The Final Battle and Family
There’s one sentence that always gets me in the cutscene where Nero awakens his Devil Trigger, when he “explains” the situation to Kyrie on the phone.
“When I was a kid I... I was alone. You and Credo were all I knew. And now all of a sudden, I find out I have a family... What am I supposed to do with that..?”
That one sentence just perfectly frames Nero’s feelings. On one side he has answers to his inheritage, and he discovers there are more like him i.e human/demon hybrids that share his blood, kins, a miracle for him who used to dread being ostracized by others for being part demon, he has somewhere he belongs now. He found out the man who saved his life and practically gave him a job is his uncle, who’s been watching out for him the whole time, and his ally thorough this entire adventure was his father, trying to fix his mistake.
When V reveals to Nero Urizen’s idendity as Dante’s older brother, Nero is confused as to why brothers would even think of fighting each other to the death. V explains its a battle of ideals that can only end in death, even if it means killing family. Nero’s answer? “That’s ridiculous.” And it makes sense. As someone who had no blood family whatsoever, and probably envied those who did at some point, he can’t fathom how some could even dare to kill your kin, knowing how important they are from their lack of presence in his life. Family of blood is precious, and irreplacable.
And yet, his father and uncle are hellbent on killing each other. Nero is going to lose the same family he just found for reasons he barely comprehends.
Yes, he has family now, but, what the hell is he supposed to do about them? About the litteral fight to death in between the two monsters that serves as his blood relatives? At first he was shocked, then angry, but now he’s just confused.
Then Kyrie tells him exactly what he needed to hear. Clear the fog away, put aside all that happened until now, forgo your confusion and anger, focus on the now. Nero already knows what needs to be done: He needs to stop them from commiting what they will never be able to take back.
He has failed to protect Credo from being killed, he knows the pain of being too powerless to protect family, but now? He can make a difference. He can save his father and uncle. Save them from themselves. Grudges be damned. They’re a family now goddamnit, and Nero is done being pushed to the kids’ table.
And it is with that determination, and the will to never fail anyone again that he awakens his Devil Trigger. Absolutely peotic.
Another quote that gets me.
Vergil: “This has nothing to do with you. Stand down.”
Nero: “Nothing to do with me!? It has everything to do with me!!”
Vergil: “Nero...”
People have talked to hell and back about Vergil’s reaction in this exchange, (which does deserve a lot of attention!!), but can we talk about Nero’s?
For the whole game, Nero’s has been pushed out. Dante tried his damnest to make Nero as less involved as possible. We know he did it out of care and concern for his only family, the fear of Nero committing patricide, or worse being killed by his own father moving Dante to not involve Nero in any of it. Add on top that he can’t find it in himself to explain, terrified of his nephew’s reaction at learning he murdered his father. A possible one way ticket to having the last remnant of his family cut ties with him for good. Dante could not afford that.
But with no explanation given by Dante, Nero assumed he was kept out because of his weakness, of having his Devil Bringer taken away, of losing Yamato. Ence his hanging on to “deadweight”, an insult that became his label of weakness, that had unknowingly been meant as an excuse to protect him from the bloody family ties.
However, now he knows. This entire time, Dante had been hiding things away from him. All this time, he has been shoved out of the feud between Dante and Vergil, being told left and right that this is “not your fight”, that he should “sit this one out”, that it had “nothing to do with him”. To the brothers and everyone else, their battle is nothing but theirs, and no one has a say in it.
Nero, rightfully, thinks that’s bullshit.
Dante is his uncle. Vergil is his father. And they’re fighting to the death? Fuck yeah Nero has a say in all of this! They’re family! I already explained how Nero felt about the Dante vs Vergil bloody rivalry, and that he found it ludicrous, and now they’re pushing him, the nephew and son, out of the family business? He’s part of that goddamn family! That’s why he blows up at Vergil in this exchange. He’s baffled and angry that they dare tell him he’s unenvolved in this family feud when he’s part of that family too.
Nero seeks acknolegment the wole game, acknowledgment of his power. But now he doesn’t just want his power to be accepted, but his place in the family.
He’s a part of that damn family, and if they don’t want to ackowledge it, they will learn the hard way.
(The exchange when Vergil reaches half health)
Nero: Feeling accepting yet!?
Vergil: Of your existence... or your strength?
Nero: Both you fucking asshole.
(Dialogue when Nero busters Vergil out of his dive move)
Nero: You... will accept... MY EXISTENCE!!
He says it all right there. His existence. His existence within the family, and his right to stop Dante and Vergil in the name of that family.
And he earns it. He bitchslaps Dante out of commission and defeats Vergil. He is acknwoldged. And has they go to stop the Qliphoth, Dante tells Nero to take care, and Vergil leaves him his poetry book with a promise for a reunion. He has been accepted by the both of them.
In winning that battle, Nero officialy became part of the family the only way the Spardas know how to do it.

