Urlaub In Polen — All (Tapete)
Tumblr media
All by Urlaub in Polen
Cologne duo Urlaub in Polen — that’s Georg Brenner (vocals, synths, Moog, guitars) and Jan Philipp Janzen (drums, percussion, Moog, samples) — return after a near decade long hiatus with their new album All. Brenner and Janzen build a sturdy foundation from the rigid rhythms of Krautrock and techno, which they decorate with an eclectic array of elements from mutant disco, post-punk, kosmische psychedelia and the odd curlicue of proggy noodling.
Neu! Is the most obvious inspiration, especially for Janzen whose drums maintain motorik propulsion.  But there is more to All than simple homage. “The Witcher” mashes Clock DVA woodwinds into Hawkwind space rock while riding the overwrought edge of its influences. “2 Sec. Delay” has traces of early 1980s Cabaret Voltaire with shimmering synths and dystopic declamations, “T.H.D.T” features sped up robo-funk and cosmic Moogs that evoke a prog rock riposte to post punk, while “Lts” bubbles gently along taking its cues from the minimal techno of ~scape artists like Pole and Jan Jellinek.
That all this holds together as a cohesive whole is down to Brenner and Janzen’s commitment to their sound and willingness to dip into the unexpected alleyways they encounter along the way. Their music feels lived in and natural in the way they refract the alternative sounds of their homeland through the sound of the English bands that learned from Neu!, Can, Kraftwerk and Cluster to create a meta dialogue that mirrors their own musical relationship. Urlaub In Polen use very specific tropes whilst managing to stand outside time and place. The musical strands from which Urlaub In Polen weave their tapestry are familiar and if the edges are a little shopworn and some patches are faded from overexposure, All makes a good case for the enduring power of their influences and for Brenner and Janzen’s decision to reignite their collaborative projects.

Press Release:
Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to present General Idea: P is for Poodle, an exhibition of works by General Idea (1969-1994) focusing on one of the central motifs in the artist group’s oeuvre: the poodle. Spanning two venues, this exhibition brings together three major installations dating from the early- to mid-1980s. Previously exhibited at the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris as part of General Idea’s retrospective in 2012, two of these three works will be on view in the United States for the first time, along with a selection of paintings, drawings and sculptural wall works. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany this exhibition.
Founded in Toronto in 1969 by AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, General Idea were among the first artists to implement media critique and queer theory in their work. For twenty-five years, they created a pioneering and singular practice that addressed the intersection of art and commerce, the role of the artist and the museum, body politics and, later, the AIDS crisis. Using strategies of appropriation, audience participation, humor and irony, they staged performances and created paintings, posters, photographs, installations, videos, magazines and other multiples that together form a kind of meta-spectacle as much as a formal artistic oeuvre. As Bronson has noted, General Idea “emerged in the aftermath of the Paris riots, from the detritus of hippie communes, underground newspapers, radical education, Happenings, love-ins, Marshall McLuhan and the International Situationists….[It] was at once complicit in and critical of the mechanisms and strategies that join art and commerce, a sort of mole in the art world.”
Known for “its wit, pampered presence and ornamental physique,” the poodle arrived into the visual lexicon of General Idea in the early 1980s and quickly became a vehicle by which the group addressed issues ranging from sexual stereotypes to the commodification of contemporary art. However, beyond its use as an agent of subtle yet substantive political and social critique, the poodle also served as a kind of heraldic device—an emblem for the mythology of General Idea and its processes of mythmaking. Through its various incarnations of the poodle, General Idea strived for a metanarrative that skirted the boundaries between artifact and artifice; history and fantasy; truth and fiction.
The large-scale installation P is for Poodle (The Milky Way from the 1984 Miss General Idea Pavillion) (1982-1983) will be presented at 293 Tenth Avenue at 27th Street. Featuring three poodle mannequins within a dramatically lit stable of bedded hay, it recalls the familiar mise-en-scene of the nativity—the archetypal family unit. Each of the poodles is surrounded by a golden curlicue, suggesting both divine intervention and urination, while a backlit aluminum panel in the background depicts the Canis Major constellation, which appears within the Milky Way. Gilded milking stools, brass buckets and a soundtrack of chanting, drums and audience applause add to the mystery and mysticism.
Also on view at 293 Tenth Avenue, Firewall (1985) further draws attention to the mechanics of display. Presented as a recovered wall fragment from the so-called ruins of the 1984 Miss General Idea Pavillion—an elaborate but unrealized structure that was, according to a myth promulgated by the artist group, destroyed in a fire, it measures more than eighteen feet long and includes over 200 poodle-embellished plaster bricks painted in yellow and orange hues suggestive of the volcanic fires of Pompeii. Among the plaster tiles, a painting displays three poodles bouncing over an inferno, their curlicues now seemingly pulling them towards the flames, evoking pre-Christian pagan rituals. Embedded baby faces and skulls on its frame are repeated alongside the top and bottom of the wall, referencing Renaissance putto and vanitas—love and death.
The erotic subtext of the poodle is most explicitly explored in Mondo Cane Kama Sutra (1984), a cycle of ten large paintings on view at 534 West 26th Street. Each depicts three distinctly colored, stylized poodles against a black background, combined and recombined in various sexually suggestive positions. While their round bodies, fluorescent colors and systematic permutations were formal references to the stylized abstractions of Frank Stella’s Protractor series from the late 1960s, the paintings unabashedly offered a rare, early engagement with gay discourse. The poodles, ultimately, were tongue-in-cheek metaphors for General Idea’s own ménage-a-trois, and as such a potential challenge to the cultural ideal of a nuclear family.

