Statement of John Crosley, Son of Former Slave Prince Crosley Who Served in the Continental Army
Record Group 15: Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs Series: Case Files of Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Applications Based on Revolutionary War Service
I William Spencer of Lyme in the State of Connecticut aged 54 years on oath depose and say that I am a Grandson of Israel Spencer formerly of East Haddam deceased. My Grandfather was for many years a Justice of the Peace for the County of Middlesex as I have understood. At the time of his death his papers came into the hands of my father. Some years afterwards my father moved into the State of Mississipi and when he went away the most valuable of the old papers in his possession were handed on to me and the rest were destroyed. I have never been able to find among those that were left any record of marriages performed by my grandfather, and if there ever was any it was probably destroyed. I do not believe that there is anything of the kind now in existence. My father has died since his removal. I was acquainted with Prince Crosly before his death and also with his wife Caroline Crosley. Before his death they lived together as husband and wife and I have no doubt but that they were married by my grandfather as is represented by him. She has never been again married. Wm Spencer {State of Connecticut New London County} ss Lyme Sept 24 A.D. 1838 Personally appeared William Spencer signer of the foregoing deposition and before me made oath to the truth of his issue. And I further certify that the said deposant is personally known to me & that he is a credible witness. Richard E Selden Jr Justice of peace

Turnsgiving 2022: Day 4
What If?
Tumblr media
After doing more research for both SS&SP and my own college project, I definitely think Turn should’ve included more or Benjamin Tallmadge’s military escapades, which were with his regiment, the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons. They were active in the important battles of the Philadelphia Campaign and then there were raids led by Tallmadge in New York throughout the rest of the war against the British for their supplies and territory. They also served as part of General Washington’s life guard. Turn showed a couple these at The Battle of Stony Point and the Battle of Fort St. George, but on a lesser scale. I could say a lot more, but I’ll refrain from going full military history nerd at the moment. In my opinion, it wouldn’t have derived too much of the “spying” from the show’s plot because one of the Dragoon’s jobs was reconnaissance- patrols to get enemy troop numbers, camp locations, and amount of weapons and supplies they had. Cavalrymen were respected because of the ability they had to have as horsemen, shooters, messengers, and scouts. One of their other key roles? Filling space in General Washington’s guard. Showing more of Benjamin’s cavalry duties would’ve shown how intelligent he was and why he was capable of being Washington’s spymaster.

Bay of Biscay, Castro Urdiales (No. 2)
Parts of the continental shelf extend far into the bay, resulting in fairly shallow waters in many areas and thus the rough seas for which the region is known. Large storms occur in the bay, especially during the winter months. The Bay of Biscay is home to some of the Atlantic Ocean's fiercest weather; abnormally high waves occur there. Up until recent years it was a regular occurrence for merchant vessels to founder in Biscay storms. The Gulf Stream enters the bay following the continental shelf's border anti-clockwise (the Rennell Current), keeping temperatures moderate all year long.
The southernmost portion is the Cantabrian Sea.
The southern end of the gulf is also called in Spanish "Mar Cantábrico" (Cantabrian Sea), from the Estaca de Bares, as far as the mouth of Adour river, but this name is not generally used in English. It was named by Romans in the 1st century BC as Sinus Cantabrorum (Bay of the Cantabri) and also, Mare Gallaecum (the Sea of the Galicians). On some medieval maps, the Bay of Biscay is marked as El Mar del los Vascos (the Basque Sea).
The Bay of Biscay has been the site of many famous naval engagements over the centuries. In 1592 the Spanish defeated an English fleet during the Battle of the Bay of Biscay. The Biscay campaign of June 1795 consisted of a series of manoeuvres and two battles fought between the British Channel Fleet and the French Atlantic Fleet off the southern coast of Brittany during the second year of the French Revolutionary Wars. USS Californian sank here after striking a naval mine on 22 June 1918. In 1920 SS Afrique sank after losing power and drifting into a reef in a storm with the loss of 575 lives. On 28 December 1943, the Battle of the Bay of Biscay was fought between HMS Glasgow and HMS Enterprise, and a group of German destroyers as part of Operation Stonewall during World War II. U-667 sank on 25 August 1944 in position 46°00′N 01°30′W, when she struck a mine. All hands were lost.
On 12 April 1970, Soviet submarine K-8 sank in the Bay of Biscay due to a fire that crippled the submarine's nuclear reactors. An attempt to save the sub failed, resulting in the death of forty sailors and the loss of four nuclear torpedoes. Due to the great depth (15,000 ft or 4,600 m), no salvage operation was attempted.

