__/—–\__
All night long all Riley could think about was how quiet Julie had been at school after her crying session in the hallway. She was worried, so she decided upon waking up that she would head over to Julie’s house and walk with her to school.
She had made it quickly, her thoughts clouded with the music that flooded through her headphones. They were old recordings she had found of her mom’s music, having moved them to her computer and changing them to a playable format. It was comfortable for her to be able to hear her mom, being able to sing along with her. Every so often there would be a duet, a boy's voice chiming in and singing along.
Riley wasn’t sure who it was, not knowing much about her mom’s past besides what her dad had told her. This mystery man sang in Riley’s ears, her nerves calming and easing her anxieties about walking into Julie’s house unannounced.
Walking up to the house, she could hear something coming from the backyard and she removed one of her headphones. Riley made her way down the stairs to Julie’s garage, heading over to the doors she could hear the familiar sound of piano chords being played and Julie’s voice ringing out through the open air. She echoed, energy seeming to buzz around Riley causing the hair on her arms to stand up.
Tears came into her eyes and before she could stop herself she was running over and pushing the door open and looking Julie dead on. The girl continued singing, a smile lighting up her face and their gazes meeting. Julie finished singing and called the girl over, Riley joining the girl on the piano bench. The feeling was familiar, having been in this position so many times throughout their childhood.
As Julie was about to speak up, both their attentions were brought over to the door where Flynn was storming in.
“Carlos told me you’d be out here.” The two stared her down, waiting for her to continue. “The three of us need to talk.”
“Are you okay?” Julie asked, Riley motioning for the girl to come closer to the piano, genuine worry flitting across her face.
“No, I’m not okay Julie. You just got kicked out of music! I’ve been up all night thinking about what I was going to say. Might’ve drank seven sodas, but I need to get this out.”
Riley couldn’t help but giggle, piping up quietly. “I thought that was how you spent most nights.”
Flynn turned to look at the girl, rolling her eyes the same way Julie did when she was teased. Riley knew that the girls loved her antics, and even if they got annoyed sometimes they wouldn’t hesitate to be the first people to fight for her.
“Look Julie, you can’t give up music. And Riley agrees.” Riley shook her head, looking very serious as Flynn motioned to her. “Your music is like a gift so that would be a tragedy. So, you’re basically cancelling Christmas, and I love Christmas.”
“May I add, I also love Christmas.” Julie couldn’t help but laugh at that comment, Flynn continuing on her rant without even batting an eyelash.
“When we were six we all promised to be in a band together. The Triple Threat.”
“I never agreed to that name.” Julie piped up.
“Yeah well Riley did and that’s two versus one, anyways! Jules, if you leave the music program the three of us will be apart forever. That’s just what happens.” She joined the other two on the bench and Riley reached around Julie so she could rub Flynn’s back lightly. She knew that the other girl was over exaggerating but her worries were still valid and Riley wanted to ease them.
“Sure we’ll see each other in the hall sometime, but we’ll have different lives, make new friends.”
“That’s not true. Can I please talk now?” Julie pleaded with the other girl and Flynn finally relented. “I just played the piano and sang again.”
A look of shook covered Flynn’s face and she laughed, looking between the two girls in disbelief. Riley nodded, still not quite believing it herself that her best friend was playing music again.
“What? Why didn’t you just say so?”
“Well she would've had you not barged in and let your seven soda’s kick in.” Riley pointed out.
“I’m so happy for you! And us!” She quickly grabbed Riley’s hand and squealed. “Look at you, looking all, I don’t know, alive again!”
“What made you play again?” Riley asked, bumping her shoulder gently about Julie’s. She was curious, wondering if Julie had managed to work through her grief during the night.
“I found this song my mom wrote me.” She paused showing the two girls the song on the piano. Riley read it over and felt her heart clench. The song was all about moving on and moving forward, exactly what Julie needed right now. She hugged the girl tightly, still holding Flynn’s hand and giving it a squeeze.
“I was so afraid to play it. Anything involving music reminds me of her. And then I woke up this morning, realizing that’s why I should play it. To keep her memory alive.” Flynn awed slightly and moved closer, wrapping herself around Julie’s other side and joining the group hug. Flynn gasped, pulling away quickly and speaking.
