I just noticed a neat thing about this building where the chembarons were holding their meeting.
Tumblr media
If you zoom in you can see each chembaron's sigil with Silco's insignia right above them all. Classic Silco.

Did the chem barons exist during Vander's time? I personally don't think so because how is he supposed to control these powerful businessmen when he himself seemed like a broke bartender. I think Silco's shimmer trade created new jobs other than mining and factory working for topside and some people rose to become chem barons. In Vander's time everyone seemed to be poor, helpless and unorganized. Thoughts? Also topside never felt threatened with the undercity's rise like that? In the real world they would help launch coups and instill a puppet dictator. Was Marcus that good at downplaying their progress? But hoskel did once remark how well they were doing.
Good questions. My thoughts are heavily influenced by my own h/cs to make the world go round when I write for it, but here comes :
I think the Chembarons existed already, and I believe the confusion springs from what "the Lanes" are. They never make it clear. Are the Lanes the whole of Zaun?
I don't think the Lanes = Zaun. I think the Lanes = Vander's (and later Silco's) territory. I think in act I we simply never see the chembarons because they are squatting on their own territory.
After all, Vander is credited for "building" the Lanes, and Silco is implied to have done that with him. You can't "create" Zaun however, but you can create a black market.
Maps of the city show that "the fissures" are huge. Vander is clearly running some sort of business with Benzo. It sounds like extortion or contraband. When the conflict increases, he can fit most of his people into the Last Drop. This is far too few people (and none of them close to the chembarons, who should already be alive and influential at least).
Also, you can't convince me these two cuties needed Silco to uplift them or give them a job :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're clearly ancient, and what lore we have of them seems to indicate they've been in business for a long time.
Also, I don't believe that, if Silco invented the role of chembarons and elevated them to the position, he'd fail to rub it in their face. Yet he only mentions making them richer. I think it's possible he made them more influential too, or even came up with the term "Chembaron", but I doubt these guys weren't already powerful gang leaders with their own districts under their control.
After all we never see the mines, the refineries, the factories, the fisheries... All that wealth creation in Zaun has to be controlled by people. Besides you have Chross here controlling informants and fences, and Finn running a group of assassins... I don't think these sorts of jobs were vacant prior.
Such jobs just don't need shimmer to exist. Shimmer as we see it in the public (outside of Sevika and Silco's use of it), seems to be a party drug.
I feel like Silco is running the Lanes like a real business, and shimmer has made it much richer. Which in turns means Silco invests heavily in the Lanes and probably lets other businesses distribute it (like Babette's parlour).
In act I we are shown a not poor, but very much not wealthy image of the Lanes under Vander. Business is there. It's just not as good as under Silco. I still think Zaunites by and large are poor as fuck compared to Piltover, even under Silco. But we don't see the rest of Zaun, it's very hard to judge. It could also be that the people living under Renni aren't doing as hot as Silco's, for example, and that there are discrepancies between districts (I'm obviously not counting the handful of addicts). The show runners just keep things hazy, crossing their fingers that only little freak tumblrinas will think about it (and they're right)
There's this tendency, in some fandom takes, to make the older characters (Silco, Vander, etc) be the first to do anything, like rise up against Piltover, or use the word Zaun... That's of course a perfectly fine take, but in my mind it just doesn't feel realistic. Even young they are struggling in a well established world, already suffering from Piltie oppression. I don't like the idea that they basically invented crime and rebellion.
Feels like they've invented hot water too. The situation doesn't seem new. By Heimer's account it's been a couple hundred years at least. It'd be fucking depressing if Silco was the first one to rub two revolutionary neurons together.
That's why in my main fic I have Silco and Vander be the inheritors of the previous generation's work against Piltover, the same way Vi, Jinx, arguable Sevika, will be the next generation to his and Vander.
Here's a relevant snippet from F&D, of Silco explaining what went down to Vi. Ahika is his adoptive/step father.
——
'It was a team effort. We were all very close, brothers and sisters against our oppressors. Most of them are dead now, of course. Many before you were even born. With our help, my father freed the mines. He's the one who signed the treaty that moved the refineries down to the Pilt.'
