This is not a drill. Our new Community Guidelines are here.
We recently introduced Community Labels to give everyone more control over their dashboard experience. With this new feature, you can adjust your feed to your preferred comfort level by setting the types of content you want to see. It was our first step toward a more open Tumblr.
Today, we’re taking the next step: We now welcome a broader range of expression, creativity, and art on Tumblr, including content depicting the human form (yes, that includes the naked human form).
So, even if your creations contain nudity, mature subject matter, or sexual themes, you can now share them on Tumblr using the appropriate Community Label so that everyone remains in control of the types of content they see on their dash.
We have updated our Community Guidelines to reflect these changes; the rest of our content policies remain the same: We still don’t allow hate, spam, violent threats, or anything illegal, and visual depictions of sexually explicit acts remain off-limits on Tumblr (if you want to know more about that, our CEO Matt recently explained why it’s not feasible for us to safely and successfully support porn communities at this time). If you come across these types of content, please continue to report them to us.
Similarly, if you come across content on Tumblr that doesn’t appear to be appropriately labeled, please let us know. This is how we’ll work together to create safer spaces for everyone on Tumblr, whatever their interests and needs.
We hope this shift creates more room for artistic expression to flourish on Tumblr while empowering each of you to craft your own experience and safely explore and discover the things you love.

Tumblr media
Years ago, Tumblr showed me this ad for my local mechanic, clearly targeting gay car owners — effectively I might say! I screenshot it and posted to Tumblr. Today I found that Tumblr has flagged it as inappropriate. To which I could only respond "but... YOU showed this to ME."
Tumblr, you are self-loathing. Get yourself together.

The SS Eastland and Community Guidelines
I just watched Ask a Mortician talk about the tremendous work she and her team put into The Forgotten Disaster of the SS Eastland. I watched that video, I love that kind of stuff, and this one was truly well made. But the video I was watching was called Did We Really Violate Community Guidelines so that's where it ended - she and her team had worked their asses off to produce a documentary of a little known disaster and now it doesn't show up in your recommendations or in search Because YouTube found it had no educational intent. You can find it only by browsing the channel itself.
Tumblr media
Months of work she said, buried in the slag heap of videos you'll never see. YouTube is a stone wall. There is no way to reach a person - not by email or by phone - you can't plead your case to the automated messages -
Where does that do but leave you questioning where you're going and whether it's worth it?
A per YouTube the real problem was the death, violence and gore - I have to assume it was the describing of the many dead, and the loved ones left who had to verify they had received the right body to bury, because there were just so many and clerical errors happened.
And I guess maybe it was also the story of the boy who never spoke of the day he swam and swam to recover the dead but once. It was a memory of a dead woman, deep in the hull of the ship, with her infant still wrapped in hers arms.
The sorrow resulting from the SS Eastland gutted me. That's violence of a sort, I suppose.

Tumblr media
Tumblr updated their Community Guidelines on November 1, 2022.
Sexually Explicit Material. Visual depictions of sexually explicit acts (or content with an overt focus on genitalia) are not allowed on Tumblr. That includes pictures, videos, GIFs, drawings, CGI, or anything similar. Historically significant art that you may find in a mainstream museum and which depicts sex acts—such as from India’s Śuṅga Empire—are now allowed on Tumblr with proper labeling.
We will never violate these guidelines and applaud Tumblr's efforts to keep Mature content away from minors and those that don't wish to view it.
If you are at least 18 years old and want to continue to see the content posted on this blog you have to update your settings to show Mature content and Sexual Themes (see above).
And if you're looking for something a bit less provocative be sure to check out our other blog: Slow’s Best Babes | Archive
Cheers and be nice to your fellow humans.

Who is doing this?? At this point I know someone has to be sending my posts for reviews. I go WEEKS without community labels and suddenly I get this?
This picture is as wholesome as it gets. Why are you doing this and what’s wrong with you?

