Canonically trans pirate: Alister St. Marina
So, when we first started the Sea of Thieves comics, the game was still in alpha testing. I got the incredibly cool privilege of rolling up on the Golden Shores before other people even had access, because we were basically launching simultaneously. One of the really cool things about the set up was that we got to create our own crew from scratch and tell a story on the sea when it only had a few legends in it, so we were given free reign. I knew we had a handful of issues to tell the story and I hoped we'd get to come back to them, but nothing was certain.
Some of the characters, namely DeMarco and Lesedi Singh became regular characters in the game, which was something I had never even realized was a possibility. Then, of course, DeMarco's death as a big story in the game. It was the first big mystery. And Lesedi was part of it. We even got to hear Lesedi's voice (I was quietly VERY excited they actually cast a South Asian woman in the part).
That led to a new opportunity! Years after their initial adventures, we got to make a new mini-series called "Sea Dog's Search" which centers Lesedi on her quest to find her brother's lost soul. We wanted to change things up and show that it had been years of adventuring on the Sea of Thieves, so even though we hadn't written years of comics, we wanted to show that their lives had kept on going. Since Lesedi was our focus in the series, updating her look was important to me. In the first comic, she started out looking like this:
Then, in the game, she and her brother founded The Sea Dogs and got sharp matching outfits:
Obviously, she stay's looking fly, but it's worth noting that this was a matching outfit with her brother and much more his style than hers (DeMarco loves clothes and dressing sexy, Lesedi has always been a little more no nonsense). So now that she's out from under the shadow of both her brother and legendary father, we've done some updating to her look. First, she had to get rid of the old one and do a bit of fighting of her own:
Over the years, the variety of what you can wear in SoT has improved so we wanted to give Lesedi something that felt like it had a little bit of who she is and a little bit of her home.
But there was somebody else who hadn't really been in the game whose evolution was perhaps more important to me.
When we had done the first miniseries, I talked with the crew about the possibility of having a trans character in the books. They were excited, but one thing they really wanted in the comics was to make sure that things that characters did in the book were more or less achievable in the game and, at the time, there was no way in the build to change your character's look or gender once you started.
But now, there is! There is a potion that allows you to change the look of your character including their gender. Rare and co was very supporting of us then following through with an idea we had during the first fun that was now possible. I had originally written the character of Alessia St. Marina as a person who was not comfortable in her own skin and had used costumes and espionage as a way to cope with that. She was especially fond of going undercover pretending to be male.
At the end of the mini-series, Alessia ended up getting together with her partner in crime, but she was never able to come out as trans. But it has been a few years both in our world and in the game one, so allow be to introduce you to Alister St. Marina.
He's a smooth talkin swashbuckler who just happens to be married to one of the most dangerous cutthroat women in the world, whom our crew has to rescue from her most recent scrape.
So, thank you very much to Rare, Titan, and everybody else involved for letting us tell this wonderful story and bring the first canonical trans masc pirate character into the Sea of Thieves.

Downing a player will score you five silver – and if that player isn’t revived, you’ll add another five silver to your tally when they head to the Ferry of the Damned. Of course, combat’s another way to score, and with a shortened contest time comes the potential for very tight margins between winning and losing. If you’re going down, there’s a lot more to lose than time – which is precious enough in these new 15-minute contests! Sinking will deduct 1000 silver from your overall score, so make sure someone on your team is managing the patching and bailing. If you’ve cashed in a Sea Dog Chest (1000 silver), all your hard work will be undone if you let your ship go under later in the contest. Your second tip is, simply, try to avoid sinking. While scoring silver is important in The Arena, holding on to it is key to your success. There’s only one delivery point in The Arena now, so once you’ve got the chest, everyone else will know where you’re heading. There’s no more X Marks the Spot mechanism for finding the chest, so following the bright beacon to the booty is the easy bit – it’s getting your hands on it and selling it before it’s snatched that’s the challenge! Cash it in successfully and you’ll score 1000 silver. While bagging the chest first puts you on the front foot, remember that it also paints a target on your back. With a reduced contest time, you need to be scoring silver in any way you can – and each successfully landed cannonball awards 40 silver to your team. If other crews are racing you to the chest, that also gives you opportunities to score silver by landing shots on their ships. A popular tactic is to start the contest by racing towards the beacon, even if you’re not sure you’ll be there first that doesn’t necessarily matter, as stealing the chest back is perfectly possible should another crew swoop in before you. As soon as you progress from the Glorious Sea Dog Tavern into The Arena, get your anchor up and set sail. While we want pirates to ultimately discover their own recipes for success, with these changes in mind, we thought it’d be a good idea to offer some up some top tips for tackling the revitalised format!įirst tip: every moment counts, so use your time wisely. Matches are now only 15 minutes long, the arenas themselves are smaller, the silver gains for ship battling have been upped, and there’s now only one Sea Dog Chest available to nab at all times, indicated by an ever-present bright purple beacon.