And many, many more improvements whose consequences, so many years later, are so intricate and widespread that Silco can barely explain them. The Undercity of his youth was a slave pit in all but name, a sewer for Piltover's progress machine. It had used people like coal, burnt them up and spat out their broken husks. He can't imagine what the Undercity would have gone on to look like, without the decade long war on Piltover that Ahika had led.
He's the man who taught Silco how to dream and showed him what a free nation of Zaun would be like. Could be like, if they worked hard enough to achieve it.
'All our hard won victories came with a hefty price,' Silco continues, stabbing the air with his cigar. 'But Vander and I decided that if business could be so good down here, then there was no reason not to make it work for us too, us first. Zaunites.'
'The Lanes,' Vi says, nodding. 'You created them together? I used to think it was just Vander.'
'Yes, well, the victor writes history, doesn't he? It was Vander and I, with Benzo and Talia. We built our own network. There's more to the Lanes than meets the eye too, it's a well oiled machine that keeps Zaunite money in Zaunite pockets. It helped rally people to our cause.'
Silco stares back up at the ceiling, blowing smoke into a fat ring.
Everything, always going full circle. All his accomplishments, like rings of smoke.

Assassin Jinx!AU: Relationship with Firelights
Tumblr media
So I've officially started working on an outline for this AU, I'm planning on making each chapter long (although this is subject to change) in order to cover more ground with the story.
For now I'm going to post up ideas here on Tumblr in order to stay motivated and not let my potential ADHD ruin my progress 😂😂
That said, I wanted to cover the relationship Jinx and the Firelights will have in this alternative timeline.
A year after Silco's takeover Powder has exhausted all of her options for safe places to stay until her family turn back up, everyone she's stayed with so far has either ended up dead or taken away by Enforcers (this will play to the plot later) one of the people arrested took their time with Powder to train her in self defence (particularly with a hidden blade), how to hide in plain sight, as well as training her in more advanced levels of parkour.
So after all of this people stopped taking her in because they thought if her as a Jinx, she brought misfortune to anyone who cared for her.
Powder, feeling discouraged, goes to the tower in the show and decides to light the flare hoping Vi will turn up after all this time. But Vi doesn't show, Ekko does and their both so happy because they thought each other was dead. Ekko convinces her to go with him and she does, vowing to not Jinx Ekko.
This is where you'd think everything will be okay but it isn't because Powder now has so much baggage she needs to deal with:
her family are gone and she doesn't know if their dead or not
the friends she's made are either dead or arrested because they were kind to her
some creepy guy she doesn't know is gunning for her
and, her best friend who she's just reunited with now has all these new friends and she doesn't know how to fit in 🥺💔
She tries to not let her insecurities get to her but she's still just a kid and a heavily traumatised one at that. She keeps trying to be useful but keeps getting shut down by the others, after awhile she starts to notice how much Ekko has to deal with and tries to help him by telling the others to make their own decisions but that doesn't go down well.
Ekko tries to keep the peace by asking the others to try and stay patient with Powder because she's gone through a lot, and they try but it's hard when Powder keeps being antagonistic.
After awhile Ekko's own patience starts to wane because of all the pressure he's under and after having to step in to mediate another argument starts laying into Powder, she gets upset and fires back (this is all verbal not physical) and the two are just firing insults back at each other until Ekko shouts...
"No wonder you're family left. I would too if I could!"
This leaves everyone speechless, including Ekko he wants to take back his words but all he can see is Powder tearing up and then start hyperventilating before she just collapses right there in front of everyone.
This freaks everyone out and they start scrambling trying to see if she's okay, Scar steps in gets everyone to back off and carries her back to her room so that she's not overwhelmed when she wakes up. After checking to make sure she's okay, he goes back outside and has to drag Ekko away before he goes into Powder's room to camp her bedside. Scar drags him aside to speak with him about what just happened and advises Ekko to give it a night and wait for Powder to come see him, he then goes to the rest of the Firelights and tells them to leave Powder along (in my mind Scar is the second in command there).