“We need to tell Mrs. Harrison you can play so you can stay in school and our lives won’t be the awful pictures I just painted for you.” Riley laughed, standing up and dragging both girls with her. They made their way out of the garage together, Julie stopping to close the door behind herself.
“Oh hey.” Julie speaking caused both Flynn and Riley to turn around and face the girl. Riley raised an eyebrow as Julie stared at the empty space next to her and Flynn coughed. She turned to look at the girls, realizing they were still there. “Let’s hustle.”
And with that Julie was ushering the two girls off and on their way to school. The three of them huddled together laughing and talking about how they were going to convince Mrs. Harrison to let Julie stay in the music program.
The easiest decision the three of them could come up with was to let Julie perform in front of her, hoping that Julie’s “killer voice and pure talent” would blow her away, Flynn’s words. Riley agreed, piping in that once Mrs. Harrison heard Julie again she would let her back into the program.
Time seemed to pass by quickly as the three of them talked and talked, laughing away at each other’s stupid okes and making silly quips here and there. The energy around the three of them was comfortable, a relaxing presence that brought all of them some peace.
“Do you think she’ll really let me back in?” Julie asked as the three girls walked up and into the school.
“She has too, you’re too good to let go.” Riley answered.
`
“Believe me, I think it’s wonderful that you sang again. I prayed for this moment for almost a year. But it’s too late.” Mrs. Harrison gave the girls an apologetic look and Riley felt her shoulders slump. There was no way it could end like this. She hadn’t even given Julie an actual chance to prove herself.
“But what if you just hear her play, you know she’s amazing.” Riley pleaded. Mrs. Harrison shook her head.
“It wouldn’t matter. A new student starts tomorrow. There’s only--”
“So many spots.” Julie finished, knowing the line by now. “And if I don’t participate, I’m out. I know.”
“I did everything I could to keep you here this year, but Principal Lessa was very clear that yesterday was your last chance. You’ll have to reapply next semester.” The bell rang as Mrs. Harrison finished explaining the situation to the girls and Riley couldn’t help but feel as if they had lost one of the most important battles of their lives.
They had worked so hard, she had seen the progress Julie had made, had even heard her sing alone that morning. The sound of Julie finally letting go of all the pent up emotions she had been harboring and pouring them out into the best version of themselves.
“I’m truly sorry.” She finished. Students began to file in for the next class and Riley led the girls out of the room, Flynn slinging her arm around Julie’s shoulders, trying to offer some comfort from the situation.
The girls looked between each other and Riley sighed, the familiar action of her hands sliding into her pockets offering her some minor comfort. The jacket she wore belonged to her mother, something she had seen her wearing many times in photos of her own youth, and while Julie played music to stay connected to her mother, Riley went through her things and wore her clothes.
“This sucks.” She kicked her toe into the ground, rubbing her shoe until a small sprout of pain surfaced. A frown stayed placed on her lips, Julie looking up at her and taking her hand in her own.
“It’s going to be okay, I’ll get in next semester.”
“But you’re playing music now! You should be allowed to have the tools and training that we do, who cares if you needed some time.” Riley groaned and gripped her hair in hands. Julie ran over quickly, recognizing the action as a stress habit the other had developed after being in the car accident that killed her mother.
“Riley, breathe.” Julie led the breaths, placing a hand on Riley’s diaphragm, just as her mother had done when the girl would have panic attacks at their home. After a few moments of breathing, Riley calmed down and the urge to pull at herself went away.
“Thank you, mi cielo.”

How To Be Productive Online
Tumblr media
As the the world decides to dress herself with the most vibrant hues of red, yellow and brown, it dawns on me that the end is near.
Autumn is the season of change - there is a certain melancholy in the air. The sun sets faster, scary movies flood your Netflix suggestions and baristas asks if you’d like pumpkin spice flavored syrup pumps in your coffee.
Now before you dip your nose into your cabinet filled with musky Bath and Body Works candles, it is easy to forget that we are still living in a capitalist world where responsibilities are made to be full-filled.
