no one can unring this bell
on good days, the creaking hardly bothers him.
'tis simply part of the daily routine to draw from the well of his aether and breathe life into his limbs again upon waking, to close his eyes through the initial panic of being pinned to the bed by dead weight and then the secondary, slower burning one of that dead weight being attached to him.
it took a couple of years, but he got the hang of it eventually. for all the theatrics of his youth, g'raha has discovered a pragmatic streak that runs deep within him.
he'll trade an arm for a settlement, half a leg for a child with eyes the color of lakeland -- he'll barter, give and take and move the pieces he has with lips pressed together and eyes cast to a future that may well lay hundreds of years ahead.
his own body is merely another resource at his disposal. he sits down with stacks upon stacks of books on anatomy to find a way to have the aether penetrate all the way out to this fingertips, not for himself but because the dexterity is needed in order to fight.
lyna smothers him in salves and ointments and he lets her, if only so she can feel needed. there is no need to tell of an itch that goes deeper than skin, not when she frowns in determination and sets his heart to bursting with affection.
on bad days, it does bother him.
those days he lets the sleeves drop a little lower and he stays in the tower if he can, both relieved and sickened at the familiar hum of aether that cocoons him.
relief at knowing he'll be able to move the way he wants. that he'll be able to fool himself into thinking there is nothing wrong with him so long as he doesn't look upon himself and see the tattered remains of his dress branded into the mockery of flesh provided by the tower.
nausea at the calculations that perpetually run in the back of his mind, reminding him of the fact that his body is no longer his. how many ilms of skin does it cost to save a life? what limbs would he trade for the crystalline mean? does he have the right to grieve himself?
it would probably do him well to remember that the tower isn't sentient as such, yet he can never shake the feeling that it hungers for more. some days it feels as though he has placed himself in the maw of a starving beast that is simply waiting for him to grow a little more before its jaws snap shut.
and time is notoriously not on his side.
on the worst days, the creaking is all he hears.
when he's called out on extended business, or another summoning attempt falls flat, or someone dies, or, well --
it's so loud those days. the scrape of rock against rock, slow and relentless. it is inescapable, too, as his chest heaves with every breath he takes and the crystal moves with it, groaning and cracking like a live thing.
the warmth is siphoned first out of his skin and then out of the very air, leaving his teeth chattering and lyna's face engraved with a silent worry that he's scared will grow permanent, and he wants to weep at how the one supposed to protect her ends up hurting her the most.
every swallow is a struggle, every step a fight. the seams of his transformation cracks and bleeds pain until he's half delirious with it, overcome by the need to claw his way out, out, out of his own body and the prison it makes.
it's basic survival instinct after all, to run away from what's killing you. and here he is. walking toward it, sprinting some days, as if he truly can't wait.
he has a thousand things to do and a hundred places to be, and yet all he is capable of is humming under his breath to try and drown out the never ending sound of his own corpse being puppeteered.
a small prize to pay on the grand scale of things but gods.
gods does he long for silence.

To Ease Your Burden
Astarion x gn!Tav/Reader
For you @tripleyeeet my beloved <333
Little disclaimer that I do not suffer from chronic pain so some of these pain descriptions may not be accurate to what it's really like

You’d felt it when you awoke that morning - pain swelling in your joints, like someone had taken a red-hot fire poker and decided to have some fun. You couldn’t hope to continue your journey, not when standing made you dizzy and standing for even a second too long collapsed your knees. No, it was better to stay here and wait it out.
You warned your companions that “waiting it out” could mean days, even weeks, of waiting for your pain to fade enough. They brushed off your concerns for the most part. As you rested, some of them would head out and gather supplies and clear the area of monsters or unsavory types. If the pain worsened come tomorrow, you’d continue to wait here. If it was manageable enough, Halsin or Karlach could carry you to the next campsite. Delays like this meant higher tensions and concerns regarding the tadpoles, but they couldn’t remove them without you.
