theres a Standard tournament at my lgs in march and i dont think i will win (i know there's one guy who always wins every tournament they have, so if he plays standard, he'll probably win) but oouuugghh i want to!!!!! i built a mock up of my planned deck in Arena and ive been doing pretty well with it on there
i ordered a bunch of the singles i need for it, but cardkingdom didnt have everything i wanted, so my paper deck might be a little different than the Arena one. maybe better?? thatd be cool

Dominaria United Spoilers Part 3 - Personal Picks
This set is going to be one of the biggest ones in recent history for my commander decks. When I first saw Silverback Elder a couple days ago I knew it would be a good fit for Yisan. Right now I feel like it’s just right but for this I might have to make room. It has everything a green deck could possibly need: artifact and enchantment destruction, ramp, and life gain and with how many creatures it has it can definitely be a powerhouse. I was literally refreshing the page on Cardkingdom for this card to be available for preorder so I could get mine as soon as possible. I’m going to have to go through my Yisan deck and hopefully find another five-drop to cut for this because it’s seriously a perfect fit.
Tumblr media
This is another one high on my list. With Dominaria home to a lot of merfolk it’s no surprise we’re getting a card like this. Emperor Mihail II is definitely going into my Kumena deck.
Tumblr media
This one is kind of “meh” for me. I got a few copies just in case for my decks that rely on instants and sorceries but at four CMC I think it might be a little too expensive.
Tumblr media
These ones are for Adeliz (also from Dominaria). Casting sorcery spells at instant speed is good enough but paying two to copy them is pretty much a guarantee I’ll put Najal in. Adeliz feels like the only deck I have that would run this because Kess already has cards that copy instants and sorceries and she’s more of a noncreature deck while Adeliz is focused around wizards. Same with Balmor because cheap instants and sorceries can really add up when combined with Adeliz.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one I got just in case for either Adeliz or Kess. I feel like Adeliz can take advantage of this card the most even though it’s not a wizard because Kess can cast cards from the graveyard and already has cards like Baral and Goblin Electromancer to make instants and sorceries cheaper.  If it drops in price I’ll pick up another copy but so far I feel like I only need one.
Tumblr media
That’s it for DMU. I haven’t been this excited for a set since Strixhaven and I might even go back to FNM to draft it when it comes out.

Casual Casualties: Playing Mindfully
As Shivam Bhatt has said: “Casual is a mindset, not a power level.” This is a wonderful concept for how I, and many others, like to enjoy Commander. There is nothing wrong with going all out and playing the fastest, most powerful cards and combos ever printed, and EDH is one of the best formats to do so. However, EDH also happens to be the best format for the polar opposite. It’s a place where you can play some of the biggest, silliest, and least powerful cards as well. I land much farther on the casual end, but I can play and enjoy either end of the spectrum. As much as I love relaxed and casual Magic, I feel like the there are some important elements of Magic that get muddled into the mix at many tables. Playing casually and playing well are not mutually exclusive, and in this “Casual Casualties” series of blogs, I want to highlight some things I think are still important to every game, regardless of what power level you like to play at.
Playing Mindfully:
Step one of this process is knowing what the cards in your deck do. This isn’t a quick and easy task by any means, but there is a certain amount of responsibility on every player at the table to know, to at least some extent, what cards they are playing. Do you need to know every interaction possible in a 100 card deck? No. There are literally thousands of possible board states in a single deck, and that’s amazing because variety and surprises are one of the most fulfilling parts of EDH. However, you will get the most out of your decks and have the most fun by knowing what your cards do, and having a general idea of what direction your deck is headed when you’re piloting it. This is also a good way to be respectful of everyone else’s time. If you are playing a complicated card, that’s perfectly fine, but knowing how that card functions and being able to explain it to the rest of the table without a 5 minute discussion will speed things up and help everyone move forward and continue having fun.
