I think that mermaid!Eleven and sailor!Lucas met first. They wouldn’t even start friendship or anything, but they just met, maybe even talk and then swim their ways.

That would happen at night. Lucas wouldn’t be able to sleep, so he would go on board and look at the ocean. And that was when he saw her. She was pretty but she didn’t look like human. At least no like human who was out in the ocean without a boat.

El, on the other hand, just was curious. She always liked to look at people’s ships at night, when sailors were usually asleep and she could just look and imagine how their lives looks like.

They would look at each other, Lucas would be surprised, El scared and she would want to swim away, but then Lucas would say something dumb like “aren’t you cold down there?” and she would stop because, she didn’t expect that at all, and just answer him and that’s how their discussion would start.

When the sun began to rise, they parted, saying a simple "bye".

Fisher’s daughter and sailor!Lucas would be childhood best friends. Sailor would always bring his friend some souvenirs from his journeys and they would just be each other soulmates.

It has been weird for a while, when Max’s father suggest Lucas taking his daughter as a wife. It’s not that they didn’t love each other. They did, dearly. They even dated as older teenagers but they always felt like something was off. As if, they forget about someone. That was weird and not fulfilling, and so, they decided to broke up. They have been searching for that something/someone since that day.

Fishman’s daughter and mermaid met in a quite depressing moment. Max met her, a real mermaid, when the beautiful creature was fighting for her life, for her freedom. Because she actually wasn’t in the ocean but in someone’s barrel. El somehow throw away lid just when Max was walking next to it.

They look at each other, what feels like minutes but it was only seconds.

And then Max kicked the barrel, so it falls and the mermaid falls into the ocean again.

When finally safe in a water, El blew Max a kiss, like mermaids usually do with people they cherish, and she dived into the deep waters thinking about her human saver with firelike hair and blushing cheeks.

Next time they meet, it’s three of them.

Mermaid laying on the big rock in the ocean, near the land, and Lucas with Max walking through the ocean line on the sand.

And at that moment when the two of them saw the mermaid, when they were at one place at one time, when the three of them were so close to each other...It was when Max and Lucas finally felt as if their missing piece fall back into place. It was someone that they were looking for.

El, on the other hand, never felt such a pure need to have legs as right now. She couldn’t do anything beside waiting for them and hoping that they would come closer to her. Mermaid felt like it was the moment she was waiting for. The thing for whom she was floating to the surface that often. Because something was always pulling her towards it.

It was them.

It didn’t work when it was only two of them.

But now, it would.