Astarion “elected” to keep you company while you rested. He stayed by your side, fetching anything you needed with a long sigh or a groan and a dramatic complaint, but he never meant it.
He laid beside you, one hand keeping his book open and the other rested, palm up, in between you. Your hand sat softly on top. The pressure of his hand on top had been too much; this was the best way he could find to keep touching you without hurting you. He read aloud, his voice a soothing balm to your agony. Each character had their own voice - usually an impression of one of your camp-mates. You think he must enjoy mimicking them, or maybe he just likes the way you smile when he goes off-script to make fun of them. (Gale got it the worst.)
You press your hand further into his, trying to be careful so your joints don’t scream at you. He quietens immediately, turning to see if you needed anything. When he got like this, all soft and gentle, his eyes became round and wide, attentive and affectionate. You smiled weakly at him. “Thank you.”
His eyes sharpen again as he smiles. “I’m all too happy to help, my dear.”
“You don’t have to stay…” His brow pinches. “You’re free to go out with the others, explore.”
“If you want time alone, I can leave,” he starts, but you cut him off before that light in his eyes can dim, shadowed by rejection.
“No! No, I like having you here.” You run your thumb alongside his. You can feel his hand twitch, unused to being so close to yours without being able to truly hold it. “I just don’t want you to think you have to stay for my sake.”
His eyes flicker over your face for a moment. Truthfully, he couldn’t bear to see you in so much pain. When you tried standing this morning, you fell to the ground, crying in agony. He’d never felt so awful watching someone else suffer. The worst part was how helpless he felt to stop it. You were writhing in pain, and he couldn’t even touch you for fear of making it worse.
“I want this,” he whispers. “I want to help however I can. Anything to ease your burden.”
He shifts his hand carefully out from under yours so he can prop himself up on his elbow and hover over you. With a barely-there brush of lips, he kisses your forehead. He’s scared to hurt you, especially with something as caring as a kiss. He pulled away to meet your eyes. His were warm with fondness.
“You don’t have to suffer this alone.”
Tears well in the corner of your eyes, heart aching from unbridled joy and love - it wants to burst from you and wrap him up in a hug. You would have, too, if you were certain moving your arms wouldn’t burn like all the fire of the Hells in your body. You thank him again, but it comes out choked up and shaky. He smiles, wrinkles accentuating his mouth as he does.
He pressed another faint kiss to your head. “You’re very welcome, my love.” He lays back down and offers his hand once more as he holds the book up. “Now, come on, it’s just started getting good. I simply must know if Madame Triouse discovers her husband’s affair with the butcher.”

Heey! I hope you're doing well!
You can not imagine how incredibly happy I am to find someone who writes chubby reader fics and not even just in that awful self depreciation way!
Now if you have the time and energy for it may I request something with a chubby reader who has a chronic illness (mine is EDS, so chronic pain and frequent dislocations) but is also a lot stronger than anyone expects, especially from a chubby ill reader?
I am currently super hyped for Baizhu and some of my favourites are Cyno, Childe or Yae Miko. Although any character would be amazing!
long time no post. hope you all are well, and happy baizhu release! and i'm glad to provide, anon. we're just people too that deserve respectful content. as a chronic condition haver but not EDS i will leave everything but the pain and dislocation pretty vague. just not something i personally experience and i don't want to try and act like it's something i do, lol.
shit, you're strong!
characters featured: baizhu, cyno, tartaglia, yae miko
pronouns used: none--second person perspective.
warnings: vague descriptions of pain/limb dislocation, reader picking people up, sparring (tartaglia)
notes: written with a chubby reader in mind. will not really work if you aren't chubby. also, if you like my work, feel free to leave me a tip if you want and are able!