With all the evil that’s happening in the world right now, it would honestly be so much easier for all of us to sit at home and forget our obligations by watching something less scarier than the outside world, an example being literally any horror movie on Netflix.
I will however, pass down my wisdom upon you and suggest a few things you could do to stay productive as a remote worker or student.
1. Stop Being A Slob
When the lockdown happened in spring and everything got cancelled, my structured life went to shit, mornings turned to nights and before I knew it summer was over. I am grateful to have been privileged enough to have lead a somewhat flexible lifestyle but I certainly did not use it to my advantage. Instead of doing the Chloe Ting exercises and being productive, I ended up packing up a lot of weight by stuffing caramel popcorn down my throat till 5 am and losing my life’s purpose.
The first step for me was changing out of my pjs every morning and doing my bed. When I decided to stop being or at least feeling like a slob, I was encouraged to do the next step.
2. Set Up Your Routine
Tumblr media
Despite coming off as free spirited and sporadic, believe it or not - I have a morning routine. At first, I refused to be confined to a routine, as silly as that sounds. I hated the idea of conforming to any sort of time-framed regime until I caved into its benefits, which in turn allowed me to do whatever I wanted to do with my time later. So, what is setting up a morning routine? It depends. For me, my routine consists of waking up everyday at a similar time frame, drinking some water, working out, having a healthy breakfast and finishing up whatever I prioritized to do so before 3 pm.
3. Organize Yourself
Tumblr media
Take a few minutes once a week to look over any deadlines coming up. Clean up your environment, clear your desk from any useless papers laying around and maybe start working on your assignments in advance. Make sure to set a plan of attack for everything and that includes allowing yourself to not lose sight of tasks you truly enjoy.
4. Breakdown Your Priorities
Tumblr media
Write down what you’d like to do today and try distinguishing when based on specific time slots. Rank your tasks in order from highest to lowest priority. A good tip would be to knock down the hardest of tasks in the beginning of your day so you don’t procrastinate at night.
5. Get a Planner
Tumblr media
This is not my shopping addiction forcing you to go down the rabbit hole with me. I think buying a planner is important because it gives you a safe space to lay down your tasks in a systematic order. You don’t need to waste your time figuring out how to organize how you write down your tasks. Buying a good planner makes you plan ahead your deadlines, upcoming readings and quizzes. But the perfect planner lets you keep track of your personal life and hobbies in order to balance out everything.
6. Participate
Active participation is vital for online meetings or classes. Speaking up allows you to become a familiar name in a virtual setting and most importantly helps you not fall asleep in the middle of your zoom session. Personally, I felt a boost of confidence ever since I allowed myself to participate in online sessions.
Tumblr media
7. Reward Yourself
We tend to rest the second we feel physically exhausted, but I believe mental health is just as important. And no, do not skip your classes and ditch your homework. Instead, try the 50/10 rule: take a 10 minute break every 50 minutes of work to speed up your productivity. Remote online work/school can be very tiring and almost detrimental to your mental capacity and productivity levels when you don’t optimize your time. The lack of distinction between work and school environment may be draining. Since our responsibilities are usually handled online, try to step away from electronic devices.
Tumblr media
Not to mention that looking at a computer for hours on end can make your brain hurt. So put your phone away, go for a short walk or coffee run, and just recharge for your next online class/meeting.
8. Just Plain Effort
Tumblr media
Despite the virtual setting, responsibilities are still just as important. Do not get things twisted - synchronous meetings are still meetings. You just need to put the same amount of time, effort and dedication to online work even though it does not feel necessarily real. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what works for you because I honestly don’t know your medium or better yet, your sweet spot, however; part of the process is figuring it out.

Vulnerability is Chicken Soup for the Soul
I go to a class on anxiety and depression every Tuesday at a local church here in Nampa. Recently, we talked about the importance of vulnerability. My mind immediately went to the relationships within my inner circle. 2019 brought a lot of darkness in my life, but my friendships added consistency. I spent the whole year focusing on building deeper relationships with my friends and I found myself in the process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Roller Derby is a huge part of my life, as I dedicate 3 nights a week for practices. Some people are intrigued when I tell them, others get tired of me talking about it constantly, and some actually enjoy keeping tabs on my journey as a skater for the Beet City Bombers.
