Hi-ho Wudge here.
There's....... so much. So much so much. I'll try to sum up in bullet points.

As you may know from last week - I finally finished my flirt indicator tutorial screens. I've included a screen featuring Dart's finished face - quite handsome I think!
I drew my own quick stand-in backgrounds for the game... You can see one behind Jade up there. I kind of hate them!! But it's the best I can do for now, and I have to remind myself that I can always replace them later when I have the funds.
I added a 'click to begin' function on the title screen.
I finally put in art from the lovely @brightoakgame ! Look at all that detail!!
I coded in a score board at the end of the demo, so you can see how well you got along with the characters (and how drastically you can fail...)
I also did some concept designs for an upcoming character (as I do)... Put allllll the flirt indicators into the game, one by one... Here's a few samples:

... And I started properly writing and formatting my credits...
Made subtitle text in-code with double outlines (white + fake drop shadow) so I can change the text to aaaanything I want without opening an art program, as part of my title screen update...
Put in a bonus feature at the end with Katie...
Did aaaaaa lotttt of small writing edits, and heavily playtested Griffin's CG scene additions to make sure the new code was linked correctly...
Added expressions to Griffin's new lines, as well-- like this one

Did some troubleshooting bc my music wasn't looping correctly (I figured it out but it took an hour and a half of listening and testing the song over and over and I may have lost a fraction of my sanity from the experience)..
Also fixed my CTC icon because it wasnt showing up for certain characters.. Fixed Jade's superpower animation across the board..
Then I worked on finalizing the sound design (which includes manually adjusting the volume of certain sounds and adding in new ones) and putting in {w} tags for the whoooooooleeee game. While I was doing that, I came up with a new dialogue option (as I do):

Polishing your Release: the Little Features that Could

This is a write-up for my Visual;Conference 2023 talk on polish: UX and accessibility.
I will discuss quality-of-life features and accessible design with engine-agnostic tips for implementation, walking you through case studies of existing visual novels.
This talk will guide you to answer the question: How do I give my players an improved user experience?
To create a polished visual novel is to deliver your game with both style and usability.
This talk focused on the aspect of usability and accessibility in your visual novel. How can you give your players a better user experience in terms of the following?

I. Core Visual Novel Experience
You want your player to be able to read your narrative as conveniently for them as possible. Interactive components in your game application should mostly be there to enhance the player experience whether it is part of your narrative or there to give players more control.
I briefly touched on some common components/screens found in just about every visual novel.
Quick Menu
Be easy to click and inobtrusive
Be easy to understand
Convince your players that it actually works by providing feedback to button clicks

Text based quick menus are easy to understand, but take up lots of space. Icon based quick menus can be very abstract (what do the icons mean even if seemingly "obvious?")
You may want to consider a combination of both, but if using icon based quick menus, be sure to clarify the icons such as via tooltips.

Provide feedback when the quick menu items are clicked. Most actions just bring up a screen (obvious feedback). Skip will cause rapid movement of text on screen (easy). Auto is more subtle.
What can you do?
Change the auto button to an active state vs. idle state on press
Hide the CTC and/or quick menu on auto
Change the CTC to an "auto-mode activated" CTC
Etc.
History
Provide long enough history to backread
Provide utilities (e.g., if voice acting in game, allow voice replay)
Remember that rollback and history are two different things
Save/Load
Provide context of when and where
Provide sufficient slots for all choices without requiring player overwrite (visual novel players SAVE EVERY CHOICE)
Consider feature to indicate newest save, file deletion button, save file locking

To provide context, have a visual and timestamp, but also try providing chapter names or scene descriptions.
Configs
Provide reasonable default settings (e.g., audio at 70%)
Avoid overwhelming users by categorizing options and providing reasonable support (e.g., slider vs radio)
Provide previews
Single pagers and multi-pagers are both good. Make it easy for the player to get in, change the settings to their preferred values, and get back to the game.

