anyway, I just turned in my paper that ive been working on for the last few months (yay, finally, it ate like all of my free time and energy) and suddenly I have too much free time and not much too read or watch (I had saved so many fics I cant manage to read anymore)
any coming of age books (or fics) or movies recommendations? (I need me some honey and tangerines vibes yk? ive been listening to the playlist too much again. one day I think ill read that fic again, but today is not the day)
much love to go you all in the ask box, eli <3
I'm doing pretty good! went to a yoga class tonight and I'm seeing the tommyinnit live show tomorrow so it's shaping up to be a pretty great weekend!
I actually filmed a video to post here on language day and everything but I wanted to redo it so my face wasn't fully in frame but then I just didn't get around to it :( oh well next time
OOO congrats on turning in that paper!! that's a huge accomplishment, I hope you get a great grade on it. and yay for free time!
oh boy ok coming of age recs I can do this. I haven't read any coming of age books since I was a teenager though so keep in my my memory of these are all hazy
books:
the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky - hallmarker of the coming of age genre, read this when I was 16 and cried, even if you've seen the movie I highly recommend the book
aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz - literally was one of my favorite books for so many years. I read it when I was 15 and became obsessed with it. I still look back on it so warmly it's just such a great book
it's kind of a funny story by ned vizzini - also read this one when I was like 16ish. I remembered enjoying it but not as much as the other two I've listed here. still very good though!
movies:
cha cha real smooth (2022) - actually one of my favorite coming of age films I've ever seen. it's a coming of age film about a guy in his early 20s instead of in his teens which is refreshing in its own. it hit particularly hard for me because I saw it when I was 22 and freshly graduated from college unsure what to do, the main character is 22 and freshly graduated from college unsure what to do. it's also a very unique setup and I really loved how they pulled it off
the edge of seventeen (2016) - this might be a controversial pick because the main character is actually pretty insufferable in this, but that's part of why I enjoyed it. the character is meant to be insufferable. she's a teenage girl dealing with the hell of being a teenage girl and she sucks! it's an intentional thing and it does it very well! I would say it still falls flat in some areas, but I'm mainly recommending it because it's so refreshing to have an mc genuinely be a shitty person
sing street (2016) - I count this as a coming of age movie but it's also kind of a music movie? it's incredibly fun no matter what. the songs are so catchy, the characters are all great, and the relationships are just all very well done
the kings of summer (2013) - genuinely why do I never hear anyone talk about this movie. I haven't seen it in so long but I remember it being incredibly funny with a great dose of summertime whimsy
hunt for the wilderpeople (2016) - tbh I never thought of this as a coming of age movie and it might be a bit different than most of the films on here but I was looking up lists of coming of age movies to try and remember which ones I've seen and I saw this one mentioned a few times. if you're a fan of taika waititi films, in my opinion this is his best one hands down. it's hilarious but also incredibly sweet and heartwarming at the same time
moonrise kingdom (2012) - very charming and storybook esque in the way all wes anderson films are, but with a really sweet story between two kids at its core. again, different from most of the ones on this list, but definitely an enjoyable one all the same
hope this list helps!

it still hits me so hard about ofmd how the first thing ed does is make stede happy. no not even yet in ep4 but at the end of ep3 when he takes him seriously from the start, calling him his chosen title and saying he heard all about him. and stede smiles and that triumphant music plays as he passes out like. ed made stede happy from the very first minute they met and im gonna pass away

Photo Ready: Taika Waititi
Tumblr media
You watch Taika have a photo shoot for press on the upcoming movie and you laugh to yourself quietly. Taika says, “Y/N, you should join me.”
You look up quickly and say, “I’m not sure about that.”
Taika crosses his arms while doing a little dance moving closer to you and asks, “May you take these photos with me m’lady?”
You chuckle and say, “Only some Taika!!”
He smiles and says, “Perfect!! Give my fellow lady her wardrobe!!”
You look and see assistants with a gorgeous black dress. You smile at it and go with the assistants. They do your hair, makeup, and tidy you up in your dress and heels. You look in the mirror and look amazed by how amazing you look. The makeup artist says, “You look stunning Y/N.”
You smile and say “Thank you so much.”
She smiles and you walk out with the assistance of the assistants. Taika looks at you and says, “Wow Y/N, you look absolutely beautiful.”
You blush and say, “Thank you Taika.”
He reaches his hand out for you and you grab his hand. The photographer asks for you guys to pose looking out into the distance together and Taika holds you in his arms. Taika asks, “Is this okay?”
The photographer nods and Taika asks, “Y/N, are you okay with the pose?”
You say, “Yeah, Ofcourse.”
Taika smiles while staring in your eyes and proceeds to be prepared for the photos. You move close to him and you both look into the distance facing the camera. The photographer says, “Y/N, you’re a natural with the camera. I’m impressed.”
You say, “Thank you.”
You look back to see Taika looking at you and you’re in disbelief how much he seems to be enjoying this. You smile at him and you guys continue to pose. There’s a pose where he picks you up bridal style and you both make surprised faces. When the photoshop runs is over you both review the photos and the photographer asks, “which two would you Ike to choose for editorial?”
