Spy x Family Name Etymology

Talked about this before with friends, but with linguistics being spoken of more in the manga lately, I really want to talk about the Name Etymology of the characters and patterns that emerge when looking up the meanings of their names.

To start with, we have Loid, Yor, Donovand, and Melinda. The four main examples of parents that this family-based story gives us, all of which have names that reference colors.

Loid is a clear play on the name Lloyd, a name of Welsh origin that means "Grey."

The Spy x Family art book revealed that Yor is actually a nickname for Yolanda, a name of Spanish origin which means "Violet Flower" (resisting the temptation to make a joke about "Viole(n)t Flowers" here, please respect that) Obviously Violets are a color as well, but interestingly enough in terms of floriography Violets are some of my personal favorite flowers in regards to expressions of love, and can specifically represent "impulsive acts of love."

Donovan is an Irish name, meaning "Dark Brown"

and Melinda is a Greek name that has a few different meanings, and is complex as the character herself. It can mean Sweet as Honey, combining the words Meli (Honey) and Lind (Beautiful). Or it could come from the word Melanie with Lind, meaning "Black and Beautiful" which fits with the color theme established by the other names present. There is a bit of debate with this one though, which leaves it a little more ambiguous.

Moving away from the parents we have the children, starting with the two Desmond boys. Interestingly, Demetrius and Damian are both Greek in origin, just like Melinda's name, which makes me suspect a little that she chose the names without her husband's input. (Or more likely, that he didn't care enough to contribute it).

Demetrius translates to "Follower of Demeter," the Greek Goddess of the earth.

Meanwhile, Damian means "To tame or subdue," coming from the Greek word 'Damianos' which means to master, conquer, or overcome. The name is ALSO linked to Demeter, as Damia is one of the Goddess' epithets.

Then we have Anya/Ania, which means "Gracious and Merciful"

and now we have Sigmund and Barbara.

Barbara is a Greek name, meaning "Foreign or Strange."

And Sigmund is German, meaning "Victorious Protector"

i absolutely love how funny it is that damian fell for anya immediately after she punched him and put him in his place its hilarious and adorable and i love him so much

but thinking about it makes me sad BECAUSE

damian has never had anyone in his life who really genuinely cares about him passionately. when we see donovan interact with damian during the first meeting episode, donovan treats damian almost like an underling. a pawn, someone who’s a tool in the game he’s playing, but someone who he genuinely doesn’t know. hell, donovan even explicitly states that “children are like strangers” when damian is literally standing right there to hear it. and, when damian finally works up the courage to tell his father about his school life and his father says the most dismissive “keep that up” statement, damian’s face literally lights up and he’s so, so, so happy that he has his father’s approval over something he’s done (even though it’s barely an approval or anything)

and i was rewatching the clip where anya decks damian in the face because funny and it got me thinking. in school, damian has his friends who call him master -- probably because he wants to use his family name to feel as important as his dad and his brother are -- and his classmates all seem to “like” him. but their “like” is tied to damian’s father’s name and his family. so when anya is indifferent to him, he doesn’t get why, and so he pushes her, craving some kind of emotion from her. when she finally snaps and decks him in the face, she had a strong enough feeling towards him to want to deck him in the face. it wasn’t respect or fake, it was genuine frustration she felt for him. paired with her tear-filled apology, with a genuine-sounding plea that she didn’t mean to hurt him and that she wanted to be his friend, really moved damian because no one in his life had ever had that much emotion towards him, which likely is why following her apology, damian blushes and we see the beginning of his crush take form.

we don’t know damian’s relation to his mother yet, but judging by what she says to yor, she feels similarly to her husband. he’s had some contact with demetrius, who warned damian not to get his hopes up for their father to meet up with him. but he and demetrius don’t seem particularly close, even if they’re close-er than damian is with his parents.

damian craves attention for himself and his actions -- not his family's name. yeah he uses it to get attention (IE. his classmates) but it doesn’t stick with him the way that anya’s disinterest did. when anya notices things about him (even things that annoy her or that she makes fun of) she is noticing him, and that’s why damian fell so hard for anya and why his crush is so intense. he feels a huge spike of serotonin when anya acknowledges him because he’s damian, not because he’s damian desmond son of donovan desmond, which makes his heart flutter and him crave anya’s attention even if he’s a tsundere about it

...which also means that if he ever finds out about the mission (!!!) and how anya was only trying to get close to him so her dad could get to his dad, well, it’ll hurt him a lot.

tldr; fuck donovan desmond i hate him

SxF chapter 75 spoilers! ⚠️

I don't know what do you think, but this chapter was just 🤯! While i was reading two theories came up in my mind, but first i want to ask something.

What was Damian suprised about? Because her mother's apperiance or bc Yor said she ran past a car😂

Anya was brave in the bus, but everyone knows that she is just a child so it was expected that she will cry in that moment when Yor or Loid shows up. But the way that Yor was also crying was like she would be her true mother who would give her life for her child.

And the sweetest thing in the story is this DAMIANYA scene. I mean what is this if not cute?

Just look how cute it is. Finally Damian falf opened up towards Anya and confessed her how cool and incredible she was. And his reaction to Anya's answer... I can't find the right words to it.

But to my theories.

The first one is about Anya and her past. We don't know much about it, right? Well, let me show you something.

Just watch this two pictures of her. (The first pic is from chapter 75 and the secont one is from 62.3) Her eyes. She's completely zoned out. I think it's because she had flashbacks in these times. I mean, in the first pic she was waiting to her parents who weren't there yet. She could have a flachback about one of her adoptive family who abondoned her by leaving her at the orphanage. In the second pic, Loid was talking about how important friends are and this flashback could be about her past friends in the lab or in the orphanage.

My second theory is about who else if not Melinda.

At first, she was also a worried mother, who is just happy about his son well being, but when Damian tells her that not to tell Donovan ab his crying, she suddenly changed. She looked like if she was scared to death by going to public without her husband's permission. She even says to Damian that he can't speak about she was came to him. But why would she do that? Why is she scared? Maybe she knows something that could destroy Donovan's plan or she knows the whole plan. This would mean that she would became the most important person for the Operation Strix.

Loid and Yor, who are not even Anya's real parents, got furious and almost blew up an important interview that is crucial to an important mission after Swan hurts her feelings for his own satisfaction.

While Melinda and Donovan, Damian's real parents, he's from their own flesh and blood, didn't even care that someone punched their child

The fact that Loid and Yor had the same shocked reaction when they told them it was fine, like "someone just punched you child in the face, and you're saying it's fine? wdym it's fine?"

Well this is legitimately mindblowing for me. 2nd year of Secondary School puts Demetrius at 11 or 12 years old (probably closer to 12, given that it's the end of the school year) which is MUCH younger than I thought he was based on what little information we had before now. And it's hard to see for sure, but it looks like he's the only middle schooler who is an imperial scholar, since it doesn't look like any of his agemates have the cloak.
