No spoilers today ...
I have de-picoulted my bookshelves and feel better for it. I picked up a couple of tomes by people I am used to consider deeply wrong-headed. Will read to see if they can convert me to the fourth wave/gender identity/silver ring thing.
Tumblr media
Good pickings from a sleepy book-share box, I thought.
I am expecting to enjoy the Shalit a lot more than the Frances-White (but will see). The concept of modesty interests me, although I am not expecting to agree with everything the author says. (I was in two minds whether to take it but then I read this para which I found interesting, and made me want to read a bit more:
... although our ideology can expunge words from our vocabulary, the feelings remain and still cry out for someone to make sense of them ...)
Read a piece in the New York Times about loneliness and isolation, which is a big interest in my workplace as I work with older people who are thought to be disproportionately affected by both.
Can't link as it is behind a paywall, but this is from a description of a survey methodology and I thought it was a good list of questions:
They asked respondents how many people they had in their social circle whom they could depend on to care for them if they fell ill; to lend them money; to talk to them if they had a problem or felt depressed; or to help them find a job.
(Studies Show: We Need to Understand the Difference Between Isolation and Loneliness by Kim Tingley)
That's all ...

Favorite Genre: Interracial, Granny, CFNM
The perfect adult film has to have Interracial [Black man + White woman] with the woman being older than the male actor like a Cougar [40+] a Mature [50+] and Granny [60+] preferably a Cheating Wife with a diamond wedding ring with a large silver or gold band, if blonde with wavy hair that reaches past the shoulders and piercing blue eyes or deep green eyes with DDD breast and nice round asses, The same goes with brunettes however they can have pixie haircuts. I prefer the older women to also have a double chin and a hunch back, a barely visible neck with wrinkles all over, thick wrists and fat fingers that can barely wrap around a fully erected cock. Both actors have to be well endowed and natural (males at least 8- 12+ inches long and 7+ inches in girth circumcised or uncircumcised doesn’t matter as long as he produces a lot of cum when it’s time to). If women do have implants then large teardrop ones from D cups to K cups. If it’s CFNM the woman must be fully clothed and dress in club wear or look a bit conservative. When it comes to Granny/Gilf porn, I prefer to watch dirty talking larger women BBW/SSBBW with huge breast, arms, belly, legs and ass taking on one or more younger men (gangbangs, bukkake, jousting, blowbangs or double barrel). Favorite Porn stars of all time are Daphne Rosen, Deauxma, Desiree Devine and Sensual Jane.

On 14th March 1952 we saw the first TV programme to be broadcast in Scotland
The broadcast showed the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society performing the Duke of Edinburgh Reel.
The BBC’s new television studios, grandly called Broadcasting House, were located at 5 Queen Street. The invitation had specified “Dress -- Highland or Dinner Jacket”.
Guests included Scotland’s aristocratic and cultural elite (Highland attire), plus a handful of London-based BBC executives (Dinner Jackets) who had ventured to their new outpost in what they saw as the frozen North.
In the main studio, the VIP audience was in the focus of  live television cameras and the atmosphere was tense. The pictures on the monitor screens were small and horizontally lined, and , of course, in black and white.
In his speech opening the transmitter, the Secretary of State for Scotland, James Stuart, found the time to put in a good word for John Logie Baird. This was followed by a Prayer of Dedication by the Very Rev Charles L. Warr, Dean of the Thistle and Chapel Royal.
After a Vote of Thanks by James Miller, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the stage was taken over by the first live television entertainment from Scotland: a performance by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, with Tim Wright and his band.
By 8 p.m. the studio was off the air and the tension relaxed. A buffet was opened and glasses of wine appeared while the guests watched the rest of the evening’s programme from London, starting with Television Newsreel.
The show was seen by a large audience in England but the Scottish viewing numbers were  small, with only 2730 licence holders on record as of March 14 1952, this in a time where only the very few dared not to have a Licence!  In Helensburgh, John Logie Baird’s birthplace, there were just ten licence holders.
Five years later it was the turn of STV.
"This is Scotland" was an hour of entertainment, anchored by James Robertson Justice, to mark the opening of STV on August 31 1957.
STV dispensed with dignitaries and there was no prayer of dedication, but instead a big variety show featuring singers and dancers and other celebrities including Alastair Sim, Ludovic Kennedy and Stanley Baxter.
The STV programme has considerable Helensburgh interest, including Jimmy Logan in his prime, and a film clip from the south of France in which Deborah Kerr was interviewed with David Niven.John Logie Baird was not forgotten; James Robertson Justice paid him an elaborate tribute and showed a replica of the early 'Televisor' set.
Jack Buchanan in the inevitable top hat and tails; rather incongruously he led the audience in a chorus of " belong to Glasgow. It must have been one of Buchanan’s last public appearances,  he was to die of cancer just two months after the STV opening.

