The Super League is a rather complex topic, so I'm gonna give you a short summary and a longer version with the history and stuff under the cut.

In short, the Super League is a proposed football competition for football clubs in Europe that is aimed to rival the UEFA competitions, such as the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

Format (this is the new version they just released):

It would include 64 men’s (spread across three leagues) and 32 women’s teams (spread across two leagues) playing midweek games in a league system across Europe. All clubs would play in groups of 8 – home and away – resulting in a guaranteed minimum of 14 matches per year. At the end of the season, a knockout stage of 8 clubs will be played in each league to determine the league champions. There would also be annual promotion and relegation between the three/ two leagues. The idea is that it would not interfere with domestic leagues.

History:

Proposals of Super Leagues in European football have been around for decades with the earliest ideas dating back to 1968. There were attempts to create a 'Super League' in 1987 and 1990 but they were abandoned after UEFA and FIFA threatened to sanction all involved clubs. In 2009, Florentino Pérez (president of Real Madrid) began planning a 'Super League' because the Champions League, in his words, was too "obsolete and problematic for the quality of the sport and an obstacle preventing clubs from growing their businesses and developing infrastructure." That idea resurfaced in 2020 when big clubs started suffering financially from the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing debts. That got American investors interested who pledged US $5 billion towards its formation. In January 2021, FIFA and all six football's continental confederations (AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC, and UEFA) issued a statement that rejected the formation of any breakaway European Super League and that they would ban any club or player involved from any competitions organised by FIFA and its six confederations.

Current 'European Super League':

In April 2021, Pérez announced the formation of the 'European Super League' (ESL) via a press release signed by twelve clubs that signed up to be involved (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspurs, Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan, Atlético Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Real Madrid). The aim was a new competition that "provides higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid, provides significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments, which will grow in line with league revenues, would appeal to a new younger generation of football fans, and also would improve VAR and refereeing." Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Juventus were the three leading clubs. There is much more to the financial aspect of it (like solidarity payments, welcome bonuses, participation payments, commercial revenue, etc.), but that's rather complicated and depends on what newspaper you wanna believe.

Reception:

The announcement led to a joint statement from the governing bodies of the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A condemning the formation, with all governing bodies declaring to prevent the ESL from proceeding any further. Football governing bodies from Germany, France and Russia released similar statements. UEFA reiterated their statements made in January 2021, warning that any clubs involved in the Super League would be banned from all other domestic, European and world football competitions and that players from the clubs involved would also be banned from representing their national teams in international matches. (The Premier League and their governing body FA ruled out barring the six clubs from domestic competitions and preferred to not take legal action.) Numerous politicians expressed their opposition to the proposal of the ESL. Amongst commentators, footballers and managers, the ESL sparked contrasting opinions. Media companies were mostly opposed to the idea (which does not come as a surprise as ESL promises free viewing of all live matches). Many football fans, including the fans of the involved clubs, were not in support of the idea of the ESL. The backlash led to nine clubs (all clubs, except FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus) announcing their intention to withdraw from the project in April 2023. However, eight of these nine clubs remained involved as stakeholders. In June 2023, Juventus announced their decision to leave the Super League project after facing a rumoured 5-year ban from all European competitions if they went through with the project. (That only leaves FC Barcelona and Real Madrid)

Legal issues:

In May 2021, the Super League filed a complaint to the Court of Justice of the European Union against UEFA and FIFA for their proposals to stop the competition. UEFA had opened disciplinary proceedings against FC Barcelona, Juventus, and Real Madrid, which were threatened to be excluded from all UEFA competitions, in order to sanction them but these measures were stayed until further notice as a result of the rulings from the Spanish commercial court and Swiss authorities. In June 2021, the Swiss Department of Justice and Police and the Spanish Commercial Court referred the issue to the Court of Justice of the European Union to question whether UEFA and FIFA have violated two articles of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union. Article 101 prohibits cartels and other agreements that could disrupt free competition in the EEA and Article 102 aims to prevent businesses in an industry from abusing their position or taking action to prevent new businesses from gaining a foothold in the industry. On 21 December 2023, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that FIFA and UEFA's rules, which banned clubs from joining rival competitions, such as the Super League, are contrary to EU law. UEFA's and FIFA's rules making new football projects subject to their prior approval are also unlawful.

What does the ECJ's ruling mean:

The ECJ's ruling is binding and not subject to appeal. The ECJ's decision on UEFA's rules does however not rule on whether the Super League should (or is allowed) to exist. UEFA needs to change and clarify its rules now to comply with EU law. Once the regulations are updated, the Super League will still need to acquire authorisation to set the competition up. The ruling basically gives companies like A22 the right to pitch a new football competition and for their application to be judged on criteria which are "transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate".

