I'd love to know what the crew said when they planned this scene...
"We need to have a rat that looks like Alador, pronto!"
"Is the rat Alador transformed?"
"Nope"
"Ok... Is the rat his palisman?..."
"No, why would someone carve a rat that looks like himself?"
"I don't get it, what is the purpose of having a Rat that looks like Alador?"
"Purpose?"

Sociopath Profile: Odalia Blight
Tumblr media
From the animated television series The Owl House (2020-2023) Voiced by Rachel MacFarlane
One of these days, I’ll actually make a profile about one of these mothers that is actually a decent person. I mean, I don’t think it’s impossible. However, Odalia fits into the pattern of substandard parenting that is rather common whenever I talk about mothers in terms of female sociopaths.
[SPOILERS BELOW; SPOILER-FREE VERSION HERE]
The most notable aspect is how controlling she is of her children. She only cares about how they affect her social standing and her bottom line. Danna Terrance mentioned that she specifically had Amity dye her hair green so that her children can be color coordinated. She and Alador force Amity to be friends with Boscha, not caring about how she feels about her. Notably, when she doesn’t have control over a situation, she will lash out.
She is also very manipulative. She obviously lords her daughter’s potential status within a coven as the reason she needs to study so hard and to be around people she and Alador deem worthy. Odalia also has a jewel that telepathically connects to her daughter so she can subtly influence her without anyone around them noticing it. Later in the second episode of Season 2, she manipulates Luz into a deal to get her, Gus, and Willow back into Hexide by tricking her into being the guinea pig for her weapons demonstration.
The lack of empathy should be obvious since she only views her children as tools for her own status. The fact that she also shamelessly sells weapons to the highest bidder also displays how little she cares about the lives affected by her business. She even starts to work for Emperor Belos after he notices that the Blights have enough arms for a personal militia. There’s also the biggest point that she was willing to murder Luz just for being a distraction to Amity.
And there is a considerable lack of remorse for her actions. She gleefully has Luz attacked by Alador’s newest abomination and will continually lord her superiority over Amity as smugly as possible. She was even willing to back out of Luz’s deal when Amity defies her to save Luz. Odalia rants about wanting to get back at her even though she used the “A Blight never goes back on a deal” creed against Luz.
Notably, she can be convinced to do things if they benefit her. Alador is able to talk her down from her revenge tirade by reminding her of that creed and telling her that her friends are making her stronger with her magic. They may not understand why that is, but it is something that helps her get into a coven faster, so she’ll be willing to deal with it.
And the main bulk of this profile was written before it was revealed that she was a knowing accessory to genocide! Turns out the Day of Unity was Belos' plan to destroy the witches and she was providing him with resources the whole time while fully knowing that is exactly what he was planning. When Amity and her friends tell her what it really means, her response amounts to, "No duh! But I cut a deal that'll make the family rich, so we're all good." I don't think anything can really convince you what she's about more than that. Self-profit above all else.

The Importance of The Owl House {A Thesis (?) on Good LGBTQIA+ Representation in Media}
I don't think I have to talk the lot of you all on Tumblr that The Owl House has good LGBTQIA+ representation, this is a microblogging website for ✨the gays✨ but I have thoughts on the show and its representation, especially because this is "children's show" on the Disney Channel!
The Owl House came out in 202O and was created by the lovely Dana Terrace, who as I understand it worked on beloved Gravity Falls (2012, Alex Hirsch) back in the day, {*Gently Holds* THANK YOU DANA TERRACE, MY BELOVED} and is, as Wikipedia describes it, a Fantasy Horror Comedy.
The show is great! It ticks all the boxes for me, chief, which also means it has good LGBTQIA+ representation! As an Asexual and Nonbinary person, I feel seen!
And yes, other shows have the representation I am looking for. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018) have queer representation thanks to Noelle Stevenson, and no matter how to feel about Steven Universe (2013) Rebecca Sugar moved a mountain in queer representation, so shows that wanted to include queer topics could thrive in a cable space! Although they don't do it like The Owl House!