A natural disaster … in all 50 states’ is unfolding just as travelers disperse nationwide after Thanksgiving
As millions of Americans head home after Thanksgiving, the coronavirus could be hitching a ride — threatening to plant seeds of infection across the country as the US on Sunday topped more than 100,000 new cases for the 27th consecutive day.
So far Sunday, the United States has reported 109,671 new cases and 731 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
A surge of new travel-related infections could overwhelm hospitals already stretched to capacity. Hospitalizations of Covid-19 patients reached a record high of 93,238 on Sunday, trumping Saturday’s record-breaking 91,635 figure, according to the Covid Tracking Project.
Site: https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/node/12882
It is the third time there have been over 90,000 Americans hospitalized with Covid-19 — the first being Thursday with 90,481 before a drop to 89,834 Friday that could be attributed to inconsistencies in reporting over Thanksgiving.
“There’s no way that the hospitals can be fully prepared for what we’re currently facing,” emergency medicine physician Dr. Megan Ranney said.
“This is like a natural disaster occurring in all 50 states at the same time. There are not adequate beds. There are not adequate staff. And because of the lack of national preparation, there are still not adequate supplies,” said Ranney, a CNN medical analyst and director of the Brown-Lifespan Center for Digital Health at Brown University.
“Here in Rhode Island, we are currently planning to open our field hospital on Tuesday because our hospitals are so full of sick Covid-19 patients. But not every state has that option,” she said.
Site: https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/node/12886
“And even if you open a field hospital, if you have hundreds of staff who are sick — which is what many states across the country are currently facing — if you don’t have nurses and doctors and respiratory techs, even a field hospital isn’t going to save you. Our health care system is literally at the breaking point right now, thanks to Covid-19.”
New cases now mean new hospitalizations by Christmas
Sunday is expected to be the busiest air travel day of the entire pandemic even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that Americans not travel for Thanksgiving.
Roughly 6 million travelers passed through security at US airports after the CDC’s travel warning in the week leading up to Thanksgiving.
But it will be weeks before anyone knows how much of a role Thanksgiving gatherings and travel play in new hospitalizations and deaths.
Site: https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/node/12893
“When you look at people who are hospitalized today, they were infected two weeks ago, maybe more,” said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington University. “And then it takes usually another week for folks to succumb to the illness.”
So infections picked up on Thanksgiving “are going to show up in three weeks and are going to show up in deaths over Christmas and New Year’s and are going to spread in every state,” Ranney said.
Statistics reported in the days after the holiday might show a relative dip in Covid-19 cases, followed by a surge due to a lag in government agencies’ reporting over the long weekend.
And given coronavirus’ lengthy incubation time and how long it takes an infected person to test positive, cases related to Thanksgiving are unlikely to show in public data until the first full week of December at the earliest.
Even before then, Covid-19 is killing Americans at a staggering rate. At least 1,189 new deaths were reported on Saturday alone, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Site: https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/node/12894
More than 266,000 people in the US have died from Covid-19 since the pandemic began.
Birx: ‘If you’re young and you gathered,’ get tested
Health experts say anyone who gathered with people outside their household should take serious precautions in the coming days, especially young people who might be carrying and spreading coronavirus without any symptoms.
“If you’re young and you gathered, you need to be tested about five to 10 days later,” said Dr. Deborah Birx on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “You need to assume that you’re infected and not go near your grandparents and aunts and others without a mask.”
Birx, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, recommended those over age 65 get tested immediately if they develop any symptoms.
“If you’re over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving — if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately,” she said.

