Raven Halfmoon’s (Caddo Nation) stoneware sculptures embrace the monumental. The artist, whose first major solo exhibition, Raven Halfmoon: Flags of Our Mothers, opened on June 25 at The Aldrich Contemporary in Connecticut, situates her work within the canon of Caddo culture and production.
The show encompasses themes of power and Indigenous identity and perspective, and makes space for the stories of Indigenous women.

This grit-tempered vessel is one of three Madison Punctated vessels recovered during excavations at a site near Lake Nokomis, Wisconsin, in 1991. One row of punctates (the dots pressed into the vessel) runs horizontally just below the rim. Below that is another roughly horizontal row of punctates, then pairs of slightly curved diagonal lines of punctates leading to a double row of horizontal punctates. In all, researchers were able to distinguish at least 33 different vessels from the site. Many of the diagnostic artifacts from the excavation, like the Madison Punctated vessels, point to a Late Woodland date for the site, but some artifacts indicated possible occupation during the Archaic or Early/Middle Woodland.