First off, She-ra and the Princesses of Power is on Netflix, and despite the fact that She-ra target audience is children, a stream serves like Netflix can and does get away with "walking the line," plus beside a few references to two women being in a relationship and queer undertones, most of the queer representation happened in the final season.
Secondly, it is public knowledge that Rebecca Sugar at to twist the truth about what Steven Universe was about so Cartoon Network would consider putting it on the air, and dispute fighting for a lesbian wedding later in the series run, language like wife, and girlfriend are never use when talking about queer characters.
Compared to The Owl House, Danna Terrace was open and honest with those at Disney that Luz, The show's main character, would be Bisexual!
“In [development] I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I’m a horrible liar so sneaking it in would’ve been hard,” Terrace wrote. “When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could not represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the channel.” (Variety) “I’m bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit!” Terrace tweeted. “Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am very supported by current Disney leadership.”
To add recent episodes have not to beat around the bush and showed the term "girlfriend" to reference the relationship that has now form between Luz and Amity!
THIS IS A SHOW ON THE DISNEY CHANNEL AND HAS BEEN MAKING HISTORY!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alex Hirsch had to tell someone that works on Gravity Falls that they couldn't add an old lesbian couple in a few frames because Disney would not approve!
The language and the force are important for that watching! The young queer kids that are consuming the media and the cishet adults that are having to watch it alongside their children. Using the term Girlfriends with "extreme" force like in "Eclipse Lake" shows that these two young female-presenting characters are not "just friends". The use of Them/they pronouns in "Eda's Requiem" and other episodes not only refer to the character of Raine Whispers and other characters that we don't know the identity of, normalize the use of they/them pronouns to refer to a single person!
The Owl House is making history thanks to Dana Terrance's "studdorness", the queer fans that are starved for quality reperestation, and the progressing society that is allowing it to say on the air instead of setting it on fire because it is "abnormal".
Granted there are still people out there that wish The Owl House would not be a piece of Queer media, and are trying to do everything to kill it on sight, although let's enjoy the fact that we have made this far in the world of media and we have a beautiful show with amazing resperantation for LGBTQIA+ individuals!

Fatal Infection After Open-Heart Surgery Results in Lawsuit Against 3T Heater-Cooler Maker
A contaminated heater-cooler commonly used during open heart surgery allegedly caused a New Mexico man to suffer a fatal infection, according to allegations raised in a wrongful death lawsuit filed earlier this month against Sorin Group, the manufacturer of the device.
The complaint (PDF) was filed by Danna Brackenbury in the U.S. District Court for Minnesota earlier this month, indicating that her husband, Terrance, died of multisystem organ failure an septic shock in September 2016, after exposure to a 3T Heater-Cooler used during open heart surgery in April 2015.
Terrance Lee Brackenbury developed an M. chimaera infection after undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic valve replacement and ascending aortic aneurysm repair folowing a heart attack while working out at a gym.
The 3T Heater-Cooler is a device commonly found in operating rooms nationwide, which is used to regulate blood temperature during surgery. However, according to allegations raised in the lawsuit, as well as similar claims brought on behalf of individuals nationwide who suffered an infection after open heart surgery, certain devices manufactured by Sorin Group release a contaminated mist into the air of the operating room.
“Mr. Brackenbury contracted the M. chimaera infection, which ultimately led to his illness and death, because the bacteria reached the surgical site near Mr. Brackenbury’s sternum,” the lawsuit explains. “This occurred because the bacteria from the Sorin 3T became aerosolized during his procedure, fluid leakage occurred, by other means, and/or by some combination thereof.”
The FDA first warned about the heater-cooler infection risk following coronary bypass or other heart procedures in October 2015, indicating that a large number of adverse event reports had been received in connection with the device.
