A81 FANS PLEASE HELP ME OUT !! Currently on the hunt for a scene in s2 that I remember so vividly but isn’t in any of the transcripts for some reason?
It’s Dan talking to someone- either Clara, Lou, or Cynthia, can’t remember which. He says something about being a monster, and the other person tells him that he IS a monster but he should be proud of it because monsters are cool. its not in ANY of the transcripts and im DYING to find it again. Does anyone remember the ep it was in???

Conversation
Cynthia: You're stupid.
Dan: That's it?
Cynthia: Give it time. It'll eat at you.
[later]
Dan: Am I stupid?
Clara: Yeah, a little bit.
Dan: Damn her.

So the (very interesting) commentary on Static Man vs Arthur has me thinking about names in Archive 81 again, and I keep going back to something a friend said a few months back about how in certain cultures/folk tales, giving something/someone a name is to accept them into your family/society, and that people who never got a name weren't truely human. And how A81 has this theme of names in interpersonal connection in almost every major character?
Rat refuses a name initially, but in his attempts to connect with Dan, eventually gives a nickname to call him by. Not only is this convenient, it can be read as a gesture of friendship in his attempts to win Dan over. His true identity is revealed just before he returns to Visser/The Choir, and the historical society, his chosen family and his god, who's absence had left him lonely. The nickname/new connection left in favour of the old.
Clara initially struggles to see Dan as a person and exclusively calls him "Mapmaker", but drops it completely when he confronts her, instead using his actual name (and frequently). Likewise, when they part, despite so desperately wanting to leave behind all things weird, she gives Dan her real name so he can find her again; perhaps she's accepted him not just as a person but as a friend, and doesn't want to lose the connection. Or, maybe it's tied to her forgetting he'd have a hard time in public: not only a person, but no longer a monster.
Dan gives Caroline back her name around the same time she asks he remove her finger, freeing her from LMG's control. Initially stripped of her name and personhood, "Suit" is more a function than an actual name, a shackle to LMG. She starts to regain her memories too, tying her back to The Cult, and her previous ideals. Also the whole "you are Caroline?" "I was" followed by "state your name, for posterity" "Caroline" right at the end.
In contrast to Clara, who eagerly sheds her old name (a tie to The City LMG forced on her), Lou keeps his new name and cements his connection to The City and desire to be there. He's left his old name, life and connections behind, forged new ones.
Nicholas isn't shy about correcting people who call him Nick, but eventually lets Chris and Static Man get away with it. Less of a breach for his new family, now a permitted nickname only for the people he's closest to. As he becomes increasingly comfortable and close with Chris, he finally stops calling her "Christine", the same function in reverse, ditching his formality as her request as they start to feel like a real family.
Morgan finally gives Nicholas and Static Man her name when she finally agrees to go back with them, as she's no longer just trying to fill a role to survive ("The Clerk") and is now allowing people to help. The name serves as a solid decision and indicator of where she wants to belong, as well as finally establishing/cementing her friendships with Nicholas and Static Man.
Could also touch on the use of Titles in The Golden Age. LMG obscuring its real name in season 1 and never elaborating after. Cynthia not giving her name and refusing to allow any connection to the underlings. The Choir becoming Visser, as it's tied to our world, the deals with the Vos family and the historical society. The Cult not even having a formal name. Alexa very intentionally taking Melody's surname. Dan growing quickly attached to Ratty following giving him a name. The Representative of The Curator leaving his birth name behind because what he does is more important to him than that.
Even meta-wise, there's the fact that Marc has named almost every single character, even those we only meet once, like, nobody is unimportant, nobody is unconnected?
Idk. Just kinda neat.

For the ask game: Archive 82 :D
(I'm assuming that's a typo haha. But I'm so glad you sent me an A81 ask) 1. The first character I first fell in love with
Melody Pendras. She's actually the reason I finished s1. Her character intrigued me and the more I learned about her, the more I became invested in her and, by extension, Archive 81. 2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now Funnily enough, Dan Powell. S1 I was really indifferent towards his character. He wasn't what drew me to the show. S2, however, rectified that. 3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t
I don't get the obsession towards Dromen tbh. But I also understand why I couldn't get into his character. He was introduced initially as a vessel for sponsorships/adverts, which turned me off him. I think if they had sponsor bot created sooner, and instead introduced him later as a reveal of Mark's sacrifice in order to save Dan, I would have liked him much more. 4. The character I love that everyone else hates
Mr. Davenport. Look. I am a simple woman. I hear a very compelling voice with a classic villain archetype, recognize he's bad and don't justify his actions, but still have fun watching him pull shenanigans. 5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
I rarely fall out of love for a character, and the same is said for Archive 81. 6. The character I would totally smooch
Christine Anderson.
Tumblr media
7. The character I’d want to be like
Perhaps Christine? Traveling through an alternate world to explore islands upon islands seems like a compelling fate.
8. The character I’d slap
Cynthia Closer. I never liked her. She doesn't have any traits that compel me. She is cruel and not in a fun sexy way only fictional characters can successfully do. 9. A pairing that I love
Melody x Alexa, Christine x Lou, and, of course, StatNick. All very very good ships to me. 10. A pairing that I despise
I actually don't like Dan x Rat. It low-key makes me uncomfortable. I feel like Rat very much looks at Dan as an experiment first and foremost, and a person second.