what are the guards fav radiohead songs. which ones resonate. this is not a request this is a demand (i simply must know)
I don't listen to Radiohead so I just went through their most popular albums and then pulled up the lyrics to see who they fit. Also you didn't clarify what guards you're looking for, so I am just throwing in any of them that fit
Garroth -Thinking About You
Garroth again -I Can't
Zenix -Ripcord
Zenix again -Vegetable
Brian -Stop Whispering
Dale -No Surprises (this hurt me)
Laurance -You (THIS ALSO HURT ME)
Laurance again -Creep (you had to see this coming)
Dante -Climbing Up the Walls
Katelyn -Lurgee
Alexis -Planet Telex
Vincent -Blow Out
Travis -How Do You?
Okay I had to cut this post off because I found a third song that's applicable to Laurance, on the third album. I'm guessing there will be more, and I've frankly listened to enough Radiohead for the night.

My daily reminder to not go into a long Tangent to why Dante is an insufferable writer but actually only the second most annoying piece of shit in Italy literature
I have OPINIONS on Italian authors AND I CAN'T SHARE THEM BECAUSE WHO DOES THAT AFTER HIGHSCHOOL
I am very normal and my very normal obsession is with older text
Calvino is a bitch but inoffensive enough to me.
LEOPARDI IS MY MAN I WILL FISTFIGHT FOR HIM ANY MOMENT!

when i needed to go to the walk-in clinic the other day because i have a (fucking painful) ear infection, the wait time was 2-3 hours. which was frustrating but they were very short staffed, understandable. after 2ish hours in the waiting room, i was finally taken back and wasnt seen for another TWO HOURS. when my doctor came in she was like "sorry, i know the wait times are long!" and i was like "yeah about four hours haha." she apologized and i told her that it was okay because i knew it wasnt her fault and.
the RELIEF on her face. she told me "thank you, you dont know how nice it is to hear that."
we need to start being more understanding and stop being assholes to workers of every kind, especially when it's obvious that they're not having fun either.
i was so so so frustrated that it was taking so long, especially because i started to have a migraine from the lighting, but i didn't take it out on her. stop taking out your frustrations on people who don't deserve it.