baizhu, being chronically ill himself, will not bat an eyelid at any symptoms. not only is he a doctor, but he gets it. like on a personal, visceral level. he's the guy that will just go "oh dear, let me fix that" as he pops your shoulder back into place. then you pick him up and squeeze him as thanks and the man squeaks and sputters. he never really underestimated you, but he did NOT expect to be picked up like a sack of potatoes. he can't say he doesn't like it, though. also extremely understanding of your pain, and will make accommodations for the both of you to be as comfortable as possible on dates.
cyno might fuss over you a little too much. freaks out at the slightest mutter of "ouch" from you because he loves you. tries to slap a band-aid on you when your leg is clearly in need of resetting and suggests a doctor's visit when you sigh. things like that. to show him you're fine, you pick up a heavy crate he was supposed to check for illegal knowledge capsules and just. lift it over your head. cyno has a conniption. after you show him without a doubt that you're ok, he'll sheepishly admit he's over-worried. he knows you're capable, and now he knows you're strong. he just cares so, so much.
tartaglia is fucking ecstatic when you swipe the backs of his knees and send him flying when you spar. he was always worried about being too rough with you because of the potential of you getting seriously injured, but once you show off your strength he relaxes a lot more. he's still incredibly conscientious of your health, but...you might actually leave training with a bruise or two. also makes it clear to never hesitate to tell him the second something actually hurts. he's the king of making you a sushi roll in a blanket and plopping you down on his lap with a heat pad.
yae miko is a giggling mess when you tell her that people underestimate your strength. she's more astute than most, and despite your condition she is very aware from the start of your abilities. she knows how silly it is to judge based on appearances. on days the pain is extra awful she will bring you a bowl of tofu to share, content to sit with you and while the day away. hm? her duties? oh, please. nothing is more important to her than spending time with her beloved.

Spoilers for Mastiff, the third Beka Cooper book
I hated the Big Reveal that Tunstall was the traitor at the end of Mastiff the first time I read it, I had to put the book down (none too gently) and walk away I was so upset. I felt so betrayed, convinced it was completely out of character, and utterly heartbroken. I felt that way for years and left Mastiff off the list whenever I did a Tortall reread.
I've listened to it twice since, in my last two Tortall rereads. I'm still heartbroken and betrayed, but I'm less convinced it was out of character. I read something Tamora Pierce said once, about how it would have been out of character for the man we met in Terrier, but the events of the intervening years changed him. Tunstall was always a passionate and somewhat impulsive man, but those traits began to sour as he struggled with an aging and disabled body and the difference in status between him and Sabine. He's showing flashes of this bitterness in Bloodhound, to the point that I didn't really question his crotchetiness at the beginning of Mastiff. The Tunstall we met in Terrier wasn't dealing with chronic pain from over a decade of being badly injured on the job, he was in his prime and secure in his masculinity. By Mastiff he is in near constant pain and struggles to do the more physically demanding parts of his job, something that deeply wounds his pride. His ideas about what makes a man come up multiple times, and I think that's more on his mind at this point because he's feeling like less of a man now. His masculinity is also threatened by his certainty that he is not worthy of Sabine, and it's his unwillingness to let go of these ideas about manhood that ultimately lead to him accepting their deal. It could have used polishing, but the character development is definitely there.
I still think Mastiff is one of the weaker installments, but honestly I think that comes from the limitations of the journal format and Tamora Pierce being better with third person narration. Those are difficult problems to tackle, and I like that she chose to tackle them anyway. She was trying to do something new and interesting with both the format and having one of the 'core trio' turn traitor. She was exploring what could make a 'good', beloved, and kind person fall to such a degree, and I do think she was ultimately successful in that portrayal.
I guess Mastiff is included in the rereads for good now. At least I can set Farmer against the heartbreak at the end!
I do have one question though - did Pounce know? Would revealing Tunstall count as interfering?

If there is one thing that I absolutely love about the suitors (for now Arthur and Jack) is how their love for Lucy always comes first before any of their feelings. There is no established rivalry where they engage in all of these weird macho-like conversations of "you'll never be a good MAN for her >:)" or ill intentions behind their beloved words for eachother.