Revival of the project:

In December 2023, A22 announced a new, updated proposal (which I already explained under format). However, many clubs have issued statements opposing the idea (including clubs, who were once involved in the ESL). As of right now, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and SSC Napoli have issued statements in support of the ESL. There are reports about various clubs from Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and other European leagues who are keen on joining (but no official statements from the clubs).

Why could Barça and Real Madrid receive €1 billion?

I believe this has not been confirmed by A22, but it has been reported by various newspapers. They would receive €1 billion as a reward for their loyalty, as they are the only two clubs who remained firm on their decision to take part in the Super League. That would obviously only happen if they find enough teams to set up the ESL.

SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. Donc, le film Donjons et dragons : l'honneur des voleurs, est un film réalisé par J.F. Daley et J. Goldstein qui ont déjà travaillés ensemble sur deux autres films. Ils ont également (et surtout) bossés en tant que scénaristes, acteurs ou producteurs.

Mais D&D késékesé ?

A la base c'est un jeu de rôle papier, c'est à dire un jeu de société où des joueurs interprètent des personnages au cours d'une histoire qu'ils coconstruisent avec celui qui la racompte, le maitre du jeu.

Vous avez joué au jeu du loup garou de Tiercelieu ? Techniquement c'est un jdr.

Et on va pas se mentir les jdr auxquels vous pouviez jouer à la fin des années 90/début 2000 quand vous etiez au lycée c'était beaucoup D&D parce que c'était le plus populaire / le seul survivant à une époque où les jdr tombaient complètement dans l'oublie.

Mais les rolistes de l'époque c'était pas des ados boutonneux aux cheveux gras avec des posters dark fantasy au dessus du lit et qui pouvaient pas faire deux mètres sans Ventoline ? Si. Tout à fait.

Clairement si vous voulez être dans la bande des gens à part (rappelez vous à l'époque le mec cool c'était le fort en sport) le jdr c'était un moyen parfait, et si vous vouliez vraiment parler à personne vous n'aviez qu'à amener un jeux de carte à collectionner (Magic, pokemon, as you wish).

Alors des filles il y en avait, on va pas faire semblant, mais on va pas mentir non plus on était pas très nombreuses.

Et globalement le jdr c'est fantastique. C'est une liberté totale qui est pas simple à expliquer, c'est des nuits blanches pizza / jus de fruits en rigolant, c'est vivre des aventures en restant bien cachée derrière sa fiche de perso de demi-elfe magicienne aux cheveux verts.

Mais aujourd'hui ce n'est plus hier !

Aujourd'hui tout ce qui était culture de niche (bd, film de super hero, marvel, harry potter, toussa) est juste devenu la pop culture, et depuis quelques années le jdr est revenu en flèche avec le retour des jeux de sociétés pour des publics plus adultes.

Du coup, D&D le film ?

Alors déjà il faut savoir que c'est le 4eme film D&D, mais clairement si vous n'avez pas vu les 3 premiers ce n'est pas grave, du tout. Ou alors soyez bourrés.

Bon ok mais du coup D&D le film ?

Alors déjà qu'est ce que j'en attendais de ce film ?

Franchement à la base rien du tout. La bande annonce faisait très "gardien de la galaxie au moyen Age" et ça m'agaçait.

Parce que ce que j'aurais souhaité c'est un seigneur des anneaux, un film qui me respecte, qui ne cherche pas à faire prout prout pour me faire rire et qui fait semblant de restpecter un peu son matériel de base et son public.

Sauf que !

Sauf que la bande annonce imagine ce que le public aime, et la bande annonce à imaginé que le public était con et n'aimait pas être respecté et ne réclamait qu'un film rigolo pas difficile à suivre façon gardien de la galaxie (ces films sont cons c'est pas de ma faute).

Résultat la bande annonce est mensongère.

Oui il y a de l'humour mais au final assez peu. Et non les personnages ne sont pas débiles.

Donc, D&D le film ! (c'est long ou pas pour arriver enfin au sujet ?)

Le film raconte comment un voleur coquin mais sympathique va vouloir monter un dernier gros coup pour récupérer un artéfact magique pouvant ressusciter son épouse. Malheureusement tout part en pistaches, il finit en prison, ses pensées tournés vers son épouse mais aussi vers sa fille qu'il laisse derrière lui. Apres s'être échappé il rejoindra un ancien membre de son groupe de voleur pour retrouver sa fille avant de se retrouver embrigader dans ni plus ni moins qu'un complot mondial (ou presque, disons continental).

