Next in 1930s fashion is Zelda Darlington, who now goes by her wedded name Duplanchier. Although her looks here much more subdued than they were in the 1920s, they fit not only her current life but also her personality. We even see a retroactive return to many of muted tones she wore in her younger years. While these colors are more subdued than the bright ones she wore in New Orleans, they are also far from the somber palette of Josephine’s looks. Rather, they are calming and earthy, much in the same way Zelda views her life now.
Many of her looks are also suitable for work, although there are still hints of a more fanciful style of dress that she enjoyed in the last decade. This includes her wedding look, and even the silk party dress that she has now; however the latter is very much in line with the silhouette of this decade, representing Zelda embrace not only of their new life, but also the hyper-feminine, almost romantic looks that are now in fashion and well aligned with her personal style.
However, much of the growing rigidity of style in the 1930s as compared to the 1920s is absent in her looks, in part due to her lifestyle but also her personal fashion. We can see this perhaps most clearly in her hair, which is cut to a modern length but never really worn in the heavily styled coiffures and curls of the period. And of course her outfits are rounded out by her personal choice of pearls, now always seen in her wedding ring, and her sister Rosella’s floral pressed jewelry.

Kicking off a new decade in fashion is Josephine Duplanchier, who’s 1920s looks once epitomized the boldness of that era. Now she’s seen in the early years of the 1930s, out of her element stylistically and in life. For this reason, her color palette has gone from vibrant tones of red, teal, and yellow to a blend of purples and olives. While many of these colors are found in her earlier looks, they are now in a variety of somber tones to match her mood and that of this new decade.
However, we can still see some pops of bold color in this new version of Josephine, like her red heels or her mother’s ruby red ring which she wears when given the rare opportunity. Her silhouettes are also torn between decades, which would be sensible as she’s still wearing some of her older clothes; but her going out dress, which makes her feel the most like herself, is well out of style by this period. For a woman who prides herself on new bold trends, this represents an attachment to the past more than an adjustment for the period she’s living in.
Of course she has more or less been forced to adopt some of the stylistic accompaniments of her new life, like her work apron and kerchief. However even there, we can see elements of Josephine’s personality such as the pair of high waisted pants that she has stolen from her partner Giorgio and now prefers to wear during the day.

We leave this decade in fashion history with the sim who will take us through the next generation of the legacy: Violette Darlington. Violette (or Little Lottie, as her Aunt Josephine calls her), is an intense and vivacious toddler, just as quick to throw a tantrum as she is to become fixated on a new dress or toy.
She can also be incredibly charming, her olive green eyes seemingly more fascinated with and cognizant of her surroundings than the adults around her expect. This is perhaps because she spends very little time with other children and is more comfortable talking with her aunt or parents than amongst her peers.
This is reflected in her wardrobe, which is rather mature and fanciful, rather than equipped for playing or adventure. Violette delights in this collection of clothing, each of which was specially bought for her by her father. We can see other elements of Antoine and Zelda’s indulgent parenting throughout her wardrobe, such as her collection of embroidered socks to match each outfit and the ever present accessory in her curly hair.

As a look back into the last decade of fashion and an insight into the next, we have one final lookbook for the 1920s. That is of course for our next heiress in her early childhood years and final months in her beloved home city of New Orleans.
All of her clothes are very trendy, and would recently have been bought for her by her father. They are also more practical for strolling through the streets or reading alone than they are for playing with other children her age. She is a vivacious and excitable young girl, and her colors and patterns reflect that. They are also more in line with the tones her father Antoine and Aunt Jo tend to wear, as she is more like them in temperament and spirit than her mother Zelda.
She does however share her mother’s imagination and starry eyes, and we can see her dressing to be the young lady she images herself to be, or as her father likes to call her, the Little Princess. The quality of her wardrobe as well as her bows and Peter Pan collars impart the impression of a fanciful, if spoiled, young girl.

Ringing in the golden age of the roaring twenties is our heiress Miss Zelda Darlington. There is some continuity with her older lookbooks, mostly in her silhouette and color choices. As hemlines reach their shortest in the mid 20s, Zelda’s dresses still remain relatively conservative given her career as a nightclub singer and her free-spirited lifestyle. She still prefers blues and warm tones of yellow and orange, but the hues of these colors have grown brighter and bolder, as she herself becomes more confident.
Of course the biggest difference to her earlier lookbooks is her hair. Symbolic of her deeper anxieties toward life, Zelda’s long hair has been cut into a classic 20s bob. She usually styles it in simple waves, but it is often also seen unkempt when she spends her days at home with Antoine.
There is also much more ornamentation and flashiness than any of her earlier lookbooks. We see this particularly in her headbands, which she wears to highlight her short hair. However, her jewelry of choice still remains a string of pearls, harkening back to her innocence. With some outfits, she even continues to wear her sister Rosella’s ring, signifying that no matter how much she has changed, Zelda still remains deeply tied to her past.

