On the Grand Trunk

Here’s an eastbound train on the former Grand Trunk Railway, now Canadian National. The location is at Knight Street, east of Marcellus, Michigan, at milepost 138 (from Chicago). The second locomotive is interesting: a BC Rail GE C44-9WL, which is nearly 28 years old now. There was a DPU of the CN in this train as well.

Wake by Rebecca Hall is so good.

It’s beautiful depiction of Afro futurisms is so hopeful.

The book is also a literal wake, a mourning for the ancestors.

Our superpower is to exist in a world that fights to silence and erase. Black people resist and exist despite the brutality of slavery.

Today I woke up feeling depressed due to burn out and one of my strategies is to imagine and desire a future where I am an elder. I cannot wait to be old and I mourn the queers and the marginalized that cannot imagine their futures. I mourn because they speak and do not fully understand the life they foster.

Losing a friend because this world is cruel and genocidal hurts. It hurts so fucking much but I must not lash out at others just because they cannot see the beauty of life right now. I mourn that they so willingly bar their imagination from futures.

Rebecca Hall wrote how our memories must be longer than our lifetimes. He may be gone but those who love him continue the wake, continue to life for him, remember for him.

I live for the past to see the future. We all do, haunted by the past but able to live on for our ancestors.

I hope one day everyone realizes how it isn’t just in the past. Slavery continues today with police brutality. Genocide continues on Indigenous people. Marginalized people are turned against each other for the benefit of the 1%.

The grift of my life is how I’ve been weaponized as a model minority without my informed consent. I was used as a tool to justify and represent lies of multiculturalism. Of ‘Canadianness’.

Though solidarity can be painful and mournful, I feel I can better see through the barrier assimilation imposed onto my life.

My family does not have the trauma a slavery in our history but we do have mutual suffering of war, colonialism and assimilation.

Asian Canadian. What a joke. My Canadiannes is at the whim of whatever white person perceives me as. Forever a foreigner even though I have no place to go.

It’s a different situation than Black people, but I can empathize as I feel forever out of place.

Solidarity forever as it is better to mourn together.

Rondout, One of Three

Here’s an outbound Metra train on the former Milwaukee Road double-track mainline between Chicago and Milwaukee. After approaching the tower and a crossing with the former EJ&E, the train crosses over to the southbound main and immediately hangs a left onto the branch to Fox Lake.

The bike path spanning the line was once a branch of the North Shore passenger line, to Mundelein. I shot here at the same time last year—the tall signal bridge seen above is new, replacing an older one adorned with searchlights, alas.

Day 9 (part 2): Toronto One must-visit site in Toronto is the CN Tower, and we wanted to make sure to see the city from above at night. We arrived at the perfect time to view the sunset from the top of the tower. The pictures don’t do it justice; it was absolutely breathtaking. The outdoor lookout was windy but offered more great views. Before we took the elevator back down, we braved the glass floor (well, I did at least... Tyler stepped on enthusiastically). The CN Tower is another attraction included in the City Pass so we were able to save on admission prices. The tower has a restaurant similar to the space needle, but the food was a little too spendy for our taste so we opted for food on the ground. The tower from below was lit up with a rainbow display, a perfect view to end our night!