Never forget that Arthur, Quincey, and Jack are friends that fell in love with the same young woman. Their friendship (and love) for eachother might have been in danger of breaking because of feelings of envy, but it never happened.
Now, I'm not saying that an interpretation of the text that says how all of the suitors are engaged in this "sexual rivalry" for Lucy can't be possible. It's that I think it's not properly developed to explain the actual relationship between Arthur, Quincey, and Jack, and what does it mean when Lucy is in the picture as a single young woman, then as Arthur's fiance.
It's a non required "rivalry" that is mostly based on the feelings of the characters, and not their actions. Moreover, said feelings are never weaponized to create any drama between the suitors. Because this novel has more defined priorities in their narrative like Lucy's mysterious illness or Mina's travel to find Jonathan than take time off these events to give time to a stereotypical macho gentleman fight between the suitors.
Why would I, the reader, care about a supposed masculine powered Arthur + Jack + Quincey rivalry when Lucy is in danger of dying before my very eyes?
Of course Jack feels sad after such rejection when he was in a depressive spiral, of course Quincey could sound a little bitter because Arthur got chosen but not him, and of course Arthur could show a semblance of jelaousy over asking for help from an established romantic rival. However, the Main question would be:
How any of this could ever help Lucy? You know the young lady blessed with their affections who is slowly withering away without any explanation (that they don't know) what so ever? Hell I could go a little bit further and ask, if this supposed rivalry was actually textually real what is the point of it?
Like really, in this gothic horror novel one of our main female characters is suffering so greatly from (in hers, and others' perspective) a slowly choking, and weakening disease that has taken over her without explanation (chronic illness reading right here). Do we actually need to add to Lucy's plate a possible situation where she has to balance a fucking suitors rivalry?
"It will be a painful task for you, I know, old friend, but it is for her sake, and I must not hesitate to ask, or you to act."
Arthur even says that whatever complicated feelings that Jack has over the situation must be put aside to help Lucy. Arthur acknowledges how his help is not enough at this point, and that both him and Jack should focus on what is happening to Lucy the person, and not Lucy the mask of the perfect possible bride.

Hi! What type of books do you like? And do you have recommendations?
i'm a big fantasy girl, and i also like historical fiction!
as far as recommendations, these are some of my favorites:
the bone houses by emily lloyd-jones: one of my favorite books of ALL TIME. an absolutely beautiful book set in a fantasy world that features a respectful and realistic portrayal of chronic pain, no love triangles, a GORGEOUS commentary on love and families, casual queer acceptance, and a zombie goat (bone goat, my beloved). PLEASE everyone read this book!!
howl's moving castle is the book i wrote my senior honors thesis paper on, and i still reread it pretty regularly! it's the kind of book that just gets better with each reread.
the bear and the nightingale series by katherine arden: i reread this series probably at least once a year. INCREDIBLE series. no love triangles, protagonist who comes to realize that there's lots of different types of strength including women who DO take traditional roles, some BOMB commentary on organized religion ("be careful, father, that God doesn't speak in a voice of your own making" lives in my head RENT FREE), really cool use of russian folklore, and a FANTASTIC example of writing a series that has a love interest in which the love interest is PART of a character's journey and not the sum total while still being beautiful and ship-able. also i'm a horsegirl at heart, and the relationship between the protag (vasya) and her horse (solovey) makes my heart so happy.
the lady sherlock series by sherry thomas: SHERRY THOMAS'S PORTRAYAL OF AUTISM, MY BELOVED. a fem!sherlock series set in victorian england with an autistic main character who is not infantalized, is intelligent and loved by other characters exactly as she is, and who gets a romance that is so well-written and again, not her primary plot. also TONS of casual queerness. lady sherlock series MY BELOVED. i read each book in this series AS SOON as it comes out.