I remember my very first scrimmage. There were a million things going on at once and I was the epitome of a deer in the headlights. The team was split into blacks and white. The only advice anyone could give me was to stay with my color and never be alone. Other than that, being thrown into the lion’s cage was the only way I ever learned. In derby, everyone learns the hard way. I remember standing on a lineup of blockers with this chick who just looked like she knew what she was doing. And here is me...scared shitless, but excited to take some real hits. I said, “Please, can you help me? I don’t know what I’m doing!” She just looked at me and said, “You don’t want to follow me. I’m a runner.” The whistle blew a few seconds later and she was nowhere to be found. This was the first time I ever met Slaybretooth Tiger.
My second encounter with Tiger was at an after party, where she told me all about how she just moved here to be with the love of her life. I was surprised she was even talking to me because I thought she hated my guts. “I don’t hate you,” she said. “That’s just my face.” This was the first time we really connected. I always wanted to be friends with her but I couldn’t tell if she wanted to be my friend back. For all I knew, I could have just been another body on the track to her.
January 2019 rolled around and she agreed to meet me for coffee. I had been bugging her for weeks and she kept canceling. I no longer take offense to this because I know now that this woman just really hates leaving the warmth of her own home. She finally met me at the Flying M and we were there for 3 hours talking about anything and everything. In that moment, I knew that she would end up being my best friend eventually.
After that day, we started messaging each other on the daily. We confided in each other by talking about our daily struggles. I definitely felt like I wasn’t alone. I wanted to ask her to be my derby wife (derby slang: BFF on the team). Tiger and I drove to a derby bout together and on the way home, we listened to her “biography” playlist. This woman had a song for every significant moment in her life from birth to present day in order! I also had a biography playlist of my own, so naturally...
Fuck it, I had to ask her.
She accepted, with the Goo Goo Dolls blasting in the background.
We started putting on our makeup together on game days. Braiding her hair and listening to “My Favorite Murder” became our tradition. I surprise her with brownies and ice cream on her bad days. She makes sure I have coffee on the mornings we hang out. When I had an emotional breakdown at our away game in Jackson Hole, she allowed me to cry in her arms even though that’s not her thing. And you better believe that I did the same thing for her when she felt that way.
Tumblr media
Grey’s Anatomy fans everywhere know that famous line where Christina looks into Meredith’s eyes and says, “You’re my person.” It was such a powerful moment in television history because these two characters who had been through so much together were finally acknowledging that they were best friends. Tiger is my person and if it wasn’t for Roller Derby, I probably would have never even met her. The truth is, both of us were at a point in our lives where we just needed someone to say, “I’ve got you boo.” We are different in so many ways but I think that’s what makes our friendship so unique. We have just spent a lot of time trying to figure each other out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We really do have a lot of things in common though:
- We both hate being cold more than anything
- We are definitely not morning people
- We could spend an entire day binge-watching The L Word and drinking wine
- We are satisfied by going to a bar just to watch people act like fools
- We equally agree that cookie dough is best with more dough and less chocolate chips
- We value beautiful lyrics, but love girl rap at the same time
- Alanis Morissette is our queen
Tumblr media
It’s kind of funny because when I told my parents that our team had to pick emergency buddies, my mom knew immediately who I chose. “She knows to call me in case of an emergency, right? We are friends on Facebook!” For the record...yes mom, she knows.
The more I get to know Tiger, the more amazed I am with her strength. When I came to my team, I really admired her skating abilities and how much she took charge on the track. Inside her tough exterior is a woman who wears many hats. She’s my derby wife and best friend. She’s my former captain...Director of Training...Cancer survivor...and a mom. She conquers everything she does, even if she doesn’t always think so.
When I decided to finally get counseling, I had to figure out exactly what I wanted out of it. She said, “Tell them that you want to love yourself as much as your best friend does.” I want the same for her, which is why I won’t stop my sappiness. Words of affirmation is my love language and she’s just going to have to deal with me telling her how great she is every day.