ER doctor wants people to follow stay-at-home orders
Many hospitals are on the brink of exceeding capacity, threatening reduced care for everyone — even those without coronavirus. So officials around the country have reinstated or rolled back on restrictions. In Los Angeles County, a three-week stay-at-home order goes into effect on Monday.
What I wish is that people would follow those stay-at-home orders,” said Ranney, the emergency medicine physician in Rhode Island.
“I can’t tell you how many patients I take care of who tell me, ‘Well, I just went to an indoor restaurant.’ Or, ‘I just went to a party with a few friends. I didn’t actually think I was going to catch Covid.’ So those stay-at-home orders are critical.”
The Los Angeles County stay-at-home order prohibits all public and private gatherings with people outside a single household.
Site: https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/node/12897
“Residents are advised to stay home as much as possible and always wear a face covering over their nose and mouth when they are outside their household and around others,” the county’s public health department said.
The order is in effect through December 20. It does not apply to “faith based services and protests, which are constitutionally protected rights,” the health department said.
Essential retail businesses will be limited to 35% occupancy, while the occupancy limit for nonessential retail operations, personal care services and libraries will be 20%, the county said.
“Even if you’re not feeling sick, the simple act of gathering with people outside your household puts everyone at risk,” county health director Barbara Ferrer said.
Site: https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/node/12899
Ranney said it’s possible some schools and workplaces can operate safely if precautions are met.
“I think it’s really important that you keep safe workplaces and safe schools open,” she said. “We know that in those structured settings, where people are masked, keeping a distance, having adequate ventilation, the spread of the virus is pretty low in those settings,” she said.
“I am hopeful that that type of order will be effective. And we’ve seen in France that it works,” Ranney said. “I sure hope it will be (effective) in L.A., and I hope the rest of the country can follow suit. Because we need to do something, or — again — this virus is just going to just continue to grow out of control.”

California set a new pandemic record on Sunday with 7,415 Covid patients in its hospitals, according to data provided by the California Department of Health.
That eclipses the previous California hospitalization record of 7,170 people on July 21.

Old masks become hot and stuffy too. Not only they do damage your makeup and are unhygienic, but they also make breathing uncomfortable and difficult .
And on the other hand, another harmful effect of wearing this kind of mask is how it makes you feel: ignored, isolated, misunderstood, frustrated and even depressed…
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Many people HATE to wear a mask for these same reasons…
But, masks aren’t going to disappear anytime soon, are they ? That’s exactly why a team of professional designers have been working on this issue to find a comfortable and affordable solution to the problems that masks have created…

Yet I also wanted to explore how we, as people, struggle against and hopefully overcome forces like social inequality, environmental disaster and the threat of war. Yes, I wanted to use these books as a means of writing jokes about Internet culture and what might happen if smartphones ever worked our they were smarter than their owners. This is what I set out to do when I started writing my Battlestar Suburbia series, the third of which, Sashay to the Centre of the Earth is out now. As such it’s an immensely powerful tool for science fiction authors like me because it lets us manoeuvre readers into a place where we can explore dense and difficult ideas in a way that feels lighter than the atomic weight of helium. Used in the right way it can also help us to confront and work through the things we repress in ourselves and stigmatise in others. Humour can do far more than bring us happiness (which is obviously important when we’re looking for our next read). This is because, as the OG daddy of psychology, Sigmund Freud, pointed out, there’s little trivial about making someone laugh. I’d challenge people to reconsider this and embrace funny science fiction – and this isn’t only because I write it. Yet when it comes to science fiction, many of us seem to think dark and serious books and films are ‘proper’ works of the imagination and anything set in space that contains jokes is a tentacle’s breadth from being Jar Jar Binks. Perhaps they’ve never seen Elon Musk’s hair plugs up close. Maybe it’s because they’re afraid of aliens, or dark and distant planets.

