I (Jon) make them myself.

The process is pretty simple; on the morning of release, I'm usually doing a final listen-through to the episode in order to check the transcript. This often involves spotting something out of place in a scene and diving back in to try and fix it, panicked delays of several hours, etc.

Once that's all done, I realise I've forgotten to create the key art and I chaos ensues as I try to figure out which key moment or implication from the episode would make for a good teaser.

Then I head to a stock photo site and grab what I need, creating a composite, usually lightening the background while darkening a separate foreground figure to make it pop.

After that I worship before the altar of paint.net's 'Ink Sketch' filter in order to instantly create a simple illustrated effect and that's pretty much it!

First off thank you for the perfect reason to post this sketch!

I cannot even begin to imagine the terrors they rain on the general public tbh. Between Crowley still feeling jilted and Hanna feeling free for the first time, the limit is really their imaginations (of which they both posses quite a fair bit).

In fairness since this little au I'm simmering takes place pretty soon after the end of s2, they probably don't do a lot of REALLY outlandish stuff for a while. They'll stay local, probably spend time with Nina and Maggie and probably end up meeting the Them at some point. Crowley would also probably want to try and keep inconspicuous (hah) with heaven and hell looming over their heads and now with a squishy thing to protect. I LOVE the garden center chaos idea btw, shoutout anon, and Crowley's little pseudo Eden is definitely going to rapidly expand into a vibrant and terrified indoor oasis (skylights included). Shops in general are going to have to watch their backs (Crowley has a reason to go into many of them quite frequently now, and without his celestial counterpart to keep him from goofing off too much). Hanna is a big fan of the classic "run down the aisles of a toy store and rapidly push every single button you find" method of spreading foment.

Since Hanna hasn't had an opportunity to see/experience most of the world, I imagine they spend a LOT of time popping through museums/zoos/aquariums/etc. Crowley pointing out things he caused, things an... old friend caused, things that actually happened way differently but got recorded wrong. Hanna dragging her dad around and both of them getting WAY too into reading the information plaques for all the animals. Then seeing which animals freak tf out if her dad flashes his eyes. (The giftshops get terrorized if there arent enough fungus-themed objects, although there is always miraculously at least one). They probably break into a lot/if not most of the exhibits after hours to take selfies for Crowley's rapidly growing photo album. Hanna sits at the shark touch tank and loudly proclaims how smooth they are. And since im a sucker for I-Want-To-Share-The-Stars Crowley, they probably pop over to an observatory or break into idk, where they keep the telescope on the Canary Islands or something. And he'll tell her what he remembers about the Creation and what it feels like to hold a new star in your hand. Hanna will curl up against Crowley's chest and get lost in his voice and the distant glitter of a world her dad designed. They probably also commit crimes. Not major crimes, mind you, although that's due more to Crowley's occasional sense of "as a parent i probably shouldn't let you" than any unwillingness on Hanna's part. But she'll definitely help him move signs or infiltrate office buildings and other assorted sabotages. She 100% gets her own little version of the Fuck Shit Up Jacket, and whether he likes it or not the Bentley has decided Hanna gets to pick the getaway music.

It doesn't really count as demonic but Crowley DOES keep a bag of spare change and googly eyes for Hanna to glue to things at will while they're out.

But tbh i imagine the most trouble she gets into is if she's left alone with Muriel. Evidently Hanna has her father's talent for tempting angels into misbehaving or at least into not noticing that they are, in fact, misbehaving in the human sense. Crowley usually feels almost bad for the baby angel but, needs must. and sometimes he needs a babysitter. The rule is SUPPOSED to be that if Hanna is with Muriel, they DO. NOT. LEAVE. the bookshop (they always leave the bookshop).

At one point she meets a boy named Kian at a pub called the New Inn. Crowley very desperately wants her to not want to spend time with Kian for reasons he refuses to explain 💕

At any rate if anyone ever wants to write or draw anything with Hanna they're more than welcome to and also I'll probably cry a lot so Cheers! Thank you for the ask (apologies for my signature long-winded answer)!

Randomly stumbling into painting again because I was in a crunch-mental place and realizing "oh this is exactly what I Need As A Person" is objectively hilarious.

I needed SOMETHING TO DO and stumbled into the Thing That Works Better Than Anything Else.

Alright, universe, I respect your chaos (laugh)

Process ramble beneath the cut.

I'm using an inexpensive gouache set on an inexpensive mixed-media sketchbook using fairly cheap brushes. I have a light setup from B&H Photo to help provide somewhat-sunlight at night (when I do my work) and a cheap mahl stick (basically a long stick you can use as a hand rest to help precision).

I've kept my cartoony-style from illustrating, painting is helping refine it.

I thought a million times "ah bones this is the end, I've messed up a brush stroke" but you just blend. Wait until the base dries (gouache takes a handful of minutes) and paint over it and keep going.

Sometimes a bit of water helps, sometimes it hurts, sometimes you need to give it a few hours to dry more. Sometimes you need to add a bit more detail into another section to match the new thing.

You just keep tinkering. Study, problem solve, paint new layer, keep going.

