Creatonotos Gangis
From the erebidae family. They have a wingspan of 4 cm. They can be found in South East Asia and parts of Australia. This moth went viral online because of a video posted in 2018 that depicted a male of this species, such as seen in the second picture. The tentacle-like appendages are called hair-pencils or coremata. They’re pheromone signaling structures used to attract mates.

Imagine chilling in Australia, watching some moths, and some hot moth babes fly into your area and one of the moths you're watching sprouts tentacles.
The anatomy of these oddly affrighting Insects!!!
You see those tentacles? those are actually their coremata (also called hair-pencils), which on most male lepidoptera are straight, stick-like appendages of which they only have one of. Except for these guys for some reason. They're special and have four wriggly corematas (or whatever the plural is). The coremata is used to secrete pheromones, pyrrolizidine alkaloid, specifically, in order to attract a mate.
Do the hairs on their tentacles count as pubic hair???
They have a wingspan of 4 cm (1.5 inches).
While their abdomen is usually red, they may occasionally have a yellow abdomen.
Their larvae are brown and very hairy, with a yellow stripe along their back.
Like every other part of their body in both larval and adult stages, their cocoons are very hairy.
The females abdomen isn't as large or inflated as the males.
Diet.
The larvae eat groundnuts, rice, finger millets, sorghum, pearl millets, coffee, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, and alfalfa. These are all plants that have pyrrolizidine alkaloid in them. This is how they're able to release their pheromones. Meaning that if they don't eat enough as a larva, their coremata won't even grow to a size large enough to secrete pheromones.
While the adults don't eat very often, they do occasionally drink the sap from their host plants. Especially if they didn't eat enough as a larvae.
Behavior.
The pheromone that the males produce can only attract female moths, whereas male moths find it repulsive and will try to fly away from it.
If a female is attracted by the males pheromones, they will wiggle their abdomen at them, signaling that they want to mate.

When they eat enough of a host plant, but not enough to kill it, the plant will release a poisonous amount of pyrrolizidine alkaloid, which tends to kill any farm animals that eat these plants.
Habitat.
Unsurprisingly, they are found in Australia. And Southeastern Asia, which also has some bizarre insects in it, but doesn't quite have the same reputation as Australia. They can also be found in Japan, China, and Papua new guinea.
The larvae are born on and live on their host plants.
The adults tend to hang around their host plants in case they ever need any food.
Cool fact that didn't fit here.
While trying to study their coremata due to it's abnormal shape, scientists realized the difficulty in trying to study coremata, and invented a machine to inflate the coremata on dead specimens. and they called it the Phalloblaster 😭😭.

Creatonotos gangis is a species of arctiine moth in South East Asia and Australia.
The appendages you see below its abdomen are actually to release pheromones. They can be withdrawn back into their abdomen and exerted back out entirely.

the premise of the new au because i simply cannot help myself
takes place mullet stan, paranoid ford era
not too long after ford sends the postcard, bill steals his body and traps him in the mindscape. his ethereal form is altered due to nightmare realm shenanigans, and he ends up looking like a lanky shadow figure with static-y/blurred edges. the most distinguishing part of his appearance is the addition of an emperor moth with spread wings over his face which acts as his eyes, as well as several species of moths that trail him around (these include cecropia moths, Creatonotos gangis, luna moths, and death's-head hawkmoths)
eventually, stan arrives and, one, is not exactly pleased about going into a seemingly empty dark house filled with bugs, and two, is especially not pleased at the revelation that oh that's my brother isn't it. oh i'm the only one who can see him aren't i
after figuring out what's happened, stan sets out to try and find ford's stolen body. unfortunately, he has exactly zero leads and comes up with nothing. he spends a little while cleaning up the house (minus the moths) before ford and him come to the conclusion that they're gonna have do this bill-style
as in stan allows ford to possess him to actually get the investigative work going. this comes with an interesting system- an emperor moth is always either perched on or hovering around stan at all times. when ford's possessing him, the moth covers both of his eyes. if the moth is only covering one eye, it means that they are using the power of ✨ teamwork ✨
this does come with the unfortunate side effect of people staring at stan whenever he goes into town, but that's fine, they're both used to that sort of thing by now

recently learned about the Creatonotos Gangis moth. what is up with those tentacles?
They're called coremata, inflatable glands that release mating pheromones! When not in use, they collapse down and are retracted into the abdomen. A lot of articles report on the viral photos knowing none of this and just dramatize that there are "FLYING TENTACLE INSECTS"....I don't think they fly or even walk around with them out, they just find a place to perch and let the pheromones carry on the wind a while :)
Creatonotos and related species have the very largest coremata in proportion to their body, but other moths have them in various shapes and sizes
