while the story uses cricks death as a way to further villainize kaldena, his death is deeply important to the narrative and any version of the story where he survives is a sanitized version of it. it is an event that spurs someone into action and it is tied to the best part of temenos' story, ie. where you lead his phantom (or rather are led by it) in part to guide a soul into the afterlife. without that what do we have. and furthermore his absence is important and his death at the hands of the church is important to understanding its corruption. that it does not matter how pure of heart or intention you may be, if the system deems you a threat or otherwise undesirable, you will be next. that is the whole point.