When Powder wakes up she notices she's alone and starts crying quietly, she feels lonely and misses Vi even if she left. It's then and there that Powder decides to leave because she can't stand losing more people she cares about, because she does like these people even if they don't like her, and when night falls sneaks out. As she does she sees everyone gathered for dinner and interacting with Ekko whose laughing at something one of the others said (the Firelights are trying to cheer him up because Ekko's anxious about Powder now possibly hating him) she feels guilty about burdening him as she leaves and decides to just stay on her own.
It isn't until the next day when everyone realises that Powder left.
This is getting a little too long so I'll dot point the rest here:
Ekko at first is beside himself and this freaks his friends out because they've never seen Ekko panic before and have to calm him down enough to not go out searching for her without a plan.
They find a note from her saying that she's leaving and that she won't utter a word about the sanctuary, as well as apologizing for being a handful.
They search for her but have no idea where she could be, it takes several days for her to be found.
Ekko tries to apologise and get her to come back but Powder isn't having any of it and tells him to call her Jinx before running off.
This game of cat and mouse goes on for a month before she promises to leave signs that she's alive but she's not going back.
After this most of their encounters are Jinx pranking them whilst their on patrol (her way of testing their vigilance) and Jinx leaving them intel about Silco and the Chembarons operations.
She basically acts like a tsundre with the Firelights 😂😂😂
The Firelights develop a lot of respect for Jinx because of her commitment to help them and others that need help.
When Jinx has something that Firelights need she'll set off a flare to summon them, Ekko always keeps an eye out for these 👀❤️
Jinx will return to the sanctuary but not until years later.
And that's all I can think of right now, I'll do a separate post covering Ekko and Jinx's relationship as well as an additional post covering Jinx's journey after the sanctuary 🙂

Gilded Jinx Looks Like What I Thought Chembarons Would Look Like.
Tumblr media
Look at her, she looks like an 80s punk pirate queen with bolder coloring than both her gilded and chembaron counterparts, complete with bright makeup (by Victorian standards) and big hair. Zaun is supposed to be set apart from Piltover by the unmistakable creativity and innovation expressed through a loud punk aesthetic that it's inhabitants are meant to embody, at least the younger inhabitants do. The higher up the food chain you go in Zaun, the punk aesthetic filters out with only the Victorian base remaining.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Finn's a bit of the exception but his aesthetic is kind of supposed to coincide with his self-serving nature rather than a reflection of Zaun's culture.)
On one hand you could argue that it's some kind of social commentary where these violent gangleaders are adopting the aesthetic of their oppressors to take on similar roles. But even chembarons that are antagonistic to Piltover, and frankly just hate Piltover for what it's done to them and their families still take on Piltovan aesthetic. If it isn't a straightforward Victorian aesthetic, then it's more of a fusion of modern business clothing and evening wear. This goes for characters like Silco, Renata, and Corina Veraza.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Shout out to Silco for keeping it real and stitching his pants instead of getting new ones.)
Zaun, at least in League, is it's own city-state with its own distinct culture, but so often these leaders don't really embody that (once again maybe social commentary, but that explanation only goes so far). Honestly their designs are so dedicated to Piltover aesthetics sometimes it doesn't even communicate their wealth! The thing most of them are all about! If someone has to be in rags for me to know they're rich they're not doing it right.
The chembarons don't all have to be like that, but it seems like they're usually designed to just look like evil Piltovans. The only unifying part of their design that doesn't borrow from Piltover and makes them distinct is their asymmetrical styling and the fact they all either have scars or body mods to accommodate their disabilities, or both.
Tumblr media
And here's Jinx in her obnoxiously loud outfit ready for the runway! Yeah her money's new, what are you gonna do about it? She's the right mix loud fun 80s mess with her fishnets and and ripped mesh covered in a fancy jacket lined with ermine fur. It would have been so easy to give her hexgem earrings, but no, they're in chemtech green, hooked with actual screws. The coloring alone says to me the designers couldn't let go of Jinx's Zaunite origins because her character defines Zaun as much as Zaun defines her. You'd almost think she was making fun of Piltover if she weren't wearing her look so well, if wasn't so dedicated to playful asymmetry where here shoes are slightly different, her coattails slant in two different style. Her whole look is so customized to be Jinx sans Piltover, it's just so her. The Gilded universe is supposed to be a universe where everybody's living a comfortably ritzy and safe Piltovan lifestyle and Jinx’s missing an arm. The prosthetic looks great!