garden spells by sarah addison allen: i'm from the south, and this book makes me feel so warm and fuzzy. it's modern age but with magic, and it's about the waverly family that has magic like hairstyling magic, food magic, and knowing what someone will need at some random point in the future. a GREAT book about family bonds and one of the best books that meshes modern era with magic that i've ever read. i've read this book at least five times.
fly by night by frances hardinge: this book is for a younger ya audience, but it's SO GOOD. i always have a weakness for found family, and the writing of this book is absolutely PERFECT. i LOVE this author's voice, and you will love every single character in this book. (especially saracen the attack goose). PLEASE everyone read this book. i'm about due for my twice annual reread.
tess of the road by rachel hartman: tw for sexual assault (not evident at first and not graphic but is present later in the narrative when she talks about what happened), but this book is BEAUTIFUL and made me cry in the BEST way. features a character going on a classic adventure quest who learns about herself and is given the opportunity to heal from what she's trying to run from. is FULL of gorgeous quotes that i just want to put all over my walls.
pretty much anything by lisa see: lisa see focuses on historical fiction in china and korea, and her books are full of wonderfully complex female characters. i can't speak to historical accuracy, though, so if someone can, please chime in! if i had to pick one, i think island of sea women is my favorite by her!
chitra banerjee divakaruni: she has been one of my favorite authors since high school. she focuses on historical fiction and fantasy in india and with characters who immigrate from india to america. i'm pretty sure i own every single one of her books, and i've reread her arranged marriages anthology and the mistress of spices repeatedly. she is SO great at world building, and i appreciate that she also covers "everyday" characters and treats them as just as important as characters from legends.
i've just recently gotten into kate quinn and have really enjoyed her so far! my favorite of hers from what i've read thus far has been the diamond eye, which is about mila pavlichenko, the deadliest female sniper in history. the huntress (about one of the "night witches" in wwii) is also good!
i'm also a big cultural anthropology focusing on food history nerd, and i LOVE laura shapiro's books as well as taste by kate coloquhoun (a history of britain told through its food). i also really liked greedy queen by annie grey, which is a biography of queen victoria told via food.
okay i'll stop now, but that's an overview of some of my absolute favorites!

Crow!
I have a question...questions? Request? Maybe a little bit of both...?
I am a (relative) newcomer to the fandom, I've been hyper-focused on Ghost for the last year and my heart's completely, irreparably and quite blissfully gone on all of the Era IV Ghouls (Phantom and Aurora included), but, in particular, on our beloved Earth Ghoul Mountain (Mmmmmountain...💕)
HOWEVER, recently, I've begun trying to learn more about the previous era's Ghouls, and although I already have a growing appreciation for Omega, there's another that I find myself circling back to again and again and again...
...Zephyr.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a distressingly small amount of information on him in terms of HC's and fandom lore which really does make it harder to get a feel for his character and personality, so, I was wondering if you could help with that.
How do you see him in your head?
What is he like?
Who is he to you?
Please help me add a tenth Ghoul to the nine I already love...
hi, welcome!
ive got lots of headcanons about them so i'd love to go through some of those for you. i'll drop some great zephyr photos first and then we'll continue under the cut :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
firstly, i cant tell you where the name zephyr originated. maybe fanfiction or other fan circles. zephyr is more commonly known as "chAir", because they were almost always sitting down to play. sort of like cowbell is named after the instrument he appeared for two seconds to play lmao
you'll notice i use they/them pronouns for zeph. thats something i picked up from @gayrickgrimes when i first started interacting more with ghost fanfic. but lots of people also use he/him. not sure why nonbinary zeph has really stuck with me since then, but i quite enjoy it!
i would say the most commonly shared headcanons about zephyr are as follows:
older in age, like omega or alpha often are portrayed
has chronic back and/or joint pain (there's lots of clips of them walking off stage holding their back, thus the headcanon)
has light or white hair, commonly portrayed as longish and wavy.
reserved. maybe a little "old mannish" at times. less spontaneous than other ghouls.
