Hi, my name is Iris, and this is my mythology blog!
Important things about me:
-First. I am a minor. I am not disclosing my age here (and please don't ask me to), but I will say that I am a teenager (so let out your collective sighs of relief that I am not the 11 year olds you see on here now). I add this because this will contribute to several of my rules on this blog, but because I am also mutuals with 18+ people and I want to give them a choice if they want to follow me after learning I am under 18 or not. I'm sorry for not mentioning this before, mutuals who are reading, but I am in fact a minor.

Anyway, a little about this blog: Primarily Aztec mythology. If you want a blog that posts a lot about Aztec mythology, feel free to explore mine! I have a three-year long obsession with Aztec mythology and I honestly love it and to talk about it, it's so cool.
I do also do Greek mythology, JTTW, and a little bit of Norse and Egyptian!
My primary posting type is head canons or incorrect quotes.

I know how much pre-orders help authors, are there any ways to show interest towards a book that the publisher will see besides pre-ordering? I’ll likely need to wait until my birthday or Christmas and receive Remarkable Retirement as a gift, but I wanna make sure my interest is counted, if possible.
thank you so much for this question! yes, there are several things you can do to help authors, aside from preorders.
spread the word
the number one thing you can do to help new authors in particular is to spread the word about their books! while publishing increasingly tries to push authors to market their books/be on tiktok/whatever, in general, there's very little an author can do themself to move the needle on book sales.
particularly because I'm being published by a very small, fairly new press, visibility is one of my greatest worries and biggest issues!
(thank you, tumblr, for all the added visibility, like literally I cannot tell you how much y'all absolutely running with my sister's post about the book was a game-changer for me. I've been able to take a breather, my goodreads adds and preorder sales are going up anyway, like it's literally so amazing to watch and I am so beyond grateful)
so the more that readers who are excited for the book spread the word to other readers, the more likely it is that people will discover the book. if you follow any book bloggers/booktokers or other book reviewers, suggesting the book for their next read/their next list/whatever helps as well, but honestly just telling any random person you think might be interested about the book is such a great help.
if you do your own lists of anticipated books, including the book on any lists is also helpful!
request the book at your local library
if you have a local library, ask that they order the book! again this is good for visibility, plus...I'm not clear on how it works, but even though a library may only buy a single copy of a book, it's really good for the author and sales somehow?? so unclear about how it works (if any librarians or more experienced pub folks are around, feel free to hop in and let us know), but I'm perennially a fan of libraries, so regardless I encourage people to ask their library to order the book!
the only potential snafu here is that the print edition is currently only available direct from Hansen House (although they do distribute through Ingram, so it should be more widely available later). BUT Hansen House is set up to invoice libraries and bookstores, so it should really be fine - and if your local library (if you have one) has any concerns, they can reach out to Hansen House with any questions (and they will not be the first!)
review the book ahead of time
okay. so this one probably sounds weird, because how do you review a book you haven't read?
but first of all, for marginalized authors, bigots are 100% doing that. some of my fellow debut authors have had the absolute worst transphobic or racist reviews, PILES OF THEM, on books that were not out yet, not even available as ARCs, nothing, because there are always folks ready to jump on books by marginalized authors and 1-star them just because the characters are queer or Black or autistic or whatever. it's very terrible.
to be clear, I've been very lucky so far! I think because my book is a little more...under-the-radar queer (the book I just signed with an agent is much more like. A Queer BookTM), and also because I'm lowkey flying under the radar in general due to being with a smaller press, the bigots haven't found me lol. but for some of my friends, they need as many 5-stars as they can get JUST to offset the 1-star reviews from people who hate that they're daring to tell stories about people like them.
you do not have to star the book! I do not personally star books I haven't read because I'm like "well it sure would be awkward if I 5-starred it and then actually read it and...hated it, oops" (and as an author, I only rate my 5-star reads anymore). and actually, for reasons I do not understand, many goodreads users use the rating system as a...shelving system???
(if this is you: america explain!!! there is a built-in want-to-read shelf right there??? you can literally create as many personalized shelves as you want??? is this not super confusing when you then actually go to rate a book you've actually read??? I do not understand.)
BUT. if you're excited about a book that's not out yet, it's totally fine to write a "review" explaining why you're excited, or just saying that you are! that lets other readers using goodreads or storygraph know that this book is something to look forward to, plus it's something nice for the author.
(if you do HAVE to rate the book to leave such a review...I guess just rate it whatever you want, or don't do this at all if you're uncomfortable with it. but I think you can leave a "review" without a rating?)

