Creatures from Chinese mythology - Four Symbols addition (Lion Dance, Dijiang, Jingwei, Jian Birds, Peng) (3/3)
Lion Dance: One of the many myths associated with the Lion Dance is the tale of the Nian. In ancient times, a beast called the Nian would descend upon villages every year, devouring crops and people. The Lion Dance (along with firecrackers and the color red) was used to drive away the Nian, allowing the villagers to live in peace for another year.
Dijiang: Dijiang is a creature with no face and six legs. It lives in a state of perpetual confusion. Despite this, it is very fond of singing and dancing. Some sources describe it as a divine bird.
Jingwei: Jingwei was a girl that drowned at sea, and her spirit was reincarnated as a bird. She tirelessly throws sticks and stones into the sea to fill it up so that no one would have to suffer the same fate she did.
Jian Birds: The Jian is a mythical one-eyed, one-winged bird. In order to fly, a Jian needs to find a partner Jian. Paired Jian birds are known as Jianjian.
Peng: Peng, sometimes called Dapeng, are birds with wingspans thousands of miles wide. They can take the form of an equally enormous fish known as Kun.

Feifei became unexpectedly popular on my Instagram and both of us are pleasantly surprised! I’ve had Feifei for a year and a half now and this was the first time that he got to enjoy snow. For those who are not familiar, Feifei is a dijiang as seen in the movie “Shangchi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”. In the movie there is a dijiang named Morris. This is Feifei and he is my spoiled little mountain god of chaos.

Tess leans across the table, her chin resting on her hands in--yes, chinhands--as she beams over at the dijiang. Morris is bangin' out the tunes on this, the day of April 13th!
Bang out those tunes, Morris!
"Shangqi!" she gushes, "Come see what Morris is doing! Isn't he talented?"
ffs neil mo.rris will you stop banging out those damn tunes. it's the morning, for pete's sake.
@themckaytriarchy
A bleary-eyed, not-quite-yet-awake Shangqi stumbles out of his bedroom ( or rather, out of one of the McKay-McKenzie's numerous guestrooms ) and into the hall, awoken suddenly by a very strange, almost musical noise.
Jingle jangle. Bingle Bongle.
" . . . Mm ? Oh, g'morning." Shangqi mumbles, at the same time attempting to wipe away crud from the corner of one eye.
Giggle giggle.
The noise grows louder as he makes his way into the room, his eyes widening at the sight of a beaming Tess watching her slightly creepy absolutely adorable floating water child . . . who appears very much entertained by a toy keyboard-playing Morris.
Plink plonk. Bingle bongle.
"Yeah . . . I can see that."
Suddenly he's regretting buying that keyboard.

Koza is all set!
Made for Sodiumkoza on Twitter!
Sweet little Koza is made of minky, custom dyed minky, and some magnets to attach accessories. They sit at about 16 inches from the top of the head to the rump, 19 inches including the hair. The face and some of the markings on the body (and accessories) are machine embroidered and appliqued. There is a magnet located in the right side (their left) of the head/horn to attach the butterfly and flower accessories; the tennis ball horn covers can be pulled on or off of the horns (there are holes on part of the balls to slide on or off). The arms are stuffed loosely around the shoulder area to make them floppy and slightly poseable.
This little one is what I am VERY lovingly calling a frankenplush, because it is a mish-mash of multiple edited plush patterns! The head is a heavily edited/refines verison of Jakkob’s head, the body is part of my bagbean pattern, the horns are my goat AC pattern, cloven hooves are Lilibet’s, and the hands are Guilmon’s and the scalloped hoof fluff is part of Dijiang.
This pattern still took a little while to make honestly, haha! I attempted to go with a Kemono style, and honestly I think I need to do a little more studying on the style! I REALLY like how the general body shape, especially the soft muzzle transition, but it feels like something is still missing.
Aside from that, another thing mentioned on my first post about Koza, I was disappointed I couldn’t dye the base coat to be darker. :( I was excited to work on color matching until I finished patterning and realized this little one would be using close to 2/3rds of a yard. 1/4th of a yard of minky in my dye pot is pushing at and usually leads to getting some nasty blotchy colors. I was able to at least source a color similar to Ash that felt a tiiiiny bit cooler to the base color than Ash. I did spend quite a bit of time bouncing between Ash, and the color used. ^^; Oh! The lighter grey was also a struggle, since it seems like I had the same color (Charcoal) but both were entirely different colors- one was a tiny bit more red/warm and the other had a... yellowish? hue. Oddly both are also fabrics that have been in my stash for a while!
Anyways! Moving on! One of my favorite little features is the little scalloped floofs! I used a similar, if not the same as the concept used to make Dijiang’s scalloped detailing! I love the almost seamless transition and luckily only needed some minor anchoring stitching to keep them in place! ^u ^ The cloven hooves too! I like to believe that I improved the patterning from Lilibet, but I think it’s only because they’re more defined and slightly larger. :)
Cutting this write up a little short, but overall, Koza was super fun to work on! her expression is something I absolutely love, and don’t always have a chance to work on, smiles and sweet little eyes are always but, unique expressions always hold a special place in my heart (Also eyebrows!)! <3

Will Dylan visit Qilin Island (an interdimensional nexus between Earth and Ta-Lo (the heaven where the Chinese Panthaeon reside) the form of an ancient stone gateway (paifang) exists on Qilin Island, a remote island in the East China Sea hidden away by powerful magic.) & get to see the celestial dragons, phoenix-like fenghuang, the hoofed qilin beasts, the canine-like haetae, the vulpine-like jiuweihu, and the winged dijiang in his story?
Heaven has different islands/mountains/kingdoms but Dylan sticks to Mount Kunlun and the skysea since his protection only goes as fas as there.
Various creatures roam the mountain and he's fond of the local fauna (more so than the gods lol). Dylan will interact with all sorts of denizens of Heaven in his story!

