I’m a firm believer in the passive and small acts of activism.
You’re actively fighting capitalism by resting and taking a break. You’re actively fighting homophobia by wearing a rainbow pin to signify to others your allyship. You’re actively fighting climate change by air drying your hands after washing them. You’re actively fighting childism by letting a minor talk to you about how they’re doing. You’re actively fighting oppressive systems by simply existing.
There have always been others like you, and there always will be others like you. Your existence is rebellion. As long as you’re alive, conservatives and bigots have lost.
You’re a rebel. You’re a warrior. You’re a fighter. And you don’t even know it.

Jim Brown, the Cleveland Browns fullback who was acclaimed as one of the greatest players in pro football history, and who remained in the public eye as a Hollywood action hero and a civil rights activist, though his name was later tarnished by accusations of violent conduct against women, died on Thursday night at his home in Los Angeles. He was 87.

Adieu to truly great trailblazer Harry Belafonte (1 March 1927 – 25 April 2023), who’s died aged 96. He was a singer (who popularized calypso music in the 50s), actor of stage and screen, outspoken civil rights activist (on close terms with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr) and – as this vintage pin-up amply demonstrates – a raving beauty.

I ran away from home. I ran away from St. Louis, and then I ran away from the U.S.A because of that terror of discrimination, that horrible beast which paralyzes one's very soul and body.

James Baldwin (1924-1987)
"It comes as a great shock around the age of five, or six, or seven, to discover that the country to which you have pledged allegiance along with everyone else has not pledged allegiance to you.”

Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) was a singer and songwriter. Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel in her church, where her father was the minister. At the age of 18, Franklin embarked on a secular career and found mainstream success at Atlantic Records; there was able to release numerous hit songs such as "Respect," (You Make Me Feel) Natural Woman, and "Spanish Harlem." Franklin even integrated gospel music with "Say a Little Prayer. She dominated the music charts throughout the '60s, '70s, and '80s. On a personal note, I was always amazed by how over the many decades she was making music; her voice remained strong and dynamic. She and her music appeared in the film, The Blues Brothers, where she performed the song "Think." Franklin could move from gospel to soul to r&b and other genres and keep that wonderful voice. I always like to mention that Otis Redding loved her cover of his song, Respect" yeah, it was initially his song) She set the standard for women in the soul and r&b genres. Franklin will always be a dynamic and influential singer. Franklin will always be an active and effective singer; family, fans, and colleagues will miss her.