New world news from Time: Analyzing Every Tiara Meghan Markle Could Wear at the Royal Wedding
Not every bride has a royal wedding.
And not every woman wears a crown on her big day. But while Meghan Markle may be just a commoner like the rest of us right now, royal tradition suggests that she will wear a sparkling diamond tiara for her May 19 marriage to Prince Harry at Windsor Castle. The question, then: which tiara will she choose to top off her wedding look? The royal family has quite a collection of diadems at their disposal, many delicate pieces dating back decades — if not a century or more — and carrying the weight of tradition in their cold, hard, priceless diamond hearts. Yet rarely do tiaras see the light of day: they are only brought out for certain state occasions and weddings, like that of Kate Middleton to then-fiancé Prince William back at the royal wedding in 2011.
Assuming that Markle follows in Middleton’s footsteps, here’s our rundown of Markle’s headwear options, based on what’s available to her in the royal vault.
Spencer Tiara
Anwar Hussein—WireImagePrincess Diana, Princess of Wales, in November 1986 during a visit of Bahrain.
The Spencer Tiara is actually owned by Princess Diana’s family, the Spencers, not the royal family. It was a favorite of the late Princess Di, with its romantic curlicue design of diamond “tulips,” stars and scrolls crafted from a few other pieces of jewelry combined into this tiara form — in fact, Diana wore it on her own wedding day to Prince Charles back in 1981, giving it some extra symbolism. (Her sisters also donned it for their nuptials.) It’s currently in the possession of Diana’s father, the Earl of Spencer, and has not been worn since Princess Diana’s death in 1997, although it has appeared publicly as part of exhibitions and could potentially be loaned out for Markle.
Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara
Anwar Hussein—Getty ImagesDiana, Princess of Wales wears the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara (Queen Mary’s Tiara) and diamond earrings during a banquet on April 29, 1983 in Aukland, New Zealand.
The Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara is one of the most dramatic of the options in the royal arsenal, with its memorable Art Deco curlicues and height. It has an illustrious history: crafted by court jewelers Garrard in the early 1900s for Queen Mary, its design is based on a centuries-old Gothic Revival tiara first owned by Princess Augusta of Hesse. That piece is in a separate private collection, but this replica is now in the possession of the Queen, who has loaned it to both Diana and Kate over the years after wearing it herself earlier in her own reign. It consists of a mix of upright pearl drops and diamond arches, some of the pieces borrowed from other tiaras. The Duchess of Cambridge wore it as recently as 2017 at Buckingham Palace, and it was a favorite of Princess Diana’s for formal occasions. But many believe that Markle may not go this route, because it is so flashy.

