So I finally got my life together enough to continue my C3 watch... I'm still at 33, I've made more progress on C1 recently. Finally the combination of finding Mini Metro and actually logging onto Tumblr on the web made the barrier of watching Those Episodes bearable.
Spoilers for ep 33 and minor vibe spoilers for episodes in the future that I'm not sure of but its all stuff I absorbed via osmosis and fandom.
It's been almost a full year since these episodes came out and I was mindlessly scrolling Tumblr during my 10am linguistics lecture and stumbled upon everyone panicking because of the lack of diamonds for the amount of people who died. Anyway.
The anxiety of not quite remembering exactly I learned happened is not doing me any favors, but good god, I can really only handle some of this stuff not watching live.
Anyway, here are some assorted thoughts:
Liam you really did not have to make me Feel Things about Orym and his husband while Orym is passing out.
Laudna what is that spell that adds hit dice, that is So Good
Good GOD Otohan is not pulling any punches.
.....this is so close to TPK wow.....
Matt hesitating before essentially killing his wife's character, but doing it anyway.....
It's really interesting to see so many of them up and huddled around the map, things are really getting heated, with Liam just living behind Ashley and Laura's chairs.
"I don't want to be the only one not dead" followed immediately by "soometiiimees you gotta cut a bitch" Yes Travis, that is the correct energy to bring to this clusterfuck.
:OOOOO Not the natural 20 to fucking save Laudna
Begging the DM for the extra hit point like its gonna matter lmao
"I should be more complete at my job" Good GOD
The sending stone 😢
And there's the first one
"We've met before" 😒😒
The sense of failure, the bitersweet feeling of seeing Will and Derrik again 😢😢
I hate it for them that they are getting important lore while they are on the verge of a TPK and loosing their characters
and yet they make jokes like "we can't afford that Sam" to careless whisper
"He is not a creature at the moment" :O omg. Ow. God that hurts.
I gotta say, I'm really enjoying seeing all these hail mary type moves.
You really only see the uber creative dumb shit Hail Mary calls when things are extremely dire.
I love how Beau's voice and mannerisms sneak out a lot as bits and jokes
And there's the second
"That was a helluva run" 😢
"Embrace it or be culled like the rest" oh my god
"That brings us straight to your initiative because everyone else ahead of you is dead" Oh my god Matt
If this actually tpk'd, this would probably be in the running for the longest, most painful tpk. Usually its all at once, rocks fall, everyone dies, the dragon breath attack....
Something about Travis repeating "do you fight it" to laura is so sweet to me.
Also Imogen is making such a wild decision mid potentially worst day of her life omg.
"Save your last line, you might still have a chance" Damn Matt you didn't have to be Like That
"I give in, and I fuck Chetney" "We all do at some point" 🤣
"Is she your favorite" and the immediate "I'll go with you, I give in" oh my god. Having seen that clip of Laura being like 'I didn't know Imogen was in love with Laudna' oh my god the pining is there.
Oh shit the whole city is turning red.
And THATS the end..................
I was gonna go to bed but........ Maybe I can afford to make 1 poor decision
I love the friendship, everyone congratulating each other and matt, no hard feelings. But I wonder how many people are rolling up characters just in case cuz oh my god.

back in the summer of 2018, while watching critical role live, i decided to call it a night and go to sleep early rather than continue watching: i could just check tumblr in the morning.
i woke up to a favourite PC dead!
and, i made the decision to make my best effort to watch the show live. just in case.
so last night, when i decided to just have an early night because “nothing that big was happening”…
i really should have seen it coming.

Ok so lets lay everything out.
spoilers ahead people...
Ashton, Laudna, Fearne, Orym all went down at some point.
Chetney is up and in wolf form but probably not looking good.
Fearne and Orym are past saving throws.
Laudna has 2 failed saves and Otohan standing over her.
FCG has at least one lv 3 spell slots and I THINK 2 diamonds.
Ashton is booking it, I think he’s most likely given up.
Imogen just used up most if not all her spells trying to stop Otohan, but also just released her powers (???), turned the dust storm red and then everything went white.
The fact that Matt described that the building got torn down and people were pushed around I don’t think people are where there minis were last placed.
....What does this all mean? I have no FUCKING clue. For me this is the biggest “trust the process” moment I feel I have ever had with Cr. Four people up, one of them running away, with 3 party members dead/on there way there. I don’t think this will be a TPK, but I also don’t think everyone is walking away from this one.
I really don’t know how to end this other then.... Is it thursday yet?

So I haven’t seen the episode but I know what happens in it and I can’t bring myself to watch it.
Like I know deep down that no matter what everything is going to be okay, the story will still be amazing and our friends at Critical Role will continue to be incredible by sharing their stories, talents, snd friendship with us. But I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t be devastated if this is truly as bad as it seems.
This particular arc and all the characters relationships have been actually really helpful in coping with my personal life through a particularly shitty time.
So like they’re all incredible but also ouuuuch.