As we move deeper into the 1920s, Josephine’s wardrobe has only grown bolder. She has cut off her long curls and now sports a classic 1920s bob, either in loose waves or sharp straightened points. Her clothes are also dominated by a similarly bright color palette of her early wardrobe, only now she has incorporated more geometric prints to showcase changing art deco fashions and her own emboldening personality.
She is also our first character to wear pants outside of the athletic or swimwear categories. This is a purposeful choice for Josephine’s character, as she has made a conscious effort to embody what the era would view as masculine traits and also delights in pushing boundaries.
There is also a bit more sophistication creeping into her wardrobe than there was in the early 1920s. Her sharp suits, crisp patterns, and more subdued accessories lean heavily into the professional woman she is burgeoning into, managing not only her own jazz club but also other musician’s careers.

In staunch opposition to some of the more austere, practical Darlington lookbooks that we’ve seen in this decade is Rosella Darlington in the early 1910s. Now twenty years old, she is the epitome of late Edwardian, pre-war fashion, with its flowing layers of fabric, high waistlines, and slimmer, full length dresses.
Through a combination of her own sewing skill and Lady Harrington’s gifts, Rosella’s wardrobe has matured immensely since her teenage years. She has moved away from childish elements like short hemlines and Peter Pan collars, instead leaning heavily into decadent fabrics and a modern silhouette. However, there’s still a sort of dreamy girlishness to all of her looks, highlighted by her pastel, rose, and white color palette.
She has also fully embraced the luxury that her younger wardrobe hinted at. Judging from her looks, she is far from a day maid who lives on a farm. Rather, her style tells the story of how she envisions herself. For this reason, there are elements of late Victorian fashion like puffed sleeves and dramatic hats that highlight her Edwardian style. These remind her of her grandmother, and make her looks even more fanciful than other, more modern wardrobes, like those Lady Georgiana Harrington epitomizes.
There is some overlap between Rosella and Lady Georgiana’s looks, notably in the outfit categories and jewelry. All of Rosella’s jewels are also seen in Georgiana’s lookbook, indicating that George shares her expensive items to make Rosella’s wardrobe possible. The exception to this is a small pair of pearl and ruby earrings that George gave to Rosella on her 18th birthday. Rosella wears these with many of her looks, from her finest evening gown to her morning dress, and I imagine that they are her most prized possession.

Lady Georgiana Harrington’s style is on the cusp of high fashion in the late Edwardian period. Her dresses and suits are all representative of the type of forward-facing, luxurious clothing that young wealthy women wore at this time.
Despite the luxurious and trendy nature of her wardrobe, it is still not ostentatious. Rather, it has a sort of old-world, refined wealth that harkens to her aloof but elegant demeanor. Similarly, it leans heavily into rich, but still cold, jewel tones that are not excessively ornamented or frilly. Rather, she prefers her ornamentation in the form of a wide variety of custom jewelry, set with precious stones and multi layers of pearls.
Her lookbook is also governed by a different set of outfit categories than we see in the majority of Darlington lookbooks. Rather than having outfits designed around practical use or weather, Lady Georgiana’s looks are determined by time of day and specific outings. Like most women of her status in this period, this dictated up to eight outfit changes a day, with a minimum of a different outfit worn for each meal and frequent changes in between.
While indicative of her class and wealth, this is also representative of the sort of life that Lady Harrington leads. Her very dress is governed by strict rules of propriety and decorum. Her choice to wear her evening gowns during the day or her morning gown as a house dress is thus not only a personal eccentricity, but an attempt to make herself comfortable and in control of her surroundings.

Next up in 1920s fashion is the one and only Antoine Duplanchier. Born in 1896, he’s seen here throughout the decade, when he is in his 20s and early 30s.
His style is a blend of laid-back 1920s fashion with a touch of showmanship. He has very little use for formal clothing, and is not often seen in a suit or even a jacket of any sort. When he does wear a full three piece suit there is a sort of purposeful boldness in his style, like the pinstripe jacket with the red tie or the purple silk robe that he wears above his jacket. Rather, Antoine is usually in a vest with a patterned tie, which is both due to his own level of comfort and the heat in New Orleans.
All of his looks also have a sort of decadent element that harken to his on-stage persona and his charming personality. We see this in his choice of colors, his use of patterns, and small touches like the feathers in his hats.

Fully exemplifying late 1910s fashion is our interim heir Virginia Darlington. She’s seen here throughout WWI and immediately after, when she’s approximately 18-23 years old. The austerity that she’s always had in her wardrobe is still present and she’s taken on some militaristic influences like her olive green tones, two piece suits, prominent belts, and wide lapels.
Her outfits—and in particular her hairstyles—are much more “buttoned up” than they were when she was a teenager. This is meant to show that serious, philosophical side of Virginia has become more professional, with tangible goals and a burgeoning idea of how to attain them.
Her looks are by no means formal, but they are very public. She has a number of outfits that are appropriate for going out. These are not for events and parties, but for day to day errands and socializing, as would be required for her new forward-facing career in charity work.
Even her party wear has little ornamentation, and Virginia purposefully chooses to never wear jewelry or any sort of soft colors that could be perceived as ostentatious or “frilly.” In fact, many of her looks lean heavily into masculine trends of the era, which is both indicative of her style and her “masculine” goals such as a professional career and an independent life outside of the domestic sphere.