The chembarons are supposed be a coalition of leaders in Zaun. Sure, they're gangleaders, but a lot of rich people politics is gang politics. At least some of them should understand that to grow past the shadow of Piltover, they need to embrace the strengths of Zaun, not co-opt Piltie patterns. Gilded Jinx's design understands that so well. If you put these pictures in a line up and asked me to find the chembaron, my safest choice would be Jinx.
Tldr: Chembarons in League of Legends and Arcane aren't very distinct from their Piltovan counterparts. The only real difference is their visible disabilities, body mods, and asymmetry (maybe goth vibes too). Gilded Jinx is a great example of what chembarons could be, leaders with loud and eccentric vibes that actually matches the distinct culture of Zaun itself.

I always knew Finn’s “bigger fish” was foreshadowing for *something*.
The comment about it being “one of the things we wanted to connect” suggests that whoever is gunning to be Silco’s replacement may have had a scene in Arcane at some point, maybe a full blown deleted scene or maybe something that got left in the early drafts.
The comment also makes it sound like this is someone who’s already established and well known in Zaun. Basically when Finn said there are bigger fish than Silco he was in fact referring to one specific fish. Sevika mentions to Silco that there will be “others” after she kills Finn possibly meaning she might also be aware of this person?
The person who asked this question was thinking about Urgot and I definitely think that’s a possibility, definitely one of our possible candidates.
I feel like there could be a chance that it might Renata Glasc.
The only reasons I really think this is because Renata has a line with Viktor where she suggests that she partially funded his whole “glorious revolution” bit. That’s just an interesting choice on Riot Games' part to have this new character be such an integral part of the lore for this more established character that’s in Arcane.
I know Renata might be a little too new to end up in Arcane but then why would Riot make her part of an Arcane champion’s lore like that if it isn’t going to lead to something?
Another thought I had was that Arcane began production around 2014-2015 and Ekko was official released to League of Legends in 2015 which isn’t that far off from when they presumably started writing the story of Arcane. It seems like the writers have very close ties to whatever the main League team does with champions so I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that the story is going to feature newer champions, maybe even champions that haven’t been released yet.
I can’t think of any more theories on who this is beyond those two, but I’m sure there are plenty.

Man the instant you notice just how heavily Silco imitates Piltover despite hating them you just don’t stop noticing. He dresses like them. He has an office where Vander had a bar. He runs a company with factories. He has his own enforcers. He poisons Zaun with shimmer. Jinx refers to the Firelights as “street trash”. And whenever his people stand up to him, he doesn’t listen, he defaults to force.
He never wanted the boot off Zaun’s neck, he just wanted to wear it, and thought it would be different because he was Zaunite.

Standoff (Oneshot)
Tumblr media
Summary: There's a deadlock, between you and the reigning Eye of Zaun. Neither dare to acknowledge it amongst the others in-power, and you're more than content to leave lingering glances, coy shared-words and secret desires to yourself... until, you get a message, asking for a meeting at midnight. The Eye knows all too well, that you won't refuse the summons. And you know him well-enough, to know exactly what this summons is about.
Wordcount: 1.5K
Warnings: SFW. Chembaron!Reader, tension, confrontation, unorthodox Zaunite politics mentioned, romance, first-kisses
"I don't think anyone knows me better than you."
"So... what? You think means I care about you?"
Tilting his head, Silco hums in consideration. Such a thought puts you more on-edge than ever, and you subtly step to the side, further from him. The long table, gleaming despite smogged moonlight from above, acts as your only shield...
And you know how ineffective it was. You knew, the moment the Eye of Zaun decided to, the table would amount to a pesky amount of nothing, and the distance between you would close.
You weren't sure what would happen when it did. You're mind, and heart, were both still debating if you wanted to know.