Whenever I see people talking about how some countries are in decline due to low natality, and then search their politics on issues like abortion I actually hope that these countries do stop existing and that ones that do value life end up being created. Also reading about Japan's past w this was gut churning
Yeah since I do understand japanese I sometimes browse their forum/SNS and it's insane the amount of women saying a child is just too expensive to have one. Japan's population is declining and aging like crazy and the dim newer generation has to bear the weight of this aging population. Many people complain their country is ruled by oldheads who are out of touch with reality. IDK if you followed up the fiasco of the Tokyo Olympics and how the Olympics bureau screwed up the initial (and quite promising) ceremony plan for a much more austere and boring ceremony (sure C0vîd changed their plans, but what was the point to straight up cancel the entertainers presence when they could simply reduce the scale/budget of their performence?).
Shit happening in Japan is very distopic and wicked and the only ppl hyping this country are racialist rightoids raving about muh crimeless ethnostate wet dream and weebs who think Japan is like anime and want to live there as rootless plants living their Yamato Japan dream à la PewDiePie who's finally settled there....only to hang out with White gaijin 💀 lmao But beside these idiots, hardly anyone wants to live through such a demographic nightmare.
I've always said Japanese entertainment culture being so rich was a cope of an IRL lifestyle that was bleak and unfulfilling. And now this whole anime/manga culture has made its way here bc the Western world is undergoing the same societal collapse that Japan did a few decades before (social isolation, gaming, parasocial relationships becoming the norm over social ones, etc.).
People with fulfilling life don't watch anime/do gaming for hours once they get home or dress up as fictional characters half their age.. (especially when 99% of these shows are stupid and intellectually regressive). This self indulgence is why many adults today behave like children and become degenerates. I got so much shit for saying that, but an anime fan over 25 years old has something wrong with them. Casual watching is ok but being obsessive with that culture is mental deficiency in action.
And yes, Japan History esp during WWII is sketchy but they have this sort of revisionism where they act like nothing much happened. It's highkey creepy to see the amount of japanese words coming straight from German (アルバイト, ワッペン etc. ) when you know the context of how this happened... 🥴 and let's not talk about the weird SS uniform memorabilia in Visual Kei They've become the submissive USA lackey post war though so I guess they made a deal to not get much trouble for that👀. I had a Chinese friend of mine who despised Japan and I think that's also the case of Koreans. Those countries mutually hate each other since centuries now anyway. Not surprised to see Westerners aligning themselves with Japan when Japan has the same history of colonialism and cultural & racial supremacism. Imperialists countries have this weird fellowship around the evilness they did lol
Even when browsing on japanese SNS I'm shocked by the casual racism of Japanese netizens especially against continental Asians. They had a field day during c0vîd dragging the Chinese, and whenever a public figure gets in trouble they happen to get suspicious about some supposed foreign ancestry ("this person always looked kinda foreign..."). Japanese netizens HATE Kiko Mizuhara because she doesn't have japanese blood (she's half Korean half USAmerican) yet immigrated in Japan with her (Korean) mom while still a baby and has become one of the most successful supermodel in Japan and oversea, but it doesn't stop them from calling her a foreigner and telling how she can't properly pull off the kimono cause she's not a pure japanese breed this kuso Zainichi imposter ùwú. I even saw one send shots at Kana Oya because she's half Japanese half Brazilian and call her a "poor Brazilian" (poor as in "no money" since Brazil is indeed a poor country but how does any of that relates to Kana personally..?). They have this weird obsession to use someone foreignness/mixedness as a diss. Interestingly, I hardly see them having the same energy against half White entertainers¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (as long as they're not half Chinese or Korean ofc lol)