The ornate Lotus Flower Tiara was also designed by Garrard London in the 1920s of pearls and diamonds. It was a reworked wedding gift for the Queen Mother, who had a necklace dismantled and rearranged into this tiara form. She then passed it down to her daughter Princess Margaret, who wore it often and lent it to her daughter-in-law for her own wedding before it returned to the royal family vault, presumably around the time of her death in 2002. More recently, the Duchess of Cambridge has put it on display for occasions of state, including a 2013 ball and a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2015 for a Buckingham Palace banquet. It’s distinguished by the delicate lotus-shaped floral motif that makes up its signature curvy shape, making it a light but regal piece.

— Ella Kay (@courtjeweller) February 10, 2018
The elaborate Strathmore Rose Tiara dates back to 1923, according to royal jewelry experts. It was originally a gift from the 14th Earl of Strathmore to his daughter Elizabeth upon the occasion of her marriage; she ultimately became Queen Mother, as her husband was crowned King George VI following their marriage. Since then, it has been worn sparingly by the royal family. But it is striking in design, featuring rose “prongs” set with rose-cut diamonds.

— Ella Kay (@courtjeweller) January 13, 2018
The Queen Mother’s Cartier Bandeau Tiara is actually comprised of a set of bracelets, some of them also fitted with rubies, emeralds, and sapphires; for the tiara, the wearer chooses three pieces, according to Town & Country. The current Queen has been known to wear some of the different bracelet components individually over the years. It would be an unusual choice for Markle, but also a sleeker option than some of the more fanciful tiaras floating around the royal vault.
Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara
Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara Imo it's one of the most beautiful tiaras. #tiara #tiaras #queenmaryfringetiara #queenmary #queenmum #queenmom #queenelizabeth2 #queenelizabeth #queenelizabethii #princessanne #hermajesty #hm #royals #godsavethequeen #british #britishmonarchy #crown #britishroyalfamily #weddingday #weddingdress #weddingstyle #royalwedding #britishwedding #4generations #fourgenerations#kolagemaidbaimi
A post shared by Royals of Europe (@royals.of.europe) on Jun 3, 2017 at 6:45am PDT
If Meghan Markle is looking to make a bold statement, Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara is bound to stand out: it features a stately series of vertical rows of diamonds. Originally owned by Queen Mary according to the Royal Collection website, she lent it to her daughter-in-law Elizabeth for her wedding day. It was crafted from a diamond necklace that Queen Victoria gave to Queen Mary for her wedding back in 1893. It remains contemporary in design: minimalist in structure, maximalist in sparkle.
Out of the running: The Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara
Dan Kitwood—Getty ImagesTheir Royal Highnesses Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge exit following their marriage at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011 in London, England.
This is the one tiara we know Meghan Markle won’t be wearing on her walk down the St. George’s Chapel aisle. The Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara, referred to as the Halo Tiara, was donned by Kate Middleton for her 2011 nuptials to Prince William at Westminster Abbey. It was a gift from the Queen Mother to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 18th birthday. But it will not be within Markle’s reach for her spring wedding, as the Queen has loaned it out to the National Gallery of Australia for a Cartier jewelry exhibition on display from March 30 through July 22.
Of course, it’s also entirely possible that Markle will choose one of the lesser-known sparklers from the extensive royal jewelry vault, transform a different piece as recent Queens have been wont to do, or even show up with a new tiara altogether. We’ll find out on May 19.