Paint back-to-front to start with, holding a brush towards the back tip (so lots of space between your hand and the bristles), and basically batting at the paper like a cat. Bat-bat-bat-bat. Mix up the colors a bit.

Getting the consistency of gouache and water right is tricky and is still a learning process. Too wet, it splits into areas I don't want it to go. Too dry, it is hard to brush on.

Sometimes too wet or dry for conventional detail is exactly the right effect. This is going to take practice.

My favorite brush is a brush with a long set of bristles and is itself very small and thin, round. Easy to get details in. I find myself straying away from flat brushes. Filbert brushes (flat + rounded edges) work well in surprising ways.

I'm working fairly small (these are about 3.5" x 10" // 8.89cm x 25.4cm). It's a comfortable size. I was working smaller, so soon it will be time to try bigger pieces, to see what is the best size.

I call these "painting studies" because they are on sketchbook paper that buckles a bit and is general-use mixed media.

Once I get more of a feel for things I'll move onto watercolor or similar paper -- something that can handle the wetness better.

I meant to take process photos while I was going (I'll do that more with Ghosts) but

kept getting

too excited

watching it come together laugh

I sketched and began painting this Friday evening and finished it about 24 hours later, with maybe 8 - 10 hours work total.

Onwards to the next.

jumping ahead in the timeswap au because i am the captain personally i headcanon jack not making it to 20. i think life had well and truly defeated him and he was too tired to keep running, and he ended up hanged for ross's murder.

side tangent a) imagine the emotional devastation the VDLs in modern era would feel reading that. there's a grainy photo/sketch and they can almost tell what jack looks like, how much he looks like john, how old he already looks at 19, and then there's the noose sitting on his shoulders waiting for the trapdoor to be pulled. the article portrays ross as a poor elderly man of honor killed by jack marston, outlaw, a dangerous sociopath

side tangent b) john and jack being reunited. john really struggling not to be angry because he wanted/expected so much better for jack: knowing he was never an ideal father (or even a good father) but how much he didn't want his son to be like him, how clear he had been to never become an outlaw. then, the grief. it's only been 3 years but being able to see how much those three years have changed jack, physically and mentally, just by the way he carries himself and that dead, destroyed look in his eyes. jack struggling not to be angry for a lot of the same reasons because at 16 he was left taking care of abigail as heartbreak and illness killed her, and a ranch they could barely take care of together. jack realising his mom, dad and little sister got to play happy family in current day without him.

well now that that's out of the way: dues-ex-isaac morgan

isaac morgan deciding jack marston is his personal responsibility. sure, the whole recipe of staying in a house for a few weeks slowly learning about the current day slowly works for most VDLs, but isaac understands that not only is jack 19 (a teenager) but the culture shock isn't quite as severe going from 1914 as it was 1899.

isaac throws rocks at the window until jack sneaks out his first night in modern day. he forces a helmet onto his head and gives a vague warning that 'it's going to be faster than a horse', before setting off at very illegal speeds on his motorbike

jack immediately loves it. it's very much what he needed: the adrenaline, feeling like he's rebelling, seeing the chrome and crowds of city as a blur become more and more recognizable in outdated suburbs until they're pushing 100mph on the highway

isaac strategically takes him out to the desert, because the desert really hasn't changed that much, and pulls out a bottle of whiskey. they lay down and trauma-bond about how fucked their lives have been (isaac, who experienced the timewarp like a child moving house and had to teach things to his 19th century mother, jack, who grew up in the chaos of the VDL gang with his mother as the only constant: deadbeat dads taken to the metaphorical extreme).

'there's only two things you really need to know: you can't buy alcohol until you're 21 and cigarettes are actually really bad for you' 'cigarettes are BAD??????'

isaac introduces him to cliche teenage emo music through a dodgy bluetooth speaker. jack marston actually listens to music for the first time

arthur getting a frantic phone call from john saying jack snuck out

charles offering to help track them down, because they immediately know isaac is involved

charles and arthur finding a drunk isaac and jack air guitaring to mcr in the middle of the desert

isaac and jack are instant best friends. instead of the coddling most of the gang do when something is new and initially intimidating, isaac laughs at him and it's honestly more comforting. like yeah, traffic lights take a hot second, but jack does feel dumb for not realising that the changing lights and loud beeping meant it was time to walk/run.

isaac literally doesn't hold his hand unless he has to, meanwhile jack has had months of living alone as an outlaw in 1914. they balance each other out in the worst ways. isaac will say they shouldn't walk through a dark alley and jack is like pfft if someone tries to mug us i can take them

their hangouts go from jack bookworm marston helping isaac study at college to isaac being the one calling his dad because 'heeey we might be in jail' in 3 hours. all parental figures involved are going grey with stress

Here he is. Spider Maul in his simplified chaotic dangling junk heap of glory. May my eyes find peace after staring at reference photos of Maul in his junky spider form haha

All there is left to do is the line art clean up. With how...AHH it is to try to figure how to draw this version of Maul, I am quite happy with myself. (I would never have attempted even a sketch of this Maul a few years ago)

Next up for the coloring book, I plan to work on some 'non-Maul' pages. Like, a sith holocron, crimson dawn, and symbols/images like that :)