however! they like groovin' on stage. can be seen doing some wiggles during their keytar solo or jamming out on their stool.
some artistic portrayals i love are @endopyre's, @turbodrawn's, and @kamonart's :3 also for a portrayal that doesnt necessarily fit those 'common' appearance hc's above is @joeynihil's zeph, whom i LOVEEE.
i also love @divine-misfortune's depictions of them, but i have indeed given void the zephyr brainrot soooo....oopsies sorry not sorry.
so, now onto the things i specifically headcanon about zephyr. i dont know if youve read any of my ficlets with them yet, but i do have a few! generally, i hc pretty similar to the above bullet points. some other thoughts i have are as follows:
i think zeph has a more antiquated way of speaking. doesnt use a lot of slang or 'modern' words. is very precise, refined in the way that they speak.
very amicable with and well-loved by their pack (aether, ifrit, dew, mountain).
has an 'air' about them, if you will (pardon the pun haha). some may say its too much like they're looking down their nose at you, but i think they're clever, smooth, and teasing in equal measure. has a way with words, in more ways than one.
they really do like to have fun on stage, and i think they like to 'let loose' a little bit that way. that ghoul can groove and move when they want to! and i do enjoy watching ritual footage of them, would recommend <3
not sure if you're interested in unglamoured hc's, but i think they turn very gangly, resembling something like a vulture or other long-legged birds. taloned feet and hands. hocked legs. feathers sticking out behind their ears and tattered, crooked wings. bright eyes that glow in the dark and can see for miles. razor sharp teeth. literally terrifying if you catch them peering at you from high in the trees.
likes when the others offer to help with their back pains. ifrit with his warm hands. aether with his quintessence. maybe mountain with weed or dew taking them to the lake to take some weight of their joints. always very kind, thankful in return.
i think the abbey has a chapel with an organ that zeph likes to play. i think that's what they learned on originally, and transferred that knowledge to the keyboard. when they retired from the band they still enjoyed playing for midnight mass or special occasions.
lastly, i think zeph is a quiet dom. very controlled of a ghoul in normal situations, but very good at controlling and directing others. has a silver tongue and can absolutely take mountain down to studs with just words. i have many feelings about mountzeph in general, and how their dynamic works, which ive explored a little bit. but in general, i think zeph likes to have that control, either because they have pain that doesnt allow them the freedom to explore certain pleasures, and/or because thats what they like. its natural and fun for them. and its certainly fun for everyone else involved lmao. i just think of them as a very elegant ghoul in all aspects of their life.
all in all, im very fond of zephyr as a character, at least how i see them in my head and how i've seen them portrayed by others thus far! hopefully that can serve as some inspiration for you in 'getting to know' this air ghoul :3

Ever After High reboot ideas
More openly queer characters (queer characters in hetero passing relationships, queerplatonic relationships, aspec characters, label dropping, roybel characters using they/them or multiple pronouns, characters questioning their identities, neopronouns, and microlabels)
Get rid of Hopper's creepy behavior stealing kisses from princesses (thinking about making him MLM who's actually uninterested in princesses/prefers princes without being creepy about it)
Meeshell Mermaid in a wheelchair with chronic leg pains (maybe selectively mute, too)
Explore the Charming family's abuse further with Daring being the selfless golden child and Darling + Dexter as the rebelling scapegoats
Have Raven be canonically confirmed as asexual and/or aromantic and be more open about not being interested in anyone
Physical appearance of the Good King that isn't just in the books (we need to see more interactions of him with Raven FFS)
Canon neurodivergent characters (not coded, but actually explicit neurodivergent characters, especially including lesser known identities such as BPD, dyslexia, ECT.)
Chase Redford as an actual student of EAH and being Lizzie's cousin/relative
More racial diversity and religious characters (Meeshell as Polynesian, Ginger being Muslim, ECT.)
