Pet peeve of mine...

when a show establishes an incredible dynamic between two or more characters, then proceeds to give them no screentime together for multiple seasons. It really grinds my gears.

#most streaming shows and some network shows do this and i don't really get it #so i think it would be easier to tag the shows i like that don't fall into this pattern #abbott elementary #janine and gregory are in a weird place but it's obvious they'll be fine #the boys #if that show finds a pairing that works either romantically or platonically they usually won't let it fall by the wayside #hughie and starlight (especially hughie) annoyed me a bit in s3 but they had sweet moments too and their arc ended pretty nicely #dickinson #okay i'm cheating here because this show did keep emisue apart in ways that were sometimes frustrating #but they made it clear that they were always on each other's minds and gave them many big moments throughout the three seasons #it also didn't completely toss away other dynamics that i liked such as emily and lavinia and emily and death #being human #the goat honestly #they core four always had their own thing going on but they included each other as much as possible #they nailed it and i wish more people talked about that show #and yes this is blasphemy but i only mean the north american version #the uk version replaced its cast halfway through so i just can't count it unfortunately

I do think it’s funny that they made sue the “clingy” one on dickinson s3 when Emily was constantly like

Like, we’re talking about Emily “to take away our Sue leaves but a lower World” Dickinson.

There’s written proof that she could not handle Sue leaving her side in any way ever since they met 😂

#i do get that they used that as a plot point for character development and shit #but i don’t know #i mean I do love s3 but there are little things that I wish they would’ve expanded on if they had more time #like Emily’s perspective and relationship with sue’s children #she adored those kids #we have that one beautiful scene with the baby which I love #but one of the last conversations they had sue told Emily that she sort of forgot about her since she had a child #and then they just fixed everything by having sex #again a beautiful scene done with so much care and love and Taylor swift #but like a conversation would’ve been nice and also I would’ve liked to see them further down the line #a bunch of stuff happens to them down the road and one of my favorite parts of reading that was how sweet and caring they were until the end #like when Emily says that she loves her the same as when love first began it’s true until the end but more #like their connection just got deeper and deeper with time #overall they show made a great job at represting their relationship but the last arc was a bit rushed #and i would’ve liked seeing more #dickinson #emisue #emily dickinson #sue gilbert #open me carefully

I just finished Season 3 of Dickinson and wow, man. I love this show so much.

There's so little like it on TV today and it was exactly what I wanted - an interpretation, a reimagining, of a literary figure's life that saw her ride in Death's carriage and speak to Sylvia Plath and row a boat out to mermaids.

(I also love listening to Hailee Steinfeld read Emily Dickinson's poetry and would love to have an audiobook of her reading all of Emily's poetry.)

Harris Dickinson did a great new podcast interview with "Before the Lights" talking about a variety of topics including how he trained with them for "The Iron Claw" and still uses them now for his own health and fitness, then more about filming the movie and real life David Von Erich and wrestling, his own past and how he go into acting, his other film roles, and when he was a kid and getting made fun of for how he looked back then (felt so bad for him). Also revealed he was having chronic pain issues till he connected with the these guys and they were able to get him into better health while preparing for "The Iron Claw". Fascinating interview though still throws me he's British as for years I thought he was American thanks to him playing a lot of Americans and doing our accents so well (and you can hear it a bit here too).

some stuff i read and watched in december:

the buccanneers: never really hit the heights i wanted it to and most of the cast was not great! but kristine froseth is always watchable and kate winslet's daughter is darling, most importantly scotland doubling for cornwall was beaut. as ever god bless apple for spending money on nonsense

slow horses (s3): i don't know when river cartwright became my shit friend i'm unreasonably fond of but here we are! jack lowden v funny this season and i don't think it's just because i've decided he should be lymond in the billion dollar apple tv series that isn't happening and probably shouldn't bc who else is even blonde (harris dickinson?? i haven't seen the iron claw yet)

monarch: legacy of monsters: i started this and then due to my bad personality decided i had to watch all of the ~monsterverse for context, therefore godzilla december. strong threesome energy in the flashbacks, can't argue with wyatt and kurt russell playing the same character decades apart etc, love a disaster lesbian in crisis etc

~monsterverse interlude: most of these were silly, godzilla: king of the monsters was actively bad, godzilla vs. kong somehow my favourite due to the askars/rebecca hall (long beloved) combo plus all the neon. hollow earth let's go baby!

tokyo godfathers: loved this! love miracles in the city during the holiday season, love to listen to three different podcasts talking about the nuances of trans rep in subtitle translation etc

godzilla minus one: godzilla december! this one made me cryyy, the godzilla theme goes so unbelievably hard, cutest sweetest baby in the world, was incredibly happy to be emotionally manipulated by the endings etc

not going to get into all the christmas film rewatches but: coward's edit of the family stone (repeat the sounding joy!), crying at both little women 94 and little women 19 as per, moonstruck forever, bridget jones' diary colin firth the most sexually appealing colin firth 2 me etc

the wind rises: catching up with miyazaki before the boy and the heron and straight into my ghibli top 3, the love story stuff absolutely floored me

how to have sex: absolutely devastating god

the boy and the heron: very weird and beautiful and sad - saw the dub (robert pattinson you wonderful freak), seeing again with subs this week

jon krakauer, into thin air: a personal account of the everest disaster: i got about halfway through the first chapter and had to stop and ask my dad what the hell he was up to trekking to base camp on his own in the seventies. gripping, chilling, tragic

rose lerner, sailor's delight: rose lerner one of my favourite romance authors (true pretenses i love you forever etc), m/m age of sail romance set around the jewish high holidays with SO much longing and yearning my god

lizzie huxley-jones, make you mine this christmas: fun christmas romance - fake dating but she falls in love with the guy's sister! - that made me burst into tears like five pages in for reasons entirely unrelated to romance or christmas. a 2024 project for soph etc

barbra streisand, my name is barbra: did the audio version so even sped up i reckon i spent at least a full day and a half with barbra. as ever the parts about making things and artistic choices were the best parts, i respect her energy re: including every nice letter or compliment she ever received (my version of this would be reproducing nice ao3 comments etc). wild to me that she spent like 3 decades beefing with larry kramer trying to adapt the normal heart (with bradley cooper at one point lol) but i have to disagree with her impulse to tone down the gay sex to avoid alienating straight people!!

i am not here really but i was proud i managed to keep these little roundups going through the year so. happy new year friends

i am not okay with this (One of many cancelled netflix sapphic shows idk if uve seen alr)

skins (s3-4 + two eps of s7 have main lesbian characters. s5 has these girls who WERE ALMOST REALLY WERE KINDA GAY FOR EACH OTHER!!!!! the show is like Euphoria but British and 00s/10s and better.)

hannibal (the sapphics r much later and very much not the focus but theyre nice. hannibal is an amazing show regardless and Cannbalism and Homosexuality are some of our common interests anyway.)

everything now (Many sapphic main characters. protag literally is. its like heartbreak high kinda.)

sex education (i wont lie i didnt rlly care that much for the sapphics here But they existed and a lot of this show is good and fun anyway. also very much like heartbreak high imo)

ackley bridge (most of the show??? the protag??? is lesbian. The way the show works is confusing to me and i didnt finish it and i wayched it a while ago but. yeah)

genera+ion (the american heartbreak high that flopped. but really good show so sad it was cancelled)

arcane (main characters!!! caitlyn and vi!!! but if eel like uve seen this alr. ella purnell as jinx yk)

haunting of bly manor (the gay ppl here r so beloved to me.. they r quite the focus and the Main protag ks part of the relationship so)
