It's been a while since I've had time to make one of these but I really loved today's newest Star Trek: Discovery (and the whole season so far) so I made time tonight.

i’m thinking about my man captain pike basically every hour of the week right now on my chronological marathon, and am still stuck on “q&a” where the first thing number one says about him is that he’s “unsentimental.”

that might have more to do with her than him; i don’t know her very well yet. but i have been thinking about it, and about how he changed the discovery crew by being the steady, noble captain they lacked in season one, but also they changed him.

the discovery crew is the most emotionally honest and demonstrative crew we have ever met. they love each other so hard and show it even on duty, even on the bridge! they laugh and cheer and cry together. when a crew member died, they put the ship on autopilot, presumably so that every single member of the crew could attend her funeral.

(not to mention how a large number of them abandon everything and everyone else in their lives to travel to the future together!)

obviously the discovery crew went through hell together in a prolonged and concentrated way, without the respites of goofy holodeck episodes that episodic trek crews got. there’s a reason that this traumatized bunch would be that close to each other, but even voyager’s crew don’t cry on the bridge, you know?

(no wonder they will eventually save the galaxy with the power of feelings!)

pike respects that part of the ship’s culture and never tells them not to. he considers himself their temporary captain throughout. but there is no way that being part of this crew doesn’t fundamentally change him as a person and a captain, and i look forward to seeing how it will impact the way he captains the enterprise going forward.

also, i haven’t seen the strange new worlds cliffhanger yet except in gifs, but i will note that he freezes up on the discovery bridge at the end of “in memory serves” when he needs to let go of michael and spock’s transporter lock, and only gives the order after vina gets in his head and convinces him to.

a list of Trek things that I’d literally sell an organ to experience for the first time again:

-spock’s death scene and funeral in wrath of kahn

-the subsequent kirk-spock switcharoo that AOS trek pulled at the end of Into Darkness

-speaking of aos, when Spock Prime shows up in the ice cave in 2009 (no bc I literally SCREAMED like the sound that came out of me was insane)

-when Pike showed up in Discovery

-the sickbay scene where Kirk turned out to be alive in Amok Time (smiley spock🥰)

-the DS9 tribbles crossover episode

-every single time Spock swears in The Voyage Home

-when the enterprise rises out of the nebula behind Khan’s ship in WoK

-Chakotay begging Janeway not to do this to him and sobbing over her dead body in Coda (yeah I’m a masochist and???? what do you want from me)

-when Wesley showed up in S2 of Picard

Another drabble for the @100wednesday challenge!

This week, I'm diving into one of my all time favourites: the world of Star Trek.

He would spend the rest of his life working to live up to his sister’s advice.

Michael’s final words to Spock had been simple: “find the person who seems farthest from you and reach for them… let them guide you.” It was an easy promise to make. He’d learned so much from her, how could he deny this final request?

It took time. The crew of the Enterprise were varied and colourful. He did his best to connect with them, even when their behaviour defied logic. It was a frustrating endeavor.

Until the day he found someone who reached back.

Rebecca and Anson's chemistry are off the charts and I do hope that the SNW writers would see that already, Pike and Una already act ( even in discotrek ) as a work-husband and work-wife and parents of the "kids" of their group. And not to mention what the Talosians said ( yes I hate ToS someone but here we are ) that she has feelings for him

I agree with everything you said, anon. They're very lucky to have two actors who work so well together and deliver such great chemistry on screen.

I mean Captain Boy Scout was ready to break the wrist of that security bloke, who was just doing his job, for laying a hand on Una. I literarily gasped during that scene because it was such a "No more Mister Nice Guy when you touch my wife" moment. And they did hint at Una's feelings for Chris in the Short Trek with Spock, too, so I expect/hope it will be adressed further down the line. Otherwise it would be a massive waste. For me they're like O'Neill/Carter (from Stargate SG1 if you don't know them). Even if they don't end up together, which we know will happen from TOS unless they decide to go completely off the rails of canon, they are still soulmates!

The bit about Batel is very interesting and I definitely noticed a resemblance there as well, not just in the looks but also in the personality. If you go with some people's theory of Pike and La'an having been a thing in the alternative future timeline in A Quality of Mercy (I'm not a Pike/La'an shipper so I don't really like that theory) where La'an was like a Una substitute, this does affirm, without counting the woman from The Cage, that Pike seems to have a type and that type is Una!!!

The new Star Trek show and it's predecessor Discotrek really showed with the character of captain Pike how to write a character into a corner and is also prime example of why it should be is considered a divergent of the original timeline. The very existance of time crystals and their use aside, he never should have been shown his future and then forced to accept his fate especially because not two episodes later, that same notion is effectively discarded and changed for another character.
