In the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s death, i’ve come across a publication of 1901 in “The San Franscico Call” of Queen Victoria’s death, in the same year. Here is the translated piece fo that article, from English to portuguese.

Aqueles mais próximos dela ouviram um sussurro de despedida e uma menção carinhosa ao seu filho mais velho.

A casa de Yohan era composta por sua mãe e suas outras duas tias. Era uma família um tanto quanto esotérica, se havia insônia, então deveria adicionar algumas ervas em uma bacia cheia de água e a colocar debaixo da cama, se tinha tosse, então sua tia lhe oferecia o pior chá da casa alegando que aquele iria milagrosamente acabar tudo, se havia uma pequena paquera na escola, então deveria tirar nas cartas para saber se daria certo.

Cresceu rodeado de três mulheres mediuns, aprendeu desde pequeno a entender as cartas de Tarô, a fazer as próprias interpretações. A feitiçaria também era muito comum... Toda vez que lhe explicavam tinha aquele tom de perigo. A mãe ficou incrivelmente feliz quando com 6 anos mostrou o mesmo dom da mediunidade, enxergando os espíritos e podendo conversar com eles. Às vezes o garoto era chamado para guiar aquelas almas ao outro além.

Foi uma infância divertida, cheia de histórias assustadoras e aventuras. Mas não era aquilo que realmente chamava a sua atenção. Sonhava em ir para bem longe dali, mais especificamente para Hollywood. O sonho era ser diretor de cinema, atuar por trás das câmeras, tentando mostrar por uma lente todos os seus sentimentos. Yoon sabia que aquilo era o que queria fazer, era como se soubesse desse tom. Gravar uma cena era tão simples quanto tirar uma carta do baralho.

Quando completou dezoito anos correu para pegar uma bolsa de estudos em uma Universidade Canadense. A resposta favorável foi o que lhe animou bastante, era como se o sonho estivesse finalmente indo para frente. Entretanto, quando chegou realmente no momento de sair de casa, foi advertido por sua mãe que deveria ficar... De forma tão rude ela lhe disse que aquele futuro era impossível, até mesmo as cartas lhe falavam aquilo.

Yohan sabia do que se tratava, a maldição que todos pareciam comentar. Esse era o único assunto que permanecia cético. Só não queria admitir para si mesmo que deveria permanecer em uma cidade para sempre, vendo os mesmos rostos e tendo que temer das mesmas lendas. Parecia idiota, algo estúpido. Havia tanto para conhecer do mundo e ele estaria destinado a ficar no mesmo lugar por algum erro do passado?

Mas a verdade lhe tomou após três anos de sua estádia no Canadá. Recebeu a notícia que infelizmente a Universidade estava fazendo alguns cortes de dinheiro e algumas bolsas estariam sendo cortadas pelo bem da infraestrutura. Ele, com algum outros alunos, perderam a chance de estudar no campus. Era um absurdo, chegou até mesmo discutir com todos os funcionários da faculdade, não poderiam fazer aquilo com ele, não depois de passar três anos no curso. Mas não houve mudanças e quando viu, estava voltando de novo para Manyeo.

Sente ódio da vila, é como se o lugar lhe lembrasse de uma enorme infelicidade. Para si, o ar de cada canto é pesado, sem vida, os espíritos vivem murmurando em seu ouvido, reclamando de arrependimentos passados. Virou estagiário na biblioteca pública justamente por ser um lugar onde pode ficar quieto e pensar em alguma coisa para sair oficialmente do lugar. Grande parte do seu salário vem do trabalho de meio período de fotógrafo amador.
