Sure! Here’s a few:

- Difficulty sleeping / sleeping too much / excessive tiredness

- Not being as ‘sharp’ in conversation

- Glassy eyes/bloodshot eyes

- Stomach pain

- Aching joints

- Loss of appetite

- Sinus pressure

- Chills/hot flushes

- Dizziness

- Shortness of breath

- Confusion

- More emotional

- Dry, chapped, sore skin around nose and lips.

CYOA Whump - Part 11

First | Previous

You chose: Yes! Father didn’t raise a quitter.

You're exhausted but you choose to push yourself even harder, squeezing your eyes closed. Controlling the winds is your birthright. You shouldn't have to struggle for it.

You can feel your whole body trembling. The pain has spread from your head through the rest of your body, a sensation like being prodded with thousands of needles. Under the roaring of wind you can hear yourself crying out.

"This has to stop, captain! He can't-"

"Silence, boy."

"But he-"

"I said shut it!"

You can't get enough air. It's like your magic is pulling the very breath from your lungs. You gasp and cough, the metalic taste getting stronger as you spit out blood.

Rough hands grab your face, tilting your head back. "Kid? Open your eyes."

You can't. Your eyelids are too heavy. An open palm slaps you across the cheek and even that doesn't bring you any closer to awareness.

"Alright. You're done. Stop it."

You can't do that either. You've opened the dam that holds your magic at bay too wide and you don't have the energy to close it again. You can feel your life force draining away...

When you wake up it's in small waves of realization. First, you're horizontal, not tied sitting up like you have been so far. There's a thin mattress under you and a blanket covering you. Your hands are cuffed together and resting on your stomach.

You pry your eyes open. The room is small and dark except for the soft orange light of a lantern. Sitting at your bedside is Onthyes.

He looks up, smiling when he sees you awake. "Thank the gods. I wasn't sure if you've make it. You've been out for a whole day and night."

You groan, your throat painfully dry.

"Here." Onthyes helps you sit up, and a clinking sound catches your attention. There's a length chain attached to your cuffs that reaches out and connects to a similar cuff around Onthyes's left wrist.

He holds a cup of water to your lips, letting you drink your fill before he gives you some bread and jerky. You're able to feed yourself with your bound hands, but the chain connecting you and Onthyes serves as a constant distraction.

"Why are we chained together?" you ask when you're finished eating.

"Captain doesn't want you unsupervised for even a second now that you aren't tied up. And he said I'd discourage any escape attempts, since my body would be too heavy for you to lug around if you decide to kill me."

You raise an eyebrow at him. "I could cut off your hand."

Onthyes winces. "Please don't do that."

You hum, not making any promises. You're not even sure you're capable of doing something like that, but he doesn't need to know that.

Shen Wei's Learning Power

Am I missing something, or is Shen Wei the only Dixingren we see who coughs up blood when he overextends himself? like, I'm fine with it as a trope, its a good hurt/comfort vibe, but are we supposed to assume that's normal for Dixingren? Because I've got a theory.

Shen Wei seems to think its normal. We as the audience assume it's normal (if alarming) because he treats it as such. It is a normal consequence of using too much dark energy. A sign he has nothing left to give and tried to keep going. But I don't remember anyone else to compare that to. We do see Ye Zun have terrible coughing fits when he's young, that don't seem to plague him as an adult. After his power came in. Maybe it's not normal, but Shen Wei doesn't know because he didn't use his power extensively until the war. And he was Hei Pao Shi by then, more symbol than man, and Hei Pao Shi can't show weakness. So he hides the episodes away, thinking it's something other people just have a better handle on (he definitely has self-esteem issues), or that normal people don't use their gifts to the same extent he does (Very Likely), or maybe it just doesn't happen the same way until he's in the modern day and his powers are bound by the treaty (a distinct possibility, I don't remember much blood coughing in Ye Old Haixing).

So, what if Shen Wei's abilities involve some sort of passive dark energy absorption that buffers his health, but when he doesn't have enough dark energy, his health is similar to his brother's before Ye Zun's own power was able to compensate.

And, I don't remember if Shen Wei's difficulties with technology are a 'actually from 10k years ago' thing or a 'my powers make tech do weird things' thing, but I like the idea that his powers cause problems with complex circuitry if he's in close proximity for too long. And the handwavy magic explanation I'm going with is that his own dark energy passively maps energy patterns around him. Which does bad things to technology over a period of time. So if he carries around a phone or laptop for too long it will fry, but he can borrow a phone and use a desktop occasionally and not be a walking EMP. I'm not sure we see him wear a watch either.

TLDR: Shen Wei's learning ability involves mapping energy patterns around him and passively absorbing dark energy. So he fries technology if he's too close to it for extended periods of time, but he could borrow a phone or use a desktop as long as he doesn't do it often. It also could be buffing his health, and he cough's up blood when he doesn't have enough energy left to not do that.

Anon Asked: Any prompts for a character who suffers from TB (tuberculosis) and as a result, has a tendency to cough up blood?

Sure:

(Also please don’t quote me on my medical knowledge, I’m using multiple sources for this - listed at the end)

The coughing starts gradually, passed off as allergies/a cold.

As always, it gets worse, and harsher. They start coughing up phlegm.

Their chest hurts, as it would. They can hardly sleep and their fever starts affecting everyday life. Their throat always hurts so they hardly eat.

The weight loss and tiredness is when people start to notice.

Maybe they become more agitated - maybe they make mistakes at work.

Then the blood starts. Just a little in their phlegm at first, but it gradually becomes more than they can just wipe away with a tissue. The metallic taste makes them gag.

At this point, the blood vessels in their lungs have become eroded, and have begun to bleed.

Or they’ve aggravated their throat so much, they’ve caused minor damage.

Either way, its going into their lungs and causing breathing difficulty.

And permanent lung damage is no good for anyone, especially with residual scarring - perhaps leading to ‘pulmonary fibrosis’ which leads to many complications.

But then theres the breathlessness/passing out/gagging on blood/chest pain etc