Today brings an exciting little sneak peek, with a preview of the Jared exclusive Pandora Christmas ornament for 2017! In addition to the regular Pandora porcelain bell ornament that will be offered as a gift with purchase worldwide, there will be another festive ornament offered exclusively by Jared’s stores in the US.
For those who are new to this, Pandora have a close relationship with a chain of jewellery stores called Jared’s Galleria in North America, and often run special exclusives with them. They have offered a Jared exclusive ornament for the past two years – these have become very sought after, especially the first one, as they’re available nowhere else in the world. It’s just Jared, in the US, and they don’t ship Pandora internationally.
Read on for a sneak peek at this year’s design! 🙂

Pandora Jared Exclusive Christmas Ornament 2017
Thanks to Cecy Elena, we can now see that this year’s Jared ornament is a porcelain reindeer design, with pretty curlicue detailing!
The ornament will be available from 7 December with spends of $125 USD or more. If you want this design, I advise that you don’t hesitate – as I mentioned previously, Jared exclusive ornaments usually become very hard to find! If you live outside of the US, you’ll have to get a friend to help you, as they’re not permitted to ship Pandora items abroad.
The previous two Jared designs, offered in 2015 and 2016, were a Christmas tree and a wreath:
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

My Comment
The Christmas ornament GWPs are probably my favourite promos of the year, and I’ll definitely be trying to get hold of this pretty ornament with the help of a friend in the US. I missed out the first Jared exclusive ornament, and have been kicking myself ever since! I got last year’s, which is super pretty. 🙂
What do you think of this year’s design?
Today we finally have a sneak peek at the Pandora Jared exclusive holiday ornament for 2017! :D Today brings an exciting little sneak peek, with a preview of the Jared exclusive Pandora Christmas ornament for 2017!

Please picture me sitting in the yard, weeding, when the sprinklers come on directly into my face and I bolt for the porch, scattering my pile of weeds everywhere, and then check to see if my cellphone is okay only to realize it is no longer in my pocket and is instead sitting in the middle of the lawn being helpfully watered, and so I duck back out into the sprinklers to get it and make another dash back to the porch where I run head first into a hanging birdfeeder

this is how much I identify people with their icons on here:
I was browsing the notes on a post and I scrolled up in such a way that my icon was briefly superimposed over the icon of the reply I was reading, and then, like a goldfish, I went "wait, did *I* write this reply??????"
and I had a 2 second existential crisis until my brain caught back up

The most amusing thing to me about Joey listing ‘Jonathan Taylor Thomas’ as her Celebrity Boy Crush is that that is literally the exact same thing I did.
As in, I went “hm, based on my peers and media representation of How to Teen Girl I am supposed to have a crush on a young male celebrity.”  So I looked around and picked one essentially at random (Jonathan Taylor Thomas aka "JTT" was my distant cousin’s obsession) and was like “yes, this is my Celebrity Boy Crush, am I now performing teenage girl heteronormativity correctly?”
I also acquired my Boy At School Crush in the same consciously analytical fashion.  This seemed reasonable.
Anyway, I still know LITERALLY nothing about Jonathan Taylor Thomas except he is blond and was one of the kids on the Home Improvement show?
in other news, goddamn, Joey, this girl, I love, I identify

Oh my god, let me tell you about this watch. I actually won it? See, most things, when they give graduate students awards, give them money (because they know they are poor) or maybe a plaque. But *this* award they were like "Congratulations! We're giving you a watch!" And I'm like "okay." And they're like "It's valued at $300!" And I'm like ".......okay?" Because 1) can watches actually cost that much 2) could I please have the $300, I am poor. But anyway, I got this watch, and, being an extremely stubborn sort of person, I have worn it ever since. It's been years now. This is probably the longest I've ever worn any particular watch, or even a watch at all. I am going to get my value out of this darned watch. It's *particularly* notable since I actually can't really read analog watches all that well, I super can't read them well when they don't have numbers, and also the battery has been dead for the past 7 months or so. On the plus side it does have a date function, which is probably my biggest use for watches. Also they are much more discreet to check when teaching or in a meeting. More useful when the watch doesn't always read "11:15", but there you go.
