Recent birds: Cinnamon teal / cerceta canela (Spatula cyanoptera). At Whitewater Draw, Cochise County, Arizona.
The dabblers spend so much time bottoms up, there should be a field guide that’s just tails.

BOTD: Cinnamon Teal
Photo: Doug Greenberg
"While many of our marsh ducks are found from coast to coast, the Cinnamon Teal is strictly western. Unique among our northern dabbling ducks, this teal also has nesting populations in South America. A close relative of Blue-winged Teal (and sometimes hybridizing with it), the Cinnamon Teal has a slightly larger bill, better developed for straining food items out of the water. In some ways this species seems intermediate between Blue-winged Teal and Northern Shoveler."

Next set! Really happy with these ones, felt like I'm leaning less away from trying to be super realistic with them. Also, these guys are just awesome waterfowl! I love them!
Technically the Long-Tailed duck just barreely is found in Virginia but I figured I'd count it since it was so pretty.

The Ruddy Duck has a long, stiff tail that both males and females often hold up out of the water. Females have a dark grey bill year round while males' bills turn blue during breeding season. Compared to all other duck species, Ruddy Ducks lay the largest eggs proportionate their body size.
The Cinnamon Teal is in the genus Spatula, along with the Northern Shoveler and Blue-winged Teal, and has a large, spatula-shaped bill, though it is not so pronounced as the Shoveler's. The male is a rich cinnamon colour with a black and tawny patterned back while the female is mottled brown.

I saw this Cinnamon Teal Duck taking a little break in the tall grass near the visitors center at Farmington Bay. By far one of the most underrated ducks that spends time here in Utah.
