Art Hacks for Physical Disabilities!!
I know art can be inaccessible to physically disabled people for a lot of reasons, and I think art should be accessible to everyone, so here’s a couple of the things I found to help for a few different issues you may face that stop you participating!
I have a link to all these items (UK) in my link tree!!
IMAGE DESCRIPTION
Slide one: illustration of a white woman with pink hair, wearing a pink outfit, sitting in a power wheelchair, looking at the viewer with thumbs up. Text Reese “hacks to make art more accessible”
Slide two: illustration of three different kinds, using three different types of pencil grips. One hand uses a circular grip. 100 is a large, rectangular grip. Another uses a grip that is ergonomic and fit into the hand. Main text reads “Paul, grip, strength and dexterity”. Subtext reads “there are loads of different types of pencil, grips or design for different disabilities and conditions. Increasing the width of the pencil can give more texture for a better grip using a pencil with a thicker with also reduces the amounts of pressure needed to hold a pencil you can make your own using items like pool noodles. KT tape an air dry clay. You can also put these groups on things like paint brushes.“
Slide three: illustration of a hand using a tool that looks like a wrist support with a paintbrush connected to it text next to it reads “this talk next a paintbrush to your hand in a way that means you don’t need to hold the paintbrush with your fingers and you will need to move your arm around“ on the bottom right hand corner is in photograph of a guided hand device. Text read “regarded hand as a tool designed to reduce the need for moving your hands and fingers and relies on the movement of your shoulder and upper arms and can be used with different materials like paintbrushes, pencils, pens and styluses.
Slide four: main header reads “when in bed“. Illustration of an iPad pillow with a iPad in it is next to text that reads “iPad pillows, put your tablet at an easier to access level when sitting or lying down“. In the bottom left hand corner is an illustration of a girl sitting in bed in her pyjamas with a pillow behind her and a bed table as she is drawing. On the left hand side is a photograph of a bed table with the text reading “bed tables are used to give you a flat tire up surface while in bed, and are often height adjustable”. In the bottom right hand side is a bedsit, a pillow with the text underneath, reading “ bedsitters of specially shaped pillows that you put behind you in bed to help you set up and give you a soft surface to lean back on”.
Slide five: maisie had a read out “at a desk left”. On the left hand side is a photograph of the document holder with the text “document holders put your paper at an angle to help prevent crane in your neck down”. On the right hand, middle side is an illustration of someone using a armrest and on the bottom left hand side is a photograph of the armrest. Text next to them reads “economic arm rests clip onto your table or desk and give you a surface you lean you’re forearms or elbows on. This can be used to steady your arm and reduce pain and fatigue while sitting at a desk”.
Slide six: maisie reads “foot and mouth painters” . on the right hand side is an photograph of swapping Augustine, an Indian woman with no arms, wearing a sari painting with her left foot. In the bottom left hand corner is an illustration of a woman with green hair painting using her mouth. Text reads “foot and mouth painting is a technique used by artists who do not have, or cannot use their arms so hold the paintbrush in their mouth or using their foot. Swapna Augustine is a foot painter who has painted with her feet and participated in multiple exhibitions of foot and mouth painters. Her art is stunning and I would definitely recommend checking some of help work out.“
Slide seven: main text reeds “art without brushes and pens”. On the left-hand side is a photograph of a spin art device. Text next to read it reads “spin out involves using bottles of ink and squirting them onto a spinning piece of paper to create spiral art. On the middle right hand side is a illustration of a laptop with coding art written on the screen. Text me next to it reads “coding art involves making programs that design and create art pieces digitally. This could be used in conjunction with an eye tracking software.“ On the bottom left hand side is a photograph of a child in a power wheelchair with paint on their wheels painting onto a large piece of paper. Next to this is text reading “wheelchair painting involves putting paint on your wheelchair wheels and moving around and large piece of paper. Sometimes you can connect a roller to create more marks.“
Slide eight: text reads “what do you do to make art accessible for you?”
End of ID.

Pages from a zine I made about disability. You can view the full zine on my itchio as well as download your own prinatble copy! Payment no longer optional as I’ve had some emergency expenses so the zine is currently £2.50, but this is a temporary thing.
ID: an illustration of the wounded man standing almost naked, impaled with multiple weapons. His body is coloured in red while the ground and weapons are black. His face looks tired.
The second image is black text with red ornate letters are the start of each paragraph that reads “You have to imagine that the wounded man is happy. That he has friends and family who love him, that his lovers taste his blood when they go down on him and don't flinch from how the swords slide in and out of his body during sex. You have to convince yourself that after he has broken down and sobbed from the pain and fear that he picks himself and his wounds up off the floor and continues onwards. You have to make yourself believe that it is better to bleed than to be dead. You have to believe that this life is worth living too.” ED.