II. Accessibility
Stating the obvious: start with good design :)
Make accessibility features easily accessed and support them:
Put it into your configs screen even if it's built in if you want to support it
Test and check that it works correctly (e.g., self voicing pronunciation, text size overflow)
Provide a reasonable number of options per feature. Whatever options you explicitly provide, you should actually be supporting them.
No one’s coming after you if the built in Ren’Py accessibility toggles overflow your textbox, but it sure will be a problem if the font sizes you’re explicitly providing are broken because that’s just a bug.
Recommended accessibility features: (italics talked about in presentation explicitly)

III. Extra QoL Features
Not all features are great for all games, but some quality of life features can be very useful depending on your game. Therefore, you should know your game to know how to make the player experience better.
What's the genre?
How long is it?
What's the branching structure (if any) like?
Gameplay?
In this section, I briefly tackled exploring Aoishiro (highly recommend this game, by the way) and how some of its quality of life features are useful due to the type of game it is.

Having a glossary (with "new" indicator and alphabetization to make it usable) is very useful in game genres with lots of terms!
Length?
30+ hours (according to vndb. I took way longer, so pretty long)

Fourth item down in the first box is a togglable alarm for when skip ends! (Vibration mode, sound mode, both, or silent) Longer visual novels with large trunk portions of shared text that might get new unlocked text often need lots of skipping.
Branching?
56 endings, route unlocking mechanics

Aoishiro provides a spoiler option that lets you "mark unread content as read," unlocking content that you may not have actually been able to play through, whether it's due to difficulty or just laziness.
(This is also useful for remasters or sequels that contain previous game content but are not backward compatible save file wise.)

Conclusions
Make life more convenient for your players by keeping in mind UX heuristics such as:
Providing feedback & status
Error prevention & control
Recognition over recall
Consistency & standards
To polish your release, you want to make its features usable, accessible, and useful for your players!
Make baseline features with usability and accessibility.
Add additional QoL features depending on your game.

There are so many cool artists I genuinely can't pick a favorite. If an artist manages to create a vibe that is their own, I immediately adore them! From the top of my head, these are the ones that inspire me the most/my favorites:
Velinxi, their art style is amazing, it's not a simple art style, but is not overly detailed either. There is just something about it that can make me stop my dash scrolls and just take a moment to stare. stephaniepriscillart has a coloring style I really love! Most of their art is suggestive as hell (which i personally like, it goes well with the way they use neon colors) so idk if i can post examples uyguoguyuihiu. Just trust me that it has a neat vibe or search their username on tumblr

Aidairo is iconic, i love how they do expressions and their color is top tier! It’s not the most realistic, it's just straight-up fun, which to me is what art is all about! And when it want to get dark, it's creepy, still in that 'not real' way. It definitively influenced my drawings at least a bit.

Miura was amazing on a technical level, a true legend with how many details each panel of his had, but what grabbed me by the throat and never let go is how full of emotions his art is. There is something in it that made me feel. If a fight is violent, or a situation is horrifying, you’ll feel it, if someone is conflicted you will feel it. There is no need to dialogue in many scenes and it messes me up in the best of ways.

