Great shot during the chase scene in Dutch film, FLODDER (1986). Directed by Dick Maas. Saw it in the theatre when I was 9. A memorable flick, for several reasons…

Saint [Sint] (2010)
Tumblr media
Well, at least the detail of Sinterklaas having an inverted cross on his bishop’s mitre is a fun costume design touch. It’s just too bad the movie has practically nothing else to offer. It wants to be a cheeky slasher-comedy but the most it manages is late-franchise Friday the 13th tier thrills. Characters are introduced for the express purpose of being killed, often in completely unsatisfying ways: at random the film jumps to a hospital with a children’s ward, and while the nurse is yoinked up out of frame to her demise, the action chickens out of leaning fully into gleefully transgressive pulp by not offing the kids onscreen in any sense. Sure, it’s revealed they all died in a fire at the end of the film, but if you’re gonna make a bad movie, at least indulge in poor taste a little. Poor taste here is exhibited solely in the film’s attitudes towards people who aren’t straight or white. As an outsider to Dutch Yuletide traditions, I can only look in and cringe at people still dressing up as Zwarte Piet even in 2010 (though I understand the more “PC” ‘Sooty Pete’ version is more en vogue currently; still seems like something Justin Trudeau might have done for fun at a party, but whatever). The ‘Black Petes’ of the motley crew of Sinterklaas’ Black Pearl ripoff are all burned and charred, so that gets hand-waved away, but the film still has barbs to lob elsewhere: a foppish couple get house-crashed by Jolly Old Saint Nick and his horse, and jokes about shoddy Chinese craftsmanship and suicide bombers are bandied about during anti-Sinterklaas zealot Goert's final moments (played by Dutch Brendan Gleeson, Bert Luppes). Am I clutching pearls? Sure, but this movie is so fucking boring that it’s almost impossible to even describe. Shitty gore, lame plot contrivances, and an all-around yawn fest. Sorry, but composing the score to the movie you also wrote and directed doesn’t make you John Carpenter. This isn’t The Fog and it sure as shit ain’t Halloween.

Five Men. Two Women. What EVILs Could Be Committed? "The Last Island" reviewed! (Cult Epics / Blu-ray)
“The Last Island” is Man’s Last Hope!  Now on Blu-ray! The horrible, mangled wreckage of a commercial plane crash on a deserted tropical island only leaves seven survives – five men and two women.  Burning what’s left of the remaining passengers, salvaging through baggage, and setting forth a plan of survival until their hopefully imminent rescue,  the survivors lean on each other and on hope…

Ciclo Zia Tibia 2023: Down

This comic is incredible because it gives insight into just how brilliant and manipulative Dick Grayson really is.
“The machination of the JLA, JSA, and the others are for the good of the others - for the good of the world” - this man knows exactly what the elites of the caped community are doing and secretly is supporting it. The best part is some of them know this, many of them don’t, but they all trust him like Hawkman said. Imagine the degree of power this man wields.
Dick Grayson’s role as the JLA heir isn’t just for show. The guy carefully plans and executes every move under the guise of a fool. He’s essentially a playmaker. The Playmaker.
He’s not the innocent, naive figure that wants to protect all villains given what he does to Talia. His choice of not killing villains plays into a larger game of balance.
Talia understands this as well. Part of the reason she hates Dick is because of him being a circus kid but also she reluctantly acknowledges him. Like poles repel and all that jazz.
They fit the dynamic of one of my favorite quotes of all time: “...they were both pretenders, liars - one serving the light, the other the dark.”
