You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.
Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…
…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.

WTW TAROT PROMPTS – 1. The Magician
Themes: manifesting, problem solving, cleverness, determination, concentration, communication, creativity, productivity
In which I present to you an exclusive preview from chapter 24! Or, the one where Elise puts her getting-people-to-open-up skills to good use to find out how to change Zahir’s mind about leaving the band. Enjoy!
Zahir smiled sadly. "You just need a new guitarist," he said. "I've been looking for one, but…" He trailed off, looking sheepish.
"But approaching people is hard?" Elise finished the sentence for him.
His face lit up a little. "That's right!"
"Been there, done that, got the T-shirt." Elise grinned, and Zahir laughed. "But hey," she added, sobering up, "you sure you don't wanna come back before we replace you?"
Zahir's laugh vanished as quickly as a drawing wiped off an etch-a-sketch.
"I…" Squirming, he fidgeted with his book, hesitating for a long, heavy moment. "I…don't know."
Elise stuck her hands into her pockets. "What's keeping you?" she asked.
"I don't think I fit in," Zahir admitted. "It's like…like all of you are in your own world, and I'm just there."
He paused for a moment, pondering his words, and then he continued. "That didn't make sense," he admitted. "But I…you're all way older than me! And the music you like is so different. Whenever you talk about a song or a band, I have to Google it!"
Elise nodded, mentally jotting down everything he had said. "Right, you're into different music," she said. "The songs we make aren't really your music either, right?"
"That's not it!"
Elise bit back a smirk. Her deliberate phrasing had hit the mark.
"I really like our songs!" Zahir insisted, not even noticing that he had included himself. "But I don't know any of the music you four listen to…and I don't even know where to start! And then you put it on and all sing along and I'm just…" He dropped his gaze to the ground. "I'm just standing there!"
This time Elise didn't bother hiding her smile.
"Been there, done that."
Zahir blinked. "Huh?"
"I get it. It can be overwhelming," she said. "But hey, I don't think it's the end of the world either."
Before Zahir could answer, Elise took a glance at the clock beside the door. "Anyway, I think you should go into the classroom," she said. "You don't wanna be late again, do you?"

Snippet from JELLIE chapter 45. Or, the one where I roast Nate Fairweather and Elise Jamieson all in one fell swoop.

Sister piece to this post I made for Jen—now here’s an Elise study. Also very much a self-callout because Elise is basically me. Interestingly, writing it actually gave me courage to reach out to someone I was originally too chicken to contact, so maybe by writing more of Elise’s arc I might actually find the strength to undergo the same development as her!

Besides, wait another four days to see her again? No matter the circumstances, she absolutely, really didn't want to let it come to that.
(Which was weird, some part of her brain noted, because that was a sentiment she usually reserved for crushes. Except, even on the off chance that she was indeed attracted to girls too—which she still wasn't sure about—she was fairly certain Jen wasn't actually her type.)
It’s been some time since I last shared any snippets from JELLIE but I need you guys to see this. Oh, Elise, you couldn’t be more wrong.

WTW TAROT PROMPTS – 0. The Fool
Themes: beginnings, innocence, new energy, potential, idealism, risk-taking
A quick overview of Elise Jamieson’s descent into hell, featuring a lot of firsts and a lot of out-of-character risk-taking on her part. Risk-taking that definitely pays off, although she has yet to realize the extent of it!

Really enjoying any and all interactions between Jen and Nate in JELLIE…they highlight the contrast between them so well! Like, Jen is this hot-blooded, outgoing, affectionate dork who wears her heart on her sleeve and is Elise’s #1 fan and isn’t afraid to open up to her, and then you have Nate who’s so horribly repressed he can’t even compliment Ellie to her face when prompted. I know I initially said the only problem with Nate/Ellie is bad timing, what with her being sucked into a world that’s not his, but honestly? She’s already so reserved. The last thing she needs is a boyfriend who can only communicate in jokes and understatements.
I stand corrected. Nate Fairweather is a terrible choice as Elise’s boyfriend regardless of Jen, and even without the band they wouldn’t have worked out in the long term.

“I’ve figured out,” Elise says out of nowhere, putting her phone down, “why messaging strangers first scares me so much.”
Jen looks up from the sheet of song lyrics she has been staring at for the past twenty minutes, hoping they would memorize themselves already. “Why?” she asks, sounding all too grateful for the distraction.
“Because I have nothing to work with.”
Fiddling with the sheet of lyrics, Jen ponders the words before reaching for a ballpoint pen. “What do you mean?”
“Well…you know how I work.” Elise leans back, gesturing with her hands to illustrate her point. “Depending on who I’m talking to, I pick out the version of myself that I think is the safest to show them. I mean, everyone does that, to some extent,” she adds. “But I think I do a lot more…fine attuning than most people. Does that make any sense?”
“I think I get it.” Jen keeps clicking her pen as she speaks, something Elise would’ve found insufferable with everyone else but tolerates with her bandmate and co-songwriter. “You do mirror people a lot. You even adjust your sense of humor.”
“Bingo,” says Elise. “If they’re talkative, I’m talkative. If they’re outgoing, I’m outgoing. If they’re distant, I’m distant. If they’re serious, I’m serious. I mean, it works like a charm,” she admits. “I give people what they want to see and hear. But there is one downside.”
“You get stuck when you have nothing to work with,” Jen completes the train of thought.
“Exactly.”
Sighing, Elise brushes a stray strand of hair out of her face. “I can’t mirror an invisible person,” she says with a groan. “Like, what version of me do they want to see? Am I too polite? Too familiar? Should I say more? Is my message too long? Will they think I’m funny or will they think I’m trying way too hard to be liked?” She buries her face in her hands. “How am I supposed to know all that when I’ve got nothing?”
Jen puts down her ballpoint pen and fully turns to face her, giving her a very, very, very long look.
“Is it just me,” she says, “or are you overthinking this a little?”
Elise sighs. “Probably. I should just switch off my brain and trust that I come across okay, or something.”
Jen lightly punches her arm. “That’s the spirit!”
“I know, I know.” Elise cracks a smile. “I’m trying.”
There’s a short pause.
“So,” Jen asks at length, “want to see if they replied yet?”
Elise pushes her phone as far away from her as she can manage.
“Absolutely not.”
Short study with the same characters you already briefly met the other day. Also most definitely not a way to talk about something I realized about myself today, oh no sir, what are you even talking about?

Character study I wrote for the deuteragonist of an upcoming thing you shall hear about very soon. But I don’t think you need much context to understand this tidbit, so I’m sharing it anyway.
Stay tuned for context soon!