Taika chooses bridal style and then asks you, “Y/N , which one would you like?”
You smile at him and say “the one of the both of our faces close to one another smiling big.”
Taika looks at you and says, “ I love that one too.”
You realize you both have that deep and emotional stare again and snaps out of it. You speed walk and take off your makeup and dress. You dress up in your sweats and t-shirt and when you’re walking out when you bump into Taika. Taika says, “Hey Y/N.”
You say “Hey Taika.”
Taika asks, “May I talk to you quickly?”
You say, “Yeah Ofcourse. Come in.”
Taika asks, “How do you fee about all of this?”
You say, “It was a little intense but the photo shoot was fun.”
Taika then asks, “How do you feel about THIS?”
You say, “I don’t know Taika. I thought you always only saw me the friend that you make movies with.”
Taika says, “ You are always overshadowed by me when you put in so much creativity into the movies we do together. I want you to be in my life. You have always been my friend but I think I feel something more for you.”
You look flustered and say, “Taika, there’s no need to lie.”
You look at Taika and he is still serious. You walk up closely to Taika and leans his forehead against yours. You both pull apart and stand quietly staring at one another and you lock the door. You turn off the lights and kiss Taika.
Tumblr media
Taika pulls you closer and he pulls off his shirt and so do you. You both become intense when Taika says, “ Wait, I want this to be special. We shouldn’t do this here. I want you to be special.”
You say, “I agree.”
You both put on your shirts and turn on the lights. You laugh and Taika asks, “What happened?”
You say, “ Turn around.”
Taika turns around and sees his hair as a fluffy mess. He laughs and fixes it. He turns around back to you and runs to you and holds you in his arms. He pecks your lips and says, “ I would like to bring you on an amazing magical date.”
You smile and says, “ Ye-”
Taika asks, “ Y/N Y/L/N, May you be my date to a magical night of wine and more in Italy?”
You giggle and say,” Yes, I would love to Taika.”
He raises you hand in his and kisses it.
Taika caresses your face and kisses you passionately. You kiss him back and say, “ I’ll see you at the Oscars.”
Taika asks, “Would you do the honors of being be my date this year?”
You nod and you both admire one another and finally let go. Taika says, “I can’t wait to see you. I’ll pick you up around 7. Bye Y/N”
You say, “Sounds like a plan. Bye Taika.”
10 months later...
You and Taika sit in the car and finally make it to the Oscars. Taika gets out as the cameras flash and opens the door for you and grabs your hand to help you out. The cameras flash brighter and more quickly. You dazzle them while you are in a ruby red shiny gown, heels, hair in a side part, red lips and deep eye look. Taika has his black suit on
You both walk on the carpet together and the paparazzi can’t help but to be in awe as they stare at how amazing you and Taika look. You and Taika smile at one another and at the cameras. You both do interviews on the carpet and during one interview the interviewer asks, “ Are you both fueling the speculation about the dating rumors when it comes to the both of you?”
Taika says, “ We’re not confirming or defusing any rumors. Letting others try to figure out the status is the most amazing part.”
You all laugh and finish this last interview before taking seats for the show. While enjoying the Oscars they reach the category of the film Taika and you were apart of making. “For best adapted screenplay the Oscar goes to...”
Taika holds your hand and lightly squeezes. You put your other hand on top of his and smile at him to calm him down.
“JoJo Rabbit!!”
Taika gets up and you get up and he kisses your cheek. You tell him, “I’ll stay here”
Taika asks, “Are you sure my love?”
You nod and he pecks your lips and rushes to the stage.
Tumblr media
He takes the award and gives a firm handshake to the one giving the award as the crowd is clapping loud and says, “Thank you all that voted for this movie. I am honored to have such an award for a film including me involved. This is really great, and i dedicate this to my wonderful fans, production and crew and everyone that has worked very hard to make this possible. I would give to a special thank you to someone that many may know about. Y/N Y/L/N played a huge role in this movie and in my life in general. Y/N this award goes to you too. Thank you for being the creative master that you are and one of the most amazing things to touch my heart. She’s put in a lot of work into the organization of the film and I would like to thank you. Thank you Y/N, you’re one of the most amazing partners and an amazing girlfriend that I couldn’t be anymore thankful for to be in my life. I love you, my sparkle daze. Thank you all again!!”
You tear up in the eyes and he takes his seat back next to you and kisses you again. You both smile and after the show is over you are both given congrats and great conversation. The paparazzi takes more photos of the both of you and doing more interviews.
2 years later...
You and Taika pose for Vogue magazine as an engaged couple. You both smile and you say, “These were the actions we ignited our romance doing and now we’re engaged.”
Taika smiles and says, “ I wouldn’t rather it any other way.”
You both continue to pose and this last photo of the both of you kissing while dancing and smiling in Italy...
THE END

The Best Picture 2020 Round-Up
Tumblr media
It has been a short awards season. The Golden Globes were closer to Christmas than the Super Bowl, and the BAFTAs fell on the latter. In a way, this has made this year more exciting than most. The quick succession of award ceremonies has made predictions more manic. Today I’m flipping between whether this year’s Best Picture and Director combination is going to be AB or AA, Parasite or 1917, Klaus or Toy Story 4, For Sama or American Factory? The Academy logic sometimes catches me out.