So I got an email from Pinterest notifying me that one of the pins I’d saved got deleted for violating Community Guidelines, or whatever, which I was going to ignore bc I usually don’t think it’s worth my time, but then I read what the violations were:
Tumblr media
And I’m like… that’s weird. I don’t save any pins or even consume content that has anything sexual in it- I’m just not interested in that stuff, and it sometimes makes me uncomfortable, so I just try to avoid it (sometimes it will be hinted or reference, but it’s never anything explicit, and definitely never graphic).
So I’m wondering- what thing did they either accidentally flag or did I accidentally save that had anything sexual or fetish related?
The picture in question?
Tumblr media
What. Even.
I don’t even know what the most baffling part of this is. Like, for one, these are literally screenshots from a kids show- the most “indecent” thing in here is Chat Noir being on top of Ladybug (which isn’t, and just mildly suggestive at best), but you can’t even see that in this image, just Chat’s huge smile [bottom left].
Is it the tongue pictures?? Do the Pinterest overlord bots think anything with tongue showing outside the mouth is implying a hot make out or oral? Are tongues indecent now?
Is it Chat Noir’s leather outfit? The cat ears and bell? The list did include fetishes, and we all know furies and BDSM exist, and plenty of people make jokes or legit posts putting Chat into both or either category(ies).
Is it the ones with their butts in the air?? [top two images] Do they think this is a sex position? Ready for the dirty? This stupid pose is a decently common gag in cartoons to make the character look ridiculous. I’ve only seen it sexualized in fan works and in anime/manga (which has its own reputation..)
I’m genuinely at a loss here. If any of the pics in the collage were interpreted as sexual, I’d lean towards the top row set, I pointed out the tongue one more as an exaggeration, and kind of on the cat costume, but like.. everything I can think of just seems like a huge stretch. I’m genuinely baffled. Especially since, like I already said- they are taken directly from a show made for literal children. How can anything from that get flagged as explicitly sexual??
It’s not worth it to appeal for, I really don’t care about losing a Pin I barely remember saving in the first place. I’m just so confused on how their flagging system caught this as “adult content.” I’m genuinely wondering on a technical level what it saw (beyond “bots are just bad at recognition), because it obviously saw something wrong, so what was it?? What was considered sexual in these pictures??

Well, at least the bastards didn’t find it for a few days. Literally no nudity in any of the photos. If someone reported it—a curse upon your house.

Tumblr Is Allowing NSFW Content on Its Platform Again in Light of Recent Twitter Drama
Tumblr is in the process of introducing new guidlines that may include looser restrictions on mature content and nudity. Here's the full scoop.
Tumblr media
If you remember what a "Superwholockian" is, then you might have been part of the Tumblr craze during its years of popularity in the mid-2010s. Originally launched in 2007, this microblogging social media platform allows users to post blog content and multimedia on a dashboard interface that lets you scroll through recent posts. For many millennials, it was a fandom-focused platform where people discussed Doctor Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, and other media in extensive, almost obsessive detail.
In 2018, the platform rolled out controversial new guidelines on NSFW content, essentially banning nudity, pornographic material, and infamously, "female-presenting nipples" from being displayed on the site. The move caused many users to make the jump to other sites with looser restrictions like Twitter.
But in light of recent drama involving ownership of Twitter, Tumblr has introduced new guidelines that may just mean the end of the ban on NSFW content. Here's what you should know.
Tumblr media
Tumblr introduced new guidelines on NSFW content.
As of November 2022, Tumblr has rolled out new Community Guidelines for its content outlined in a blog post. Previously in late September, the site rolled out "Community Labels," which allow users to label any posts that contain sensitive or mature themes so that anyone filtering that content can continue to blog and reblog safely.
To supplement that, the new guidelines promise to "welcome a broader range of expression, creativity, and art on Tumblr."
While using the aforementioned Community Labels, users will now be able to post NSFW and mature multimedia safely and easily. However, this does not include "visual depictions of sexually explicit acts," as the platform is reportedly still working on ways to provide better support for porn communities on its platform. However, this still represents a calculated step for the platform toward allowing all manner of artists and content creators to freely and safely express themselves.
The new guidelines come as Twitter faces an uncertain future. The site was recently acquired by controversial tech billionaire and woefully-unfunny SNL host Elon Musk, who reportedly tried to back out of the deal over the course of several months. As of the acquisition, he's already fired four top executives at the site with several others having quit on their own. Thanks to the new ownership, Tumblr may be positioning itself to be an alternative platform for people who decide to leave Twitter.

Yes, Tumblr's new guidelines will allow nudity.
While "sexually-explicit acts" are still off-limits on Tumblr, the site has assured that their looser restrictions include "the naked human form." We can reasonably take those statements to mean that nudity for all genders will be allowed on the platform once more, provided that they make proper use of the Community Labels.
If these new guidelines are any indication, Tumblr is once again presenting itself as a safe place for artistic expression and female-presenting nipples.

Community Filters and Community Guidelines
NO, TUMBLR HAS NOT BROUGHT BACK SMUT OR PORN.
The Community Guidelines still state:
Adult Content. Don't upload images, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples —this includes content that is so photorealistic that it could be mistaken for featuring real-life humans (nice try, though). Certain types of artistic, educational, newsworthy, or political content featuring nudity are fine. Don’t upload any content, including images, videos, GIFs, or illustrations, that depicts sex acts.
The "Mature Content" Community label DOES NOT CIRCUMVENT THESE RULES. They explicitly state that your "Mature Content" with "Sexual themes" must still conform to the Community Guidelines.
I have no fucking idea what kind of artistic/visual content one could create with "Sexual themes" that doesn't violate Tumblr's strict rules, though.
Written smut is and has always been fine. In their examples, they suggest using the Sexual themes filter specifically for a smutty fanfic.
OTHER NOTES:
You cannot monetize posts that are tagged with a Community label.
