i'm (hopefully) at home recovering from a minor heart procedure earlier this week but there's a new show set to air on wlur at 8pm tonight with two hours of (mostly broken) heart related songs. last week's show is also streaming on mixcloud and will air at 10pm tonight after the new show.

This is such a tricky one, since they all probably have such varied music tastes and favourite songs (they’re just like us! lmao), but I’ve tried coming up with suggestions at least! I had a lot of fun with these and tried to give them all a disctinct taste as well, hope you approve 💋

Bobby

Bobby probably has an... interesting music taste. Punk, pop and rap, anything energetic. We know he used to be in a punk band and that he likes Cardi B, and I can so see him having had a SUM 41/Good Charlotte/Blink 182 phase in the 00s. These days he’s also a big fan of Megan Thee Stallion of course, and I think his current favourite song reflects that.

Carl

I can see him listening mostly to music without lyrics, as he finds that quite distracting to listen to while working. Lo-fi, edm, and similar is good, but he also enjoys alt-J and gorillaz.

Hannah’s taste in music is mostly limited to whatever they play on Radio 4 and certain mainstream artists (Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, Ellie Goulding come to mind). Anything calm, safe and seemingly deep™ is her jam, and she’ll be as painfully awkward about analysing lyrics as she is with books.

Anything witchy and that gives those spooky, black magic vibes, like Devil’s Witches, Blackwater Holylight, Green Lung... and Stevie Nicks. It’s very on-brand of course and she likes it that way. Secretly, she’s got a soft spot for the same artists as Hannah, but she’d never admit that.

Ohh, he probably genuinely loves slow and sexy songs, and low-key loves a cooking-to-jazz Hannibal-style moment. The Weeknd, ZAYN, FKA Twigs, and Teyana Taylor of course. Does he have a super soft spot for kpop? Yes. Will he admit to that? Never.

Marisol

I feel like it might be a bit stereotypical, but I definitely think she enjoys Spanish/Latin music (think music she can dance to), in addition to artist such as Japanese Breakfast, Sampha, and calm music like that. I have a feeling she likes Spanish music especially, as it reminds her of home.

I have a whole post dedicated to songs that remind me of Noah and that I think he’d enjoy, which you can find here. Basically; 70s and 80s rock/pop is his jam, with some soul in there as well. hello!! hope you're well! just saw ur response to the "properly formed society" comment on the carrier bag theory ursula post, i felt like the way u answered was so gentle but firm and informed. was wondering if u could maybe share some recommendations for texts to read more about this? cos i agree w/ the idea but its hard to find books like that. for example i think yuval's book ultimately has this kind of idea behind it (havent read it but from what ive read OF it, thats the vibe). thank u!!

I’m much more of an article person than a book person because I can only take so much dry jargon filled writing for so long, but I do have some suggestions.

The biggest one is probably Questioning Collapse. For context, Jared Diamond is a man (not an anthropologist) that shares all his theories on how past civilizations, such as the Greenland Norse, or the Rapa Nui, or the Maya, collapsed, in the terribly titled book Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed (yikes). Let's get some things straight though. Jared Diamond proved in his book Guns, Germs, and Steel, that he is a white supremacist who exploited the people of Papua New Guinea and believes that euro imperialism was just , bound to happen because europeans were more "civilized." So it was no surprise when all his favorite themes, that people, especially "uncivilized" ones, are violent and selfish, showed up in Collapse.

Unfortunately, many of these theories have become very popular and many people assume them to be correct when they aren't. Some examples: Diamond posited that the Rapa Nui (Easter Islanders) essentially destroyed their own natural resources which lead to warfare, cannibalism, and eventually their own demise. This ignores the fact that the island was ravaged by european expeditions, which included Fuck Boy Supreme James Cook (of the botched kidnapping and eventual killing by Hawaiians fame). Of course these encounters with Europeans led to the enslaving of the Rapa Nui, as well as the introduction of diseases that had a devastating impact on the population numbers.

Anyways, Questioning Collapse, edited by McAnany and Yoffee, is a collection of essays written by different people in the scientific community to dispute the theories Jared Diamond lays out in his book Collapse.