Franco Fracassi - 1945 Hitler

While I also think Byleth needed full voice acting to be good, I also think you're giving way too much credit to Shez here. As others have said before me, having more voiced lines didn't make Shez better written. The revenge plot is dropped fairly early in Hopes: Shez says multiple times that he doesn't care about it - it's Arval who wants to attack Sothis. Shez even tells Arval it's not worth it/maybe they're too gung ho into this. So Shez doesn't have the revenge plot as a trait much (1)
Shez also has no character arc whatsoever in Hopes. Byleth has an arc: a cold, emotionless mercenary turned professor who loves helping their students, who helps to aid during a war, can either become the new archbishop or leader of Fodlan - or have negative growth and revert back to their Ashen Demon ways and go back to killing. That's definitely a number of arcs for Byleth in 3H. In Hopes, Shez is basically just a go with the flow character who has little input for anything at all (2)
And that ignores the elephant in the room: we know almost nothing about Shez beyond that they're a mercenary raised by a mysterious woman/adoptive mom. Everything about them is kept to the mystery that's never resolved and it just makes Shez feel like an incomplete characters who already lacks a true character arc as is. Having fully voice acting works - until you see how lacking Shez was in every other aspect. It's hard to say Shez even matters in their debut game at all (3)
Thanks for your ask, anon, and sorry it took me a while to get back to this--I spent the last week barely alive thanks to being at Gamescom and applying for a new job. Pre-emptive caveat here that I have not played 3 Hopes, only observed it from the sidelines through posts by my mutuals.
I'll admit that maybe I gave Shez too much credit in terms of actual characterization/character development across the game, but in a way that only makes Byleth worse, imo, because even a character who is apparently still written so shoddily still feels like more of an actual character rather than some weird mix between a character and a self-insert that's neither fish nor fowl, and that's just sad. Maybe it really is just the voice acting (again--Byleth is neither fish nor fowl here--they clearly hired two VAs for the battle lines, yet could not be arsed to hire them for the actual dialogue lines in 3 Houses), or maybe it's just the fact that so much of how 3 Houses actually plays out squanders the narrative potential Byleth had (e.g. what you mentioned about Byleth either growing into a position of continental leadership or regressing to being a mercenary--it's definitely there, but it has next to no emotional impact, because Byleth themselves wrestles so little with those ideas especially in routes that are not SS).
So as sad as it is, even with what little I know of Shez, they already feel like more of a character than Byleth to me.

top five favorite submarines?
This question is cruel, because I love all submarines. Honorable mentions that didn't make this list: USS Barb (SS-220), of WWII fame; USS Seawolf (SSN-21), the second submarine and first military submarine I went on; and the French Surcouf, because it is a fine example of what happens when a - possibly drunk - naval architect asks the question," What would happen if...?" (It had 10 torpedo tubes, 6 anti-aircraft guns, two 8-inch deck guns, and a goddamn plane.)
Anyways! Onto the submarines.
5. DSV Limiting Factor. First submarine to visit all 5 of the deepest points in the ocean, during the Five Deeps expedition. That is an incredible feat. Plus, she looks cool.
Tumblr media
4. USS Nautilus (SSN-571). The first nuclear-powered submarine and the first to transit under the North Pole. Enough said.
Tumblr media
3. DSV Alvin. How can you not like this one? It found the wrecks of the USS Scorpion and the Titantic, found the first deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and has literally been resurrected from the bottom of the sea (she sank aboard her support ship early on in her lifetime). Alvin is just a classic.

2. USS Alexandria (SSN-757). I have a soft spot for this one because I spent a week aboard with the crew. Awesome people, awesome boat. Really love it.

In first place, the great-great-great-great-grandfather of them all: the Turtle. Built for the Continental Army during the American Revolution, this was a completely and totally useless one-man hand-powered submarine that never did a single useful thing, except for something very important: she was the very first submarine capable of independent underwater operation and movement and the first to use naval screws for propulsion. So, straight in to number one.
