Carl Locher (Nov. 21, 1851 - 1915) was a Danish marine painter who was one of the earliest Skagen colony artists. He repeatedly did versions of the drama of the rescue service life-boat setting out to save sailors on stranded ships off the West Coast of Jutland. Here is one of them:

Peder Severin Krøyer (1851 – 1909) - Portrait of Carl Locher, 1898

Carl Locher (1851 – 1915) was a masterful Danish painter and etcher. He had a lifelong interest in ships. He was first taught to paint by his father who painted portraits of ships for a living. Locher travelled on several long voyages with the Royal Danish Navy. He was particularly inspired by his voyages to West India and Greenland. In 1872, Locher began studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. He also received lessons from Holger Drachmann. Locher was inspired by the French impressionist painters during a trip to Paris in 1875. Locher became a member of the Skagen art colony on the northern coast of Denmark. He built a studio in Skagen that overlooked the ocean.
