i keep thinking back to a quote by some architect who was arguing that the most sustainable architecture is the architecture that doesnt get torn down bc we will be (hopefully) constantly finding newer, cheaper, more efficient, ways of being "sustainable" so trying to make the most sustainable building is a moot point. in 5 years it will be outdated & if all it has going for it is "was once a very sustainable building but isnt anymore" well. that isnt much. the point was that the architect was saying that classical/romantic architecture (often considered very beautiful & worth saving which i could get into but that a whole other thing) is sustainable bc of its beauty. bc of the value we put on it. bc we dont want to erase or tear down things we find beautiful or important. i dont really have an end thought but im just musing on the importance of beauty & how aesthetic value can extend itself into material value & also how beauty (infinite) is hoarded by the rich as if it is a finite source. inch resting

#i feel like this could be a thesis but i dont know enough about anuthing to make it more than a post #the whole othr thing i could get into is how classical/romantic architecre is often held up as the most beautiful style #which is very eurocentric.#but also delegitimizes other reasons for wanting to keep a building around #ie historical importance #im just thinking about the endless capitalistic cycle of creating mass produced soulless buildings #from the catalogue homes from the 50s to the white box condos of now #where they get made & sold as New and Modern and Cutting Edge #and then in a few years (when they arent new or modern or cutting edge no one likes them so they get redone/torn down #and often those renos are ALSO souless and just fit more New and Modern and Cutting Edge appliances/architecture #this creates a lack of conse4rvation of “ugly/cheap/poor” buildings which is. again a whole other thing #also what im saying isnt new. and can be applied to many other aspects of capitalism/comsumerism #anyways

My boss "commissioned" me to redraw one of my dad's old military trucks as a Christmas gift. It was my first time working with charcoal and it made me very angry lol

#i did cheat with the classic 'trace a outline on cheap paper then slap it against your canvas to get a light outline' trick #because there was no way i was going to get the proportions right #he really just walked up with a bag of supplies and some money and handed it to me lol #he's a family friend and the idea was very sweet so i felt obligated to try #through many frustrated nights it finally turned out #and my dad adored it so it was worth it #anyways happy new year!!! hope you're all doing good ❤️

Looking at Wish, I just keep thinking of the people who called Frozen a 'lazy movie' because they used really similar face shapes for Anna, Elsa and their mother.

Look at the ice and snow effects in that movie. Listen to the music. Enjoy the comedy. Remember that it isn't even close to the beauty of Disney's best and yet it still remains a work of art.

Now look at Wish as the monkey's paw curls. Hey- at least they use different face shapes.

#the background and character designs are so simplified it could be a tv show on netflix #fitting to call it Wish when that's the name of a scam website that sells subpar products #the songs have no structure and sound like a 13 year old wrote them #the characters are annoying #nothing matters #the main conflict is a mess #the main character is just an entitled brat #it feels rushed and cheap #and then they have the NERVE to reference their classic movies as if this garbage is the same?#they think they can have the magic without the artists who made magic possible #disney branding does not make disney quality #it is an insult to reference snow white especially #from a monumental movie that pioneered animation to something too cheap and cowardly to even try?#and the budget on Wish SHOULD have allowed fot a great movie but where did it go?#This movie would be fine enough as an indie film #to attribute this as Disney is wrong #nothing about Disney is left

You know, I think many people understand the idea that disability can be a social problem, even construct, in that as more visibility man lead to more accommodations and even educate (regardless of accuracy), but not that disability can still disable regardless of society. Many people understand the idea of a social construct so long as there is still a consise understanding of the social construct, with little wriggle room for nuance and discussion.

#disability #disability advocacy #saw a (classic) discussion about eyesite and glasses - how the prevalence of eyeglasses and the availability of glasses...#...means that glasses cannot ever be an aid. however there is so much that viewpoint misses...#...like i agree to an extent - my vision (though i need glasses) is not what disables me and i survive fine without corrected vision HOWEVER #glasses aren't prevalent everywhere. glasses can't fix all vision differences. glasses are a *temporary* fix #so you correctly assess the fact that the way disability is helped and seen can be affected by your environment...#...but you apply it so broadly that you miss the bigger picture...#...consider that for aids it isn't that they're cheap that makes it better...#...but that you still have to pay for the ability to be AT THE BASELINE ABLED PEOPLE ALREADY ARE BY DEFAULT...#...for glasses it isn't that you can get them for $80 instead of $300 but that you still have to pay for baseline sight...#...and that if your visual difference is severe enough glasses cannot correct your vision and you have to pay even MORE #i am not saying that every single glasses-wearer is automatically disabled by default for having eyesite differences...#...again i don't think my eyesight disables me. but that doesn't mean that it can NEVER disable people even WITH glasses #and this is a classic example i guess because so many people nowadays CAN access glasses

Every time I think about how the Colleen Hoover fangirlies get mad when people even suggest that they should try and diversify their portfolios I get really, really sad. Like I don't think you have to read classics or anything and be an elite snob but if you limit yourself to just Colleen Hoover and maybe Sarah J Maas and a few other popular booktok authors, you're missing out on so so much. Even if you just want to find good new releases, keeping up with the book of the month club will give you plenty of options (even if you can't subscribe to them and have to get them from the library). Diversify your portfolio. Read older mass market paperback romances or literally anything else.