FOUND FAMILY DYNAMICS! I WANNA SEE UNIQUE FOUND FAMILY DYNAMICS!
The Wonderlandians...that's it because they're mostly perfect as is already
More interactions between the pink squad because they're my beloveds (🌹🐸💘)
Alistair hanging out with/acting more like girls his age more than guys because he grew up being more comfortable with women/girls than boys
Actual character development to side characters, especially love interests (most of the side characters in the original series are either barely ever developed or not at all)
Polyamorous representation that isn't a love triangle full of drama or someone being forced to choose who they love more (literally defeats the point of a polyamorous relationship when this happens)
Crushes that aren't forced as shit (cringey relationships are a given since they're teenagers, but still)
Body diversity in both male and female characters (and not just giving a fat body to a character that eats a lot, but maybe Apple being chubby and Cerise having a more muscular build for example)
Make Helga and Gus Crumb look like they're actually younger than Raven (in the books before I watched the webisodes, I legit thought that they were like toddlers at their youngest lol)
A transfemme, literal ugly duckling character who's got gender dysphoria
More rivalries between characters that are actually developed into the writing of the show (Justine + Duchess as one example)
Cupiosexual omniromantic C. A. Cupid (I need this so bad)
Have Mousecedes King in the series (like Cupid, maybe as a new student from Monster High as well)
Gradual friends-to-lovers or rivals-to-friends-to-lovers dynamics
More development between the boys having personal relationships with each other that isn't just Daring and Dexter
More M/F friendships that are strictly platonic (even including hetero characters in these friendships)
Queer characters who are in denial of their sexuality that isn't just Apple (I'm personally thinking Hopper and Alistair would fit this role quite interestingly)
Ramona, Cerise, Bunny, and Rosabella having body hair since they're all related to a beast or animal characters
Queer characters standing up against queerphobic people such as their parents or Headmaster Grimm

To love you is to know myself by natcat5

To love you is to know myself
by natcat5
M, 63k, Series, Wangxian
Summary: “I will love you as misfortune loves orphans, as fire loves innocence, and as justice loves to sit and watch everything go wrong.” - Lemony Snicket Kay's comments: So. Back when this story first came out, I actually only started reading it because the summary was a Lemony Snicket quote, which I took as a very good sign and I wasn't disappointed, but also, the tags summed it up well: Wangxian get together sooner (before Wei Wuxian's death), but it fixes nothing. I really love that, because I think Wangxian getting together earlier would solve absolutely nothing and I loved the explorations of it and also, autistic Lan Wangji, my beloved, and also, Lan Wangji suffering chronic pain after the whipping and Mo Xuanyu's body being different to Wei Wuxian's original body and that being something he has to adjust too and I just love that. Part one is the main story, part two is a supplementary story from Wei Wuxian's POV. Excerpt: “Any fight you do now is to survive,” Wangji snarls. “To live to protect those you swore to! The boy you claimed as your own! The home you made!” “They’ll never let us! Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying babbles, sobs. “We must think of a way,” Wangji insists. “For everyone to leave. For everyone to live. Wei Ying, please.” “Lan Zhan!” There is snot smeared across Wei Ying’s face and his eyes are manic, red-rimmed and blurred with tears. “You, poor you, you peerless, you beautiful– you must regret, regret me, regret meeting me, every single day, every–,” “Never.” Tears drip down Wangji’s nose, off his chin. “Knowing Wei Ying, loving Wei Ying, was the best part of this life.” Wei Ying stares. He rips himself away from Wangji’s hands. “You can’t be here!” he wails. “Leave! Get lost!”
pov lan wangji, pov wei wuxian, austistic lan wangji, canon divergence, getting together, character study, introspection, miscommunication, hurt/comfort, thirteen years of wei wuxian's death, canonical character death - wei wuxian, angst with a happy ending, demonic cultivation, chronic illness, chronic pain, disability, recovery, permanent injury

Pick a favorite character for the ask thing
(Ask meme here)
Did you know in my years of doing this ask meme, no one has asked about my beloved Hera? Possibly bc I talk about her so much already. Jokes on everyone, we are doing it again
First impression
I have told this story many times, but I was white knuckling it through the whole podcast terrified that she would get her memories deleted. To be entirely fair that was a rejected season 3 concept.