"Care, tolerate..." The man brought his gloves flat onto the surface of the table, but didn't lean closer. Perhaps he waited for you to close the distance, even by such a tiny increment as leaning - if he was, Silco was to wait for a long, long time. You didn't dare to move an inch. "I'm not so blinded by idealism, that I imagine you enjoy the fact you think of me in such few words - or others."
"Maybe I don't think of you."
"Maybe honesty suits you far more than lying."
The scowl you give him doesn't earn a single reaction from him - you chose to think that the muscle twitching at the corner of his mouth as just a trick of moonlight - but you catch Silco's eyes flickering down to the hand you're balling up into a fist. "Maybe," He starts again. "As frustratingly bad you are at lying, you're far more frustrated with speaking the truth. Particularly one you already know to be true."
"There's several truths in this situation, Silco. Let's start with the most important," A brief, sweeping gesture around the environment you've found yourself in, before you say the obvious in a dry tone. "This is hardly a welcoming atmosphere for one of your Chem-Barons."
"I'll make a note for candlelight the next time we meet in the night," Silco assures you, a now-crooked look on thin lips that has something inside of you warming, and twisting. His head follows suit with the theme of slanting, his head tilting, and gaze sliding down to observe your body-language as he speaks in low tones.
"You weren't ordered to come here, if you didn't think you were walking into a welcoming atmosphere."
"I don't follow your orders," You snap back, and Silco shrugs. Conceding to that point, but he offers another, one that you can't so easily refute.
"You didn't have to come. Why did you?"
You don't have to answer that - you said it yourself, you don't follow his orders, and just you came, doesn't mean there's any requirement to stay.
Pivoting sharply, coat snapping with a flourish... it takes you less than five steps to realize that Silco is matching in your strides. Step by step, pace equal, as he slowly, methodically drags his fingers along the surface of the table, nearly tracing the outwardly designs.
They stop, the instant that you do.
"Why did you come?... Don't bother," He says, tone still mild, nearly pleasant, even as he shakes his head, a flash of chipped-white teeth showing when your mouth audibly closes at his dismissal of the lie he spotted building on your lips. "Don't bother, trying to lie. You're amusingly bad at it... and I already have my answer."
"Do you now?" Straightening, you curl your fingers into your hand flat on the table. The urge to tap them in impatience, boredom is strong, but he would easily be able to see your fingers shaking if you did. The Eye of Zaun misses very little, after all.
Raising you chin, you still keep your tone flat, "Don't leave me in suspense, then."
This time, Silco brings both hands flat onto the table, leaning close. The darkness of the room, even contrasted in moonlight in the Chembaron Chamber, leaves him largely coated in shadow...
For a heartbeat, all you can focus on in is dark swirl of red, flamed with intensity, smoldering at his words, "You're too much like myself, you see... we both understand each other too well. The moment the offer was made, the note written and passed from my subordinate to yours, I knew you would end up here," A pause, then he smiles. Smiles... it's something you have you glance away from before that warm, twisting thing inside you spreads throughout. "Just as you knew my offer was genuine-"
"A work-offer, Silco," You say, sharp enough to cut him off, before he says more than you're prepared for. "This is buisness, and it needs to stay buisness. I don't know what this all is-"
"You do know."
"Stop-"
"I'm hardly blind, and it's mutual," Like the cat that tired of the mouse, Silco grew tired with the endless circling of this conversation, of constant denials and knowing smirks. Expression flat, while yours it's open with surprise, shock, even, the Eye continues with a firmness in his voice to punctuate every syllable of his words, "It is mutual. Whether you chose to believe that is up to you, but never have I lied to you... it would be counterproductive to start here, now."
The rationalization is what brings you back. The realization that he's correct - that you know him enough to know he speaks the truth, is enough to make you waver. Enough to make you stop glancing towards the door, enough to make you stop pre-working on erasing this interaction from your mind...
Enough, for just a moment, for you to hope.
But you are still a buisness woman. A Chem-Baroness, smart, tactical, fierce and know all-to-well what the stakes are in this game of Zaun. What Silco's offering isn't just personal - both of you know the impact this will have, not just on the spectrum of relationships, but politics, buisness...
And you know, as much as Silco is looking at you, eyes cracked open enough to tell you that he's willing and wanting to see you as more, that at the end of the day, you are a Baron. And he is King.