Chai's and Grimm's Ancients, Azem and Thalia (and their transformations)! I wound up totally redesigning Thalia between the first and second illustrations haha.
More about Azem and Thalia under the cut (lots of facts about Chinese mythology incoming)!
Azem
Her true name is Amalthea, and her transformed form is based on the Qilin from Chinese mythology!
Azem's familiar is a collective of ten three-legged crows named Sanzuwu, though she was not their original creator. The Sanzuwu were originally created by the Words of Lahabrea, and she earned the Sanzuwu's trust and respect after she stopped them from burning the sky.
She entrusted the Sanzuwu with one of her eyes so that she could keep watch over her beloved home when her duties took her far from Amaurot.
Thalia
Thalia is really bad at magic! Though she works hard, she hasn't been able to devise her own spells, so she uses an ancient form of blue magic instead. Despite her shortcomings, somehow Azem chose her as her apprentice!
Thalia's transformed form is based on several beings from Chinese mythology (Hundun and Dijiang).
Hundun is a diety representing the primordial chaos. Hundun is often described as a faceless being. However, he died when some well-meaning gods tried to give him a face.
Dijiang is a creature that lives in perpetual confusion and loves to sing and dance, often depicted with no face, four wings, and six legs. Dijiang and Hundun are often conflated because of their shared lack of face.

“Whatever did happen to the Dijiang?”
“What Dijiang are you talking about? Specificity is important, especially in the context of the multiverse. I’m sure I have no idea what you’re talking about, my friend.” He knew exactly what Wong was talking about.

So the water fountain at the Seattle Center was a bit of a let down yesterday. I had brought Feifei along with me in addition to my moths because Feifei LOVES sprinklers and playing in the water (so long as it warm out) and after seeing pictures of the fountain in action he was all ready for it!! Only for it to be basically a benevolent waterfalls for an hour with water being blasted into the air about 41m (about 135 feet) every half hour for five minutes. Because the sound is a bit much for me I had to observe this damn thing for an hour of its cycle before determining when the safest time to do these pictures. Feifei got SOAKED!!! Happy little dijiang though. Elliot stayed on the blanket with the other moths though...

NAME: Astral Plane
ALSO KNOWN AS: Dream Plane, Liminal Space, Reality Pringles
DESCRIPTION: The astral plane is where all of the universe’s dimensions converge. With so many different entities occupying this space, it is an ever-shifting atmosphere. At any given moment, the way the area presents can differ based on who is occupying this space. Thoughts, emotions, dreams, and even aura can influence how the plane presents at any given moment. Even two people within the same vicinity can experience this realm differently. There are neutral zones within the astral plane, the primary one being the Morpheus Market where thoughts, dreams, and information can be sold to different merchants. This provides cover from some of the many spirits, entities, and astral beasts that call the astral plane home.
LEVELS: As the astral plane is a place where so many dimensions converge and where dreams find themselves at home, there are different realms that encompass the many aspects and spirits of the astral plane. Spectral beings can travel through these realms with relative ease while others, like individuals who can astral project, have to practice this skill diligently. The different realms of the astral plane are detailed below.
The Abstract: This part of the astral plane houses the neutral zone that contains Morpheus Market. Other astral and spectral beings call this space their home. Individuals who are especially in tune with their spirituality and dreams can project to this level of the astral plane. Those who have mastered this skill are often referred to as astral projectors or dream wanderers. This is the part of the astral realm that is most easily reached by astral projectors.
The Liminal: This level of the astral realm is where spirits and ghosts find themselves following their deaths. Particularly gifted mediums or exorcists are able to connect to this realm through a variety of rituals. This allows someone who is particularly gifted with their mediumship to connect with spirits on the other side. On the chance someone’s spirit is pulled from the Celestial, they will be unable to remember being in this realm. For this reason, very little is known about what this realm actually looks like, but it is believed spirits who occupy this space are at peace.
The Ether: The Ether: The most mysterious part of the astral realm is the Ether space. This is thought to be where all dimensions converge and where all energy is believed to originate, including the souls of the departed. It is also thought to be the source of magical energies on earth, channeled by spellcasters and magically charged objects or locations. Because energy from all dimensions flows in and out, and the very identity of the Ether is constantly in flux, the plane is speculated to be the most chaotic of the realms, with only fleeting rumors of anyone ever managing to directly access it in person. With difficulty, some spellcasters have managed to draw energy forth from the Ether, but what else lies within the realm is a great mystery. Some believe that The ether is where spellcasters draw their magic from.
ASTRAL BEINGS: There are a number of creatures that call the astral plane home. Below is a list of beings that can be found within the astral plane (excluding ghosts and spirits found in the liminal).
Al Basty
Caballi
Egregore
Djab
Fylgja
Hypnalis
Kuri
Lietuvēn

ASSOCIATED BEINGS: These creatures don’t live in the astral plane themselves, but they are associated with dreams, nightmares, or simply dimensions outside of the earthly plane.

morris has decided viejita is a friend, and stumbles awkwardly between jake’s legs to nuzzle the strange naked cat.
" ¿Qué vas a? ¿Qué estás haciendo? " Jake almost jumps back, but he doesn't want to disturb the cat, who was snoozing on his lap. It's too late, though, the dijiang has already made its way on his lap and bats a paw at Viejita, who jumps, claws out and digging into Jake's skin as she struggles to get away from Morris. " Qué demonios! " He quickly picks up the cat and moves her away from the creature. " Shangqi, please move that thing away from my cat. Else it's gonna get ugly. "