Sit Your Ass Down
Nero doesn't know how to take a break. He's always out on a mission; if there isn't one for him, he runs around doing errands or training. Usually, this wouldn't be a problem for anyone but it was starting to become a problem for him. Nero was starting to slowly get sick and while he did his best to ignore it, you and Dante could no longer.
"Nero, sweetie, I think you need to sit and rest for a bit," you say.
"No, no, I'm fine. I really need to get to this job," he dismisses you, softly pushing past you to the kitchen.
You follow the boy, watching him make a quick sandwich before stuffing it in his mouth as he puts everything away. He took a bit of it as he walked back into the living room, looking around for his stuff.
"Nero, have you even properly eaten in the last week?" Dante asks.
"These sandwiches are enough," Nero replies, holding up the half he had left before finishing it.
"Nero, I'm serious, you need to rest," you say.
"Auntie, I promise I'm fine," Nero says, reaching past you to grab his jacket on one of the chairs.
"Nero, I'd listen to your aunt if I was you," Dante says.
You nod, stepping in front of the boy to keep him from moving any further. "Stop and sit."
"You two worry way too much," Nero says. "I'm ok. Now, let me get to this job." He places a kiss on your forehead and gives you a quick hug before trying to get out the front door.
"Nero Alexander Sparda, you sit your ass down right this minute!" you yell.
Nero immediately freezes. You never full-name dropped him unless he absolutely messed up and he absolutely did. He lets go of the door and quickly took a seat on the old tattered sofa Dante has yet to replace due to sentimental value.
"That's much better," you say. "Now, you are going to go up to your room and change while I make you dinner. And don't you dare think about sneaking out. Your father is watching."
Nero turns to the stairs to see Vergil standing just at the top, arms crossed over his chest with a gentle glare on his face.
Nero gulped, turning back to you, and nodded. "Yes ma'am."
You smiled, placing a kiss on his forehead before disappearing into the kitchen.
---
Nero soon emerged downstairs once more after a shower and changing back into his pajamas. He joined his father and uncle in the lounge, laying down on the couch as his father took the recliner nearby.
Dante sat at his desk, feet kicked up with a magazine in hand. He looks up at his nephew, a smirk spreading across his face.
"What's so funny old man?" Nero asks.
"You really thought you could get past your aunt?" Dante asked, flipping the page of his magazine. "You know how that woman is. I can barely get past her."
"Yeah but you're also a simp," Nero replies.
"For that woman, any day," Dante smiles. He removes his feat from his desk as he hears a faint noise from the kitchen that meant you were done.
Your voice fills the room as you walk in with three plates, one for each of your boys. You give Dante his first, receiving a kiss and a "thank you, love," from the man as you set his plate on his desk.
You walk over and set Vergil's plate on the nightstand next to him. Vergil gives a quiet "thank you," before book marking his page.
You stand before Nero, the boy having sat up as he watched you make your way around the room.
He shrinks beneath your stern glare, looking up apologetically. "I'm sorry."
"I know you are sweetheart," you reply. You set the plate down on the coffee table in front of him before sitting down next to the boy.
While he may be 20 now, he would always be the little 8-year-old you met when you first met the twins.
You ran a hand through the boy's hair, he instinctively leaned into your touch and a low purr emitted from him.
"When I say you need to rest, you rest. Not weeks after when I have to yell," you say.
Nero nods, sitting up as you stop messaging his scalp.
"Now eat. I know you're probably really hungry."
As if to confirm it, his stomach growls. A smile spread across your face as you get up to leave the boy to eat.
You later walk out with your own plate, dragging a chair over to sit next to Dante behind his desk. Both of you look out at your family, Dante still wondering why you'd ever choose this but glad that you did.
Vergil had finished his food, the plate completely clean sitting on the nightstand. Nero had also finished, the boy now laying back with an arm over his eyes.
"He called me a simp," Dante mumbles.
"Because you are one," you reply. Dante smiles, giving you a kiss.
"Yes, but he will always adore you the most," Dante replies.
And Nero would, even if he didn't like to admit it. You were his closest thing to a mom and he would do anything for you, even if it killed him.
From the mere mention of his ideals, Nero shifted but didn't seem to wake. You smile, thanking whatever force brought you to meet that little 8-year-old on that one chilly autumn day and made you one with this family.

Laurence wants to hate Dante and fully stop caring but he makes it damn near impossible for him because he won’t argue with him. Laurence already has to grapple with the fact that Dante is a child, him agreeing that he’s horrible just makes Laurence feel even worse for him.
plus dante really looked up to and cared about laurance (and still does). laurance is convinced that dante doesnt anymore until he finds out that dante is always carrying around a picture of him, laurance, and garroth even though laurance and garroth both hate him and laurance is just like. stop making my feelings Complicated i just want to Hate You

I need to get on a stage and, like, viscerally yell something along the lines of “I see it now, by the light of my burning city. You did this.” (Thinking about Aeneid 2.559-582 or so.)

something something about Dante’s immediate response to the inscription on the Gates of Hell:
Tumblr media
…and how Virgil identifies this as cowardice that he must abandon, and how the early circles (the Uncommitted Masses, the Virtuous and Intellectual Pagans, and those who fell for “lust”/love) are the ones Dante feels the most sympathy for, the most of an inclination towards (Dante’s own political life….Aristotle is the “maestro di color che sanno”, “master of those who know”, and his work is arguably the real foundation for the structure of the text, and of course everyone mocks him for the shades of Homer and Virgil including him…and of course, the Dante of the Vita Nuova, who sang the sweet new style of courtly love)…
so that, when, with if not terror, at least trepidation, he asks Francesca what could possibly have lead her into sin, and she says Literature…
Tumblr media
…it’s always the drama of the text, the tale being told, that none of the jokes or fetishizing of the structure ever even begins to touch. (you’d think people who took pop fiction seriously would be able to relate to this more! Dante did!) and of course, finally, Virgil’s pride when finally Dante stops identifying with the sinners—-when the sins have grown so large that Dante “correctly” just condemns them…but, but that Dante kept in his inclination at all! (poor guy, he relapses a little in the s***** forest, not his fault). Better book than the jokes suggest. I’m triggered on behalf of an old Italian man—-what can I say, I was born in Jersey