Tumblr media
I’m a vulnerable person and most people would call me an open book. I always used to think that being vulnerable was my biggest weakness, but recently I started to see that it’s actually my greatest strength. Being friends with someone who is opposite from me in that way was new for me. I remember constantly apologizing to Tiger because I felt like I was pushing her too much to open up to me. I remind myself that she doesn’t have to tell me anything, she chooses too. Every time she tells me something that’s hard to talk about, I’m thankful that she was able to share it with me. We probably wouldn’t be as close as we are now if we didn’t let each other in.
Tumblr media
To my best friend...if you are reading this,
Thank you for letting me into your world. You are the Karen to my Georgia.

The Kings Mate
Chapter 14
Meeting The Daughters Of A Demon
Note: All of the photos and gifs are from Pinterest, and they’re all saved in a folder called ‘The Kings Mate’
Tumblr media
She was in the dark, freezing air pricking the air. Ice formed at her fingertips and fogged breaths escaping her lips. She stood in front of the dog demon that haunted her mind and dreams. “Why..?” She whispered. White strands of hair fell over her eyes, eyes that were a dull blue; as deep the darkest pits of the ocean. Frost gather around her bare skin forming snowflakes across her skin, and snow falling all around her and the lord. “I can’t allow you to travel to the feudal era.” He spoke. “That isn’t your decision!” She yelled. “Maybe not, but it is my choice.” He stated. She glared at him clenching her fists ice forming around them. “You will understand some day. But until then you can stand there and argue with me, freeze me, do as you wish. But no matter what I will always come back.” he stated. She growled and turned away walking around the darkened room, not knowing where but just away from the dog demon.
Tumblr media
Sesshomaru leaned against his tree with Jaken sitting not to far from him. Inuyasha woman had told him of the situation and that Luna was unable to travel through. She didn’t say any reason as to why she couldn’t; but he didn’t question it either. His eyes moved over towards the well but clicking his tongue and standing up and starting walking. “H-huh wait for me milord!!” Jaken yelled. He quickly grabbed his staff and ran after the demon catching up with him.
“Why do you walk away?” The demon questioned. He walked right beside the female watching forward. He always thought the females mind was a mysterious place. It showed locked memories, hidden thoughts; and a pure set of darkness lit by only flames. The room the two were always in was dark and filled with ice, freezing to the point of frosted skin. Ice sculptures of people he had no clue of who they were but only that they were important to the girl. Snow falling lightly creating patterns on the ground, and falling into her hair creating a beautiful glow. “Why do you follow?” she asked back. “Because I’m a part of your mind. And I’m the only thing not locked away.” he answred. She glared at him because she knew he was right. She couldn’t lock him away with everything else, even though she knew how..She just didn’t want to. She sighed and looked away crossing her arms making more frost mark up her arms. “Why not find this eras Sesshomaru? Now that he saw you in the feudal, he will most likely remember you in this era.” He stated. “He’s known me for a week. Believe me, he wouldn’t remember me after thousands of years.” she mumbled. “Dog demons never forget someone. Even if they have met them for a simple second.. Our memories are keen and strong.” he explained. She hummed listening to the mans words. “He still has my sketchbook..” she softly said. “You should wake up now. You have school in an hour. I’ll be here when you fall back asleep.” He stated softly walking away. She hummed and watched him and then looked down sighing.
Tumblr media
The females eyes opened and slowly sat up rubbing her eyes sighing quietly. She jumped at the sound of her alarm, quickly reaching over and turning it off. The female slowly picked herself up and walked out of the room rubbing her eyes. She could see her mother walk out as well. “Ah good morning dear.. I hope you feel much better than yesterday. School was canceled, bad weather.” She said softly. Smiling at her mother and nodded knowing the weather was most likely her fault, but paid no mind to it. The girl walked down the steps with Sato, her grandfather sitting in the kitchen cleaning her katanas. “What are you doing grandpa..?” She asked. Luna slid down and sat beside him watching closely. “Cleaning your blade, gonna take them in today and your gonna come with me to classes.” He said. He smiled cheekily at the girl. “These are the best swords we have, and I want the owner of them to come with me!” he said excitedly. She laughed softly and nodded slowly standing up and going to get changed. She stepped inside her bedroom shutting the door behind her and walking to her mirror. Her fingers tracing through her white hair sighing quietly, and slowly made her way over to her closet pulling out an outfit and a pair of ankle boots.
