ok i just got this thought out of nowhere but blog divers (people who scroll through a blog and reblog things that were posted YEARS AGO) are actually a super important part of the tumblr ecosystem
With people going inactive and deactivating, a lot of classic tumblr posts and also missed gems get lost because those connections get broken. Even on my own blog I forget about posts I made until I see someone in my activity reblog one of them- which then inspires me to reblog it myself because it was a good post and I want my new followers to see
do not feel bad about diving through someone's blog and reblogging shit from years ago, it keeps dashboards alive
(and if anyone has a problem with that, they can just block you or they can delete the root post ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, two things that have absolutely no effect on the grand scheme of our lives)

StreamBuilder: our open-source framework for powering your dashboard.
Today, we’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re open-sourcing the custom framework we built to power your dashboard on Tumblr. We call it StreamBuilder, and we’ve been using it for many years.
First things first. What is open-sourcing? Open sourcing is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. In more accessible language, it is any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit.
What, then, is StreamBuilder? Well, every time you hit your Following feed, or For You, or search results, a blog’s posts, a list of tagged posts, or even check out blog recommendations, you’re using this framework under the hood. If you want to dive into the code, check it out here on GitHub!
StreamBuilder has a lot going on. The primary architecture centers around “streams” of content: whether posts from a blog, a list of blogs you’re following, posts using a specific tag, or posts relating to a search. These are separate kinds of streams, which can be mixed together, filtered based on certain criteria, ranked for relevancy or engagement likelihood, and more.
On your Tumblr dashboard today you can see how there are posts from blogs you follow, mixed with posts from tags you follow, mixed with blog recommendations. Each of those is a separate stream, with its own logic, but sharing this same framework. We inject those recommendations at certain intervals, filter posts based on who you’re blocking, and rank the posts for relevancy if you have “Best stuff first” enabled. Those are all examples of the functionality StreamBuilder affords for us.
So, what’s included in the box?
The full framework library of code that we use today, on Tumblr, to power almost every feed of content you see on the platform.
A YAML syntax for composing streams of content, and how to filter, inject, and rank them.
Abstractions for programmatically composing, filtering, ranking, injecting, and debugging streams.
Abstractions for composing streams together—such as with carousels, for streams-within-streams.
An abstraction for cursor-based pagination for complex stream templates.
Unit tests covering the public interface for the library and most of the underlying code.
What’s still to come
Documentation. We have a lot to migrate from our own internal tools and put in here!
More example stream templates and example implementations of different common streams.
If you have questions, please check out the code and file an issue there.

It’s that time again. It’s Tumblr’s 2022 Year in Review!
Every year, the team behind Fandometrics analyzes, categorizes, and ranks all the most discussed things on Tumblr—that’s a year’s worth of your tags, searches, posts, likes, and reblogs—and packages them up into a little thing we like to call Year in Review.
Tumblr’s Year in Review contains a full 365 days’ worth of data, but it runs from October 21, 2021, to October 20, 2022. Tragically, this means Goncharov (1973), the greatest mafia movie ever made, will not appear on the lists this year. We’re just as disappointed as you are, but that gives us all something to look forward to in 2023—especially if @vancityreynolds’ remake gets a release date.
This Year in Review has all your classics like Movies, Web Series, and Anime & Manga. It's also got last year’s new lists (because, frankly, what would a Year in Review in 2022 be without Genshin Impact Characters and Minecraft Streamers?). And we’ve added some new lists for you this year, too—a brand new Formula 1 list and a few special editorial deep dives.
Stay tuned this month. There may be a few surprises along the way. Maybe even an exciting launch next week. Who knows! We certainly don’t! Not a clue. For now, here's Tumblr’s Year in Review for you to dig into.