I need to work on my colouring, imo. And backgrounds...
Anyways. Been having a flare up. Been thinking about rollators. Don't think I'll get one but had fun imagining how one could customise one. May follow up with other funky rollators.
Hope the image description in the alt text is ok, I am not very well and it makes my brain muddled.
(Edit: btw the fabric is real fabric. My blue badge holder is made from it!!)

If your activism isn't accessible & inclusive, who is it even for?
Here's a few things to keep in mind for accessible organizing: 1. If organizing an in-person event, communicate accessibility (including elevator or ramp availability) and public transit options. 2. When organizing online events or trainings, include options for closed captioning. It is also helpful to record sessions for those unable to join live (such as parents, students, and others with tight schedules!) 3. Avoid jargon and don't assume everybody knows certain phrases or acronyms (such as TERF).
Digital illustration of a disabled woman with a leg prosthetic and service dog. Text reads, ‘if your feminism isn’t accessible and inclusive, who is it even for.?”

She is distracted, looking at a yellow bird perched atop the antenna of a radio that is on the back of her wheelchair. /end ID]

[ID: An illustration of a woman sitting on a stool at an ice cream parlor. She is wearing a white blouse which hangs off of the shoulders and exposes the tops of her breasts. [ID: An illustration of a pin-up girl with a prosthetic left leg having a picnic. She is white with dark brown eyes and short, dark brown hair with a yellow ribbon on top. She has the same expression as the other pin-up girls with wide eyes and pursed, bright red lips. She is wearing a white blouse and yellow skirt with black belt, as well as thigh-high black pantyhose held up with white garters. She is holding a bottle with red liquid in it and has a straw sticking out of the top. Next to her is a picnic basket. In front of her are salt and pepper shakers and a hotdog on a blue plate. She rests on her knees on a blue and white, gingham-patterned picnic blanket. There are stains from where she has spilled the red drink on the blanket. She is holding her skirt up to reveal her thighs. /end ID]
Artists of the original pin ups are Gil Elvgren (Mobility scooter and cane), Harry Ekman (Prosthetic leg), and an unknown artist who I spent quite some time trying to find (Wheelchair). If you happen to know this last artist, let me know! Edits are by me.

🌕
A poem I wrote after fainting at work and seeing the reactions of those around me. Someone had made an insensitive joke and inspired me to write this. I put a lot of heartache into this so I hope others who ache too can enjoy. I personally think it's some of my best.

GoodTimesWithScar fanart!
You are not immune to the good times!
This is an extremely old piece, but I think it’s pretty good
[Image description: a drawing of character!goodtimeswithscar, wearing his season eight outfit. He’s wearing black boots, brown pants, a white button up shirt with a green sash, as well as a maroon (red) blazer. He has a yellow tie with a flower on the knot of it. He’s wearing a top hat the same color as his blazer, with a green stripe at the base above the rim. Flowers are stuck to it. He has scars on his face and a cannula in his nose. He is sitting in a mint green wheel chair, facing forward. One hand is on the wheel and the other on the brim of his hat. There is a speech bubble reading “Hello my fellow miners and crafters!”

cane users are valid-- we are pm full time cane users, and we're thinking about getting forearm crutches cause our cane isn't giving much support anymore. we have a rollator walker but its big and we're a little ashamed to use it cause things our mom says and how people will look at us. it's also big and we don't want to take up space. but our rollator walker helps a lot. we need to move out soon so we can be ourselves.. mom doesn't like the idea of us getting forearm crutches but we think theyll give us bettee support than our canes.. we are actively saving for a pair now.. - Pip

MCYT Physically Disabled Week!!
Tumblr media
Day 7: Free Day!
Thanks to the mods of @mcytphysicaldisabilityweek for hosting this event!
I chose free day because I gave Tommy what I have, May Thurner/Nutcracker syndrome! Which is kinda a weird one but here's a quick explanation:
May Thurner is a compression of your iliac vein (in your hip) and Nutcracker Syndrome is a compression of your left renal vein (kidney). While many people actually walk around with these conditions and are fine, a teeny tiny percentage of people, like me, suffer debilitating symptom that include swelling, tachycarida, abdominal, back (<- more common with Nutcracker Syndrome), chest, and leg pain, and severe intolerance of walking, standing, and even sitting upright (hence the near-flat wheelchair, which is actually modeled after the one I use.)
It's not a very fun set of conditions, and it's made worse by the fact that having it severe enough to be treated is extremely rare, and thus there aren't many places that treat it. So for this art chommy is just like me: bedridden and slowly loosing social skills.
If you would like to know more about May Thurner or Nutcracker syndrome, please ask!