With April’s Ships of Fortune update came a whole host of changes to format of The Arena, and while the basic principles have remained intact (the crew that finishes with the most silver wins), some of the tools and tactics for increasing your silver score have evolved. Spearheaded by Lesedi and DeMarco Singh, the Sea Dogs are the ones to impress with your silver-winning ways – and as you win matches and rise through the ranks, you’ll be rewarded with Sea Dogs Commendations and striking cosmetics. The next chapter of The Arena is here! Originally introduced with the great Anniversary Update of 2019, The Arena is Sea of Thieves’ purest PvP experience, pitting pirates against one another in – you guessed it – an arena for fast-paced, action-focused play.

NDP Leader Asks Trudeau to Consider Invoking Emergencies Act in Ontario
"In a letter sent on April 19, [Jagmeet] Singh asked Justin Trudeau to consider revisiting the declaration of a public welfare emergency under The Emergencies Act. ... The act, which has never been used, gives the federal government the power to override provincial laws to ensure 'safety and security' during national emergencies. Singh argued that declaring an emergency in Ontario would help ensure a 'more coordinated' delivery of vaccines to those who need them most, such as essential workers."
"'Canada is not yet receiving enough vaccines, and vaccines have been slow to arrive. In some places, this means that vaccines are not available to those in danger,' Singh wrote. 'The most glaring example of this is in the city of Toronto, where the wealthiest neighbourhoods have higher rates of vaccination than neighbourhoods where racialized and working-class people live – and which have higher levels of COVID-19 positivity.'"
"Declaring an emergency in Ontario would also allow workers to take paid sick days and time off to get a vaccine, both of which would help stop the spread of the virus. Singh clarified that he believes the act should only be invoked where it is needed and not Canada-wide. 'Many provinces have taken steps to contain the virus and distribute vaccines to priority populations,' Singh wrote. 'Ontario is a glaring exception.'"

📌 how did you find your hyperfixation? i’d first heard about it while it was in development and stuff but it wasn’t until my gamer friend 2 years ago was like “hey you should buy this game and play it with me it’s half off right now” that i actually played it. and WHILE i was playing it for that first year i was like “hmm this is a fun game but i dont think it’ll become a hyperfixation for me :]” but then i decided to look into the lore and now i cant stop.
✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?PIRATES COOL.. honestly tho !!! i think the biggest draw in is the living out the childhood fantasy of sailing around and doing crime with your friends on the high seas, but like. thats barely scratching the surface of this game. there’s like,,, so much passion put into it. the lore and worldbuilding are extensive and fascinating and well-written. the ART is so GOOD… THE CHARACTER DESIGN !!!!! IS FANTASTIC !!!!!!! and i mean there’s also the excitement of watching the plot unfold gradually in what is basically real time !!
🎶 if your hyperfixation has songs/an ost, what is your favorite song from it? THE WHOLE SOUNDTRACK IS SO GOOD. i genuinely cannot pick a favorite BUT… bosun bill will always hold a special place in my heart as the first shanty i learned the lyrics to.