Tumblr media
She slipped on a black cardigan and grabbed her phone and car keys leaving the bedroom, seeing her grandpa was in his regular kimono and was waiting for her Sato. “You guys be careful out there!” Her mother yelled from the kitchen. Each replying with a simple ‘yes ma’am!’. Each of them left the house and walked down the steps to the females car. “Just be careful putting them in the back..” she said softly. She unlocked her car and stepped into the drivers side, and her younger brother jumped into the back. She popped the trunk for her grandfather who placed the swords gently inside, then carefully shut the trunk and got in the passenger side.
The female pulled in front of the dojo, parking beside a beautiful black car; that stood at high class. “Have someone important here grandpa..?” the female asked softly. “Ah yes! A young man has brough his two daughter here to train with archery!” He said excitedly. She sighed and opened the trunk stepping out with her younger brother. “Hmm..he actually has rich customers..That really surprising..” Sota said. This made the female laugh softly and took her two swords from her grandpa, placing them at her side which hooked to her belt perfectly. She held her key ring around her middle finger as she walked inside the building with the two.
Sato and Luna stood up above watching their grandfather. The female shook her head and slowly turned around; he was speaking with this businessman’s daughter. She just sighed and trailed her fingers over one of the bows before picking one up and grabbing an arrow. Sato smiled brightly while watching, as he loved seeing his older sister shoot; she never missed! She spun the arrow around and positioned it properly; bringing the string back and placing the arrow against her cheek and staring at the target farthest from her before releasing it. This caught the attention of the two girls downbellow, watching in amazement as the arrow hit the center perfectly. “Hmph.” Luna hummed. She lowered the bow and bowed as the girls clapped. “So cool!” Sato said smiling. “Yes..my granddaughter is the best to look for when it comes to archery...She was trained to never miss!” her grandfather said. Luna could hear how proud he was making her shake her head. “It’s the bow and arrow that has the full control. Not the person.” she said softly. She walked down the steps lowered her cardigan and letting it fall holding out the bow for one of the girls. The girl with short hair proudly took it smiling. “I’ll gladly help out grandpa.” She said softly. She unhooked her blades setting them against the wall and waved for the girls to fallow her back upstairs.
Tumblr media
“I’m Towa, and this is my sister Setsuna..!” the silver haired girl said. The older female bowed her head smiling. “Luna.” She stated. She showed the girls how to hold the bow properly and how to position so it would hit the target. She had pulled out a simple one so they would be able to practice up close before starting with the farthest away. Setsuna had gotten it quicker than Towa, but they both seemed to be doing so well. She was so distracted with teaching the girls that she hadn’t even noticed her grandpa was now upstairs with the girls father. “Can you show us your shooting again??” Towa asked smiling brightly. The silverette blinked before nodding with a small smile. She walked over fixing her gloves and picking up another bow and grabbing another arrow, doing the same routine she had done before. But the arrow slowly froze over creating a light glow in the corner of the teens eyes; and finally she let it go watching it fall hitting the center of the target creating a light ice pattern. The girls gasped in amazement at the ice and then looked at the girl, noticing she was looking down at the bow. “You wield ice.” Came a deep voice. The voice made the teen tense up and stand straight quickly looking back; her eyes widening at the sight. “I’ve only seen one human able to do so.” He spoke once more. She blushed and lowered the bow and nodded. “Ah y-yes...I got it f-from a late relative..” she stated. The male hummed while looking directly at her and then moved his eyes back to the girls. Sota ran over to his sister smiling as she placed the bow back in its place. “Can we go get something to eat..please” the boys asked. The female nodded making sure the girls were okay; once knowing, she walked down the steps with her younger brother. She grabbed her cardigan and sighed walking outside with her keys. ‘He wouldn’t recognize me...mostly with my hair being this color..’ she thought. She unlocked the car door allowing her brother to get into the passenger side while she got in the drivers side.