The list of nine films up for Best Picture (why not ten?) are made up of seven satisfying films, and two I would’ve been happy to lose. In its place? What about the panic-inducing rush of Uncut Gems? Heck, how about another potent foreign-language entry in the form of Celine Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady On Fire? Dolemite Is My Name was one of the most funny feel-good films of last year. Let us not mention how Hustlers was shunned in by the stuffed shirts at the Academy. Jennifer Lopez have you met Adam Sandler? Congrats, you both got unfairly stiffed in the acting categories.
So, in dealing with what we have, here are the Best Picture nominees ranked:
1.       Parasite
The crowning achievement in this year’s Best Picture line-up; an genre-twisting social commentary with thrills to satisfy a universal audience. There’s not much use blowing into the flames when the bonfire is already alight, but Parasite is brilliant. In craft and in tone, it is a multi-layered Swiss Watch of a film and, like the house, reveals hidden areas you don’t expect. So I will stop blowing my own horn and making this sound like hyperbole. Parasite needs to be seen.
2.       Little Women
Greta Gerwig’s version of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is amazingly fresh. I say amazingly because it could’ve been a handsome adaptation with the Gerwig stamp, and a fresh-faced stellar cast. Fortunately, Little Women packs all the emotional intelligence and understanding beyond my expectations. There is nothing that feels sloppy about the back-and-forth timeline; it serves to highlight the kindship through ambitions, disappointments, and decisions. Nevertheless, the lack of nominations seems to draw a baffling consensus this is somehow easy to do.
3.       Marriage Story
As adult divorce dramas go, Marriage Story is the most readily accessible in a while. The film is a relief in that it doesn’t dwell on the devastation, nor is it a cold and stiff depiction - which I have to admit, didn’t warm me to Noah Baumbach’s previous work The Squid and the Whale. No doubt, a good heft of Marriage Story’s comic-tragic achievements are through the performances. Plus, there is deft calculation to the film’s emotional heights. Be it through scenes that you wouldn’t imagine would turn into a fierce battle, or two contrasting sequences involving Sondheim.
4.       The Irishman
The Martin Scorsese stamp is apparent throughout most of The Irishman. The moments which ring the loudest are sometimes too on the nose and, arguably, could be dispensed. Nevertheless, the film is a masterful self-reflection of the fading glamour of the criminal underworld. What I about The Irishman is how it captures the natural final destination any human being; simply becoming old. The last third of the film makes up for any slouches in the narrative.
5.       Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino plows on as the filmmaker who just can’t help himself. That is the downfall of most his films post-Jackie Brown. The good news is that Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is Tarantino’s best film in this aforementioned era. It is a riot most of the time, and infuriatingly ill-disciplined the some of the time (the Bruce Lee section feels like a self-inflicted intermission). Tarantino is a master of set-pieces and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood thrillingly reminds us there is still no one quite like him.
6.       1917
At the time of writing, the annual backlash of the over-achiever has already begun. This year, it is 1917. I think it is already burdened with an archetypal get from A-to-B wartime narrative. No question that’s what it mostly is, but the flourishes are remarkable none-the-less. The camerawork is undeniably gripping and impressive, and it contributes to the inescapable task the two soldiers face (I also extend my plaudits to George McKay). If 1917 looses out on Best Picture, we might raise our estimations again.
7.       Ford Vs. Ferrari
Like Rush, I remember watching Ford Vs. Ferrari like a race car speeding by: you get a gust of wind which captures your breath, then it disappears into distance. My point is that James Mangold has made a dependable, Saturday afternoon blast of a film. With an ideal sound system, it is gloriously deafening to hear ever gear-change and engine rev. However, judging it as an awards contender, Ford Vs. Ferrari seems like a curious choice. That’s no con really. The film’s lack of pretension makes it stand alone in the Best Picture pack.
8.       Joker
As divisive as Joker has become, it think it sits more uncomfortably in thematic areas. It is a comic book film with the coveted “Winner of the Golden Lion 2019” stamp on it. So with that in mind, it’s no biggie to say Joker is dunderheaded. Mental health, societal inequality, poverty – it has all the tact of an annoying toddler bashing you around the head with an inflatable hammer. Yet I don’t hate Joker. It’s a clumsy imitation of Seventies revenge flicks (and yes, The King of Comedy), and I guess you can’t fault the film’s commitment to that grimy tone.
9.       Jojo Rabbit
Speaking of imitations, JoJo Rabbit desperately wants to chum up with Mel Brooks and Wes Anderson. It seems to be working with popular audiences, and not working with critics. I have to admit, I fall into the latter. Why? It’s not a bad film, but it’s a safe film. Most of the jokes are too broad and Taika Waititi as Hitler comes across as self-satisfying. Apart from one or two moments of effectual moments, the drama feels shop-bought. Jojo’s message is right, but it lacks the transgressive heights for which I wish it attained.