Impression now
I love her! Favorite AI character of all time. Chronic pain solidarity.
Favorite moment
I have many favorite moments, but what's coming to mind now based on some of my other responses to this prompt is that Hera delivers the only "I love you" aimed at people who are physically present. Minkowski says it in a message to her husband, Eiffel says it in a recording to his daughter, but iirc Hera is the only one to say it live, and it's platonic and to the group, which I Just Think Is Neat. (Iconically aro podcast w359 strikes again.) Also the whole quote is "I love you guys, but you need to get it through your heads that what goes for you doesn't go for me" which really gets back to one of the show's points that love isn't enough. You can genuinely care for someone and want the best for them and still fuck up, still hurt them, still not fully understand what they're going through. But you still have to communicate and you still have to try.
Idea for a story
Currently working on a PGW fic where the crew swings by the Hermes on their way back to Earth to rescue that station's AI and Hera has to work through her feelings about facing someone who was in the same situation as she was but did not come out on top. Rn she is being unfair about it.
Hera’s equally on edge. “The collar program is still running, she might not have that much processing power. But be ready in case she tries something. She’d better not try anything.” “It’s not her fault, is it?” he asks, surprised by the viciousness in her tone. “I beat a collar program.” “Didn’t Dr. Maxwell help you a lot, though?” Hera doesn’t like talking about Dr. Maxwell. “I don’t care,” she says instead. “She shouldn’t have let Dr. Pryce make her hurt them. Just because she couldn’t stop Dr. Pryce from taking her crew away from her doesn’t mean she gets to take mine away from me.”
Unpopular opinion
You mean besides my post that got me vagueblogged about? Here's another one: I don't think Hera would want or enjoy a human/humanoid body. The one time she's limited to a single source of visual input, her response is "it's weird; I don't like it". She's proud of being able to see colors our skull-gelatin can't comprehend, even if she's sorry she can't share them with anyone. She enjoys being a AI mother program when she's on a functioning system like the Sol. Yes she envisions herself as present with the crew in parts of Memoria, and there's an implication she's given herself a humansona, but my interpretation of that was that she wants to be treated as one of them, and unfortunately most of the crew's approach to treating her as a person is trying to treat her like a human. She's not wrong to think they'd relate to her better if she looked like them. (Is that not the same principle the Listeners used?) Maxwell was able to meet with her on her level, but as much as the other crewmembers care about her, they don't understand Hera in the same way. Downloading her into an android body feels like an accommodation for their benefit rather than trying to find a way for her to thrive on her own terms. Smarthouse Hera forever.
(For the record when her VA was asked if Hera would like being human her response was 'she'd try it for a day to see what it's like but she wouldn't want to stay that way'. Seems reasonable to me.)
Favorite relationship
As most followers know I am very fond of her (non-romantic!!) friendship with Eiffel. They've got a lot in common! They fuck up with each other but then do better! They were both sent up there knowing they were disposable and then decide to care about each other on purpose. However most followers also know that in my last few relistens I've been thinking a lot about her overlaps with Lovelace - how they are both surveillance tools that entities use to try to hurt other people, and they both overcome that. Hera is extending non-human solidarity but she wants to be recognized as a non-human person and Lovelace would really prefer to be viewed as human, thanks. There's tension there.
Favorite headcanon
I've posted before that I think she retains some of Pryce and Eiffel's memories which has funny, sad, and interesting implications. Among these I think she kept override codes Pryce can use on AIs so she can fight that kind of thing off in the future, and something that will come up in that Hermes fic is her deciding whether she's willing to use those on someone else. Stay tuned.
