to other passengers, we are quickly asked to move to the side by the organizers. The natural rhythm of life cannot be disturbed. Perhaps if you're a student of development I should tell you about the single-minded focus that people here have. The attention to detail in the pursuit of excellence. The attention to detail from the way you have your tea to the building of a car company that is loved by millions around the world. If it is not this single-minded focus, how else could one possibly explain the ability of a country to rise up every time it has been pushed to the brink. Pushed to the brink with its opening up to the Western world in 1850s, pushed to the brink after the devastation of World War II, pushed to the brink after the lost decade of the 1990s following the burst of the economic bubble and pushed to the brink after the catastrophe of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. I do not know how to answer your question, what should I tell you? The beauty of the gardens and the cherry blossoms. The beauty in the corners of that Tokyo restaurant where we sat and had our first meal in Japan. The bonds that have been built with many of the others who were with us. I hope in my inadequate reply to your question: how was Japan--a part of my smile will convey to you the love I now feel for Japan. I hope you too will find time to visit this land and immerse yourself in it. I hope you too will find a chance to see Japan in all its trials and tribulations.
People often say that they have left a part of themselves in the country they were visiting. I see it the other way. I think I have taken a part of Japan with me and it will remain with me for all the years to come. Arigato-gozaimas.
