Late afternoon at the balsam fir swamp in Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
From top: nodding bur-marigold (Bidens cernua), also sometimes referred to as nodding beggarticks, a clumping, wetlands-loving annual whose flowerheads nod as they mature and get heavier; bushy St. John's wort (Hypericum densiflorum), a gorgeous, densely-packed shrub with vibrant yellow flowers and copper-colored bark; white meadowsweet (Spiraea alba), a rapidly-colonizing shrub whose branching clusters of white flowers are one of summer's most generous gifts; narrow-leaved gentian (Gentiana linearis), a tall, elegant bottle gentian that can only be pollinated by bumblebees strong enough to pry open (or chew through) its closed petals; flat-topped white aster (Doellingeria umbellata), also known as parasol whitetop, a tall, attractive mountain aster with flat, branching clusters of white flowers; and the dainty white flowers of virgin's bower (Clematis virginiana), a vigorous, twining vine that forms beautiful, dense waves of foliage and flowers.

Tucked in to a high valley of the Allegheny Mountains, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in West Virginia preserves almost 17,000 acres of forest and wetlands. The valley’s high elevation and position create a cool, moist climate more typical in Maine and Canada. The Blackwater River meanders through this rugged and gorgeous landscape, supporting an impressive variety of wildlife. Thinking of the gentle noise of the river and the whisper of breezes in the trees, we stare at this pink sunrise and dream of summer. Photo by Frank Ceravalo, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Seek Out The Best Coffee Shops Near Me At The Monongahela National Forest
Do you know that a portion of heaven lies quite close to you? No, you don’t have to embrace death to get a glimpse of it. Pry out some information on Davis, a small town in West Virginia, and its surrounding locations. The holiday season is still going on but will not last much longer. You have to pack your bags and start on a remarkable and awe-inspiring journey to a place that will not be too far from your home. Check out the unnervingly beautiful Canaan Valley and the Blackwater Falls State Park. Also, visit the Monongahela National Forest and enjoy its tranquil atmosphere.
Tumblr media
1.   The Seneca Rocks: It is a striking rock formation which rises about nine hundred feet above a fork of the river Potomac. The Seneca Rocks is one of the most recognizable and visited natural features of the state. Being in such a secluded location doesn’t mean that you will not be getting your early morning dose of coffee. Search for the best coffee shops near me, and you will find one, from where you can also order products online via trailheadcoffeeshop.com. The coffee roasts and blends at this shop are unlike anything you ever tasted.
2.   The Blackwater Falls State Park: The Blackwater Falls tumble down and fall into a gorge lined by hickory, red spruce, and hemlock trees. Several hiking trails are stretching for about twenty-four miles. Hiking through these trails in an adventurous option, and when you tire out, look out for the best coffee shops near me. Rejuvenate yourself with a hearty cup and some other delicacies.
 3.   The wilderness of Dolly Sods: Another picturesque location full of red spruce trees, valley views, boggy forests, and windswept boulders. The sceneries are striking enough in the northern sections of this remote but highly popular forested area atop the Allegheny plateau. It is a prime spot for any weekend outing or a day-long adventure. The power of this alpine landscape can evoke the hidden poet inside of you.
 4.   The Canaan Valley: It is a national wildlife refuge in the region, which is also the five hundredth national reserve created in the nation. This refuge guards a moist valley with unique wetlands and uplands high up in the Allegheny Mountains. Mountain biking and hiking along the trails are two of the best activities to engage in at this valley. Apart from that you can also go fishing or take a train ride and pass through the magical forests. The train adventures are a taste for the eyes, for sure.
 5.   When a break becomes mandatory: After spending some of your time hiking, or biking, or doing anything else, walk up the high-end cafeteria in the middle of nowhere. The closest town is Davis, and the coffee shop is at an ideal location perfect for adventurers. Grab your coffee here and other delicious food items, and chocolates too. If you need a map of the area, then the coffee shop will oblige.

Unmatched beauty
If you’re a worshipper of Mother Nature, then you don’t have to visit any other country or continent. It’s all there in your homeland, and you have to step inside your car and drive down to Davis. With an all-encompassing coffee shop full of delights and helpful staff, your trip will be a mind-blowing one, which you will not forget. The best part is that you can return sooner rather than later.

The northern end of Canaan Valley is characterized by regenerating northern hardwood forests interspersed with red spruce, open fields converting from pasture to heath, and beaver-curated wetlands. When the first white settlers arrived in the mid-1800's, the valley was a nearly impenetrable wilderness composed of mud-sucking "muskegs", gnarly rhododendron thickets, and monstrous stands of red spruce and eastern hemlock. Within 50 years, it was all gone, cut over and burned down down to bare rock. Salvation for this "Land of Canaan" has only recently come in the form of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, which has set about the painstaking restoration of the valley's diverse (and occasionally threatened or endangered) plant and animal communities, some reaching their southernmost limits in these mountains.
From top: a view toward Cabin Mountain from Middle Ridge, whose open flank is overrun by lowbush blackberry, mountain laurel, bushy St. John's wort, bracken fern, and dotted hawthorn; several of the beaver-engineered wetlands, a mecca for birdwatchers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region; the blazing red berries of red elderberry (Sambucus racemosa), a hugely important food source for local wildlife; the fanning white corymbs of American black elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), which comes into bloom about two months after red elderberry; quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), whose delicate leaves flutter in unison at the slightest breeze; a beautiful young Canaan fir (Abies balsamea var phanerolepsis), a subspecies of balsam fir whose fragrant, blue foliage and high needle retention have made it increasingly popular as an ornamental; a lovely patch of hairy hedge nettle (Stachys hispida), a stately native mint; tall meadow rue (Thalictrum pubescens), a wetlands-loving perennial that clumps impressively along streambanks and bog margins; and lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), whose berries are just now starting to ripen.

The Land of Canaan
By Linda Tancs
In the 1700s the wild valley on the western slope of the Alleghenies looked like the Promised Land to an adventurer in the region.  Or so the story goes.  Regardless of its veracity, that valley is known as the Canaan Valley in West Virginia

High in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge has a cool, moist climate more typical of Maine. Many plants and animals are near their southern limits amidst the valley’s rugged beauty. Rare species abound in the high elevation wetlands. Visitors enjoy misty mornings, snowy winters, cool summers and expansive views looking over mountains, grasslands and wetlands. Spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium) is one of the great pollinator plants of early summer, which is no surprise given that it resides in the same family (Apocynaceae) with milkweed, another essential pollinator plant that blooms concurrently with dogbane. Both milkweed and dogbane produce a milky latex, which varies in toxicity to animals and people. But oh that nectar . . . In just the minute I stopped to take these photos, the subject plant was assailed by a lovely Virginia Ctenucha (Ctenucha virginica) moth, North America's largest wasp moth; a great spangled fritillary (Speyeria cybele); and a small skipper (Hesperiidae).
Photos taken at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