Ancient Civilizations by Fagan and Scarre, specifically chapter 2 “theories of states”

Another one would probably be Almost Human: A Journey into the World of Baboons written by Shirley C. Strum. I cant quite remember if Strum ever addresses this because it has been a few years since I read it, but: some of the earliest "man is just naturally violent and animalistic" ideas actually come from the surveying of baboon (and other primate) behavior and comparative anthropology. However, this came early in the field of primatology when observation methods weren't pinned down. Long story short, the male baboons that were being observed weren't actually being "naturally" violent--they were agitated and scared because the people observing them were literally observing them from a big ol scary unfamiliar jeep/atv thing that they drove up right next to the baboons' band. That was decades ago, and a lot of changes have been made since to how fieldwork is done. Anyways, Strum was one of the earliest groups of people to go out and observe baboons and she continued to do it for decades. Almost Human is essentially a look at her field notes/diary during the time. I have a couple other primatology book suggestions if you are interested. Here a couple: Gorillas in the Mist or anything else by Dian Fossey. Manipulative Monkeys by Susan Perry.

The next book I recommend is Farmers, Traders, Warriors, and Kings: Female Power and Authority in Northern Igboland, 1900-1960 by Nwando Achebe. From what I remember, Achebe isn't terribly fond of the anthropology field, (which is interesting because much of the book is ethnographic), but what can I say, I personally do not like historians myself so 🤷‍♀️ (also I might be thinking of someone else)

My personal loathing of historians aside, this is a great book that explores the ways in which women... well... navigate power and authority. You get to learn all about Female Kings and how the Igbo do not fit in with eurocentric gender norms--as well as the impact that European colonization eventually has on the Igbo culture and the role women and men play within their families and society.

Whoops I hadn't meant for this blog to go unused for a while. I do have several rough drafts but I wanted my first publication to look nice. But I also don't want to leave this untouched for much longer so here's a headcanon (one of many) that I use in my story Project: New Horizons.

NPCs

Althou PNH is told from my two islands, Natsukashi and Willowisp, I wanted to make situations as 'real' as possible, which includes traveling to other islands. One problem are the repeating NPCs. How is it that Isabelle seems to be on EVERY island ever and also doesn't recognize you?

The only thing I could think of was the whole Nurse Joy/Officer Jenny thing the Pokémon series has going on. So, yes the NPCs do repeat, however each NPC (with an exception of some visitors prob like Gulliver, Gullivarrr, Pascal and others who don't really always show up on islands at the same time as the core NPCs) is their own unique person. Their 'name' Isabelle, Tom Nook, Kicks, Blathers, Daisy Mae ect... is simply a job title of sorts. I also put name in quotation marks because that is not their real name. They do have a real unique name but won't tell the island rep or the villagers. If an island is located in a different country (Europe, Spanish speaking countries, Japan, ect...) the NPC can also take on the regional name. So for example one of Isabelle's regional names is Canela. According to the wiki this is her Spanish name, so in Spanish speaking countries or even an island that has a big Spanish/Hispanic/Latin/Mexican ect... theme, she would have the name of Canela rather than her English name Isabelle.

Althou they may have the same 'name' as that NPC and overall same looks, they can change their outfits up. If you go visit a Japanese themed island, NPCs like Isabelle would wear a kimono, Tom Nook a haori set ect... A cottagecore island would have some of the NPCs wear more cottagecore outfits... whatever those look like. The theme of the island (if it has one) can alter the way the NPCs dress. This however does not apply to ALL NPCs, this is moreso for the ones that remain in the islands. NPCs like Gulliver/varrr, Pascal, Flick, and CJ don't really change their clothes to match the island theme. Plus Flick and CJ already got their own thing going on, I like the way they dress so I'm just gonna leave their outfits untouched. Other NPCs like Daisy Mae, Leif, Kicks, Label and Redd can alter their clothing slightly or go all out with the island theme they are currently visiting.

So, for Natsukashi core NPCs would wear like tourist clothing in the spring/summertime and more fall clothes in the misty months, since Natsukashi is normally set in the fall.

For Willowisp the clothing style is more on the goth, grunge, dark or formal.