The best way to do this is simply to read your cards. The internet has streamlined deck building and made Magic as a whole extremely accessible for almost anyone, regardless of how familiar they are with the game. You don’t need to have thousands of cards memorized to be able to build a strong and cohesive deck, and that’s awesome. However, with this convenience comes unfamiliarity with your cards. You can download a decklist, plug it into CardKingdom, and have the cards at your door, sorted and sleeved within a week. To actually play with the deck though, there is a burden of responsibility on you to know what the cards you are using actually do. This will come naturally as you play the deck, but a good way to get a jumpstart on this process is to read the cards. “Reading the card explains the card” as the Professor always says, and as simple as it sounds, it’s a vital part to mindfully playing.
Ok, you’ve read every card in your deck a couple times and shouldn’t top deck any surprises. Step one down, time to play! You’ve sat down with your play group or at your pod, and you’ve got a nice hand of seven and you’re feeling good. You throw down an turn one Essence Warden and just wait for the value. Everyone is building their board states and you can here the *boop boop* sound in your head every time your life total goes up. But as you and everyone else keeps playing cards, the board gets bigger, there are more and more triggers every time something happens, and your poor little Essence Warden gets missed a few times. Things keep happening and all of sudden you’re facing lethal damage. You look down and see your Essence Warden staring you in the face, and remember all at once all of the extra life you should have at this point. It’s too much to reasonably or accurately count, and you know the fairest thing to do is to take the L.
The only person who should have saved you in this situation is you. And that’s where playing mindfully comes in. Doing your best to keep track of your triggers is a really important part of this. Wether it’s a soul sister, a Saga upkeep trigger, the number of cards in your hand, or a Rhystic Study, paying attention to your board will help you feel like you’re getting the most out of your cards, regardless of the power level. A significant amount of feel-bad moments will be mitigated just by knowing what is happening on your board in relation to everyone else’s. As you become more familiar with your cards and how the deck functions as a whole, this gets easier because you will have a better idea of what your deck needs to do to be successful and how important your effects are to that end. This will also help you notice which cards really aren’t doing much for you, and might be on the chopping block for optimizing your deck. Inevitably, you will still miss triggers here and there. Commander gets complicated, and that 1/1 you played on your first turn can definitely get lost in the mix as the game evolves, and that’s ok. Just make sure you are doing your best to keep track of what you’re doing, and it will do wonders for your overall enjoyment of the games you play.
As you get better at paying attention to your board, you will naturally get better at paying attention to everyone else’s board too. While it is not your responsibility to make sure your opponents are playing their cards correctly, it is good sportsmanship and in the spirit of the casual mindset to lend a hand where you can as other people play. Not everyone has the same amount of time to put into the game and become familiar with so many cards. Some people simply may not be able to keep track of information as easily as other people. Some people might be having a rough day and EDH is not the first thing on their mind at the moment. All of these situations are not only ok, but likely to be something you run into here and there. If you see something, say something. If you notice someone miss a trigger, forget to draw their card for turn, or anything like that, remind them! A big part of the casual mindset is wanting everyone to have fun, and helping everyone keep track of what’s going on helps everyone get the most out of the time you are sharing. It’s hard to be salty toward a player who did everything they could to help you play effectively, and if everyone is looking out for each other, the experience will generally be more positive.
There are probably twenty other topics to include in the realm of playing mindfully, but these are just some thoughts I wanted to put down, and part one of what I assume will be a few of this particular series of blogs. Feel free to share any other ideas you have about playing mindfully, and playing casually in general!

Note
I'm aware this is similar to the recent post, but I can't figure out how to start mine. Or draw digitally well. What do you recommend on ways to start or draw the comic? Should I do it with colored pencils/crayons/pastels/markers? Or figure out how to do it digitally? Please help
I think the first step is to figure out how you want your comic to look! Do you want it to look hand-drawn or digital? A mix of the two? Do you want to include other media, like painting or animation or photography, or something more unconventional? Do you want to make it look inspired by someone else’s style, or something no one has seen before? Once you figure out how you want it to look, then consider what you can do to achieve that look and then work towards that.
If you’re not sure about what style you’re going for, then experiment! Draw your characters in whatever mediums you’re considering. Do a couple of test panels. Get some feedback if you like, but remember that ultimately the decision is yours to make. I would recommend that whatever processes you use, you are able to replicate them fairly reliably and without too much stress. But at the same time, when you draw something enough times you develop your own methods and shortcuts and you get into a rhythm with it. You just gotta be patient and push through.