Alors déjà c'est beau. La mise en scène n'a rien de spécial, il n'y a pas de symbolisme dans le cadrage ou l'agencement des plans mais c'est efficace, et certaines scènes sont assez jolies.

Les personnages sont sympathiques, et ils le sont parce que ce sont des archétypes avant d'être des personnages. Le paladin n'est pas juste un gars en armure tout gentil. C'est un gentil qui dégouline, qui vous caresse la joue en vous disant au revoir et qui est juste absolument fantastique. La méchante est très méchante, le méchant est cynique et l'assume et on à un putain de grasgon ! (c'est un dragon mais qui est gras).

Et si ce sont des archétypes c'est parce que ce film est une très bonne adaptation du jeux de rôle, à savoir qu'on dirais une partie de jdr, les plans sont foireux, les personnages ne sont pas héroïques, les règles du jeux sont moqués dans certains dialogues, bref l'ambiance générale est très bonne.

Coté adaptation il y a beaucoup d'ester eggs, le plus souvent tres discret, sans en faire des caisses (et c'est très bien). Par exemple le jeune femme cornu, qui est une druidesse et qui est un des meilleurs perso ? A aucun moment du film on ne vous dit que c'est une sorte de demi-diable. On voit ses cornes, sur un plan (peut etre deux) on voit qu'elle a une queue et ça s'arête là !

De la même manière le magicien du groupe prend une petite pincée de perlimpimpim avant de lancer le moindre sort. Et on ne vous expliquera pas dans le film que c'est normal, que la magie c'est des formules mais aussi des ingrédients toussa. Pourquoi on ne l'explique pas ? Parce que les personnages qui vivent dans cet univers connaissent ces choses et n'ont donc aucune raison de les expliquer.

C'est de l'ester eggs discret qui laisse deviner que l'univers est super large et c'est très bien.

Bon parfois les ester eggs sont plus grossiers et font un peu name dropping, ça aurait pu être mieux.

Niveau effet spéciaux c'est top, rien à dire, pas d'avalanche de sorts toutes les deux secondes mais quand ils sont là c'est tres propre.

Le ton général est sympa aussi, il y a un peu de violence, on est pas dans un disney (gros gros big up à la scène final avec le Ours-hiboux) et si la fin est assez convenu on a vu bien pire. Les personnages ont droit plus ou moins à leur petit développement personnel, avec certains moments touchants pour une en particulier.

Coté défaut le film s'arrête peu, les personnages sont toujours en action, à appliquer un plan ou à tenter de réparer une catastrophe mais ils n'ont visiblement pas le droit de se poser 5 minutes sans payer une taxe. De plus si la méchante est très méchante sa motivation manque un peu de consistance, être méchante est un moyen, pas un objectif.

Et puis sinon... ben c'est tout.

C'est un film que je rêverais avec plaisir et je vous le recommande.

BIOGRAPHY

Second child from a blue collar family on the fringes of Podolsk, both parents worked factory jobs (mother only part time to manage children). Occasionally watched by a neighbor, an unmarried doctor that worked nights and was the first to make some offhand mention of the “mental illness” that led to homosexuality or people believing themselves to be “the wrong gender” and how they were “treated”. He disappeared from his apartment without a trace when Zmei was 10. To this day Zmei thinks about whether that man was gay and trying to help a fellow queer, or was just trying to correct him early.

Factories had been shutting down or laying off mass amounts of workers already as the union fought about 8 wars with itself, but shut down quickly after Communism and the Soviet Union officially fell in 1991. The family was left scrambling. Zmei was 13.

Scrappy kid needs money? Prizefighting is easy to fall into with so many laid off, angry men looking for an excuse to beat someone up. Zmei starts spending more time focusing on strength and technique, and blue collar Russians are Riddled with machismo and unattainable ideas of masculinity. This does not help the transness, especially with having to “pose as a boy” for safety. 