Having finally watched the combat of CR3 Ep.33 for myself and being made aware of the outcome of it because diddly dang spoilers got me, I’ve got some Thoughts.
First off, I disagree that the combat was mechanically unfair, with the predisposed knowledge that it was a combat that The Bells Hells weren’t ever outright going to “win” (aka kill Otahan) I Matt making Otahan too difficult to kill within a few rounds of combat (by my count combat went ~5 or 6 rounds) makes a lot of sense.
Secondly, I don’t think it was narratively poorly designed or Matt or the players did anything necessarily “wrong,” just that sometimes good/proper roleplay leads to unfortunate outcomes. Looking at it from Otahan’s point of view, this group is fleeing her stronghold with stolen property and then also has Imogen, who she has some connection to in it. They (Imogen) initiated hostilities and she retaliated.
Imo, if the group had actually attempted to flea, like Imogen did, they would’ve left unconscious team members behind *but* I also think, knowing Matt and his penchant for Smart Evil NPC’s, Otahan would’ve stabilized them and held them hostage for Imogen.
I also think that if Imogen wasn’t totally out of line of sight for the first two or three rounds of combat the idea that Imogen could “give in” to the storm would’ve become more apparent sooner and also could’ve ended sooner if she had used her action to give in as opposed to continuing to go on the offensive against Otahan.
All of that said, I don’t think anybody did anything “wrong,” they just did what their characters would do...even if they weren’t the most mechanically “correct” choices...and...well, sometimes the reward for good role play is angst.
My final thoughts on the matter, now that I know the life/death outcomes of the fight, are; I’m interested to see how this encounter with Otahan and the letting in of ‘the storm’ impacts Imogen and the party dynamics going forward. I’m also interested to see if death changes Fearne at all (I know it’s going to change Orym because That’s The Way Liam Is [and I love him for it]).
As to Laudna, my only genuine hope is they don’t bamf Keyleth or Pike via Keyleth in for a high level resurrection ritual, because IMO if they can just call on a demi-god’s favor (and level 20 characters are essentially demi-gods) to bring people back whenever that absolutely robs the narrative of its stakes and brings in the gaping plot hole of “if Keyleth or Pike, or any of Vox Machina, Full Ass Level 20 Good Heroes, are available to help what do we even need this low/mid level party of chuckle fucks with at least one potentially evil character for?”
I’d love to hear what other people think, though!

Matt and the Players absolutely had to have a conversation about if it was was ok to kill them, especially after Molly. I believe that Matt only ever killed PCs if the player was ok with it. And he absolutely did this after Molly and especially for this campaign. The stakes have never been higher for a party this level, this is absolutely intended by everyone involved to be a very intense and difficult campaign. Bertrand set that precedent right off the bat.
And I think that true resurrection on them will be held as a bargaining chip by the bad guys aswell. I will hold in mind the possibility of a true resurrection up untill the point that the players bring a new character to the table.

I know laudna isn't dead yet, she does have 2 death saves and I sword inside of her last I checked, but honestly, out of her, ferne, abd orym, if I had to choose one to die it would be her.
She's by far my favorite member of the bells hells, but yeah I would choose her. For one reason. And that's because if anyone in the party was going to get the lucien treatment it would be her. (Followed by maybe imogen, fcg, and Ashton in that order for me)
Laudna has the most ties to campaign 1 other than orym, she has delilah broke the world for us briarwood in her head even if she was to die this wouldnt be the end of her story. Orym and ferne feel like there's a story for them to tell and room to grow but it also feels like if they go that's it for their story to me. Laudna is the same, but she's already a walking corpse, a "survivor" of whitestone, with a necromancer in her head, if she dies, I think we will see her again.
I do want to be clear losing laudna would devastate me, it just I can't see her being gone for good, even if we don't see her until campaign 4 or a oneshot

Post CR3 Episode 33 Thoughts: Otohan's Plan
Otohan clear had a goal in mind when killing the Bells Hells. To awaken Imogen. There's a reason she saved Laudna for last, because she knew that Laudna was special to Imogen. Otohan wanted the storm that has always been inside of Imogen to finally consume her, so Imogen could become "one of the strongest."
It was never personal, just a means to an end. I believe even if the Bells had forgotten about Trenshi and had just gone to Yios, the same thing would have happened. Otohan would have just used the Call to stage an attack on a large amount of unawakened Ruidusborn, culling the weak and taking the strongest that survived.
Otohan's building an army. An army of Ruidusborn. She killed Fearne, even though she had the 'seed', because Fearne was nowhere near being awakened, Otohan doesn't have time for that. They're a month out from the Apogee Solstice, she needs her army made of the strongest of them, to aid in the escape. To release the long forgotten Gods, Rau'shan and Ka'Mort ,imprisoned on Ruidus, to make them known to the world.
They're gonna bring Calamity. And this time, they'll win.

okay wait, someone please correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think tomorrow’s episode is going to start with immediate death saving throws and healing.
the battle isn’t over and imogen just started to wreck the buildings around her in a red storm so doesn’t she pose a threat to those unconscious (or conscious) still on the ground? isn’t there a chance that SHES the one who kills laudna simply because laudna is in the line of red storm fire?
i could totally be wrong and personally i’d like to be wrong so if anyone could clear up whether or not that last bit of the episode was just flair on matt’s end i would be forever greatful.