What I recommend is for you to do what you’re passionate about and most interested in, even if it means learning something new. Whatever you want to do, have faith in yourself that you’ll make it work and that, through continued practice and working hard, you’ll improve your skills and be at a place where you want to be artistically!

Strixhaven - A Spellslinger’s Dream
Tumblr media
With Strixhaven previews underway I can officially say I’ve never been this excited for a set in a LONG time.  All I can say is that Kess is going to be getting some MAJOR upgrades with this set and I’m going to be going over some of the cards that stick out to me.
Planeswalkers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First I’m going to share my thoughts on the new Liliana.  This card is the one I’m most excited for.  It’s like this card was made for my Kess deck.  Magecraft is an ability that fits right in and her plus ability that lets you look at the top three cards in your library and put the rest in your graveyard is great for Kess because of her ability to let you cast instants and sorceries from your graveyard.  Plus she can get rid of big threats on the board with her -3 ability and her ultimate really helps disadvantage your opponents.  I’m not a fan of the new Kasmina though.  When she made her debut in War of the Spark I liked her because of her ability to make Wizard tokens but I can’t find a place for her in any of my decks.  The only Simic-colored deck I have is Kumena Merfolk Tribal but she’s not a Merfolk and it doesn’t have any planeswalkers so she wouldn’t make a good fit.  The new Will/Rowan MDFC is interesting.  Their static ability that makes instants and sorceries cost one less is helpful but I’m on the fence about their abilities though.  Rowan’s ultimate that copies instants and sorceries by paying two when you cast them could be helpful in my Kess EDH deck but I already have a lot of cards that copy them so I’m debating on whether or not to add them to any of my decks.  I picked up two copies from cardkingdom just in case.
Lands
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Mark Rosewater released his teasers for Strixhaven and mentioned a ten-card cycle of dual lands being finished in this set I had my fingers crossed it would be the one from BFZ that come into play untapped if you have two or more basic lands that can can be searched with fetch lands.  At least these ones will give budget alternatives for some decks.  I doubt they’ll see any competitive play.
Magecraft
Tumblr media
Here’s another card I’m excited about.  Right now I have only eight creatures in my Kess EDH deck but I’m going to have to bump it up to nine to add this.  It’s a powerful draw engine for decks like Kess.
Story
Tumblr media
I haven’t kept up with the story since War of the Spark but I might have to read Strixhaven after seeing this card.  I’m curious to what causes Liliana to confront what happened on Ravnica and Gideon sacrificing himself for her.  Maybe it had something with her changing into Professor Onyx.  I want to know if it’s her alter ego or if Professor Onyx is her alias to keep the people hunting her for aligning herself with Nicol Bolas.  Like I said I haven’t read Foresaken yet so I don’t know what’s happening with that whole thing.  I might pick it up after I finish the Percy Jackson series.
On a side note I like the Learn/Lesson mechanic.  It’s good in limited when you can pick up as many Lessons as you want and put them in your sideboard but for constructed I don’t see it being as good.  I can definitely see Saffron Olive doing an Against The Odds with them.
Mystical Archive
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all what everyone is talking about: the artwork for Faithless Looting.  The artwork for most of these are amazing but this is not one of them.  It seriously looks like a bad collage made in MS Paint.  I don’t know if it’s just me but I find it hard to get the “looting” from the picture.  I can’t wait for these cards to be available in Arena for Historic.  The one I’m looking forward to most is Grapeshot for Storm shenanigans.  With Aetherflux Reservoir in Historic I have a similar deck but with Grapeshot it’ll be so much more fun.  I can’t wait for Teferi’s Protection as well because it’s a commander staple and hopefully the price will go down a little.  I also love how Approach of the Second Sun is included even though I’ll always love the original because Amonkhet is one of my favorite planes.
I seriously can’t wait for this set to come out and I already ordered the cards I want like Professor Onyx.  I even ordered eight (yes EIGHT) copies of Prismari Command for my various Izzet decks.  I mean they’re going for $2.99 on cardkingdom so how could I pass them up?  The way I see it it’s better to have too many than too little if it goes up in price.  Eight should be enough.  I plan to get a box from my LGS because I’m so excited.
