this deep into winter, this late at night, roads start to feel like veins and every star becomes a mouth. you see teeth in the trees, jagged and yawning. 

you pray it’s just a trick of the light, that the walls of forest surrounding you aren’t really shuffling tighter to your car. that the slow drip of panic drowning your lungs is just the product of too much coffee and too little sleep, not the instinctual thrashing of the cornered animal living deep in your blood. 

it’s only when you hear the branches start glancing off your windows, when you see the trunks clipping your side mirrors, that you begin to scream.
