Made some shot glasses with the MSA Ghost skull emblem and spiky vines. Messed up a little and got kind of terrible overspray going on. Didn't mask off high enough nor was careful enough with the airstream direction while sandblasting, so there's some obvious frosting on the insides of three of them, and some less obvious but there-if-you-know-what-to-look-for on a fourth. One each of the big-skull-some-vines and small-skull-more-vines turned out fine.
Made these over a year ago, but didn't photograph them until today.

Amazing Iridised and Dichroic Platter. Fused Glass Project Tutorial
Amazing Iridised and Dichroic Platter. Fused Glass Project Tutorial
In this tutorial, we’ll be making a platter using iridised and dichroic glass. The technique is one I especially love as I’m sure you will. The video tutorial includes the design, materials, and equipment information, as well as cutting the glass with a ring saw, and coldworking including sandblasting, fusing, fire polishing, and slumping. (more…)

blew some of the clay lamp shades yesterday, much bigger than the ones i made in ams!! i had three to practice with, the first one broke because i didnt gather enough glass for the mold, and the last two totally survived :) it took much more glass than i was expecting!!! like 4 gathers, very heavy to work with. i started coldworking them by sawing off the tops, but i have a lot of grinding left to do on the grit wheels another day. not sure if i’ll bring them up to a polish or not.
people at the studio were super curious about them, which was really nice to see! i’ve been thinking lots about how cell-like the structure in the molds looks, it makes me think of these forms like exponentially multiplying and expanding out similar how replicating cells do. it could be really interesting to photograph a number these and create a sort of animation with the pictures that mimics cell growth.

What in this chapter made you think about an economic concept differently than your previous beliefs?
What new questions do you have now about the US economy based on this chapter?
Economics encompasses a lot more than I had ever thought about. Really, I had never put much thought at all into economics. I understood that it had something to do with trade and why people bought things. I had never thought about it also pertaining to things like time usage and prioritizing one thing over another. While reading the first principle of economics in my textbook, it was like a lightbulb went on. I understood what this class was going to be about and what the value of it to me, personally, is.
The choice to go to college was touched on in the 2nd principle. What the text describes is exactly the dilemma I was having and why I waited so long. I knew it would be expensive and a lot of work but that it would improve my life in the long run. But I had never thought in depth about the opportunity cost to what, where, and why.
Reading about marginal cost and the airline seats example, I made connections to the glassblowing work I assist on. My boyfriend makes fish out of glass, mainly those species targeted by fly fishers. When you watch people who are talented glassblowers work, they really make it look easy. But there is a lot going on behind the scenes that can go wrong. It costs him about $500 dollars (depending on species) to make a fish. Lately we have been having trouble annealing because of the clear that we've been melting and pieces have been cracking during coldworking. When an annealed piece of glass cracks that means there is tension that shouldn't be there and once it begins to crack generally it will continue until the piece is nothing but a pile of shards. So a small crack that shows up during coldworking, generally, means ~$500 down the drain.
The silver lining that brings me back to the airline seat example is that from time to time we have been able to save the piece, and actually sell it for more than it would have been originally worth. Most often the tails crack, if he cuts off the part with the crack it will prevent it from spreading. We will pour a cookie (a pad of clear glass dumped on the marver) and make splashes. When you put it all together it becomes a naturalism and adds ~$1000 profit to what the original would have been. So a piece with a small crack is like an empty airplane seat. The money has already been spent for it to be there. The marginal cost of making a cookie and some splashes and putting some more time in is worth it because the end piece covers all the money and time put into it and is still profitable.

I really like the "Adam Smith would have loved uber" case study. The way Uber challenged the existing market and threw their rules back in their faces. I remember hearing about it when it was blowing up and people were realizing how much it would alter the getting people places market.
I don't know that I have any questions about our economy prompted by this first chapter. It is still enough of a foreign concept to me I don't know what questions to ask. Maybe how much impact exactly I can have?

We don’t want to go any further into 2019 without first acknowledging all the wonderful moments from 2018. Without the support from all of you none of this would have been possible!

Mystery Skulls Animated glitter jar, sandblasted with the MSA skull emblem and filled with pink glitter and glow powder in mineral oil.
[Video description: Small glass jar with black plastic screw-top lid, held between thumb and index finger. Size of jar is approximately 3.5cm total height and 1.5cm in diameter. The outer surface is sandblasted with two Mystery Skulls Animated skull emblems, on opposite sides of the jar. The jar is filled with a mix of pink glitter and glow powder suspended in clear mineral oil. First part of the video is a slow turnaround of the jar, showing off the sandblasted parts. The glitter and glow powder has settled to the bottom of the jar.
Second part of the video shows the jar being flipped and twisted around to get the the glitter and glow powder cascading down and swirling around. Third part of the video is the same twirling-about thing but in the dark, to show off the pink glow. End description.]

Week7 - Cold working
Tumblr media
Following the last time work, I did the bottom grinding using finer diamond powders and polishing work with pumice.
Tumblr media
The broken arms were attached with UV glue, and I removed the rest plaster between small gaps on the surface using a brush.
Unbeknownst to me, the small parts on the upper right ear fell apart. I will look and work more carefully next time.
Tumblr media
I made a wide strip using sandblasting in the centre of this glass bauble to hide its scratch.
I wanted to make stripes along the curvature of the glass surface, but I could not. Sandblasting gun tends not really easy to handle.
However, I am satisfied with the result of this glass bauble.
Tumblr media
For this, I used diamond wheel to carve the surface. I wanted to express a part of it such as the rough surface of wild birds' eggs.
Tumblr media
It was delightful to finish all the coldworking tasks that I was aiming for this week. I will do work harder next week.