Rising tension within his family and himself pushed Zmei to run away at 16 with some badly forged paperwork and a dream to one of the new democratic states. Moldova was still largely disorganized, and he was able to get some better, if still inconsistent refugee documentation, but it used the name Zmei and listed him as male. He bounced around continental europe a bit before landing in the UK at 18 (1996), where he is able to officially start to medically transition in ‘96-97 (T, Reassignment Surgery, etc) with NHS access

Instead of purely doing illegal prizefighting, Zmei discovers unsanctioned death matches on the Indie wrestling circuit (turns out, gender is stored in a Crimson Mask and a broom wrapped in barbed wire), and various coaches try to take this kid with a lot of Survival Skills in for actual training in a range of styles (Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Submission Grappling, etc) to build technique  so he isn’t so reliant on weapons and blood in matches 

After training for a while, he signs up for a beginner NAGA tournament and does much better than expected, which sparks a Deep competitiveness in him. Focusing in on one title, medal or belt at a time, he trains right with single mindedness and deadly focus that gives him a real sense of calm. Winning is  almost addictive, training almost to the breaking point then collecting a new trophy and starting over again, collecting local/national recognition in both boxing and grappling. A lot of his money still comes from being a punk indie wrestler who’s always willing to bleed or do a wild stipulation match for cash and collecting extra from all the people who bet against him.

In 2015, Zmei was competing in a Master Expert Super-Heavyweight No-Gi NAGA championship, and was put into a deadly knee lock for nearly two minutes. He refused to tap, and eventually was able to power out of it when his opponent tried to shift his grip and win the round by pinfall before collapsing. Forcing his way out of the lock had fractured his patella and pieces of his upper tibia, leading to irreparable damage to both ACL and MCL tendons. To this day, Zmei uses a cane when walking/standing for more than a couple minutes, but he DID. NOT. TAP.

Zmei’s more surprised than anything when he’s contacted by the Underdog’s parents about coaching their son for the upcoming Olympics, then realizes he’s accumulated more practice and skill along with titles and credits than he’d realized and after his injury has gained decent renown in British Combat Sports. Besides, it’s boxing, so as long as he can correct Kaan’s footwork, his coaching doesn’t require his knees to be in top shape.

The fallout of the Embezzlement Scheme hits him hard, especially when people start to investigate to see if he was involved at all, and it suddenly looks Very Suspicious that his immigration paperwork doesn't line up after he technically immigrated illegally to avoid persecution for being queer in post-soviet Russia. The fall from grace isn’t pretty, and he’s messily outed to the public.

He handles it as well as he can. Stays in sports, but tries to disappear a bit, facelessly scripting for the anchors who are actually seen on TV and writing weekly sports columns for the paper. But words are hard and he misses his people, misses the rush of a good match and the infectious primal energy of watching someone bleed. On his own time, he starts guest commentating on indie wrestling shows, which slowly leads back to his old home: illegal dark matches in a seedy basement or old warehouse. Seeing himself in a lot of the scrappy kids trying to make a name for themselves, he starts to coach again, then eventually gets tied up in booking; matching up pure boxing/BJJ/etc if fighters want, but reminding fighters that the audience wants/spends more money on bloodsport.

Despite the state of his knee, training with the wide variety fighters in the underground circuits keeps him sharp. If he wanted, he could absolutely kill a man seven different ways with his cane, standing on one leg. He hopes he won’t have to.

OTHER NOTES

Zmei - name comes from dragons in Russian folklore. Sometimes they are male or female, purely multi-headed serpents or humanoid, and generally very mutable. Trans dragon name. 

Mans whole torso is Covered in various scars, especially from barbed wire, glass, thumbtacks, the Forks™️ etc in death matches. He’s a lil too proud of how well his top surgery scars blend in with the rest, esp 20ish years later

Potential Connections: 

 Underdog - Mr. Miyagi type vibe? once and future coach? They find each other again in illegal fights a couple years later and reconnect?

Tower/Combat types - Fights are always open, grinder needs meat and he’s willing to help them beef up 

Gang Leaders - Zmei is many things, but Rich isn’t one. If needed, this old master could be hired by either gang, or even the govt strike team for the right financial compensation.

Doctors - Mans is chronically in pain from something, whether that’s his knee, a back that’s taken too many bumps, etc or just checking in on his dosage of T that he’s been on for about 20 years.

Casino folks/Gamblers - It's a low form of entertainment, but gladiatorial combat is lucrative. Is the Red Rose casino looking for a business deal? Are they trying to shut this gambling den down, or completely neutral to a Neutral party?

As someone who lives near Birmingham who can’t escape the commonwealth games I’d like to hear your opinion.

I just think they're stupid. They're obviously just a knock-off Olympics and I can't take a title like 'Commonwealth champion' seriously cause it doesn't even really tell you how much competition there was. Same goes for the European games (I think there have been two editions so far) and whatever else may exist, I think sticking to continental and world championships for each sport is best and that way the Olympics are actually super special in the way they're a massive event to gather athletes from all kinds of sports together. And, like the Olympics, it's just sooo much money that could be used for other things.

But I hope you enjoy it anyway, it'll probably be great fun to witness!