Bringing us out of the Edwardian era and into mid-late 1910s fashion is Zelda Darlington during her teenage years in Henford, just before and throughout World War I.
While Zelda’s outfits are different than they were when she was a child, they are thematically and tonally similar. This is in part because Zelda’s life has not grown much since these years. Despite the changing nature of the world around her, she remains purposefully insulated on Darlington farm.
This is partially due to her growing anxiety about the outside world, but also to her deep dedication to her parents, and in particular, her father. While her mother and Isaiah handle much of the animal and house care, Zelda and Oliver are responsible for the gardening, and so her outfits do feel very practical and pastoral. They also have a sort of cozy, stay-at-home vibe, with her large knitted sweaters and blousy tops.
However, we still see that same sort of story-book whimsy that she had when she was a child, represented by her embroidery, hairstyles, and girlish accessories. This shows that in the back of her mind, she does tend to live in a faraway place, created for her by her books, imagination, and the stories that Rosella told her.
She also sometimes wears small, simple necklaces and a pressed flower ring, items that I imagine were left to her by Rosella. These are literal remnants of her beloved older sister, but also show how above any of the other Darlingtons, Rosella’s wild, hopeful spirit remains alive in Zelda.

As we approach the cusp of a new decade, we enter another era of Darlington lookbooks. Up first is Zelda as a child, circa 1909 when she’s 8 years old.
Zelda is a shy and quiet child who prefers the company of her family to anyone else. She is most comfortable at home on the farm, and her wardrobe reflects that. Out of the Darlington girls, Zelda’s outfits are the most suited for farm work. This is especially apt because she constantly strives to help her parents, as she sees the willfulness of her sisters better than anyone else.
The only exception in her practical wardrobe is her party / formal outfit, which is very on trend for the late Edwardian period. I imagine that her sister Rosella made this dress for her, so that Zelda would have at least one “proper” outfit in her wardrobe.
Zelda is also a dreamer, constantly seeking out new worlds in books and studying music with her father. For this reason there is also an element of whimsy and fantasy in her looks. I can imagine her picturing herself as a young protagonist in a fairy tale, and dressing how she thinks the heroine would, braiding her hair and singing to the birds.

Wrapping up this era in Darlington fashion is arguably my favorite sim to dress in the 1900s, Rosella Darlington.
Rosella’s teenage lookbook in the mid-late 1900s combines elements of younger style like her swing silhouettes, Peter Pan colors, and short hemlines with luxurious and fashionable elements like embroidery, silk, and lace. Together they are meant to give the effect of a young Edwardian girl playing dress up. This is highlighted by her pastel color choices and fanciful incorporation of ribbons and bows.
The idea that Rosella primarily clothes herself as a game of dress up is also seen in the practicality of her clothes. While she does have some outfits for farm work, many of her looks are impractical and ill suited for her life on the farm, like her French heels and small, decorative hats.
I imagine that her favorite thing to do with her new sewing machine is to embellish her older clothes with lace, embroidery, and bows or attach ribbons and flowers to her plain straw hats. As she gets more skilled she begins to make clothes for herself, bringing her wardrobe more in line with late Edwardian trends as she gets older.

Next up in Darlington lookbooks is another young Darlington sibling, this time Isaiah during his first years at school in the early 1910s.
Isaiah has always been a very active child, happiest when he’s running outside with his new school friends or his beloved dog Daisy.
His preferred style resembles his father in his younger years, favoring a simple pair of knicker bockers and suspenders for ease of movement.
However, he’s also very much a momma’s boy, quick to come when his she calls and constantly aware of her moods and emotions. I tried to include lots of different socks, knitted items, and gloves to showcase how much time and effort she spends on him.

Our final lookbook of the 1910s is for our two founders: Oliver and Florence Darlington. These two have taken us through thirty years together, so it’s only fitting that our final lookbook of the era be for the two of them.
Now in their late 40s, Florence and Oliver have the life that they always dreamed of as teenagers. Although it has been difficult and immensely painful at times, their adult lives have been relatively free of expectations and pretensions. Their wardrobes reflect this rather simple, cozy life on the farm, governed by practicality and seasonality.
Many of their looks feature knitted or embroidered items, indicative of Florence's talents and care for the family. Oliver still very much embraces his own style, which has grown more comfortable as he's gotten older, but nonetheless has the pops of warm color that he's always had. But as we approach 1920, both Oliver and Florence's outfits remain rooted in the early 1910s, indicating that they have achieved their goals and are content to stay in a nostalgic past as the world moves into a new era.