In June 2016, a panel of experts were convened to evaluated the problems, indicating that at least 34 reports involving bacterial infections following heart surgery involving heater-cooler systems had been received between January 2010 and August 2015.
Late last year, the federal regulators issued a safety communication warning about the infection problems with 3T Heater-Coolers, indicating that water tanks used by the devices can become contaminated and spread contaminants to other parts of the system, where they can be released into the air of the operating room.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also issued a Health Alert Network advisory over the potential risk of M. Chimaera infections following heart surgery, indicating that about 60% of the 250,000 heart bypass procedures performed each year in the United States involve use of affected 3T Heater-Cooler systems.
The complaint filed by Brackenbury’s wife is one of a growing number of other open heart surgery infection lawsuits  filed nationwide over the 3T Heater-Cooler, alleging that the manufacturers knew about the risk of contamination and failed to adequately warn the medical community, the FDA, and patients of the risks.

Robert Patterson, standing, engages Charleston students into a discussion about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and community as part of the inaugural Entrepreneurial Learning Center program. Submitted photo
Nearly 60 elementary and middle school students in Mississippi have been exposed to entrepreneurial leadership skills this summer, thanks to a traveling program sponsored by the McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement at the University of Mississippi.
The Entrepreneurial Learning Center began meeting in Charleston in late May. It moved to Marks in June and to Vardaman for mid-July and August. Sessions lasted about four hours a day for four weeks in each location.
Rising sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in Charleston were introduced to various health care topics at the request of Dr. Catherine Woodyard, executive director of the local James C. Kennedy Wellness Center.
“Dr. Woodyard, who has worked with the McLean Institute for several years, asked us if we would consider coming to Charleston,” said J.R. Love, project manager for McLean’s Catalyzing Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, or CEED, program. “We’re touching on everything from exercise to diseases, and what it looks like to get into the health care profession as a doctor or nurse.”
Community partners from local health care-related enterprises, including a pharmacist and business owner, served as guest presenters. The goal is that students are continuously learning, developing healthy habits and participating in experiences that build an entrepreneurial mindset.
“The goals of ELC were to provide a transformative experience for our participants and increase knowledge on the concepts of entrepreneurship,” said Robert Patterson, a CEED Innovation Fellow and graduate student from Como. “I believe that this program did successfully meet its goals in promoting entrepreneurship and establishing community development.”
Allison Ford-Wade, UM professor of health, exercise science and recreation management, described the inaugural ELC as “a wonderful experience.”
The local students said that they learned a lot during the program.
“I learned a lot about health and starting a business, “said Terrance Marco, of Charleston.
The Mississippi Development Authority assisted Nash Nunnery, project manager at MDA’s Entrepreneur Center, with providing valuable tools for the students in Charleston and Marks. One of the guests, Allen Kurr, vice president of the Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation, shared with students in Vardaman about the importance of building your brand in business.
Danna Johnson, program coordinator of Catholic Charities in Vardaman, said the ELC-Vardaman “Victory Project” is exciting.
“Eric Williams from Orange Theory Fitness in Oxford was invited to the camp and made a presentation to the students about health and wellness,” she said.
CEED students worked in Marks this summer to establish an Entrepreneurial Learning Center and will continue to work this fall with community members and students in Quitman County. There, County Administrator Velma Wilson worked with CEED students on economic development projects, such as the upcoming Amtrak stop in Marks.
The ELC idea and model were created by the CEED initiative. CEED students are funded through a financial gift from the Robert M. Hearin Support Foundation.
“We are fortunate to have financial support from the Hearin foundation in allowing UM students to connect their desire to see jobs created in Mississippi at the local and state level,” said Albert Nylander, McLean Institute director and professor of sociology.
“Community development, economic development and education were the guiding principles that each of the ELCs was built upon,” Love said. “All of this connects to the work of George McLean, the late owner of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal who started the CREATE Foundation, and Vaughn Grisham, the founding director of the McLean Institute in 1984.”