The winners will be revealed with much laughter and irreverence at the Groucho Club on the 17 April 2023. Earlier judges included Marian Keyes, Joanna Scanlan, Pauline McLynn, and Shazia Mirza. Recent judges have included Maureen Lipman, Lolly Adefope, and Joanne Harris. The Longlist for all categories will be announced on 14 December 2022 and the Shortlist on 22 February 2023. The Unpublished Comedy Novel prize each year is a book deal with HarperCollins. Honorary awards received by Ruth Jones, Meera Syal, Jilly Cooper, and Deborah Frances-White both support and recognise the world of witty writers.ĬWIP, now in its fourth successful year, recognises, celebrates, and encourages witty women authors. These celebrated writers will be welcomed into the CWIP family which already hails Dolly Alderton, Jesse Sutanto, Nina Stibbe, Laura Steven, and Candice Carty-Williams as celebrated alumni. This is the newest addition to CWIP’s annual published and unpublished prizes and is set to showcase even more of the wittiest wit written by women – this time in a shorter form of between 5,000-15,000 words per story. The shortlisted entries will also be published by Farrago, the home of humorous fiction, in a special anthology in September 2023. Farrago has joined forces with Helen Lederer’s game-changing Comedy Women in Print (CWIP) to curate The Comedy Short Story Prize, the first award celebrating the funniest short story writing by women.

Millie Bobby Brown
Millie Bobby Brown rose to fame at just 12 years old when Netflix’s Stanger Things premiered. Brown has been nominated for an Emmy for her portrayed of “Eleven” in the series. Having turned 18 this past February, Brown is no stranger to uncomfortable comments surrounding her age.
Brown became friends with rapper, Drake, in 2018, despite their 18 year age difference. The stars were fans of each other’s work which then turned into a solid friendship. This friendship concerned many people, inciting uncomfortable comments insinuating that Drake was “creepy” and had “ulterior motives.” Some even went as far to say that Drake was “grooming” Millie. In response to these comments, Millie stated in an interview,"Why u gotta make a lovely friendship ur headline? U guys are weird." Brown claimed that Drake was someone who has helped her navigate the entertainment industry, offering his "wisdom and guidance." Millie was only 14 at the time that people were sexualizing her and turning her friendship with Drake into something completely inappropriate. Although some of the comments may have been made out of sheer concern for the young star, the comments did not have to go as far as they did.
When Millie turned 18 in 2022, she opened up about the oversexualization that she has faced in the media. Mara Wilson, another child actor, expressed her concern over Brown after she read a slew of inappropriate comments about her. An article from Buzzfeed touched on this stating, “After reading tweets from grown men about Millie, who is a teenager, Mara said that she ‘felt sick’ and then ‘furious.’ ‘What’s really at play here [is] the creepy, inappropriate public inclination to sexualize young girls in the media’ she wrote.” This same article touches on an interview that Millie had with Deborah Frances-White and Susan Wokoma, just a few weeks after she turned 18. Millie stated that she had “definitely been dealing with [being sexualized] more within the last two weeks of turning 18 — definitely seeing a difference between the way people act and the way that the press and social media have reacted to me coming of age...It’s a very good representation of what’s going on in the world and how young girls are sexualized. I have been dealing with that — but I have also been dealing with that forever.” When Millie posted photos from her 18th birthday (seen below), the comment section was full of disturbing sexual comments.
Tumblr media
There was also a forum posted to Reddit that had a “NSFW” warning attached to it that stated it would not be open to the public until Brown’s 18th birthday. A Reddit user explained that the page was intended to post “sexual images” of the child star once she was of legal age. Prior to the forum being banned, it had amassed over 6,000 subscribers. A screenshot of the forum can be seen below.
