Colmor Cutoff

While in northeast portion of New Mexico, I thought I’d check out a railroad that never quite got completely built: Santa Fe’s Colmor Cutoff. These bridge abutments are some hard evidence that it existed, found in Mt. Dora, near Clayton.

As part of its sprawling system, the ATSF began a line between Boise City, Texas, and Colmor, New Mexico, practically mirroring the Cimarron Route of the precursor Santa Fe Trail.This line would be abandoned just 35 miles short of its completion (Colmor), though trains did run on this section prior to being shut down. A route further south would be favored over this one—the Belen Cutoff.

This location, Clayton, New Mexico, is adjacent to an area of truly dark sky, so I had planned to shoot the Milky Way; it made sense to combine my two interests.

workshops week 9 | cyanotype

This Monday I attended Cyanotype printing with Tutor Gemma Dardis. We were shown the process of working with chemicals and how they react to sunlight/uv exposure to get a print on paper which we converted into an acetate exposure.

Despite the use of two chemicals I thought this process was somewhat more organic in nature which I would prefer in my own practice. I'm interested in using this method as a way of documenting items.

The first image I laid out items on top of clear acetate, I then made this into a print using the UV light exposure box in studio 8 to get the resulting blue cyanotype print. The second image is of it drying on the windowsill.

I think I will call these prints

'Angels in the Window'

"Wet Cyanotype Stocks" was created in the July 2022 heat wave in the UK using hand made cotton rag paper which I had coated with blue print chemicals.

Stocks (or Matthiola Incana) is an annual/perennial growing to two feet swiftly, with sweet smelling flowers that are pollinated by bees, lepidoptera (Moths & Butterflies).

It is also called Tenweeks stock, Gillyflower and Brompton Stock and is also part of the Brassicaceae or Cruciferae family of plants.

Stocks are a traditional British country cottage garden flower but I received this specimen in a bouquet.

I was missing my husband, who was isolating from me after catching Covid helping his parents, but making this art from the flowers he'd bought me helped me feel closer to him.

Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print, which engineers used well into the 20th century to produce simple and low-cost copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints.

The process uses two chemicals: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide.
