This older Christian guy crossed my facebook feed with some awkward opening statements about "not agreeing with the lifestyle" and it raised a hackle or two in the comments but the rest of his pretty lengthy post was about how angry the shooting made him and how "those people don't hurt anybody." And like, I'm sorry if this sounds cheesy but I think it's more important than ever now to treasure common ground and positively reinforce what people get right rather than harp on their flaws. It does matter when people are trying, when they mean well, and when they see through the bullshit that's poisoned half the country.

the first victim of the colorado springs club q shooting has been identified as trans man daniel davis aston, formerly of tulsa. he had moved to colorado springs and began bartending at club q, where he found community and seemed to be thriving.
that any of my community was murdered on the eve of tdor is awful enough. that a trans sibling was among them is just utterly gutting.
i'm sorry, daniel. i'm sorry we failed you. you deserved to be safe.
as randy says in his tweets, daniel will be remembered as he lived: vibrant and fearless, exquisite and kind.

How many people have to die senseless deaths from gun violence before we enact better gun control laws nationwide? For example, no private citizen needs an assault rifle or 30 round clips, especially when you consider that assault rifles were designed for militaries to be used in times of war to kill people. Aaaaand based on Facebook posts by his mother, the guy who just committed mass murder in a queer nightclub in Colorado Springs is Mormon, or at least came from a Mormon background.
Why am I not surprised? Actually no, how could I be surprised? After all the bigoted rhetoric? After Holland called for more musket fire against queer people? In a church infested with extremists raised from childhood to think that killing is a righteous act when sanctioned by God? How could it possibly come as a surprise that some loser picked up a rifle and actually went for it?

Colorado Springs shooting: What we know so far about the Club Q mass shooting

A gunman opened fire in Club Q, a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, late Saturday, killing five people and wounding at least 18, police said. Here’s what we know so far about the mass shooting. This story will be continually updated as more information comes out.
Where is the shooting?
The shooting happened at Club Q, a gay nightclub, located at 3430 N. Academy Blvd. in Colorado Springs.
How many are dead? And who are the victims?
As of an 8 a.m. Sunday briefing, the Colorado Springs Police Department said five people have died in the Saturday night shooting. The names of the victims have yet to be released.
How many are injured?
Police said at least 18 people have been injured. That number may increase as police said Sunday morning that several people have transported themselves to hospitals for treatment.
Who is the suspect?
Police have identified the suspected shooter as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, saying he allegedly used a long rifle during this mass shooting. Police said the suspect was injured but did not know the extent of his injuries. He was taken into custody and hospitalized.
Is the shooting being investigated as a hate crime?
The shooting took place at a gay nightclub and police say they are investigating it through the “lens” of a hate crime, but that other charges, such as first-degree murder, would be pursued first because they are more severe than a bias-motived crime charge.

A half-thought out eulogy because my heart and my mind is too full.
There's a picture I keep seeing on Twitter[1]. I will include the picture, but I must describe the picture, because in describing it, I re-inscribe it, I trace where it is etched into my soul, sharing the words it has carved into me.
It is of a man. His eyes are closed, face slack in a picture of pure peace. He is shirtless, and his hand is placed in the middle of his chest. You can see his top surgery scars. On his left arm he has a tattoo, a heart with mom inscribed across it and an arrow through it. Beautiful in its cliche. Light streams into the room he is in from a window. He has a small ring on his thumb, and a dangly earring hanging from the ear we can see.
I want to feel what he is feeling in this moment. I think I have felt what he is feeling in this moment, but if you've been there, felt this sense of peace and calm and simplicity, you'll know it's addictive. You'll strive for it. You'll want to feel it again.
In this moment, he is every inch himself. He is here, and he is queer, and he is beautiful. His name is Daniel Davis Aston, and he is frozen in time.
His name is Daniel Davis Aston, and he was shot dead in a mass shooting in Colorado Springs, at age 28, on November 19th, 2022.
When I saw this picture, I typed, "I'm so tired." I'm so tired of mass shootings and of hate. I'm so tried that on the Trans Day of Remembrance, a gunman put another name on the long list of names we already find ourselves trying to commemorate. I struggle to find words to describe the cruelty in this action or exactly how it makes me feel. It's a cold, nauseating thing, buried deep within my chest, perhaps exactly where Mr. Aston has placed his hand in this picture. It's black and slimy and insidious and crawling, no less painful despite the fact that this trauma, both nationwide and in our community in particular, has become commonplace.
The tweet says, referencing the photo, "[W]e will remember him like this: fearless, unashamed, full of life."
And we will.
We will. We will. We will.
But I'm so tired. I'm so tired of remembering.
Why do I get to keep seeing trans death, when all I want is trans life?
To live mine, with dignity and peace.
And to witness the lives of my siblings, smiling and laughing, and crying, but my god, living, living, living.

I woke up to violence in my city. The city I am usually so proud of to call home. I was struck by fear because what if one of my friends was there? I am sad, angry, and sick all at the same time. This needs to end.