"... I don't want to be a pawn for you." You decide, firmly. "Regardless whether our relationship would... continue in the buisness-aspect, I'm not foolish to believe I wouldn't be an piece on the board for you."
Silco hums, while also fixing you with a look of knowing that's becoming increasing familiar, and irritating. "Nor am I foolish enough to think you wouldn't do the same with me. We're of an opportunistic breed, my dear... and I'm sure anyone would enjoy having the Eye in their back-pocket."
"Or in their bed?"
The challange - the coy, almost flirtatious challange - makes his remaining eye widen, to the point it almost rivals the lidless one. Then, your smirk gives him a reason to turn, and take one step along the side of the table.
This time, you don't match it. Don't extend the stalemate any further than it needed to. Allowing him to grow closer, turning to watch his approach, until he's only seats away from you - at his head of the table.
"Depends on where opportunity leads us first," He muses in a murmur that's almost soft - it's enough to make you shudder. Combined with the fact that moonlight is dimmed enough on that side of the room, that all you can see of him is a darker silhouette and a glowing-red gaze, a genuine shiver rolls pleasantly up your spine as he says your name.
That's all he has to say, really. Because the action of his hand, gloved, fingers loose and coaxing in their silent invitation as he raises it towards you, says far more.
The subtle, eager twitch of his fingers when you take your first step, says even more than words ever could. Towards him, not to the door like you had thought you would the moment you walked in here.
"... I'm remaining a Baron. This doesn't change my profession."
"Would never dream of it."
"No interference. Your support is... appreciated, but I can handle myself."
"I have no doubts... I know of your capabilities."
"Then you'll know you're a dead-man walking, if you ever try to use this against me," You say, low and sweetly as you step into the shadows with him. Your hand placed into his, and Silco's fingers curl around your hand - the grip isn't biting, but you know you don't have a prayer of getting free.
You know you don't want to. And Silco smiles, a warming thing, that tells you that he knows to.
Maybe you both know each other too well.
"I know, darling," The purr rumbles - In front of you, echoing around you, and against you, as you're slowly pulled flush against Silco's chest.
It's warm, in comparison to the chill of the grand table of the Chembaron Assembly hall, that pressed into the small of your spine as Silco slowly backs you into it. Caging you to it, both hands beside you... You're made to lean back over the table with every inch he closes, until all that's left is one, single inch between you.
"Believe me," He murmurs, breath hot, and spiced with the remains of his last cigar. "I know."
At that, your eyes flutter half-closed, and you close that pesky inch of distance, to begin to know how it feels to kiss the Eye of Zaun.

Silco wearing a cute sweater reader made for him even when in a chembaron meeting. The only reason he'll ever not is if he thinks he might get blood on it
"What is this?"
Silco held up the sweater. It was made from three different colours of yarn from what he could see. With something that almost looked like his symbol in the middle, but it was lopsided. Several strings are loose along the bottom of it.
You had gone quiet. He then held up the sweater, raising his brow as he gazed at you.
"It's my practice sweater." You finally admit, after a few moments of quiet. Gazing at the sweater and wincing. "Me and Jinx both wanted to try knitting. I wanted to keep it to compare to the next one I do."
He blinked, moving the sweater to his hands. "You put my symbol on your sweater?"
Your hand flew to the back of your neck, rubbing at it. His blue eye narrowed, and you finally spoke again. "It... It's for you. Or was for you. I don't think it matches the rest of your outfits." It most certainly did not. "I don't even think I got your size right."
Silco stared at the sweater. And a heartbeat later, the words slip from his mouth. "I'll check." And he's tugging it over his head. The man isn't even a little shocked to see it fit perfectly, because you had been his partner for years at this point. Of course you knew his size.
You also knew the material he preferred, soft and warm. Though the warmth seems to be threatening to spill out of his chest.
He stood in it, moving over to the mirror. A quick glance up and down. It certainly wasn't his style but he smiled, glancing at you over his shoulder. "I like it." Then he strolled over to you, smiling turning into a smirk. An arm curling around your waist. "I'd like to order a dozen more."