Hello, Tumblr. Labs division here!
Back in June, we announced our comeback as a new team that would imagine big ideas for Tumblr—and would build them in public (aka with you).
Today we're very excited to announce our first failure. The first experiment we want to loudly, publicly admit didn’t work. We’re pretty excited about this because trying and failing are a big part of learning.
A little background
A few months ago, we ran interviews with lots of people on Tumblr to get a better sense of what works and what needs to be better.
Among other things, we heard that people discovering (or rediscovering) Tumblr really struggle to understand how to make it work for them. They sometimes don't know how to follow the right blogs to curate their dashboard, or how to use likes, replies and reblogs to interact with a particular fandom.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg, really! Some might be lucky and have friends to teach them, but many come here to find friends in the first place, and leave feeling lost and overwhelmed.
So here at Labs we're working on ideas to help people discover what makes Tumblr a unique corner of the internet, making it easier for them to find belonging here.
Our (failed) idea
Our first idea was to simplify certain parts of our interface, thinking through each element and putting what is important to you front and center. We called it "Mini"—mostly because it was a cute name.
We started work on the post interface first, because that's the most important part of your experience on Tumblr, and we wanted to improve some of the problems there.
Our goal was to make labels and actions on posts easier to differentiate, and make each post the same height, so diving into a long post is a choice. To achieve that, we designed a new header, a new footer with separate actions, and a mini version of the post:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we started to build it, we realized that scrolling through the dashboard after the changes… didn’t feel right. It didn’t feel like Tumblr anymore. But we didn’t want to make a decision based solely on our own gut feelings… we needed to ask the Tumblr community.
An essential part of how we're working in Labs is speaking to people who use Tumblr (and those who don't use it, but could love it) pretty much on a daily basis. So we showed them this idea, and their response was indifferent at best, and confused at worst.
We learned that it's hard to limit the height of a post without sacrificing the magic of reblogs, and that loss was too meaningful for us to pursue this any further. So we're putting it in the trash.
What's next
So Mini didn’t work out! That’s okay. We’ve learned a lot. While minifying posts might not be the answer, there were parts of the idea that worked, and you might even start to see some improvements being tested from what we learned. We’ll see where that goes!
We're working on other ideas at the same time, and some of them are getting a lot of love from people in research. So the next time you hear from us, we'll hopefully have something more successful to share—stay tuned!
With love, Labs division

Due to recent ~revelations~ we're diving into a particular snapshot of 2014 - Hobama. That's right, the great epic love story of Harry Styles and 44th President of the United States Barack Obama. Don't worry, we'll explain. Also, Cher + Lauren suggest a new ship between Rat Czar and Lanternfly Lieutenant.

Hello!
I'm doing a deep dive into my 11k+ likes. Is there an easier way than using the down/end key to scroll all the way down to my first likes? I've only managed to make the page unresponsive and I'm nowhere near the end. Is there anything in the works to search likes?
Thank you!
Answer: Hey, @bloosketch!
Unfortunately no, there is no work planned for the Likes view at this time. We love the Likes view ourselves, and want to work on it—especially to add functionality like searching and organizing Likes. But it’s just not a priority yet, and it is unlikely this will change anytime soon either. But there is one thing you can do, and it’s pretty nifty.
This one neat trick you can try on web is to simply turn off Endless Scrolling on your dashboard preferences. From here, go to the Likes page and hit Next at the bottom for the next page, and you will see the URL update like this: https://www.tumblr.com/likes?before=1458768134.
That last number is a unix timestamp. You can put any unix timestamp there, and it will jump back to that period in time. So, if you know when your first likes were made, you could just jump all the way back to that time via the URL.
We hope this helps. Have a great day!
Love,
—Cyle

Thursday February 23.
Photographers on Tumblr. I mean, there's enough of 'em.
There are #photographers on tumblr. Did you know?
We kid, of course, as all the world knows there are photographers aplenty populating our world. And if fandometrics are to be believed, photographers are the third biggest community on the dashboard itself. They are a talented bunch, too, taking images of just about anything: street scenes, wildlife, extraordinary vistas, the spectacle and fury of the weather, found poetry, symmetry, sunlight, moonlight, domestic scenes, liminal spaces, and, of course, the human form in all its wonderful shapes, sizes, and beings. Photography really is an art—and this really is a community of artists. Good ones, too.
We now leave you with this imperative: go out today, find your nearest bookstore, and pick up a copy of Susan Sontag's On Photography. This will be training for your cognitive faculties. Your second instruction is to dive in here into #photographers on tumblr. This will be training for your eyes.
