11th December 2022: Calshot and home
We had a look at Calshot this afternoon to see if we could see the Walrus that had been there earlier in the day, we were too late to see it here but did have a nice walk around and look around in the very fresh air seeing a lot of great birds. We got some brilliant intimate sightings of a rustic Rock Pipit and two sweetly patterned Turnstones in particular on the stony beach area near to the lovely Calshot Castle which it was good to take in today. Some powerful and precious moments with two species I really like. It was good to get some nice photo opportunities, I took the second picture in this photoset of the Rock Pipit and eighth of a Turnstone. As I said yesterday Turnstones were one of the first birds we ever saw when getting into birdwatching at Hill Head in 2007 a time I have been reflecting on a lot lately so it was a nice reminder seeing these two and some more on the walk. It was lovely being ensconced into the landscape watching these birds go by, and mindful to watch and listen to gentle breaking waves on a bitterly cold day.
A Pied Wagtail was a nice one to see closely too and it was brilliant to see another Common Gull lately seeing this striking bird with a piercing eye and messy head markings, a bird in winter plumage that sharply told of a winter’s day alongside the temperature I took the fourth picture in this photoset of a bird I saw a few times this afternoon still and in flight. A decent sized flock of Brent Geese drifting overhead, close views of Great Crested Grebe and a Grey Heron seen well on a wooden bridge over a channel as we got in were other avian highlights. I enjoyed some hardy ragwort here today too as the sixth picture in this photoset shows and possible cress in the way of plants.
There were nice moody views and wintery sky scenes over the beach, inlets and wider Southampton water blending nicely nicely with the industry and buildings of the area with the tower and castle looking nice too. I took the first, fifth and seventh pictures in this photoset of views here today. I also liked seeing the texture of shells and stones here which I took the third picture in this photoset of, a pretty sight.
At home today as I enjoyed a quiet morning there was another frost and also ominous coloured clouds which the ninth picture in this photoset shows brought snow/sleet which looked beautiful and dramatic as it fell. Starling, Robin and Goldfinch were nice birds to see in the garden and the roof opposite for Starling with Magpie seen there too with the winter weather’s affect showing on the red leaves on the tree out the back the leaves of this tree are a beautiful pattern of red, yellow and a bit of green now with the frost and bare branch at the top adding nice colour to the scene I tweeted another photo of this tree on Dans_Pictures tonight and other plants around home, out the front the collection of trees are practically leafless. There were great frosty fields to see on the journey and looking atmospheric on the way home as it got dark tonight which was nice to see. I liked seeing the Christmas lights on that my Mum has put up on the balcony and the spider emerging from the crack in the landing another good view of it and I got the tenth and final picture in this photoset of it with my macro lens. Another great relaxing weekend, wishing you all a good new week.
Wildlife Sightings Summary for Calshot: Two of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe and Brent Geese, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Herring Gull, Moorhen, Grey Heron, Turnstone, I believe Oystercatchers flying past, Pied Wagtail, Rock Pipit, Robin seen nicely and a nice few Starlings.

Visit Calshot Castle and Beach - a day out in Hampshire, England
Visit Calshot Castle and Beach – a day out in Hampshire, England
Summer is just round the corner and that means planning some holidays and days out. And one of the best ways to spend summer days is on the beach. May I present to you a quaint and not overcrowded beach and a caslt in Calshot, Hampshire, two hidden gems near Southampton. Where is Calshot? Calshot village is south west of Southampton, in Hampshire. If you’ve heard of the Beaulieu Motor Museum,…

...Tintagel, immortalised in British mythology as the place of King Arthur’s conception, is one of a string of castles at risk of tumbling into the sea as climate change increases the pace of coastal erosion.
English Heritage has launched a fundraising appeal and identified its six most vulnerable castles, warning that some of England’s most beloved spots may be lost if nothing is done.
Rob Woodside, the director of estates at English Heritage, said: “Erosion along England’s coastline is nothing new but the rate of land loss that we have seen over the past few years is alarming. Rising sea levels and more regular storms pose a real risk to the future of many of our sites.”
Chunks of Tintagel have long fallen into the sea but parts of the cliff directly in front of the visitor centre have recently been lost to erosion, eating into a viewing area and coastal path.
Other sites at risk in the south-west of England include Bayard’s Cove Fort, built in Tudor times to protect Dartmouth in Devon. It is set on a terrace cut from the rocky riverbank, a beautiful location but one prone to flooding. English Heritage says work is urgently needed to investigate the impact of rising sea levels.
Off the Cornish coast, English Heritage is also concerned about the garrison walls in St Mary’s, the largest of the Isles of Scilly. They were built after the attack of the Armada in 1588 due to concerns that Spain would send a second fleet.
But the sea is now more of a threat than enemy forces, with the shape of the walls creating pinch points, or “armpits”, where the tide’s power is focused.
English Heritage is also concerned about Piel Castle in Cumbria, set on a low-lying island about half a mile from the coast in Morecambe Bay. Much of the island has already been lost and the castle’s keep is at risk.
Two castles in Hampshire are under threat. Calshot, built by Henry VIII, is considered at risk, with work needed on a spit and foreshore.
Part of Hurst Castle, also built by Henry VIII, collapsed days before planned work to stabilise the site in February last year, after the sea exposed and undercut its foundations. While stabilisation of the damaged section has taken place, the sea walls around the Tudor fort urgently need repairing and strengthening.
Woodside said: “The partial collapse of the east battery at Hurst Castle was a devastating reminder of the power of the sea and the risks our coastal heritage faces, but Hurst is not an isolated case.
“Hundreds of heritage sites in the UK and around the world are increasingly at risk. If these coastal properties are to survive the coming decades, we will need to strengthen their walls and build sea defences to protect them.”

A rare surviving steam tug tender. The Tug Tender Calshot in Southampton took passengers out to the Queen Mary and other historic ocean liners. Recently the ship belonged to the city council, under a trust who had largely neglected it. The ship last year was sold to a private individual who is after scrapping it.
A few years ago I managed to get on board and take some photos.

Ten standout moments/themes of my December and my birds of the month
Seeing two Short-eared Owls flying around near dusk at Farlington Marshes
A sensational moment of nature watching with a favourite species of mine which has been a key one to my year, one of my favourite ever birdwatching moments. I took the first picture in this photoset of a view there that day. I shared my bird of the month three ways this month; a consistent star, a one big standout moment and landmark moment for the year species and this species which narrowly missed out on being my first bird of the month in January is the big standout moment one.
Blog on the day: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/702739809365557248/41222-grey-phalarope-short-eared-owls-brent
Seeing my first ever American Wigeon at Pennington
A powerful moment for my whole year seeing a new bird and a very beautiful and alluring one in the rain at Pennington, and this is my landmark for the year bird of the month. I got the second picture in this photoset of gorse there that day.

Two rarer ducks for Lakeside Country Park that turned up: Wigeon and Gadwall
I love when I see something not so uncommon elsewhere/generally but that is hardly ever found at my local Lakeside, winter is the time it happens most, and these two delightful duck species were thrilling to see and stood high in my standout patch and home moments of the year’s closing month. I took the third picture in this photoset of the Gadwall.

Run of seeing Common Gulls
Mostly at Lakeside with the couple I enjoyed seeing there with sightings at coastal sites Hill Head and Calshot too I have had a brilliant run of seeing this species I really like in winter plumage multiple times, they are such beautiful and charming birds and this stood out this month so much so that it earned my consistent star bird of the month title. The fourth picture in this photoset shows one at Lakeside on the ice with Black-headed Gulls.

Taking photos during the cold snap
One of my most memorable ever runs for seasonal photos in a winter over that time period as I enjoyed photographing generally and close up frost as the fifth picture in this photoset shows and ice gripping the landscape and birds on the latter, which felt a key period for my photography year.
A blog at the time: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/703277251984277504/10122022-part-1-of-2-frosty-morning-at-lakeside
Seeing Grey Phalarope that day at Farlington Marshes too
It was gratifying to see this merry bird flitting around a pool and add the species to my year list. I took the record shot the sixth picture in this photoset of it.

Velvet Scoter at Lee-on-Solent
Another star species of my year I really liked catching up with this month. I took the landscape in the seventh picture in this photoset there that day.

Run of seeing Great Spotted Woodpeckers
Another nice little sequence this month of seeing this exciting bird that I adore before and through the festive days at a few places. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of one at Lakeside during the run.
A daily blog mentioning this: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/704643396947656704/25122022-pig-bush-in-the-new-forest-and-bits-at
Siskins at Lakeside
A brilliant moment of patch birdwatching late on in the month with a group of this species I love seeing here, one of my favourite Lakeside moments this year very late in it. I took the ninth picture in this photoset of one.
Blog on the day: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/705099183032516608/30th-december-2022-lakeside-and-home-siskins-and
Flowers that I saw this month, notably red deadnettle, yarrow and gorse
Three recurring stars as I enjoyed seeing a few flowers still this month, with mercury, mustard and carrot seen nicely too and I also liked seeing berries and flower seed heads this month. I got the tenth and final picture in this photoset of yarrow in the flower bed area out the front.
A daily blog mentioning this:

I thought finding a seal pup on the beach at Scarborough last year was exciting (and dangerous - it headed for the road and nearly caused a traffic accident; a group of us had to coax it back onto the sand: not an easy task, as no one really knew what to do with a scared and hostile sea creature), but I’d surely have been ecstatic had I been lucky enough to be there when Thor the Walrus rolled up the day before New Year’s Eve!
The walrus is believed to have left his home in the Arctic circle earlier in the winter and was first sighted on the coast of Zeeland, in the south east Netherlands and then continued along the Belgian coast, until he reached the shores of Dieppe and Brittany in northern France. Around three weeks later, he was spotted resting on Calshot Beach in Hampshire, before making his way up to Scarborough and today has made it to Blyth in Northumberland.

People warned to stay away after walrus called Thor appears on UK beach
People warned to stay away after walrus called Thor appears on UK beach
Thor the Walrus pictured at Calshot beach in Hampshire yesterday (Picture: Matt Eade/Picuteexclusiv e.com) It hasn’t been that long since Wally was on his European tour last summer – but now there’s another walrus around. A large walrus – nicknamed Thor – was spotted resting on a beach near Southampton yesterday in a rare UK sighting. The marine mammal was seen snoozing on the shoreline of the…

📌 Short Sunderland MK.V Flying Boat Patrol Bomber (ML796) IWM Duxford.
Built by Short Brothers as a Mk.III ML796 was subsequently converted to Mk.V Standard and delivered to RAF Calshot on 15th May 1945, it joined No.228 Squadron at Pembroke Dock shortly afterwards. To No.4 OTU, Alness on 3rd March 1946, and then to No.57 MU, Wig Bay on 10th July 1946. Reactivated for No.230 Squadron in 1948 for the Berlin Airlift. On 20th December 1949, ML796 was included in a batch of Sunderlands for the French Navy, overhauled at Belfast 22nd June to 3rd August 1950 and handed over to the French Navy. Served with Flottile 7FE, Dakar until December 1960. Flown to France and stored at Lanveoc-Poulmic for 5 years until bought by M. R. Bertin and used as a disco at Maisden-le-Riviere for 4 years, then moved to La Baule as a nightclub and restaurant. A planned motorway through the site forced M. Bertin to offer it free to anyone who could take it away. The offer was accepted by the Imperial War Museum and it arrived at Duxford in five sections on 9th July 1976.