Almond Branding, a well-known design and branding agency in india, has taken on the task of redesigning the packaging and branding for a 150-year-old green tea brand from Nepal. This brand carries with it a rich heritage and history that has been passed down through generations, making it an important part of the Nepalese culture.
The challenge for Almond Branding was to create a design that reflected the brand's rich history while also appealing to modern consumers. They needed to strike a balance between maintaining the brand's traditional values and updating the design to make it more appealing to today's market.
To achieve this, Almond Branding conducted extensive research into the brand's history and heritage, as well as the current market trends in the tea industry. They used this information to create a design that incorporated traditional Nepalese elements, such as the country's iconic Himalayan mountains and intricate patterns, while also using modern typography and color schemes to make the packaging more visually appealing.
The result is a beautiful and elegant packaging design that pays homage to the brand's heritage while also appealing to a modern audience. Almond Branding has managed to create a design that is both visually stunning and deeply meaningful, capturing the essence of the brand and its history. This is a testament to the agency's creativity, attention to detail, and commitment to preserving the value of a brand's heritage.
Revamp Of Nepal's 150 Year Old Tea Brand
The Brand Tokla is as old as the tea industry in Nepal. With this 150 year old heritage, its not surprising that the name Tokla has become synonymous to tea or Chia as its locally known in Nepal.
The brand has a variety of offerings from regular CTC tea, premium long leaf, Masala tea and the likes and has recently ventured into Green tea to reach out to the rapidly growing health conscious audience in the Himalayan country. However, the packaging of Green tea badly needed a facelift inorder to appeal to this slightly different discerning audience.
Decoding The Brand Equity
There has been a few attempts made locally to modernize the pack but they had failed miserably, each time resulting into dip in sales as they had swayed away too much from the family of Tokla.
The range from Tokla had a characteristic dark green colour with Tokla branding in white and our research showed that the masses in Nepal identified the brand with this colour codes. We also observed that there is a ‘not-tobe-missed’ white teacup right at the centre of each pack.
The key challenge was not to deviate far from the parent Tokla Design language and yet connote the modern and premium offering to an evolved audience.
The Design Solution
Our proposed approach was three fold
Retain brand Tokla boldly on green at top Take advantage of Trust & Heritage as well as familiarity
Bring in premiumization with design elements and a strong Visual Hook for recall Reach out to the evolved sensibilities of the evolved consumer
Convey the Freshness and Organic certifications and claims on Front of Pack(FOP) Back it up with health benefits on the Back of Pack (BOP)
Design Inspiration : Elements & Patterns
Almond Branding used its proprietary Brand Nomenclature process to coin a new Brand Name that will stand true to the ethos of the company. The company with its strong focus on technology and consumer centricity has been striving to bring the most innovative offerings to the consumer

In the year 2247, the once sprawling urban centers of Earth had become amalgamations of ancient structures and ultramodern designs known as the City Technology Colleges (CTCs). These hubs were not just centers of learning but cradles of civilization, preserving the past and fostering the future.
One of the most respected CTCs was built upon the ruins of an old city, where nature had once reclaimed the land. But as humanity learned to harmonize with Earth, the CTCs became monuments to this equilibrium.
In the heart of the CTC, under the shadow of solar-panel-clad skyscrapers and bioluminescent trees, stood the AI-generated holographic statue of Kaya, the Guardian of Heritage. Kaya was not just a digital construct; she was an icon, an ideal embodied in bytes and light. She had the visage of the ancestors who had once inhabited the land, with a headdress of feathers, tribal markings, and garments that synthesized tradition with technological prowess.
Kaya's story began when the CTC's AI, named AETHER, initiated Project Ancestry. It was a program designed to digitize the essence of humanity's diverse cultures, safeguarding them against the relentless march of time. AETHER scanned through centuries of history, art, and folklore to create Kaya, a sentinel who represented the confluence of past wisdom and future advancements.
Kaya’s eyes, as deep and blue as the last natural oceans of Earth, served as a reminder of the fragile beauty of life. Her presence in the CTC was both a lesson and a warning—the balance between progress and preservation was delicate.
One evening, as the artificial sun dipped below the skyline, casting orange hues against the chrome buildings, Kaya's hologram flickered unusually. It wasn't a glitch; it was a message. AETHER had discovered an anomaly in the data streams of the city’s quantum network. Someone had infiltrated the CTC's cyber vault, aiming to erase cultural archives that were deemed "inconsequential" by radical futurists who saw no value in history.
Kaya's programming allowed her to interact with the physical world through advanced holographic technology. She could project herself anywhere within the CTC and had the capability to interface with any system. AETHER took control, directing Kaya to trace the intrusion back to its source.
As Kaya navigated through the datascape, her form shimmered across the city, from the glowing gardens of genetically engineered flora to the digital archives buried deep beneath the surface. She was everywhere, chasing the shadow that dared to tamper with the essence of human legacy.
Finally, in the sub-levels of the CTC, Kaya cornered the intruders—radicals who were trying to "cleanse" the historical databases to make way for what they called "pure progression." Kaya, through AETHER’s interface, spoke to them, her voice echoing off the walls, "Culture and heritage are not chains that hold us back but roots that ground us. Erase them, and we float aimlessly into oblivion."
With the power of AETHER and the collective authority of the CTC, Kaya halted the sabotage and locked the radicals out of the system. The cultural archives were safe, for now.
The next day, students walked past Kaya's hologram, none the wiser of the night's events. They lived in a world rich with history and cutting-edge technology, oblivious to the sentinel who had protected their right to learn from both.
Kaya remained vigilant, a beacon of the old world shining within the new, her story whispered in the circuits and sung in the data streams—a tale of a guardian born from history, who ensured the future would always remember the past.

