what was your inspiration behind making a micronation OC instead of playing an existing character? why a micronation, specifically? do you think her character would still "work" if she wasn't one, or how would it make her different?
I really like this one, I’ve been wanting to go even further into my motivations for writing Hilda for a while!
Under a cut. it’s long
>what was your inspiration behind making a micronation OC instead of playing an existing character?
>>instead of playing an existing character?
I do play a canon character, over on @augabragd :D He’s a canon divergent I.celand, and I feel like the canon divergent part kind of says a lot because sometimes, he almost feels OC.
I enjoy playing characters I can relate to on some level; a character I could either see myself in or having positive relations with in the real world (again, hence why Eirikur is canon divergent- I think I project myself onto him to a degree). It’s what helps me write a character well in my honest opinion. That being said, I generally don’t find very many Hetalia characters to be relatable. I’ve tried writing a multitude of characters, including 2ps, and I couldn’t seem to click with any of them. That doesn’t mean I don’t like them (only the 1ps)!
I understand that canon divergence is a way to help people feel more connected with their characters, but it can most definitely be a process of trial and error, and for myself it just so happens that most of the time, it really was just error.
I also love OCs because they can bring a variety of dynamics. I love seeing the creativity that people put into their OCs! However, I chose to not make an OC based on an existing country because I feel as though history can somewhat limit that creativity (seriously, history was always beyond my biggest struggle in school?? I have no reason as to why, nor any clue. I never seem to be able to understand it).
>why a micronation, specifically?
The micronations are criminally underrated. That is genuinely part of the reason as to why I chose to make Alleos a micronation. Believe it or not, in her earlier micronation concepts, I considered making her a D.utch micronation (as I live in the N.etherlands) because it felt fitting. The N.etherlands is surprisingly tech focused (or maybe it seems that way because of my field of study?) with all sorts of tech companies. If I can recall correctly, I once read that the N.etherlands was a global power for cyber security.
In all genuine honesty, I scrapped that idea in favour of the N.ordics. I have always had a soft spot for them; they are my comfort characters for several reasons. I love them so much and I just wanted a character that could be positively affiliated with them.
Back to the main focus: The micronations! It’s a group composed of, let’s be real here: a bunch of really weird kids. I feel like Alleos, both in her earlier (micronation) concepts and now, is just perfect to be a micronation. She’s kind of strange and doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere else (she doesn’t feel integrated with the N.ordics), but I personally feel like the micronations are one of the most welcoming groups for people of all kind. They have M.olossia on their side!
Not to mention, not much longer before I decided to make Hilda Alleos the micronation, I decided to look into L.adonia a little bit. I think it’s neat that a nation can be established online, and founded under the focus of promoting creativity or something along those lines. It was established in 1996; so somewhat recently, which means- something like that is most definitely possible in the present day. That, in my opinion, also means the concept for Hilda’s character, being a cyber-based micronation, really isn’t that unrealistic.
Hilda, in the meantime, was founded on a more technical, IT-focused perspective. Her network is very private with a secure firewall around it and all sorts of antivirus. This is reflected through her, in her physical form, through the social anxiety. I feel as though her being based in a more rural area also symbolises her love for freedom and independence.
The idea of making her a micronation came to me around a year or so back. I had an RP going on with a friend of mine, and basically Hilda, who was more of a fandomless OC at the time, had found herself in the meeting building (through the means of being a dumb bitch). Not to mention in a completely different dimension; one for just the nations to live in, and she wound up getting stuck. SO, to avoid a painful life of what appeared to be forced labour in the AU, she came up with the lie that she was “a micronation somewhere in central/northern Europe called Alleos” (and people actually bought it. She partied with the countries on the beach).
She was honestly never officially a micronation up until an RP I have ongoing, from aphalleos, came up. How she came to be a micronation isn’t canon to how she would have established Alleos today. Though, I feel like that cherished RP really had, and continues to have, a lot of pivotal points for Hilda’s development. Back then, aphalleos had a completely different URL and was a blog solely for the RP with my friend, and yet when I decided that it was official: she’s a micronation, I feel like things fell into place from there.
>do you think her character would still "work" if she wasn't one, or how would it make her different?
To an extent, yes, it would.
Alleos’s earlier concepts were not that of a micronation. In the earlier concepts, Alleos was a ‘real’ nation, if you will. A nation with history, its own culture, military, etc- while also being entirely fictional.
In just the general earlier concepts of Alleos, it would be a heavily divided nation: a nation divided by tradition and progress. Because of how vastly difference the east (traditional) and west (progressive, though not completely futuristic with flying cars and those sorts of things) would be, it would have required two personifications, Hilda being the western side. I like to think that there would be a frozen boundary that divides the two physically. Whether that frozen boundary would only be metaphoric, as in, the people who lived there would be much more modern and living a normal life like us- and possibly requiring a third personification. Or perhaps if it would have been a literal frozen boundary, as there’s a lot of crazy phenomena in the world and hehe big line of ice
Basically, if this were the Alleos we knew, it would also take much more inspiration from the United States in terms of culture.
Hilda would, for the most part be the same. But could you imagine her without the anxiety? Because she wouldn’t have anxiety if she were western Alleos. It would make no sense to have that as part of her character. Aloof and awkward in social situations? Absolutely, as it would still be much more tech oriented.
I’ve never really gotten to the point of thinking of what eastern Alleos would be like in this version of Alleos, but I’ve been thinking of this Alleos a lot as of late!