Blog Purpose
From the beginning of time fandom has always centered white people, giving them a place for escapism (which usually means a world where black people don’t exist -or at least they don’t call them that, seeing as Orcs are a thing).
So while this is a safe place regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender and class, my blogs purpose is to give black people, specifically African Americans representation cuz we are a nuanced people rather than being Orcs in fantasy or thugs on the news (as if y’all don’t like mafia men but…)

Quick stuff about my OCs so people aren't completely confused if they come across my drawings, if ye are interested:
TV head OC: Main character, still hasn’t been named after a year, drawn the most. Age 20. TV is his actual head. Runs a strange store with even stranger products, has a loud voice and has the personality of a used car salesman/TV show host/announcer. Also has reality bending abilities. Head changes color based on emotion; Boooo, cliche I know, but whatever. Overall just a really bizarre guy.
Olivia Kelly: Girl with red hair. TV OC’s roommate and romantic partner if I decide to go through with it lol. Age 21. Runs a bakery that shares a building with TV OC’s store. Always tired, works retail along with running the bakery, has zero patience. Really strong and sporty (she’s supposed to have muscles but I can’t draw those yet lol) also has a pet dragon named Tangerine.
I’d like to make a cartoon (or more realistically a webcomic) about them one day.
Only those two for now, will probably add more later, I have a lot of OCs lol

so im thinking of having jane actually get involved with the plot of the giggle instead of being shunted away, so here are some moments im including
-after the doctor's "humans are no darn good" speech, jane asks him if he truly feels that way or if he's just angry and under pressure because of everything that's happened. the doctor responds with "you shouldve left when you had the chance, jane" referencing how jane was planning on leaving following the timeless child reveal (and the reveal that the doctor knew the whole time) but chose not to which leads to jane referencing the "do you think i care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?" line from dark water
-okay this is just a concept that probably leads into the next one but jane finds a wind up doll version of herself in the toymaker's realm that performs a version of dont tell mama from cabaret - which is a double whammy reference as the toymaker's actor and jane's fifth fc have both been in cabaret
-jane's game with the toymaker is actually a game with her 'not-self' from wild blue yonder, who, as it turns out, is one of the toymaker's pawns. idk how to summarize the game but its a game like tricky cups in which her copy shows her 6 tarot cards with one of them face down (based on the incarnations of the doctor jane has travelled with) and places the rest face down, asking her to focus on one card. slight problem is that jane winds up outsmarting her copy, because her copy seems to have forgotten that the card she picked was ten's card, and considering that both ten and fourteen have the same face, jane just focused on fourteen's card and process of elimination-d her way out of it
-and yes the 6th card - which is permanently face down - is based on fifteen, but jane doesn't know that :')
-during the "well thats alright then!" puppet show, the toymaker references the timeless child, the division and the fact the doctor knew the whole time while keeping jane in the dark. jane tries to rebut that the doctor didnt know about his past incarnation's connections to the divsion, but before she can finish, he cuts her off with "well thats alright then!"
-rose joins the doctor, donna and jane in UNIT, but because she has a zeedex on her - due to her main way around the giggle being the metacrisis and her not having travelled in the TARDIS - she stays behind while they all go to the past to confront the toymaker. the toymaker ends up using rose at one point, possibly in the hypothetical 'dont tell mama' sequence as a backup dancer? idk tho lol
-the spice up your life sequence has both jane and rose get manhandled by the toymaker as well, with him purposefully bumping them together to make it appear like they're kissing - diversity win, the trickster god from another dimension who is racist sexist and vaguely transphobic supports lesbians!
-its rose and martha who pull jane into five and six after she's hit by the galvanic beam. when rose hears jane v screaming after vi appears she immediately goes on the defensive :')
-back to the toymaker being gross he keeps referring to jane as 'herr jane' and 'the timeless child' - herr is the german equivalent to mr, meaning that the toymaker now adds being openly transphobic onto his list of grossness!
-also during the "well thats alright then!" puppet show, jane asks about ryan and dan, two companions who did not die and both left on their own accord. however, the toymaker specifically brings up jane's feelings for ryan, how she never acted on them until it was too late, and how she pushed him away before he left the TARDIS. much like when the toymaker brings up the flux, jane is understandibly a bit pissed that he made sure to emphasise that

yes, you read my description right,
I am doing free art commissions!!
now, what does this mean?
it means exactly what it sounds like: you send in asks of your requests for art of characters, animals, objects - anything, really - I DM you in case you have any references or specifications, I'll try my best to draw them and post the results to this blog!
at first I'll stick to colorless sketches, though I can try lineart and coloring if you want.
I'll add a list of media/subject matter I'm moderately familiar with at the end, though you can ask for anything, (I will obviously rely more heavily on references and notes you give me if I don't know it). there you will find my do's and don't as well.
since I am busy with university and am about to start working at a new job there is no guarantee I'll get to your request in a timely manner so please be patient.
so, why am I doing this?
I really enjoy drawing however I've never really managed to practice it much, especially since ideas are very few and far between for me.
In other words: I am not good at drawing, especially not people. you know those bad anime drawings people like to meme? yeah, expect something around that level but less funny and not anime (though I could try it).
but hey, I am here to learn!
I don't feel comfortable charging money for my art yet though I might start taking paid commissions eventually.