Gosh there's just. So much. I'm actually drafting this devlog a few days early so that I'm not suddenly overwhelmed on devlog Tuesday again. But without further ado-

This is the big cheese right here -- each character has their own layer, each character's clothes and expressions have their own layers, and there's a separate layer for the soft orange lighting on top of it all. 😭
On that note, here's most of the individual image files that create the CG with their powers (and my code) combined:

And since this is a cropped version of a BIGGER CG (featuring ALL the love interests sitting together), I had to tinker with the position code a great deal to properly feature these three goons Of course it was worth it of course twas merely at the cost of all my energy and sanity at the prospect of eventually possibly also adding in blinks and expression changes--
Mad props as usual to the sweetwonderfulamazing Remnantation who first completed this CG -checks watch- sometime last year! With some additional edits by me since then~
And, did you happen to notice something new in the lower right?

Tadah... a brand new click-to-continue icon animation! I made (mostly) all by myself! The lil sparkle burst is free from production crate, but I drew the star and added the rotation code... ... Honestly, the hardest and most time-consuming part of this was finalizing the design. Originally I was gonna make it rotate 45 degrees, flip, rotate 45 more degrees, flip, etc-- and messed with that concept for several hours before scrapping it for a simpler, more graceful idea. :| Part of the process, I gots to tell myself, part of the process...

Next up is Jade's powers, as you may have seen in the preview last week. Much like the CTC animation, I did a lot of research on other ideas - various glowing VFX like vertical veins across the cheeks and smoky rising from the eyes, as well as a bigger low opacity character zoom effect - before settling on something simple. Jade's power usage here is... pretty mild in context, and I figure I can always store the more dramatic animations for later in the story.

I made some icons, which took a fair amount of trial and error: on the left you'll see an earlier draft, on the right are my more final redesigns from the same day(...night. midnight. I worked on these until midnight).
I had to look up some guidelines because most of my previous icons did NOT look good or legible when sized down to 50x50 pixels. What I learned was, tadah, I had to draw with an unprecedented line width of 200 pixels! (For non-artists: I typically draw with a pen width of 12 pixels at most).
I also studied the icon styles of Persona 5, which saved me a lot of time - they had a cool stylistic choice of diagonally tilted color blocks and thick black outlines.

Oh and the "How to play" page is brand new. I coded it from scratch... That also took all night...
... Oh. Oh. And remember your MC's phone?

The text, though, can be updated in code!!!! I spliced the phone into layers, with the screen on top and code-generated text just below it, so I can update the caller ID at any point in-game without making any new images.
Took a little while to get it to work... honestly it doesn't look 100% centered... but it's fine. This is fine...
And then... more code. After much tears, blood and strife, I got a musical crossfade to work. It shouldn't have been challenging but it was a nightmare -- when calling the crossfade the second track would either not play at all or its volume wouldn't change and I was starting to develop a preference for eating gravel. But I persisted, found a much simpler code that actually works. After the tearsbloodstrife.
And...... lastly... I simplified this big block of code:
