I think one of the sweetest things about SamBucky is that they're both obsessed with protecting one another in every way possible when they've both spent their lives as the guys who protect everyone else.

Who doesn't watch Sam's arrival in the movies and think this nice guy who lost his wingman needs someone in his corner who will value him more than the flag? Who doesn't watch the first Captain America movie and think wait, the fun guy who kept little Steve from getting his ass kicked repeatedly is headed to fight the Nazis alone?!

Fast forward to these two meeting up and everyone thinks Sam is a perfect soldier and overlooks him and his needs but it's Bucky who is backing him, making sure he doesn't get hurt, giving him someone he can be vulnerable around and open up to. Everyone else treats Bucky like an unstable serial killer but for Sam, whose "bionic staring machine" jokes are rooted in affection, is the one who is there, making sure that no one imprisons or tries to harm Bucky again. It's not until they found one another that they each had someone who would look after them in the way they've spent their lives looking after everyone else.

I’m still not over the fact that Bucky - despite his selfish behaviour and despite ignoring Sam’s texts for, probably, months, and despite inviting himself on a mission just to be annoying and cause problems - has never had any actual doubts about Sam’s role as Captain America.

His actions and arguments might have been wrong, but from the very beginning he didn’t voice a single complaint regarding Sam’s new title - and, what is more, most of his mistakes came from defending the mantle being taken by Sam a bit too hard. A typical example of having your heart in the right place and manifesting it in the worst way possible.

Which is funny to me, because if there was a single person, who would have any right to voice an opinion (including a negative one) about Steve’s choice of a successor that would probably be Bucky. And yet... even though he already had a somewhat tense relationship with Sam, he was always supportive of him - albeit in a slightly misguided way.

And finally... I really like how with Sambucky you can see a very similar thing happening on both sides... 1) “Sam, do you have a problem with Bucky, because he was the Winter Soldier?” / “No! Not at all. He was a victim in that situation, I don’t blame him for anything that Hydra made him do. ...He’s just really fucking annoying, you know?”; and 2) “Bucky, do you have a problem with Sam, because you don’t approve of him taking up the Captain America mantle?” / “The fuck you talking about? Sam Wilson is the only person alive who’s worthy of being the new Cap and you’re lucky to have him. I support him with my entire heart! ...But he’s also a little bitch and I have to remind him every once in a while.”

Ya know, now that I’m thinking about it, Sam was so unsurprised that Bucky just showed up unannounced at his work. Like he literally had no shock even though Bucky had been ignoring him and basically was MIA, Sam wasn’t like ‘wtf???’ bc it was out of nowhere, he wasn’t confused or questioning. Sam really just was like ‘omg here we go with the bullshit 🙄🙄’ and was waiting for Bucky to just go away and leave him be. And bc of that, I bet it’s not the first time. I definitely feel like Bucky pulled up on him randomly before, was ridiculous and annoying for a bit, and then went back to ghosting him, so Sam was totally unfazed when Bucky did it again.

Can we just appreciate Sam Wilson for a second.

Because this man met Captain America; who at the time was still a legend to most people. And didn’t freak out, in fact, he got Steve to open up about war and life in the forties and then- when Steve and Natasha showed up like lost puppies at his door- he let them in, made them breakfast, and came out of retirement to help them.

And even before all that he had dedicated his life to helping other vets!?

He took nothing from Bucky but still helped find him because he means a lot to Steve, became a literal fugitive, went on the run for two years, fought in another war, d.i.e.d!!! Came back to life, fought another war then went right back to the military after Steve left him.

He then fought against the flag smashers with Bucky, helped Bucky with his problems and accepted the mantle of Captain America despite knowing people would hate him for it.

Plus Anthony Mackie acting!?? They deserve so much more credit.
