"In short: Nine million Canadian women of reproductive age will have the full cost of their contraception covered as part of a major health care reform, the government says.
The reform includes the most widely used contraceptive methods, such as IUDs, contraceptive pills, hormonal implants and the day after pill.
What's next? The government must still win the approval of Canada's provinces, which administer health care."
"Canada will cover the full cost of contraception for women, the government says as it highlights the first part of a major health care reform.
The government will pay for the most widely used contraceptive methods, such as IUDs, contraceptive pills, hormonal implants or the day after pill, for the nine million Canadian women of reproductive age, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Sunday at a press conference in a pharmacy in Toronto.
"Women should be free to choose the contraceptives they need without cost getting in the way. So, we're making contraceptives free," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on X, formerly Twitter.
The announcement fleshes out the first part of a bill unveiled in February that, once completed, would mark the biggest expansion of Canada's publicly funded health care system in decades.
This new regime will also cover the cost of diabetes medication for some 3.7 million Canadians.
The cost of the new system and timing of the launch have not been announced...
The government must now win the approval of Canada's provinces, which actually administer health care, for this new system. Alberta and Quebec have already said they would opt out.
The pharmacare plan — as it is called locally — follows protracted negotiations between Mr Trudeau's Liberal minority government and a small leftist faction in parliament.
The New Democratic Party agreed to prop up the Liberals until the fall of 2025, on the condition that the government immediately launch the drug program."

Africa has the world's highest unmet need for contraception, which affects sexually active, fertile women who want to delay or avoid pregnancy but lack access to contraception. This affects more than 20% of women in several countries in West, East and Central Africa.

"The Food and Drug Administration got one step closer to making birth control pills available over the counter when a panel of experts voted unanimously to recommend the move last week. At a time of increasingly fraught access to reproductive health care, being able to get birth control without a prescription would make it easier for people to plan and prevent pregnancies nationwide.
But Democratic lawmakers want to make it even more accessible, ensuring that health insurers provide no-cost coverage of oral contraceptives by passing the Affordability Is Access Act.
The FDA is set to announce its decision on whether to reclassify the drug this summer."

Middle- and upper-class families were using contraception from the 1920s to control the size of their families but fear of working-class women's sexuality meant that it would not be until 1930 that the Ministry of Health allowed publicly funded nurses and doctors to give contraceptive advice to poor married women and then only on medical grounds.

Louisiana already has trigger laws to ban abortion statewide should Roe v. Wade be overturned. HB813 looks to take things a step further to classify a person as the moment an egg is fertilized. It would provide the unborn fetus the same protections as someone who has been born and classify abortion as murder.
[...]
Some fear this could lead to charges against women for homicide or battery in cases of miscarriage or in fertility treatments like IVF. In IVF treatments an egg is taken from the woman and fertilized by doctors. Then the egg is placed back into the uterus in hopes to begin a pregnancy. One attorney shared her struggle with the first fertilized egg not taking and not becoming a valid pregnancy.
“This bill would give those cells personhood. Such that anything that happens to them after could give rise to criminal prosecution. This criminalizes IVF,” said Sarah Omojola, a New Orleans attorney.
[..]
Some also said the bill could have repercussions for use of birth control since it slows down ovulation to prevent fertilization or the bill could prevent women from getting life-saving care if it jeopardizes a fetus.

Reminder that the He Gets Us is a foundation that is intimately tied to anti-lgbtq and anti-abortion (including anti-contraceptives) groups. They aren't your friends no matter what their ads say.

What is OTC birth control and what does the approval mean? 0:
On the ground level, this means that now there is an infinitely more accessible, and less invasive, means of obtaining hormonal birth control for AFaB's in the US!
The BC that was approved is a generic of the mini-pill and simply uses only Progestin. It is the easiest one to manage. It is expected to be in stores in early 2024 - so, soon!!! We all benefit greatly from this in a lot of ways.
This is a very positive move during a time where reproductive rights are actively under fire. The FDA is giving the OK for anyone of reproductive age to obtain, which is huge, because teenagers can keep themselves safe without interference, or even test it out to see if it is the right option for them before seeking expensive medical advice. Historically, the risk of unintended pregnancies goes down dramatically when Hormonal BC is widely available.
My dad grilled me and judged me hard when I asked my mom about birth control around age 12/13. It made me feel disgusting, like I was doing something wrong, and I cried when he sternly asked if I was planning on having sex. I was seeking the pill because I had been experiencing menorrhagia since the age of 9, lol. I know that my experience is not universal, but there are more people out there who have absolutely been shamed for seeking hormonal BC, or even, shamed out of obtaining hormonal BC by their family. Doctors also have the capacity to inappropriately practice bias against allowing patients to obtain birth control, like when I faced heavy resistance from my first OB/GYN.
I am excited to see a brighter future for young people seeking reproductive care early enough in life to understand it, and take steps to use these tools to mitigate a diverse array of health and safety risks that often arise for them. Birth Control can prevent and manage a lot more conditions than just an unwanted pregnancy, after all!
