“When the Brazilian state of Amazonas put the responsibility of protecting one of the world’s largest freshwater fish in the hands of the indigenous inhabitants, it saved the beast from an inevitable extinction.
The giant arapaima, a piranha-proof river monster capable of growing to 10-feet in length and weighing 440 pounds, was almost wiped out by illegal fishing in the 1990s, but two decades of conservation means the ‘Terminator of the River’ is back...
Regardless of their danger, they are also known by the name ‘Cod of the Amazon’, and disregarding a ban on arapaima fishing, their numbers have been plummeting due to the demand for the firm white meat with few bones.
The arapaima disappeared from much of its historic range, and at the dawn of the new millennium, fewer than 3,000 were estimated to exist.
Taking a different model to most conservation methods in the Amazon, João Campos-Silva, an ecologist at the Institutio Juruá, decided to work with local communities to preserve arapaima fishing, and to help people realize the kind of money they could make by protecting the environment.
“Conservation should mean a better life for locals,” Campos-Silva told CNN. “So in this case conservation started to make sense. Now local people say ‘we need to protect the environment, we need to protect nature, because more biodiversity means a better life...'”
According to Campos-Silva, there are now 330,000 arapaima living in 1,358 lakes in 35 managed areas, with over 400 communities involved in managing them. The income generated from fishing rights is pouring into those communities, who are using it to fund medical infrastructure, schools, and more.” -via Good News Network, 10/26/21

Mugshot monday(+ weekend round-up)
- Was that purchased in a waffle house in a fly over state? Yep! Do I need to visit another waffle house? Probably not, but it was a fun trip.
- the forklift actually happened late Friday, and it wasn't the only time he got it stuck that day. He sunk it the first time damn near to the deck, but hey, when you're a 22 y.o. dude, not much is your fault.
- Weekend was spent doing laundry, doing homework, going to Costco, coing to Carters, doing dishes... and not getting any me time.
- Tell me you are in a cult without telling me you are in a cult: I actually did the math before thinking about buying that quantity of scrub daddies. #noGeoffputthemback
- And not to be outdone by last Monday, an employee that I had to write up last week had a major medical incident at work today and is fighting for his life tonight. No, not workplace related but sitting with someone while they are exhibiting stroke like symptoms and seeing the fear in his eyes but trying to keep him comfortable and sitting...fucking sucks. Not my first rodeo, at all, but on this end it's not fun. I also learned: my boss is also cool hand Luke and EMT trained. So we have that going for us...
- on the upside, because I don't want to end up that way and because I want to get even smaller, I picked up my key for the gym today. Here's to getting out some frustrations!!!
Have a good week yall- today was dump day, and my fleet can haul on Thursday. 2 days of making sure my new software works, 1 day of teaching my crew how to use it, then we get it done. Wish me luck!!!
Much love!

Introduction
Welcome to The Ocean Advocate, a platform dedicated to addressing critical issues and raising public consciousness about the pressing challenges confronting marine biology, particularly within the commercial fishing industry.
The world's oceans span more than 70% of the planet's surface and are home to a diverse range of plant and animal life. The commercial fishing industry has become an essential component of global food security, employing millions of people worldwide.
However, the fishing industry is facing daunting challenges, including overfishing, bycatch, and habitat destruction, which pose significant threats to marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. These issues are compounded by a lack of adequate regulation, enforcement, and accountability, which have led to widespread ecological degradation and overexploitation.
Through this blog, we aim to stimulate constructive discourse and promote action to address these issues head-on. We will delve deeply into the scientific underpinnings of fishing practices, explore sustainable fishing techniques, and highlight the latest research in marine conservation.
Join us as we take an unflinching look at the problems facing the commercial fishing industry and learn how we can collaborate to safeguard the oceans and the biodiversity they sustain. It is incumbent upon us to act swiftly and decisively to protect our planet's most precious resource for generations to come.
Resources for what you can do will be uploaded soon!

“Millions of sharks could be saved from being caught on fishing hooks with a recent invention that acts like a car’s hazard lights.
Called SharkGuard, the device fits onto the longlines used by fishermen and creates an electrical field around a baited hook, which sharks and rays pick up with their electroreceptors.
Tests have shown that it can reduce the bycatch of these animals by 91% for sharks and 71% for rays...
With efficacy proven, Dr. Enever and colleagues said they are now working to overcome a barrier of battery life so fishers can “fit it and forget it.”
A full set of induction-charged SharkGuard devices for 2,000 hooks would cost around $20,000 (£16,790) and would last three to five years, which the researchers say is a modest annual cost for most commercial tuna fishing operations.
They are now encouraging fishers who experience high shark and ray bycatch, as well as retail companies who want to improve the sustainability of their supply chain, to seek contact with Fishtek Marine early as sea trials and engineering developments are planned for commercialisation.” -via Good News Network, 11/23/22

Things that make my day:
- A teams call when you get noticed by your bosses boss as a good teacher(thanks mom!)
- hearing a little voice asking for ice cream on another call, then hearing everybody else laugh, causing a needed reset.
After yesterday and Monday, this was needed.

Why Commercial Fishing May Experience Major Growth by 2027
The market can be hard to predict. In the world of commercial fishing, the demand worldwide for seafood is always there, but much like the tides, revenues can rise and fall. While recent years have presented economic challenges and opportunities related to the pandemic, our emergence from the long shadow of COVID-19 may mean big things are on the horizon for the commercial and industrial fishing industry. Bright Years Ahead for Commercial Fishing Being a commercial fisherman is tough work. With long hours at sea, weathering tough conditions, and navigating dangerous equipment, it is certainly not a career for the faint of heart. If you own your own commercial trapping or fishing business, you are probably spending more time on the water than you are looking at industry forecasts. Fortunately, some organizations specialize in this sort of research. A recent report compiled by Verified Market Research is predicting a period of sustained, incremental growth for the commercial netting and fishing industry in the years 2022 through 2028. In this report, several factors are cited, and a detailed analysis of market competition, consumer demand, and industry trends are provided. The Health Benefits of Seafood One of the main drivers of the predicted growth for the commercial fishing industry may come as a bit of a surprise to seasoned seafarers. The ever-increasing awareness of the health benefits that come from a seafood diet is having a sizable impact on market demand. A widely publicized 2015 study conducted by the University of California concluded that fish oil can reduce the levels of amyloid plaques in the human brain that can cause dementia. This, along with the myriad other health positive of eating seafood, is playing a role in greater commercial fishing revenues. Variety is the Spice of Life As commercial and industrial fishing practices and technologies continue to advance, catches are becoming increasingly maximized and diversified. The Verified Market Research study suggests that the sheer availability of a vast array of fish is also contributing to larger consumer demand. Quite simply, people like having choices, and more choices for seafood means more people are ordering fish at restaurants or buying it at markets and grocery stores. Make Sure Your Permits Are Current To ensure that you are getting the most of your catch in the years to come, you will want to make sure that all of your permits and documentation are in order. Whether you need commercial fish permits for federal or local waters, having the right licensing and endorsements can keep you operating legally and efficiently. At the Commercial Fishing Permits Center, we make it easy to obtain the permits your business needs to thrive. Browse our navigational menu to see the many different easy-to-fill online permit applications we offer. For additional information, contact one of our service representatives today.
